Mafia Game Threads / Re: f.ds Mafia Hub
« on: March 22, 2017, 12:52:50 pm »
We just need one more normal game other than RR's to get us to M100, which will be a little bit of an event, so I can moderate one if no one else jumps on it.  I am a little surprised that LaLight's game hasn't filled yet.  Must be a lull in people having time or something.

I'm impatient for his to start both because I want to play in it, and because I'm holding off opening RMM42 (which I'm excited about!) until RMM41 gets underway.

With 9 alive, it takes 5 to lynch. Day 1 ends Tuesday, March 28th at 5pm forum time.

Andrew is both voting me and not voting. Meanwhile gkrieg has evaporated...

It was a joke lol. Trying to convince people of things that are wrong

Hey, there's photographic evidence of what several of us look like over in the "Post your photo" thread.

You know who's most interested in convincing people of lies? Scum...

3304
Semirandomly calling Robz/Joseph/Jake or Andrew scumteam. Just to see if i was right in the end

Two scums, my friend! You really haven't been looking much at the set-up, huh? :-P

3305
Ya I think LaLight is town now.  unvote

I'm inclined to feel townier on you for this exchange, but tell me, were you deliberately putting pressure on LL given how he can get flustered, or did you genuinely think he'd slipped?

3306
11 pages into M88. I can't wait to see Jake in action in this game.

He's very young, and actively improving. I'm going to scumread anyone who goes out of the way to rile him up based on his early games. Set a good example rather than digging for old dirt :-)

3307
Ok, so I stopped voting for WW every RVS because someone says it's boring and apparently I'm self-conscious.

You know what's even more boring? Voting for me, ever! You've done it so many times, and gotten me mislynched so many times that there's just no novelty value in it any more... :-P

vote: Space

(This vote is not strictly because he said not to, kinda.)

Space is using "they" as a pronoun, or "she" :)

Thanks, LL :-)

Nice to meet you, Andrew!

Any function you can get by summing an arbitrarily large series of sine waves can also be an actual physical sound. I actually have no idea why you would think otherwise in the first place. I would argue that since we aren't capable of hearing an infinitely high frequency, it actually helps our intuition more because you only need a finite series of sine waves to perfectly replicate any sound to the degree that anyone can tell, which makes it possible to demonstrate it physically.

This is how additive synthesis works, by the way.

So what you're really saying is that what we call sounds are band-pass-filtered versions of those "arbitrarily large series of sine waves", which I broadly agree with.

The thing is, with music, most people are so used to thinking about something that relates to frequency space (i.e. notes) that it's not at all surprising to hear that playing two notes at once adds up sounds. We also tend to name them (mostly) after the fundamental frequency, and most of us certainly can't listen to a square wave and comment intuitively about its various frequency components and their offsets or ratios, so we automatically simplify out some of the interesting detail. I just somehow find it more surprising and neat to be able to represent a sawtooth wave (or anything else that's defined based on its appearance in the spatial domain rather than the frequency domain) as a bunch of sines.

Not sure if joke went over head or if explaining joke to make funnier.

In order to fully explain gkreig's explanation of your joke, you really have to go and read the setup, though. What did you make of it?

But you're always bad.......

Hey, my play may be questionable sometimes, but I've almost never been scum!

So, I think I have a scheme for the rolecop to be able to claim his results every day, but so that he is also able to hide.  This is important if the rolecop dies, people will be able to look at his results.  So, for this to work, at the beginning of every day, each person posts something to the effect of "if I were a rolecop, I would've investigated [person] and gotten [result]".  This way, scum can't know for sure who the rolecop is, but even if they die, their results will be meaningful.

This is interesting. There's a bit of a risk that scum could PoE the RC based on VTs giving implausible results. Maybe the expected game length is short enough not to make it too much of a risk, but it's kind of like certain VTs claiming "not a PR", which we'd usually think is kind of anti-town.

Though if I play with this idea for a minute, why limit it just to the RC? Why not have every player, at the start of every day, claim a result/action for every PR that might be in the game? That means everyone giving a RC result, a tracker result, a watcher result, a doctor target, and a JK target. I mean, on the one hand, it seems ridiculous, but on the other hand, it will make every player reveal real reads on trusted or suspicious players, which we can query, as well as recording game information to use for the good of town after a flip.

It's clearly anti-town not to give a valid list of thought-out targets with plausible results with that strategy, because if you say something cheeky/rushed, then scum pretty much assume you're a VT and go after the more valuable people. I'd just worry that it would actually take a fair amount of town self-discipline to achieve correctly, and that maybe even nine people is too many to cat-heard into playing along, when two of them are actively against us.

3312
Wow straight into the setup talk.
That's unusual.
I'll try and contribute today, although my time management skills are poor.

I was wondering where my fellow Brit had gone, now that it's all daytime-y over here.

Poor time management is what leads to too much forum time, no?

yeah but that's way too complicated. I also don't find it impressive.

I didn't totally believe my tech studies teacher in high school when he told me I could make any periodic signal just out of summing sine waves...it just didn't seem intuitive to me at the time, so I'd assumed there would have had to be a lot of caveats, and that it wouldn't work for anything particularly interesting. It wasn't till a few years later at university that I met the actual maths behind it and understood how neat it was :-)

First is indeed suspiciously cheap, especially considering that it is supposed to be located in one of the most trendy neighborhoods of Berlin.

2 & 3 are a bit further out, which may be mildly annoying. Public transport is decent and fairly cheap though.

Yeah, there are more central places, but they're more costly. I guess it depends on getting a balance between how much we want to hang out as a group and how much we want to be out doing touristy stuff. There are some cheaper hostel places I've found too now, but they don't seem to have kitchens (which is a minus for me, and overall means spending more on food), and they wouldn't have the same privacy to hang out together and play Mafia/Dominoin/stuff.

For travel, I think I had one of these things last time: https://www.berlin-welcomecard.de/en/buy-tickets

3316
Will post setup stuff later.

Is it later yet? I'm about to go to bed, but hopefully by the time I'm awake again, you and LL will have posted lots of lovely setup thoughts. Shame there's no Calamitas this game to want to talk about setup theory. At least there's still PPS, though!

My personal pre-game thoughts were limited to hoping not to be scum in the compulsive visitor setup, since that sounded like a tough one. The dayvig one is a neat concept, and would make us a convenient IC if it happens... all my Werewolf experience prior to coming to f.ds to play mafia was with dayvigs, but we tended to put in one of each alignment precisely to prevent the IC-ification thing.

Also: no vote for WW?? :o

True that. tbh I have never used airbnb and don't really know how it works :)

It's really easy... it's just people who have properties in a location renting them out for a while. There's a lot that's just people's spare rooms and stuff, but then there are also entire apartments. The big risk compare to hotels is that I don't think the hosts are penalised a lot for cancelling on guests, so I've had a couple of tense experiences trying to rebook at the last minute after my good-value early booking has fallen through.

Assuming we'll have something like 8 guests, then here's a little selection are some possibilities. I'm assuming that ~£25 per person per night is a reasonable rate, since that's cheaper than most hostels (presumably other people will be shown their local currencies, and the pound is horribly weak compared to the Euro at the moment, so these may look cheaper to people who aren't me!).

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/17811565?checkin=2017-08-08&checkout=2017-08-13&guests=8 -- Suspiciously cheap for what it claims to be, but that might just be because it's a new listing. OTOH, there's probably an even bigger risk of cancellation than an established place, especially if the rates go up between now and August.

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/16688037?checkin=2017-08-08&checkout=2017-08-13&guests=8 -- Looks pretty spacious, and works out at £28pppn

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/16970008?checkin=2017-08-08&checkout=2017-08-13&guests=8 -- Just over £30pppn. Crams a bunch of people into each bedroom, but at least there are lots of beds!

https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/3521369?guests=12&adults=12&s=XtKzoHfX&check_in=2017-08-08&check_out=2017-08-13 -- if we have a bigger gang of people, this place looks really amazing, but it's not cost-effective for a group of 8 (though still cheaper than a cheap hotel!).

I guess faust and gkrieg are the ones we're waiting for in terms of dates.

For accommodation, faust said he may be able to put people up, but perhaps a more robust plan is to book an airbnb for a bunch of us? I went to Berlin about a year ago, and the Airbnb I'd booked then was really great. It was a holiday with my parents, we weren't looking at the budget end of the spectrum so much, but the cheaper ones are similar in cost to a hostel, and presumably give us more privacy for playing games and stuff as a group :-) OTOH, I've had airbnb hosts cancel on me at relatively short notice befor... I'll bet it's a lot worse trying to re-book somewhere for a bigger bunch of people, rather than just for me traveling solo.

You math people are so cute. It's why I stay here.

Sometimes I have to pretend to be a normal human female person. Talk about scary!

What do you do for a living outside in the real world if you can get by without maths?

What language is that?

total = (EndAge+StartAge)*(EndAge-StartAge+1)/2, for what it's worth. No idea why you are computing that though.

formula checks out.

If you want a direct formula, try: EndAge = -0.5+sqrt(2)*sqrt(66.125+TotalMoney)

The two things you need to know to derive that are just:
1) The sum of a set of numbers from 1 to N inclusive is 0.5*N*(N+1);
2) The Quadratic Formula.
(And then just a bit of rearranging to tidy it up).

Does sin(x) (with some parameters) describe water waves exactly, or does it just look kind of similar because they're both round and go up and down?

I can't find an answer to this simple question through google!

Have you ever come across Fourier decomposition? :-) I think I'd expect standing waves in 1D to be more or less sinusoidal, but I'm pretty sure you could generate other shapes of wave given an appropriate driving function. Obviously there's room for some error caused by friction and fluid viscosity and stuff. I managed to avoid having to study fluid dynamics as part of my engineering degree, though...

Now lynches are mandatory, which means that 3v3 goes from automatic scum victory to ~66% chance of scum victory (good, but not great).

Aha! Thanks :-)
