I opened with double Mountebank, then lost the Curse split.

.
.
.

There was Ferry, Stonemason and Lost City. My opponent Ferried the Lost Cities and then bought one. I Ferried Mountebank T1, his T2 Lost City drew me a 5th Copper and I got two Mountebanks on T2. Then he blocked just about every attack after the second, got a pair of Mountebanks himself later (T8 or so) and proceeded to win the Curse split 7-3. No trashing on the board other than Stonemason.

Warrior trashing Warrior has happened in my first ever Page game when Adventures came out on MF online, in my first ever IRL Page game and in many other Page games I've played. Never stops sucking.

Rules Questions / Type of Pile
« on: February 09, 2017, 12:48:58 pm »
What determines the types of a pile? Is it the top card while there is one and if the pile is empty, the randomizer?
Please confirm or correct the following statements:
  • I can use Pathfinding to put my +card token on the Encampment/Plunder pile while the top card is Encampment
  • Encampment/Plunder is an Action pile when the top card is Encampment or when the pile is empty
  • Encampment/Plunder is a Treasure pile when the top card is Plunder
  • I can not use Pathfinding to put my +card token on the Encampment/Plunder pile while the top card is Plunder
  • I can use Pathfinding to put my +card token on the Castles pile while the top card is Small Castle or Opulent Castle, but not any other castle
  • The Castles pile is a Treasure/Victory/Castle pile at the start of the game
  • The Castles pile is a Victory/Castle pile when it's empty

Was Empires designed with Dark Ages interactions in mind or did that just work out that way? Seems like there are a lot of cute combos/counters when mixing those sets.

You've stated before that originally you used one copy of each card as randomizers rather than having dedicated randomizers, and that this made Black Market setup quick and easy. Now that those blue-backed randomizers exist, do you use them? Do you pick events/landmarks by shuffling them into the randomizer deck or some other way? How do you do Black Market setup, particularly in regard to split piles?

Also, what is your favorite landmark and why?

I admit that the first paragraph is like 20% interview question and 80% looking for advice, sorry.

« on: January 02, 2017, 07:02:08 am »
My bad, I assumed "Gardener" was just a typo given the specification "straight Garden for four", which makes it sound like you were also gaining Gardens in some other way than buying them directly.

I had fun over the holidays in a Gardens game Banqueting a Gardener for three, get a straight Garden for four and an Estate for two.

Then you were cheating, Banquet doesn't gain Victory cards.

Haunted Woods vs Villa

Having a Haunted Woods in play turns off most of the crazy things your opponent would otherwise be able to do with Villa. A counter rather than a combo, does this belong here?

64
The cost might as well be $8/4D, since you get double money next turn

That's not how you math.

How much/what information do the artists get other than card names? How much of the art concept is up to them? Was Wild Hunt supposed to have green spirits and a surprised moon for example?

66
I would love to playtest as well.

I got Adventures the other day and noticed that the events have the same background as kingdom cards, not the one used for randomizers. Why is that? Wasn't the idea for choosing which events to play with "shuffle them into the randomizer pile, flip over cards until you have ten kingdom cards, ignore events past the first two"? There doesn't seem to be any upside to events looking like cards (in the rules sense) from behind since you're never shuffling them into your deck or looking at the backside at all during gameplay.

3.) There hasn't been a draw to X card in quite a while, what's up with that? Do you consider that mechanic more of an exotic variant to regular draw instead of a basic game mechanic? It saddens me a little that draw to X engines are pretty rare, they're so much fun.

Diplomat is draw to X, except it's not completely busted in the situations that Library would be busted in and not completely useless in the situations were Library would be that. So that is one fairly recently released draw to X card. Apart from that, Empires couldn't have one because of Villa, Adventures couldn't have one because of Artificer (maybe not so bad) and Guilds was a small set and as such didn't have a lot of things. And before then half the sets did have draw to X.

Quote
1.) A lot of the Landmarks are basically "do this specific thing, get 2VP for it six times". Did you every try those with 1 or 3VP?

From The Secret History:

Colonnade: It was 1 VP when buying an Action you had in play, then 2 VP, then 2 VP with a limited supply of VP.

Diplomat / Courtier

Play Courtier, reveal Diplomat, and take +1 Action and Gold/+$3/+Buy. Then a play Diplomat, and it becomes a Lost City. You can build (lame) engines using this combination.

In the same vein, Diplomat+Mill, Diplomat+Minion, Courtier+Minion and Mill+Shanty Town. You start to wonder if maybe Intrigue intentionally got a (pseudo-) draw-to-X subtheme...

72
In absence of draw, Minion hurts your next hand, rather than the one after it, like Relic does.
If you have draw, Relic hurts your next draw, just like Fortune Teller and Sea Hag. Minion does nothing like that, even though the 4-random-cards hand hurts your likelihood of starting your engine more than say Militia.

So the deciding factor is not the way in which they hurt you but rather the timing of it? Because a hand that has been hit by a Minion attack is going to be exactly as good on average as a hand that has been hit by Relic, it's just four random cards (as opposed to the three out of five with Militia for example).

73
You counted Relic as a topdeck attack but Minion as a discard attack? How are they not the same? I think counting them as topdeck attacks makes sense.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Ranking of the Average Card
« on: October 23, 2016, 04:38:48 pm »
I think OP may have conflated "average" with "mediocre". If an averagely powerful card is pretty good pretty often, that's actually just a sign of good card design. It's evidence that the best strategy will often involve a bunch of cards on the board and not just two or three.

On the point of movie ratings etc.: People learn how to rate something based on the rating more experienced people give. So people are bad at grading because other people are also bad at grading, I don't think humans have a disposition to give better ratings than they should. Also your perception might be influenced by the fact that you look up reviews of above average films more often than you look up reviews of below average films since you're less likely to have heard of the latter.
