Dominion General Discussion / Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2012
« on: January 13, 2012, 04:05:14 pm »
This topic was split from the Greatest Isotropic Moments of 2011 thread

Sadly this was on the 9th... But I can't resist, so here's a challenge to beat for next year ^_^

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20120109-082209-c5d53456.html

#1 Biderman: 317 points (227 ▼, 7 Colonies, 5 Nobles, a Province, and 4 Estates); 24 turns
          opening: Wharf / nothing
#2 mayasquer: 49 points (3 Provinces, a Colony, 2 Duchies, 3 Nobles, 5 Estates, and 4 ▼); 25 turns

If not the most points, I'm willing to bet I got the most points in one turn.... 30 buys, 6 Goons in play, I buy 4 Colonies, 1 Provence, 1 Estate, and 18 Coppers for a total of 180+40+6+1=227 points in one turn. The sad thing about this turn is that I had $54 and there were 5 Colonies left :/

Very cool cards! I think Ravage is indeed too strong at 4, but wasn't the point of it to have a second 4 cost attack?

Love Argent. Perfect.

Emporium could be reworded as:

Look at the top 2 cards of your deck. You may place one of them on your Emporium mat. Discard the rest.

I'm sorry that I had some nice luck and you accidentally activated cities for me, shortening the game significantly.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How would you play this kingdom?

You know, if you're actually *curious* rather than argumentative, you could do that yourself, since both Dominiate and Geronimoo's simulator are just a click away.

But fine, whatever. Big Money Basic takes an average of 26 turns to get to all 8 provinces, Smithy Big Money takes an average of 24 turns, rounding to the nearest turn and using the Ultimate Simulation option on Geronimoo's simulator.

I am sorry. I was on my iPod, which does not allow me to run the sim.

I just tried it on Dominiate. Out of 100 tries, with no opponent, BigSmithy never got to 8 provinces before turn 20. In 66 of the 100 runs, it took 23 or more turns to get to 8 provinces.

I stand by the numbers I'd estimated before.

100 games is far too small a sample size. I regularly run 10,000 gam sims and see win-rate fluctuate as much as 3-5%. With 1000 game samples the interval is around 8-10%.

Run 100,000 games and I'll believe you

The number I remember for BMU goldfishing from sims is 24 turns. BMU smithy should be faster. I can run it tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure it's not *that* close. If the numbers you have are right, I would agree. But I think they are two high

Smith BMU. Not even up for debate

Ah, for some reason I thought you added the words"at random" before "reveals"... That would actually be a stronger Jester.

As is, its an interesting idea, though it might be a little too strong at 4, but it's not bad.

I fear Ravage is now more powerful than Jester, and cheaper.

What if it was simply: Each opponent trashes a card from there hand and gains a card costing the same of your choice.

I like Black Night, but I would reword it as: "When you trash this"

Why did he buy one fairground? he could have crushed you with more of them.
Yes. Skimming this log I completely :facepalmed: about your opponent's play. He could have pulverized you into dust by getting more Fairgrounds. And he's accumulating 25 Coppers to go with his one Counting House???? AUGH.

After this game ended, I looked at his deck and was like WTF? Why did I not lose this game by a million points...

Maybe I should have named this thread "WTF was the opp doing instead of winning?" :O

For most of this game I was certain I was lost, but decided to stick with it like a good sport. Then about 10 turns before it ended, I decided to count my VPs and was amazed to see I owned all the provences... Then I was like "#$%^! I can win this game!"

It's because your opponent wasn't helping you with emptying out the Provinces. That tends to prolong the game a fair bit.

Not that much surely?

EDIT: Also, any idea what the heck he was doing?

This was just hell to play. 41 turns and almost 3 hours. Props to anyone who bothers to read even half the log. I still don't understand why the game developed as it did, but it felt like Militia kept keeping me off of 8... I went through after and found atleast 4 times.

Every now and then I have a game where enemy attacks seem to always hit at the perfect time, and my attacks seem to hit at the worst times.

I had the opposite happen yesterday... I hit literally every gold he bought all game with Pirate Ship.

Ravage seems strange to me. It basically will mill out the Estate pile? I can't see it having any other effect, besides trading coppers for curses if the opp is unlucky. I can't imagine that any 2 cost is worse than having an estate.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How do You Play Golem?
« on: October 22, 2011, 03:57:11 pm »
I'm sorry, I have horrendous spelling :(

Thanks for the analysis of Golems with Wharfs and Golems with Apprentice. The basic picture I'm getting is that Golem would be so much better if it cost 5 instead of 4p? What would convince you to buy Golem?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards That Combo With Tunnel Reaction
« on: October 22, 2011, 03:46:26 pm »
Actually, immediately after writing this, I got devastated by someone going minion/tunnel.

This sounds like the best stratagy to me, as Minion allows for a very fast reshuffle rate to take advantage of the Golds, as well as a high likelyhood of being able to discard tunnels. Golem would be completely evil in a deck with only Tunnel, money, and VPs...

Dominion General Discussion / Re: How do You Play Golem?

I don't see why it wouldn't be... I mean, It can draw you 8 cards, or find you an Apprentice right?

I'll admit I'm really a novice at this game. Why is buying more Warfs better? Golem let me consistantly hit 2 Warfs a turn.

I'll amend my original post

Def: What do you mean about hitting a Golem after reshuffling? Drawing it off of the Warfs? It could happen, but it only did occur a few times. I may have drawn a golem once or twice off a warf, but never in multiples

What do you guys think about the card Golem? It screams interesting to me, but I am unsure how to play it well. I have had a variety of ideas, but I would like to get others' input. Right now, the strategies that seem good to me are:

Good Golem Strategies
  • Golem + Counting House + 8 Coppers
  • Golem + Apprentice
  • Golem + 2 Wharf

--------------------

Original post:

Golem is a very interesting card, but it seems not at all clear to me how to play it well. Do you buy one Golem or many? Fill your deck with actions or just have a few? Recently, I played a game where I used Golem in Big Money. My deck consisted of cash, 2 Wharfs, and 4 Golems. I found that the increased odds of hitting Wharf every other turn was very helpful, as was the milling of my deck. Obviously Golem is insane with Apprentice, but when else does it shine? What if I replaced my two Warfs with a Tactician and a Monument?

Here is another game I played with Golem.

The one game where I was sure I played Golem well was easy.... my deck was 8 coppers, 1 potion, 4 Golem, and 1 Counting House plus victory cards, and I just bought a Provence every turn from turn 8 onwards.

Is Golem good? How do you play it?

Game Reports / Re: Ambassador Hell
« on: October 21, 2011, 12:23:03 pm »
http://councilroom.com/openings?card=Ambassador

Ambassador/Ambassador ranks third highest on the cards to pair with ambassador in the opening, behind only tourney and caravan. Now this doesn't mean it's always the right move to open double ambassador, but I would argue the opposite of what you said. It usually IS a great move.

That's interesting, and (now that I tan the math), I see that Ambassador/Ambassador is actually a lot stronger than I had thought.

OP: I retract my statement about opening Ambassador/Ambassador, although I would still recommend you glance at my game, as I feel I played it rather well, even if I did not have two :D

I wrote some buggy code to parse traders, and now the games from the 13th and 14th are up.

So... my rank updated, but my games aren't posted on my page... what's up?

Opening with 2 Ambassadors is not usually a great move. On this board I would have likely opened Ambassador/Fishing Village. My initial strategy would be to Ambassador away my Estates and Coppers a quickly as possible, unless I could buy a Silver, Fishing Village, or Gold only if I do not. See here for an example. I should have started buying provinces a little earlier, but my first half dozen turns are more or less optimal.
