Dear Wimlore,
I'm sorry I made you suffer through a 0-4 province comeback with a pawn/sp/saboteur engine.

Help! / Re: Goons game ... bad luck or bad play?
« on: September 10, 2012, 12:44:58 pm »
For a 4/3 start: really trade route/loan?  I just hate opening trade route.  I'd rather get something going early with caravan/loan or silver/loan, getting 2 caravans max then menag.  This makes it reasonable to hope for a $7.  If not maybe a $6 and while the early goons isn't necessary, it's pretty good for economy.

Can you explain why this would give a second player advantage?

Game Reports / Re: Fun Hunting Party twist and questions
« on: August 28, 2012, 04:18:40 pm »
A point of interest here is that hunting parties alone will not draw the duplicate cards needed for a big king's court/bridge hand.
Nah, I think it works out just as well, if not better, than lab.  If you draw KC KC HP x x after buying sufficient bridge and KC then you'll get there.  A KC'd HP will probably get you another KC, bridge, and hunting party.  Just play KC on
1) KC, first priority
2) Bridge, if you will still have 2 KC-zaps left in the chain (so you can hit hunting party, then whatever hunting party draws)
3) Hunting party

I'm almost certain I've used this, and I'm absolutely certain that it's been used against me but in a colony game.

Even though vineyards were worth more points, since you control the game you might as well get gardens and end it on the three pile like you did.  It stops your opponent from being able to recover at all because it's faster than buying potions first.  I think you made the right choice there.

Game Reports / Re: Avoiding Apprentice in Possession Games
« on: August 26, 2012, 12:23:19 pm »
His apprentice buy was actually right, he just didn't need possession at all.

I don't know if I believe you.  It's gonna be a long game.  KC'd possession can give a huge swing in your favor, if your opponents deck is equal in goodness to yours.  As it turned out it chunkywoo connected KC Mountebank first and it looks like ednever was struggling from then on.  But if that hadn't happened, the eight times ednever had been possessed would have actually been important for chunkywoo.

Look at it this way: if ednever hadn't gotten the possession, there was no way he could recover.  Granted he got potion after he got hit by KC Mountebank, so maybe that's a point for your side of the argument.  I do think chunkywoo jumped for potion early, with a deck that looked like
2 silvers, MB, oracle, KC, apprentice, curse, copper (8 ), estate (3)
6p won't happen except for maybe in a hand like KC, MB, potion, xx or KC, Oracle, xxx.

Game Reports / Re: One of the coolest torturer games I've played
« on: August 25, 2012, 06:50:52 pm »
With forge and double tac possibilities, I wonder if you could ignore torturer.  Here I would try

Consp/silver
Some mining village, conspirators at $4
Tactician first two fives
Forge ASAP
And I guess throw in torturer just for draw, after I have two tacticians.

If you get tactician and forge quickly enough I think you can delay entering the torturer war.  Getting 3 estates in yourfirst forging would be amazing.  And you can trash hard before your opponent is hitting you with 2+ torturers.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Building Scrying Pool Decks
« on: August 24, 2012, 01:21:34 pm »
I think the decision process is similar to amb/amb vs. amb/silver.  If there's stuff that will help your your sp deck at $4-, then get the potion now.  But if the board looks like

2p: Scrying Pool
4-: Militia, some boring stuff, terminals
5+: Oh my gosh I want these cards they give +buy there are some nice cantrips maybe some attacks or trashing

Then get the militia now, and potion later.  You'll be able to hit the nice $5's, and stop your opponent from getting them.  Hopefully the $5's will help you catch up in the SP race.  Similarly replace Militia with Navigator (not as good of course but also useful once sp is rolling), Moneylender (quite nice I think), Salvager, probably some other things.

59
Implementation:  Use rejection sampling on kingdom sets.  Both players see the randomly drawn kingdoms, get 5 (2, 3?) minutes to analyze it, and then privately write down a kingdom card that the opponent can't buy/gain.  If they write down the same card, start over.
I hope you don't mind me going back a page to disagree with this.
I agree that mirror matches are boring, but I think this implementation has problems.  For instance, chapel.  Chapel is just sooo game changing, even if a board has multiple options.  This will practically mean that chapel isn't used.  Yeah, I mean there's board when it's an interesting decision whether or not to chapel, but I think this will just kill many interesting games.
Same goes for other power cards: KC, hunting party, torturer where chainable.

Such as:

Transverse universe- $8
Play a game of Age of Empires II with all the players.  If you win:
If you got to the dark age, gain two estates.
If you got to the feudal age, gain two duchies.
If you got to the castle age, gain two provinces.
If you got to the imperial age, gain two colonies.
Trash this card.

and you always want to keep at most 2 rats in your deck.
Well, it never* hurts to use rats to trash a curse.

*Mandatory disclaimer about edge cases such as fairgrounds or I want to upgrade to a $1 card etc

...
I would just go for Lab - Upgrade/Rats acts as a Lab - I'd rather just get one Upgrade, rather than lots of Rats.  Now, if Lab were not on the board, say instead you had City, then I'd go Rats/Upgrade and try to empty the Rats pile.  Maybe.
I don't agree.  With fishing village there's no reason to not get margraves, for better draw and an attack.  Upgrade/Rats is very unlike Lab, it does not increase your hand size.  Upgrade/Rats is: replace upgrade/rats with two new cards, trash the rats, gain a $5 card.  I want more than one upgrade against witch.

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: The Bold Predictions Thread

Ok I'll bite on rats.
If the following 3 conditions are met:
-You're being cursed/looted (less necessary)
-There is (pretty good) trash for benefit
-You're making an engine
then rats will be pretty good.

Let's see:
Fishing Village, Oasis,
Rats, Horse Traders, Noble Brigand
Upgrade, Witch, Margrave, Lab, Horn of Plenty

(Besides Rats, all non DA because I'm not familiar enough with the rest of the set.)  I'd like to try this: fv/silver and hope for $5 turn 3 or 4: get Margrave. Get a rats.  Then get FV/FV/Upgrade on 3/4/5.  Well, hold back on the rats if you haven't got enough upgrades yet.  Don't play rats or buy rats if it would put your # of rats more than 1 over # of upgrades.  Upgrade rats to Margrave or Lab depending on how many FV you have.  Once you have enough upgrades (5?) hit the drawing cards, or move on to HoP.

You need like, five upgrades here, that's the big problem.  It seems like a lot of work to upgrade your upgrade, so to speak.  But see, I think the +1 card from trashing rats is big enough; I think it makes up for the times when I don't want to play rats.  And rememember this is the bold predictions thread, I haven't actually played with rats :)

I would call isotropic cross platform because you can use it on any computer.  I would even call something which ran on only windows and Macintosh cross platform, even though I use LInux.  I guess it might be reasonable to say this is not a standard definition now.

Since Wikipedia is the ultimate judge of truth, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-platform agrees with me.
But isn't it obvious that they mean "both runs on desktop browsers and is optimized for mobile browsers"?
To us who know what isotropic is, yes.  But to people who don't, it's ambiguous and the common definition goes against what they're saying.  I disclaim that I was just itching for things to call them out on because I'm bitter.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Dark Ages on Iso a Possibility?
« on: August 19, 2012, 06:36:57 pm »
Here's anecdotal evidence.  [insert: for "they get more money because DA is not on iso"]

I'm trying to play less dominion online.  I've played maybe 3 games on iso in the passed week.  If dark ages was on iso right now I would play it.  I recently bought more physical dominion to satisfy my appetite.
Since I'm trying to kick the habit, I probably won't buy all the expansions on Goko.  I might buy dark ages though, just because I would never have had the opportunity play dark ages in an online (good players) setting.  If it had been on iso it would be on the same footing as all the expansions- low interest.

Seriously. There would be zero downside to them (except the embarrassment factor) to just buying iso...
Except they want to go beyond Dominion.  If they used isotropic then they couldn't go to other people and say, "Hi, look at this thing Dominion which we programmed please let us make your official application."

I guess that's included in embarrassment factor but it's a really big deal to a new company.

Dominion Articles / Re: All-around cards

Not sure what you mean here exactly, but Laboratory is the canonical goes-well-with-everything card. Also, Masquerade was (sort of) Jack before Jack was Jack.
Also masquerade fits the question in two ways.

Game Reports / Re: Double Jack vs. Familiar+Goons
« on: August 19, 2012, 04:30:12 pm »
I'd like to see the log.  Remember that you can't just trust the simulators either.  There might be adjustments that a goons/familiar player might want to make against jack.  Were these the only two cards your opponent bought?

Also, I would think the jack player would want to buy more than 2 jacks going up against goons & familiar.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Keeping your friends

It's hard to find a good handicap for dominion.  Skipping the first two turns can actually be too much if there's any attack, I think.

I like the blank card thing; the only thing it affects from the newbie's end is, as mentioned, it devalues militia.  I think that's not important and the blank cards can be adjusted well.

Another possibility is restricting the kingdom cards for the handicapped.  Don't allow yourself kings court or hunting party or maybe 4 cards at random.  ("Ok, if I play with scout I can definitely kick your ass, so I'm just gonna not buy it because it won't be fun for you.")  This is a bit more "natural" in that it doesn't really affect the power of cards for the newbie.  The only way it does affect the game is that the newbie can get, say, 8 minions with no contest.  It can also be adjusted pretty well for difficulty; but this requires the person being handicapped to really know the game already.

Game Reports / Re: grand market, fools gold, chapel
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:59:53 am »
I really wouldn't think you want to empty GM and definitely not fools gold before getting provinces. I think ideally you can get to
chapel
4 fools gold
6 grand market
pretty quickly.  Then you hit a triple province turn, and slow down, but buy provinces+gm/fg from then on.

And yes, there's certainly strategies which can beat this.

This is a hidden up-side to Pirate Ship btw; if opponents block the attack, you can still take the money.
There are also rarer situations where you go out of your way to play the minion attack; it helps there.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why is Curse a base card?

There's something I like about cards that aren't usually useful.  It's very rewarding when you find a way to use them.  The number of times when it's obviously a dead card is offset by the coolness of finding a time when it's not.
