Hit the road, jack
Did anyone else see this and expect some crazy unexpected crossroads/JoaT synergy?  :P
No, I thought it would be a game where Jack was a faliure.  :-\
Which is exactly what it was!
Exactly.
What it was!

We need to go deeper!

Dominion General Discussion / Getting discouraged with the game
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:14:28 am »
For the last several days, I've found myself in the oddest mindset: I'm simultaneously thinking about my lack of progress as a player (at least as evidenced by my steadily shrinking rating) at the same time I've had my first few games where I felt like everything came together.

Then I read the thread (in Puzzles) that asks about when you might swindle an opponent's silver rather than their gold when presented that choice.  In it is the following post from DG:
You can draw the silver later in the turn and use it as a different card to advance your horns of plenty.
You can play a harvest and know that the silver will be drawn for +1 coin.
You know that your opponent's deck + discard consists of two silvers and a gold, so removing a silver will improve the tributes you can play later in the turn.
You know that your opponent's deck + discard consists of a silver and two gold, so removing a silver will reduce the tributes your other opponent can play in their turn.
There are no gold cards left in the supply and the gold will be the only card in the opponent's deck+discard, so your swindler can trash the gold with no replacement.
You have foolishly played a golem to draw a noble brigand and masquerade in a situation where the stolen treasure will be drawn by the masquerade and become your worst card in hand, passed to your opponent.
How many games will I have to play before this sort of list of answers comes easily?
I can't decide how to phrase the question so that it generates answers that I will find usable, and/or doesn't sound flippant (thereby prompting flippant responses), so how about: At what skill level are you when you can compile a list like this in under say, 30 minutes of thought?  Or, if you prefer, how many games had you played when you realized you had this level of facility with the game?  Those are still not quite what I'm after because they suggest the answer is numerical.

And to be clear, my question is not directed at (just) DG.  I'd appreciate lots of different perspectives.

Theory - If this needs to be moved, I'll not be offended.  I considered posting it in the Help forum.

I'd believe Navigator was a power 4 if WW said it was :(

I wanted to say "don't tap on the aquarium", but I realized I was uncertain as to the inhabitant of the tank being tapped on.  Well played sir!

Or maybe its just the second bourbon kicking in.

(light bulb moment: [bourbon] + [872 games on Isotropic] = Level 5 :o

:-\ Free Dominion just got more expensive, cause I'm gonna need a LOT more bourbon.

Other Games / Re: How to play Vladimír Chvátil games

.....While I agree that there is a chaotic nature to most of his games, I very much disagree with the idea that there is a lack of elegance...

....-Edit- I should note, that I do have friends and family that find this style of chaotic play rather difficult. They love many other games, but enjoy being able to take their time and think about the why of an action. These games do not lend themselves to that. There is much strategy, but it is all on-the-fly. You need to focus on MANY different things, and make reaction based decisions within seconds of new information arriving. This mode of play can be really tough. I fully respect that there are people who just don't handle that style well. I personally find the rush part of the thrill. It keeps everyone on their toes and thinking. But yes, it can become overwhelming, ESPECIALLY to new players. For the record, Space Alert is no different. You need to think bilaterally (sometimes tri or quad) with 1001 things happening, and new information forcing you to make changes to previous plans within a 5-10 second span. Not for everyone, but I highly encourage everyone to at least try.

Speaking of elegance, +1 for the above paragraph.  It's so densely cogent. In a very short moment, I learned about you, your gaming family, your approach to the world, that Vladimir Chvatil games are likely to intrigue me, that I need to look out for demos of any of these titles, and how to approach those first few games, in order to maximize the fun and the learning.

But you rascal, the part that reads "and new information forcing you to make changes to previous plans within a 5-10 second span" makes me (yet again) yearn for a game version of real-time air traffic control.

Edit:  Corrected typo in final graph.

Help! / Re: Game was over in 11 turns. How do you use Governors?
« on: May 09, 2012, 12:32:24 pm »
My apologies if I offended you, it was not my intent, as I have explained in my PM to you.  And thanks for being gentle in your admonishment.  Your point is well taken, and I think my PM will make that clear, along with what specifically prompted my post.

You've helped me remember that, despite my advanced age, I am a very inexperienced forum user and poster (f.DS is the only forum in which I've posted more than once or twice).  I suspect that the general tone of niceness, the humor, and the large volume of helpful information on this site have lulled me into a sense of camaraderie, and I've naively extrapolated that to familiarity.  Upon further reflection, I recognize that such familiarity is likely both inaccurate and unearned on my part, given my limited contribution to this community heretofore.

And, +1 for the "good sir" (which I will apply after I hit "send" on this reply).  ;)

...one of my favorite (least favorite) misreads of the kingdom which I do a ton is not realizing it is a colony game until turn 6 or 7. This is usually not as bad as most of the others on this list, but I do it so often (like every other colony game it seems) that I have to hate it the most.
This happens to me almost every colony game.  I can't figure out what goes on that I can miss two additional cards in a stack of what is normally 7 or 8.  Anybody have any idea how this happens?

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: Guilds
« on: May 02, 2012, 01:13:55 pm »
Jumping way over the gun...

I had a (very detailed) dream last night where I was playing Dominion - with the Guilds expansion that doesn't come out until next year. If my dream is true then I have a scoop for everyone.

Here is how the Guild expansion will work:

There is a new card called "guild" (cost $5, action). When you play Guild you get a new junior apprentice. There are a number of different types of apprentice, and a random set are chosen for each game where guild is in play.

Apprentice cards are very weak (ie +1 card +1 action, or +2$, or +1$ +1 buy, ect) - basically what you would think of as a $1 or $1.5 card.

Every time you play a junior apprentice it goes back to the suppy and you choose a senior apprentice to replace him (of the same type - ie +1 card +1 action turns into +1 card +2 actions, or +2$ turns into +$2 +1 buy, etc) and he new card goes in you discard.

When you play the junior apprentice it goes back to the supply and you gain in your discard a journeyman apprentice who is more powerful still.

Then a master apprentice then a full journeyman then a full master.

Since the cards go back to the supply and are only played once each you don't need very many of each type.

It adds a ton of variety to a game and allows for both very powerful cards ( the only way to get a master is to buy a guild, play the guild, play the ja, sa, ja, ma, and fj - 7 times through your deck!), and completely new strategies.

Sorry Donald for giving away the surprise. I learned from Cassandra you shouldn't keep future dreams secret.

Feel free to discuss.  ;)

(true story about the dream - detail was incredible. Only things that were unclear were if guild was a treasure or action, and how many steps to get to master...)

I can't wait till next year when this comes out to see what Donald's (retroactive) comment will be.  I doubt he will comment substantively now.  I'd be thrilled to be wrong though.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Purchase all cards ASAP
« on: May 02, 2012, 01:10:15 pm »
I did this in the past, here it is again:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/13/game-20111213-014547-4d8690ef.html

This board averages emptying the entire board (while gaining about 1000 VP) in 12 turns (I've done it in 10).

So I had been playing around with a variant of that; adding in Vineyards to give more points. I also found a way to get around trashing... Scheme. It doesn't empty the board as quickly, but it does get more points. Once you get your engine going, you can use Scheme to start every turn with KC, KC, KC, KC, Council Room; with many other KC, Grand Market, and Council Room on top of your deck. This allows you to draw your entire deck every turn even after you have a huge deck to deal with.

From Geronimoo's kingdom as a baseline, what did you replace with Scheme, and what did you replace with Vineyards (I assume Gardens)?

Even in just a two player game:

Turn 1:
Player 1: Coppersmith
Player 2: Saboteur
Turn 2:
Player 1: Silver
Player 2: Nothing
Turn 3:
Player 1: {hand} Coppersmith, Copper x4: Buy Province
Player 2: Play Saboteur, hitting Province

However, from position 1, I don't believe you can hit your opponents Province until turn 4 in a two player game.
This doesn't work. The Sabotuer would hit the Silver. You could just not buy the Silver...
Turn 1:
P1: Baron/Coppersmith
P2: Sabotuer
Turn 2:
P1: Zilch
P2: Nada
Turn 3:
P1: Play Baron/Coppersmith Buy P
P2: Sabotuer P

For P1 at turn 3, I get that a hand of Coppersmith, C,C,C,C = $8 for the Province.  But Baron, Estate, C,C,C would only yield $7. Further, a hand of Baron, Coppersmith, C,C, Estate would only allow the play of one action card.

Also, the Province (just) bought by P1 on Turn 3 would still be in the discard when P2 took turn 3.   Am I missing something?

So do you think your rating in 3p/4p is properly reflective of your abilities in 3p/4p? (I've risked taking your "I dont know what the heck I'm doing" as sincere relative to 3p/4p.  We all know your skill in 2p.)

Well, they're very different games, and I also wanted to feel out how I thought the ranking system matched up - whether it was easier/harder to get high in 3/4 than in 2p

Care to elaborate on your observations/conclusions?

MurpLekkit is my mother and purplekkit is my father. A few years back they moved away from Stockholm (capital of Sweden) but I stayed. A year or so back I went to visit them and got a present from them when I did. This was Dominion Base. Since we brought all the sets that was out at the time they got to keep base and it didn't take long before they also got all the expansions. They were introduced to isotropic and now they play.

My mother actually mentioned playing against you, but not knowing what StarCraft is she got your name really wrong ("Starbucks in Heaven or something like that..."), but when the CR-logs came in she told me it was you. :) Anyways, she said you were nice.

Yeah, I enjoyed chatting with her, and I think it's very cool that your parents play. I introduced my dad (who's 76) and his wife to Dominion right after my GF and I found it, and they now have a pool of about 4 couples that get together and play.

dougz rises to the top of the leaderboard with his patented Platinum/Platinum opening.

(Link may actually have nothing to do with doug, but it is the most bizarre Isotropic log I've ever seen.)

With so many oddities in that log to choose from, I thought the most bizarre was that despite the "purchasing power", the game lasted 36 turns and ended on Provinces.

Edited: To add punctuation.

Hi. I've been around this forum for some months now...

Welcome.  I played against Murplekkit the other day, who claimed to be related to you (can't remember how), and have seen a purplekkit as well.  Do you have the whole family playing online?

Man*, I miss Seattle.

Other Games / Board gamers in Tampa Florida area?

If this needs to be moved, feel free.

To take care of a family member with health problems, my girlfriend and I will be moving to the Tampa area in the next few weeks, and boardgaming will potentially represent a much needed diversion.  Is anyone aware of any already established gaming groups in the area, or will we need to start one?

Council Room Feedback / Re: Vanity Accomplishments

Would I be correct in assuming that if someone achieved a "higher-level" accomplishment, they will get credit for the similar ones at lower levels?  For example, if you were to score 103 points, thereby achieving the Imperial badge, would you also get credit for Monarch, Royal Heir, Regent, and Peer?  I can't access the site right now to check my own list.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Funny Things on Isotropic

There is one name I really love - "Sadly, she". Things like "Sadly, she plays a Witch" or "Sadly, she reveals a Province" (to your tournament) and of course "Sadly, she wins!" are hilarious.

I just met a guy named "It is you who accidentaly" (and there is also a guy without the last word). Also funny, but "Sadly, she" is better  ;D

There are a couple of other versions of this approach that make me wonder if it is all the same person and is easily bored.  I've played against (I'm paraphrashing here, having not check my game logs) "X grins mischieviously and", as well as "X giggles uncontrollably and".  It was pretty amusing.

I let my 9 year old daughter, my primary Dominion play partner, pick out which expansion we were going to buy first. I gave her the card lists for Intrigue and Prosperity; she chose the latter.

I don't have kids, yet this still made my day, and not just because it stands in bright relief against barsooma's ridiculous rant against Donald X in the "Official Android App' thread.  You must be a great parent, and I'll bet she is (and will continue to be) a capable, confident, inclusionary sort of human being.  (Plus, she probably can already beat me handily.)

Edit: corrected typo in first line of my text.
