Dominion General Discussion / Re: Least thematic card?
« on: July 02, 2017, 11:57:04 pm »
What a coincidence, was just commenting to someone how Sauna/Avanto didn't seem to fit in w/ anything else in Dominion. Reading the secret history just now on the wiki makes it make a bit more sense. Still, there's snow on the ground. Ofc it snowed in medieval/roman/etc. times, just don't think about that and other cards aren't snowy(unless I'm forgetting something...)
Intrigue:
Mining Village
Scout
Dark Ages:
Ironmonger
Mercenary
Adventures:
Hireling
Messenger
Scouting Party
Empires:
Small Castle
Mountain Pass
Wall
Wolf Den
Promo:
Sauna\Avanto

lol, thot I fergot even though I see them all the time. I guess I don't really think about it w/ others, Sauna/Avanto is the one that showcases a snowy environment the best. Messenger and Ironmonger were horribly obvious, played with them plenty lol. Mercenary, Small Castle, and Mining Village you kinda gotta look close. Hireling is obviously snowy, but a cursory inspection just shows fire, plus it's a duration. The events and landmarks too, but I was thinking about "cards"(they are cards, but events don't buy count as cards fer Goons and stuff, landmarks are different.)

Haven't seen Scout in forever, except on here a bit when people say it's a sucky card, like in the $4 cost rankings.

Since you mentioned it, I got to thinking that Messenger could be seen as a bit odd. I mean if you have a Messenger racing back to you, it's probably with news of trouble right? I guess he might have a gift for you too, but then why race back to the enemy and give the same(at least normally, ofc different w/ last cards in piles, last in a split, castles, Knights, etc.) Not to say I don't like Messenger, though I do find it a bit hard to use. Kinda fun to try though.

What does everyone think the Least thematic card is?

I'd have to say Avanto.  Swimming in ice cold water does not net you 3 cards.

I'd put Minion at second.

Interesting board.

Wharf is important here mostly for the +buy - you can probably get cheaper draw from Lost Arts + Oracle (you get less value from Lost Artsing Wharfes because as durations, they are already semi-nonterminal). Keep is interesting here because the engine is so obviously powerful, but you have to incorporate some Treasures. Artificer does have a ton of support.

Definitely don't go for Settlers. They have discarding synergy, but the rest is just so much better. You probably want one JoaT - opening Joat/Shanty beats your opening I think. Buy Lost Arts on your first $6 and then pound the Oracles. Throw in some Artificers plus 2-4 Wharves. Diplomat can be good, but you don't want too many. Good thing you don't need a lot of terminal action space. 2 Shanties and 2 Diplomats should suffice - don't count on Bustling Villages being revealed, you don't need the Settlers. A Militia should probably be in.

You should only view Potions as a source of VP here. Transmute is not worth it (like always), Philosopher's Stone is bad because you'll draw your deck (but it's still worth VP).

Good idea, I wasn't too sure about opening Silver either. Would you say not I shouldn't have even gained Settlers w/ Artificer? Oracle is just 1 more card that has to be discarded, but what about before I'd have been able to put a Lost Arts on it? That's kinda surprising to me about Militia, why? It does mess w/ Artificer some, but in theory you can draw your deck quite easily here, and JoaT and Diplomat can benefit from the attack.

I've made a lot of these, but this is a good one. I figured Artificer is really good with Settlers, Diplomat, JoaT, Keep, and Shanty Town. they all benefit. But non-terminal Wharves are pretty amazing, was that better or did I just mess up? It was really close. I think I should've got more Wharves, and I'm not sure what else. That's the point to ask:)

Was 3 Settlers bad w/ 6? I coulda got a Wharf, but I really like Settlers w/ discarding. Did I get enough/too many JoaT? Wanted to win Silver Keep, and more importantly Artificer lets me discard a lot to draw a lot. Diplomat doesn't actually draw more w/ fewer cards, just gives +2 actions. Which I wanted for Shanty Town in particular(so it draws,) but w/ Bustling Village and possible Lost Arts(and Shanty Town itself ofc,) was there any need for a Diplomat? Part of the reason was also cuz he bought a Militia(that was bad right?)

Main other question would be on potions. Did I get one too early, and was 2 excessive? PS wasn't much help, tho I feel like it could be w/ Artificers. Maybe winning that Keep wasn't too important? idk about Transmute, figured I'd have plenty of actions to trash for Duchies.

Well, I was already planing to say I think Dame Natalie is underrated. I guess the silly thing there is that I'd only really want her to move 1 place anyways. 2 cards, a Necropolis, discarder, cantrip, trashing...those are all things that might be worse than "gain a card costing up to three," but I think it's more common for that gaining to be better than a terminal Silver.

I've had some good games w/ Natalie, one was really fun w/ Training and Merchant. But it's pretty common for a card that you basically always want in bulk to appear that Natalie can gain. Merchant, Harbinger, cheap Villages, Wishing Well, Pearl Diver, Vagrant, Patrician, etc. And it's a Knights board obviously, so more Lighthouses, and possibly Moats, is better. Speaking of Knights, she gains cheaper cards that can be trashed, reducing your odds of having good cards trashed. This is especially useful if you lose the knights split(not that all or any of them always get bought, but still.) And if you assume that there're enough actions, there are even more cheap cards you'd want a lot of. Like Vassal, and terminal draw(maybe, at least something like Courtyard.) It's pretty cheap gaining, but cost reducers can make it very strong. And even if she's not close to the top of the pile, if there are cost reducers knights are extra likely to be bought.

Feodum makes gaining a Silver better, and Estates can be worth gaining too. For instance, emptying the Estates so opponents can't cash in on Wild Hunt, or if you have Groundskeeper(s) in play. Triumph, Inheritance, maybe even Baron or Island(as reasons to gain Estates w/ Natalie.) I guess a few other things, the cheap gaining can help some w/ Fountain, or w/ Aqueduct moving a vp token from Silvers to better a victory buy. Avoid Embargoes, possibly even Tax. Keep. Some synergy w/ Throne Room variants if there are cheap cantrips. Lots of small stuff, but compare that to a terminal Silver. That just doesn't seem very impressive. I'd(tentatively) agree Sylvia>Vander, but that's about it. 2 coin isn't that much, and it might very well be more than enough(yay! 10 and 1 buy...) or not enough anyways(7...well I was just gonna get a Lab anyways. Didn't really need Sylvia after all!) If you are consistently drawing your deck, then gaining Silvers would be better.

Anyways, that's all I had for knights. A lot of people seem to question the rankings for landmarks, me too. Tomb and Wolf Den definitely seem more important than Bandit Fort or Fountain most of the time. Palace can be a lot of setup for not that much. I mean often you'll want the Golds, and maybe the Silvers, anyways, but generally all the ones that start w/ 6 per player like Battlefield and Labyrinth seem more important. Speaking of Labyrinth, how is that last? It can be really nice since you generally want to gain more than 1 card a turn anyways, and the person who starts doing that first can gain an advantage. Baths should be last imo. It's rarely important, and really is just small help for dud turns. Tower seems oddly high. Emptying a pile is easy enough(depends what pile:) ) but you need a lot more than your opponent to get a significant vp swing, and that's just not practical much of the time. Only other thing is I agree w/ people who say Mountain Pass isn't that good.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: The swingiest card ever
« on: June 27, 2017, 02:05:14 pm »
Kinda wanna say Possession. Buying it, but also what kind of turn(s) are you getting?

But even though that's swingy, idk about what would be the most swingy. Most throne room variants will be a bit swingy, except Royal Carriage mostly. Pretty much any attack can be swingy, depending on the board for some. For instance, even plain cursers like Witch can be swingy if Hermit is on the board. Any Village can be swingy, drawing too many when you don't need them or not enough when you do. Most reactions, especially Fool's Gold:)

In my experience I can definitely remember swinginess with Sentry. Had quite a bit with Talisman, drawing it and getting so much money I didn't want 2 4s or less, so it ended up being a copper. Treasure Maps ofc. Any number of reactions, one time my Moat always missed Sea Hags, and all my Hags drowned. Knights for sure. I've hit Warriors w/ my own twice, made a giant difference, but that barely happens. Island is a big one, the TR variants I've had, Swindler, Beggar(often it's the reaction u want and it's a dead card otherwise,) etc. Couldn't pick a swingiest, that seems subjective.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Novice player, looking to improve
« on: June 23, 2017, 11:10:57 am »
Hi. My name is Jacob. I'm looking to improve my Dominion gameplay, through practicing with those better than me. My only experience is playing with my roommates and local friends, but whom only play on occasion. I became very familiar with the First edition this way, but I have purchased Second Edition of both the Base set and Intrigue. I would like to learn about how the new cards affect the game overall, which are important additions, and which should be avoided. (If there is a thread somewhere regarding this, I would appreciate a link to it. I'm new to this forum, and haven't dug into every nook and cranny.)

I am also looking for people to play regularly online with, to improve my game. Perhaps getting helpful tips during play, chastising me for making a stupid purchase, things of that nature (as well as practicing regular gameplay). Any help would be much appreciated.

(If there is a more appropriate place for this post, please let me know.)

Thanks a bunch!

-Thriving Turtle

You could add me, I like to criticize people, and if you're looking for constructive criticism that works. I'm not great, but I'm ok. I try to play on Shuffle IT most days. I have plenty of free time for that, it's just my internet or something makes it really hard to connect so it's a little slow. I'd like to help, but expect to get nagged like every turn:)

Game Reports / Re: Monument-BM?

Lost Arts on Monument is totally a viable strategy in a vacuum, but here you can do better. Lost Art should go to your Rangers, since they are the only draw. Prizes are very powerful as usual, especially followers. Bag of Gold is better than usual because of Butcher.
So the general plan woulb be to open Tournament Silver, buy one more silver if you hit three, rest of the threes should be Sages. Get a Butcher as soon as you can, wrapped in Border Village preferably, pile out the Rangers, put a token on them when you have a couple of them. Buy a Province when you can. Second Butcher should be good. Prizes should be Followers -> Steed -> Bag Of Gold. Use Butchers to get Provinces. Never buy money in this game after that second Silver.

Edit:
hmm, altar is here, get an altar then!!! screw bag of gold, get a princess instead and watch for pileouts
[/quote

Oh, 2 Silvers before Sages. I got Sage after just one, that's good advice. I was leaning towards opening Tournament, don't much care for Monument tbh, but I'd lost once or twice to this person so I was easily influenced to copy.

I think 8 should definitely be a Province early w/ Tournament, but what about 6 or 7 if you have enough coin tokens to make 8? Leaning towards Province on 7 too then, really unsure for 6. BV+something and saving tokens seems better than paying more than 1 token on something that might not even line up w/ Tournament, and end up a dead card when u should've builded more.

Well calling his plays "noob" isn't really helping anyone. He had a solid plan. Lost arts on monument, get lots of them, thrash a bit with butcher and altar.

You seem to be jazzing it up. The early province spike with tournament did put you in a good position. But if you are planning to make an engine you should work towards drawing your deck. I'm also not sure what to do, because it is hard to get rid of your coppers here. But to draw your deck I think rangers + lost arts. I think you certainly over invested in sages.

" I figured this was a noob thing"

dint say it was, it worked out. That's a good point, didn't think about too many Sages. Should some of those have been Silvers instead?

Now here's a weird one. Never seen Monument-BM, I figured this was a noob thing. Certainly Tournament is really strong, and getting all those Prizes you'd think I'd win. I have some idea what I did wrong certainly, spread myself too thin trying to go for Dukes, Tournament ofc, and be open to Gardens later w/ Bag of Gold and stuff. Still, is Monument-BM a thing or am I just that bad? I mean even w/ Lost Arts it doesn't draw or have +buy...speaking of which I shooda got more Rangers and +action on them.

Certainly I go a little crazy on Border Villages, 2 of them was worse than a Province. If I'd been more aggressive getting land instead of building too late would I have won, or is Monument w/ Lost Arts too strong? Always thought of Monument as pretty slow. Would love some help figuring out this board. Also, was Venture a bad idea? Not sure why I got it. And was that Altar too early/late? Should it have been another BV?

I remember a sad game where I lost to Baker-BM. Gov was on there, I remember Chariot Race, Dungeon, and Knights, I got Dame Natalie and also trashed some Bakers.

It felt kinda bad to lose cuz isn't spamming Baker a noob move? Like always opening w/ it, and even paying 2 tokens fer it over Silver? But I somehow still lost, doing all that fancy stuff:( mayb shooda put ot in Game Reports, I'm not a huge fan of Baker.

This seems understandable. Knights are poor against money decks (compare Natalie to a bandit) and just how are you using your governors here? If there are better cards at cost 3 than cost 4, trashing with the governor might be bad. If you are giving the opponent extra cards then their bakers and dungeons get better. Giving out gold and silver isn't a great advantage unless that gold can be reliably harnessed for better things. Neither chariots nor governors are reliable in decks full of copper.

It feels to me as if there might be a way to bring everything together if we knew all thre kingdom cards.

Oh, I just often have trouble w/ Baker. I don't remember any specifics, just that I felt scandalized losing to almost pure Baker. Don't think he even bought a Dungeon. Lucky, certainly.

I don't know what you did, but Governor-BM should beat Baker-BM handily.

Certainly that's what I'd expect too. I think I got careless thinking that this was just another Baker addict. Generally would it be best to buy no Bakers at all on a Gov board if there're Govs left and Bakers aren't the Obelisk or something?

You can't have too many of them and the earlier the better, but idk comparing it to other 5s, at least some of them. Pretty sure Cursers are gonna be a priority over it most of the time. I'm sure Cultist too, but mayb not Gov? What about Minion or Knights if they already are piledriving the Bakers?

Another comparison of two cards that would be helpful is Governor and Minion. Certainly these are both very good cards that you want in bulk if possible, but what if they're both there? Only had 1 game w/ both a while ago, went Gov and that seemed to be fine. But since Minion is also amazing I got 1 or 2 of those as well. Should I have just bought Governors? Don't remember the board at all, but generally speaking does anyone have an opinion on which is better? Gov speaks to me, gain Golds and then Remodel them for Provinces. Ofc gonna be weaker on boards with Colonies, but I still don't think it's weak there. The option for a non-terminal Council Room that's just 3 cards w/ no buy is really helpful too, tho i use that the least.

Minion is really good though. I'd be skeptical of anyone saying Minion>Gov most of the time, but certainly I'd buy it if someone said a mix is better than just one.

I noticed that the 5 cost cards list has been completed in the Qvist ranking matrices. Way to go, Qvist! I know you're a bit burnt out by all this, but I really do hope you will eventually complete the lists for 6+, potions and knights.

I'm prepared to argue Knights:) Obviously i agree Dame Josephine, but really skeptical about Sir Vander especially. They're Knights...so eiither they're gonna get trashed, or you're winning(pretty much.) Getting that Gold is nice, earlier the better since Vander for their Knght is always a good trade really.

Not impressed w/ Sylvia, Natalie is awesome on lots of boards.

In my time, Big Money boards happened one quarter of the time, and then you had to make do with what little you could find. Today's youth is just spoiled if you ask me. Now please, get off my lawn.  >:(
 :)

fair enuff, but what time was that lol? i rarely play just base games, but those always turn into engine games. Or most of the time, but I guess 2nd edition cards help that.

I'm shocked it creates boards this unplayable.

You've said thing like this before. I remember a comment of you saying: the online game would never give you this much thrashing.

But I think it is all just equal probability on all cards. No conditionals. To me it's the other way around: it is surprising (shocking) that the game is designed such that so many of these random boards actually are interesting! (I would either expect a lot of non-functioning boards or little variety in how they play out.)

So yeah, you get boards like this one. I guess you go torturer money.

Interesting, the reason I'm shocked is cause I almost always see many cards that go together. I've rarely had lots of villages w/o draw(many times that's just been Moat, but more than half the time there'll be an attack(s) w/ Moat.)

W/ Feodum, there's almost always at least decent Silver gaining, and rarely Colonies. That 2nd part also goes for Duke. W/ Gardens, there's usually gaining(often Workshop, and not talking about base games.) Lots of other stuff, like knights not showing up on Colony boards etc.

i read too much into patterns, like my friend gets a lot of boards with Herald, Candlestick Maker, and/or Advisor among others. But that's just luck, not a conspiracy(maybe)  :)

This was really bad, like I'm shocked it creates boards this unplayable. No buys or actions, no actions kinda ruins Torturer, practically just a Smithy. Wild Hunt becomes a joke, and no way to get more than 2 cards w/ Library except gaining an action w/ Ironworks, which is ofc more harm than good. I shouldn't have bought that Armory, Silver is the only card worth gaining.

I think we all were too stubborn to play BM, Advisor just gets in the way once you draw them dead, should buy 1 Torturer/other draw(plenty to choose from lol,) and then buy money, pretty much exclusively.

Kinda absurd, has anyone else got such a depressing board?

I messed up, ignored Quarry because there was no +buy, but knights were great here. Few other mistakes too, notably that I remember Wishing Well was a misclick I didn't feel like asking to undo. Oh, and that Ghost Ship lol. But somehow I won! The combination of Outpost and Guide is really helpful, and Workshops sorta made up for having most of my cards trashed. Ironmonger is really great, only possible Village besides Necropolis. Death Cart is fun too, that +5 coin, potentially even if it's your only action, can be a lifesaver.

Anyways really shocked I won, this was fun.

Playing a kingdom with a lot of cards that compete for a buy since they can do similar things might be interesting. If anyone wants to do that, please let me know. Hopefully I can start connecting to the server.

I've picked up a Mine a couple of times recently on two similar boards to trash coppers into CoTRs, which in both cases was the only way to thin. Felt good!

Mine can be really good w/ alt-treasure for sure. Fool's Gold is a big one, and I think of Crown and Charm. Treasures that make themselves obsolete or just worse than Gold at some point, like Potion and Quarry sometimes. Really any alt-treasure helps for more options. It'd be interesting to see a board w/ 2+ good treasures where you actually shouldn't buy a Mine.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's discuss Alchemy cards: Transmute
« on: June 07, 2017, 04:25:24 pm »
I get the general dislike of Transmute, but I'm pretty sure I buy it at least half the times it appears, maybe to be contrary, partly cause I feel smarter winning with it.

I still don't think I'd call it good, exactly, but it has plenty of uses. Ruins are a big one, even early you'd rarely prefer a ruin to a Duchy. Ofc it's better to just trash them for nothing rather thb a dead card early, but you can still have some exceptions like Battlefield. Trashing for a Duchy is the main thing I get out of them, nice endgame sometimes. Naturally much weaker with Colonies, but if the game is a bit slow it can be a huge help. Also this'll combo somewhat w/ things like Silk Road and Duke. Potentially Duchess. Groundskeeper to some extent. Also, multi-type cards can help. For instance, Mill to a Gold and a Duchy, and that pair is also probably better than putting your Transmute or another non-junk card on an Island. This could further combo w/ cards that gain from the trash.

Buying Transmute just fer Curses is not worth it usually, since that Potion becomes a bit of a dead card too. But if it's the only trasher this might make sense, particularly if Market Square is on the board for instance.

Buying it early for Estates is bad, I don't think I've tried that, but I'm not inclined to. Quite slow to get 1 Gold, just buy a Silver over that Potion if nothing else. But trashing Victory cards can still be really good, for instance if you'll be getting Estates(Wild Hunt, Ambassador, Triumph, Followers, etc.) Also if you get hit by a Swindler for an early VP card.

The main time for it is w/ +buy and another potion card, I definitely get it more times there. Plus if the Curses run out Familiars become pretty useless, odds are you wouldn't want one then. I suppose on a similar note w/ +buy and stuff you could get a bunch of Transmutes(also by Transmuting treasure) since your opponent might not since it has a bad reputation. That could matter if it's the Obelisk, or possibly for Orchard or even Tower.

I can't think of anything too noteworthy I've done with Transmute, but I generally don't keep track. Might post a game where I use it and they don't for posterity sometime. Still I think it's undervalued.

Also if there's plentiful +action but not much draw(say Moat is the biggest,) is getting Mine asap important? Assume that there's nothing like Highway, Rebuild, or Mountebank that'd likely make it no, and there's also no particular synergy for it, like Plats, good alt-treasure, throne room and variants, etc. This imaginary game doesn't have tons of junking so that it might turn into a slog, and neither is it gonna be over really fast.
It is pretty much never important to get Mine asap. The only board where Mine might be a key card is if there's no other Copper trashing, engine potential, limited sifting and Gold is the best payload.
[/quote]

Ok, I know people say Mine isn't that great and I can kinda see that. Mainly I was wondering this because Mine helps more the more shuffles you have left, so the earlier the better. I'd actually expect sifting to help, though the rest makes sense. But sifting would help you see your Mine faster. idk. I've heard Mine-BM is bad and that makes sense, and an engine would rather buy a Gold and hopefully draw it, or get more engine pieces. So Mine doesn't really have much use in the majority of kingdoms it's in, yes?

It's harder to compare $2 and $4 cards like Chapel and Remake directly, but I'm pretty sure that everyone would agree that Chapel is by far the more powerful card. If you see them together, you skip Remake the majority of the time. I know what you're thinking. Estates become Silvers. Eww. Forget that. Take the Chapel chainsaw to your deck and lose the starters.

Remodel is emphatically NOT a trasher. Expand is not a trasher. These aren't even considered middling trashers.[/quote[

No, that makes sense Chapel is pretty great. And with upgrading cards my thinking was you're you'd be getting something that's better than nothing, so not actually reducing the size of your deck wouldn't really be an issue(edge cases like Wall ofc.) But that's not always the case, and trasher is the wrong word anyways.

The title of your thread is "comparing power cards" but then you list a kingdom with several decidedly non-power cards on it. Warehouse, Remodel, Salvager, Lost City, Altar and Expand are definitely not power cards. They're all good sometimes and they all have their place, but they're not cards that make alarm bells go off when you see them.

So definitely do some reading.

As far as comparing power trashers goes, I'd rate the trashers in this order:

Donate
Chapel
Steward
Remake

Yes, that's misleading. The title was really just about the main ones like Chapel, for the kingdom I threw in some other cards that I wonder about. Warehouse doesn't fit the trashing theme at all so I'll change that. Thanks for your opinion of the trashers, the top two are certainly what I'd expect. Not sure about Steward vs. Remake, but I doubt it'll usually hurt very much to open one over the other anyways.
