Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Barracks - Three fan cards
« on: December 22, 2011, 02:11:41 am »
For Cadet: I could either have the gained card go into your hand, so it's only useful if you've got extra Actions, or onto the deck.

For Archery Range: If it were two cards put in hand, it would be strictly better than Lab, and would need a raise in price.  I could add a +$1 as a bonus to help distinguish it from Cartographer, and remove the optional discard?

For Ballista: How about +2 Actions?  I don't think there's an Attack Village at all yet.  It would make them easy to spam, and be better than Shanty Town at least.  Would spammability make it too strong, or would that justify buying it?

What would make Archery Range better?  What would make Ballista better?  Does Cadet need to be nerfed somehow?

Variants and Fan Cards / Dominion: Barracks - Three fan cards

CARDS HAVE BEEN MODIFIED - SEE DISCUSSION.

So, I've tried my hand at creating fan cards before.  The first batch were kinda silly and filled with newbie mistakes, the next batch was a little better, but not overly remarkable.  So what I'm trying to do now is two things: 1) Try to make what the card does fit its name, and 2) Make a card that does something that hasn't been done before, would not be overpowered, and would be something you'd actually want to buy and play.  Please forgive the images - I don't seem to have the correct font for the cards, and don't know how to use MSE to change the font, and I don't know how to put in the little coin symbols into the text of the card.  Here we go:

$5 - Archery Range – +1 Action.  Look at the top five cards of your deck.  Put one in your hand.  Discard one.  Put the rest back on top of your deck in any order.

I wanted a card called "Archery Range," so I thought of what that would entail.  Well, archery means hitting a target at a distance, so that led to thinking of the distance into your deck.  So it would be like a mixture of Hunting Party and Scout, or rather, what you've always wanted Scout to be.  And it also lets you discard one card, so it works well with Tunnels.  Even without Tunnels, it lets you get rid of a card you don't want in your hand anytime soon.

$2 – Cadet – Action – Trash this card.  Gain an Action card costing $3 or $4 and put it on top of your deck.

Again, starting with the name.  What does a cadet do?  It gets promoted.  How can I get across an idea of promotion?  Well, we can make it trash itself and give you something better.  Hell, right away.  So it's an odd mixture of Feast and Golem.  Don't you hate those 5/2 splits sometimes?  Well, buy a Cadet, and you can pretend you got 5/4!  Also, Remodeling this card would be stupid.

$4 – Ballista – Action-Attack – Each other player reveals the top four cards of their deck.  They discard one card that you choose, and put the rest back in any order you choose.

Ballista!  Love these.  Being a weapon, I assume this would be an attack.  It's essentially a big bow and arrow, so it should work similarly to the Archery Range, just in someone else's deck.  So you spy at the top 4 cards of their deck, and discard one of the cards (selective oracle!).  But why let them choose the order it goes back?  Screw with them, and put the Coppers on top of the Gold, so their Laboratory won't find it this turn.  Should this have some effect for the player in case everyone reveals a Moat?  Or is this powerful enough in the vein of Thief and Sea Hag?

Adventurer is not a meme.

But Adventurer is not a meme could be a meme...

I think you miss the point that the Adventurer is theory's (our administrator) avatar.  And YES I'M QUOTING THE IMAGE.  MWAHAHA.

This is one of my favorite topics so far.

Let me just add:

Scumbag Santa knows what your subconscious wants.  ;D
No... Now you've done it. The great nation of ponies is coming to attack! All manly men to arms! Villagers man your Villages! Jesters Keep Jestering! Jack Of All Trades Teach the others how to be manlier men! And most important of all, Coppersmiths, I hereby order you all to, become Goldsmiths or join the ponies  8)

So what, women aren't allowed to play Dominion?  I'm sure the nice lady on the Forge card would beg to differ.

But if it was in an IRL game, not shuffling is a bonus!

But I haven't seen my Vaults in ages...  ;_;

So, you are above turn fifty I presume? Log or it didn't happen.

It was an exaggeration, and the game was in person, not in iso.  Still felt like fifty, though.

« on: December 20, 2011, 12:02:43 pm »
For me:

Library - Up to seven cards?  That's only two more cards...  Smithy is better than that...  Oftentimes for me it takes actually playing a card to get an idea of its value.  I <3 Library.

Any trasher - Why would I want to get rid of cards?  Uh durr durr...

Steward - I started off "meh" on it, but now I love it.  Dearly.

Trading Post - "But Mine is sooo much better!" Not in early game, it's not...

Saboteur - originally thought this was the most evil thing to do to someone.  Then I realized it is evil, but only in certain situations, like when you've bought 7 of the Cities, and want to sabotage your opponent's Cities.  Other than that, it's a waste of an Action.

Caravan - "It's only a cantrip - what good is that?"

Vault - "Oh.  That looks... interesting..."

Rabble - "Messing with the top of your opponent's deck isn't THAT distressing."  "NOOOO MY GRAND MARKETS!!!!"

Dominion General Discussion / Black Market makes things weird... o.O
« on: December 20, 2011, 12:46:18 am »
This is the weirdest (and closest) game I think I've ever played on isotropic.  Getting a Sea Hag, a Harem and a Tactician out of the Black Market (and no villages at all) was just surreal.

Anyone else had Black Market lead to Dali-esque matches?

Rules Questions / Re: Another query - Cellar/Tunnel/Watchtower
« on: December 19, 2011, 06:03:10 pm »
Amazing.  A situation where discarding 3 cards via Cellar is better than playing Warehouse.

I'd say "take that, theory!" but that would just foster ill-feelings all 'round.  It is, admittedly, a very specific instance.

Rules Questions / Another query - Cellar/Tunnel/Watchtower
« on: December 19, 2011, 04:30:10 pm »
This may have been asked already.  If I have a Cellar, Watchtower, and three Tunnels in my hand, and I play Cellar, discarding the three tunnels, am I allowed to Watchtower the three Golds to the top of my deck and draw them as my new Cellar cards?  I guess what I'm asking is, does the "do concurrent effects in any order" apply in cases where one effect takes place in the middle of another card's effects?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Farmland vs Silver
« on: December 19, 2011, 04:24:18 pm »
Let's say you have $8 through whatever, plus a Gold.  With two Buys, that would mean just getting a Province and an Estate - 7 points.  Or, you could buy a Farmland, remodeling the Gold into a Province - 8 points.  Plus this works if you only have one Buy anyway.  Or you could Farmland an Adventurer or Border Village into a Province.

Mountebank, because then your opponents will be convinced that you only won because you got the Mountebank and your friends won't want to play with the Black Market ever again.

Also for your Opponents - Masquerade and Ambassador.  The best defense against these is to get the card yourself, and if they can't do that, they're screwed, and will hate you.

7821
Duchess.  If they come free with Duchies, it seems kinda silly to have to pay for it in this instance.

Also less so, but perhaps Smugglers or Workshop if you're playing a game dominated by Potion cost cards.

Not sure where to put this...

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201112/15/game-20111215-231652-9b509cb5.html

I'm teaching a friend how to play online.  Notice Chapel, Grand Market, and two Cursers.

Lessons to take from this:
1)Always Chapel away every Copper and Estate.
2)Buy Cursers early, and use them early and often.
3)Don't let your opponent monopolize the Grand Markets.  I was getting $30+ every turn.
4)With Grand Market and Platinum on the board, ignore Treasure Map and ignore Spice Merchant (unless there's no other trasher).

I was able to empty piles with all the money and plus buys, so I didn't buy any Victory cards until my last turn.  So I had little use for Warehouse - Witch was a much better drawer, which gave my opponent Curses as an added bonus.  So please, don't play like my friend.  And he can most definitely be excused - this was only his fourth game.  The previous one, he managed to get 3 out of 5 Provinces, so he's not totally hopeless.
2 is the only one I really agree with, though 3 is very often true as well. There are lots of times though, where I don't want to chapel that much away, even when I want to get chapel (and lots of times I'd skip chapel altogether!) And the TM thing people have already talked about.

Chapeling makes your deck so much better, but it only works if you Chapel everything.  If you're saving some Coppers to buy things while you have your Chapel in hand, but your opponent is trashing everything, there may be a couple turns where you've got more buying power than he does, but then he will overwhelm you.

With Chapel in the mix, Spice Merchant is just too slow to get rid of your coppers.  I'd be willing to play a more experienced player sometime on the same board and see if Spice Merchant or Treasure Map become more necessary.

Followers seems significantly weakened with Sea Hag on board, especially if both players open Sea Hag.

It would still be the only discarding attack on the board.  And Bag of Gold would be great to have, because the Golds might help relieve the mush created by all the Curses.  And then you can Transmute them into Duchies.  Either way, you really should never let your opponent get all the Tournaments.
