Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Hamlet/Menagerie
« on: December 10, 2011, 04:37:47 pm »
Menagerie is my favorite card, and probably one of the most powerful. Hamlet + menagerie is an excellent combo. No, it isn't weak.
Hamlet doesn't require you to discard a card, because menagerie is a cantrip. You will just discard if you have copies of a same card, and this case is so rare !
And even if you have to discard, it isn't a problem.

Hamlet + Library is also a good combo.

Dominion General Discussion / Fairgrounds + Silk Road : Viable strategy ?
« on: December 09, 2011, 05:01:16 pm »
Here is a game I've lost.
I thought Fairgrounds + Silk Road would be a weak strategy because fairgrounds requires you to buy differents cards, and Silk Road requires you to rush on the others silk roads, and green cards. And unlike gardens or dukes, with fairgrounds you aren't going to "go green"...

And Here is another game I've lost, trying the Fairgrounds + silk roads strategy. I was too slow...

So, What do you think ?

Why does everyone hate the secret chamber ? Its a reaction card definitely better than moat.

My ranking :

1. Chapel
2. Hamlet : excellent village, nice combo engine (library, menagerie...)
3. Crossroads : excellent card with baron, island, and others.
4. Lighthouse : best protection.
5. Haven
6. Fool's gold
7. Embargo
8. Courtyard : nice, but terminal. I prefer the haven.
9. Pawn : often bought.
10. Native village : good, but destroyed by hamlet.
11. Cellar : usually good.
12. Secret Chamber : good reaction against sea hag / pirate ship / margrave / ... and nice non-reaction.
13. Herbalist : sometimes good, but often ignored.
14. Pearl Diver : like pawn, often bought, and not so bad.
15. Duchess
16. Moat

I don't agree with Kahryl. Village is sometimes better than a fishing village.
In a conspirator chain, for example. FV give not card. Village yes.

But, in a village/+card engine, like councilroom, you should buy FV.

Otherwise, your strategy was right. I don't understand why you lost...

Oasis - Menagerie is pretty good, like Menagerie - Hamlet.
Menagerie is the strongest 3$ card in the game, IMO.

Hunting Party - Saboteur seems also great.

Crossroad is excellent with Harem, but in a colony game, I'm not sure.
Minion isn't bad with Shanty Town.
So my strategy would be : 4/5 Minions (maybe with a quarry), 3/4 Shanty Towns, 1 Jester, Forge (Gold + Minion = Colony) and Big Money.

Ghost Ship's already in the list at the bottom of the article.

Oh yes, sorry. And you're right about fortune teller.

Another great counter to fortune teller and others : Farming Village...

...and you can add Ghost Ship.

I don't agree about Fortune Teller, it's an attack like rabble, maybe even better if played one time. And for the low cost of 3$, it's a reasonable card.

Coppersmith + ill-Gotten Gains is a really strong combo. I never tried with counting House.
