Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dutch Nocturne is here.
« on: October 31, 2018, 07:47:03 am »
I'll see what I can do. Will probably meet up with the aforementioned friend next Wednesday, and then I can ask him whether he plans on buying Dutch Nocturne. If so, we'll move from there.

Any update on this? So far I've tried different boards but no luck yet.

Just had
Lurker + Mining Village (Lurker becomes Silver, Mining Village can be played more than once if you have enough draw)
and
Lurker + Apprentice
on the same board.

Sure, Lurker works well with most trash-for-benefit but I found that these work especially well because 1: they give +1 (or more) action so you can play Lurker after playing them and 2: the benefit improves your current buy phase. These three were also the best option for draw/actions/coin for an engine on said board.

I vaguely recall there being a page on the Dominion wiki containing a huge table with rows being cards and columns being languages, containing all card names and translations (where known/applicable). Does anyone know where it went?

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: All Renaissance names revealed

In theory they could also be gotten by no card at all if the take-this-Artifact trigger were on the Artifact itself (e.g. something like, when you have 12 or more Coins, take this).
But I guess that anything beyond one Artifact, one card would be too complex for this intentionally simple expansion.

Assuming all Artifacts belong to a Renaissance kingdom card (and not a Project or are cardless), the possibilities for Horn and Lantern are:
Border Guard, Cargo Ship, Hideout, Improve, Inventor, Lackeys, Old Witch, Patron, Research, Scepter, Spices.

My best guess under these assumptions would be Border Guard for Horn, Hideout for Lantern.

Lackey sounds akin to Minion.

Looking forward to German translation here, as Minion has already been translated as "Lakai".

Same in Dutch. Steward has become 'Lakei'.

As it happens, I've been teaching a lot of new people Dominion in the past week or four. A deck-and-discard mat would actually help a lot, given how easy people find it to get the discard pile confused with in-play. And you have to wait until someone plays a gainer then draw which triggers a reshuffle before it's even apparent to them why it can matter.

I use pencils for that (although any kind of stick-like objects or small, long objects that can be used as dividers could work).
And one horizontal pencil to separate this-turn-discards from future-turn-discards also seems to help a lot. People tend to put Durations and other Actions in the same row, in the same orientation, and end up cleaning them up in the same turn or forgetting whether they played them this turn or in a previous one.

Have you ever thought about doing non-functional promos instead of kingdom cards/events? I mean stuff that has no impact on the game but is cool to have or look at, like a trash mat with different art or special coins or something.

85
I mean the kind of cards you immediately think about when talking about cards that change the rules or exotic cards, like Prince, Black Market, Villa, Outpost, Band of Misfits, Necromancer, Inheritance, Possession, or whatever other cards you can think of that fit this vague, poorly defined criterion.

Which interesting interactions can you find with the new Renaissance cards, artifacts, and projects?

For example, Necromancer and Acting Troupe means you'll never run out of Villagers. If you Prince a Mountain Village you start every turn with every Mountain Village in your discard pile. Possession lets you get rid of every Villager and Coffer someone has.

86
I'm also wondering whether there will be negative artifacts.

Library, Ruined Library and Archive all let you draw cards.

Border Guard sounds like some sort of reaction to attacks.

Could also be a deck inspector and/or a from-deck trasher.

89
I now want a Communism promo.

I like how, based on previous cards, we can already get a general idea of what stuff will do. Improve looks like a Remodel variant, Inventor may be a gainer or Lab variant, Old Witch probably distributes curses, Research may be Lab-like, one of Horn or Lantern could be a deck inspector.

I can also predict an Age of Empires II joke in the meme thread, and maybe an 'unbridled Capitalism' joke.

I'm probably not going to buy it myself - I just don't like it enough, honestly, and I prefer to wait for Renaissance which seems a LOT better at first glance - but a friend of mine is probably going to buy it.

Is there anything specific you have in mind for the Wiki? Just Dutch card names or something else?

At the bottom of each wiki page there is a table called 'other language versions'. For each Nocturne card, a new row with the Dutch name has to be added.

If neither of you is comfortable with the wiki code or has time to edit the wiki I would also appreciate just a list of all the card names so I can add them myself. A picture of the strip that goes between the cards would also suffice.

Secondly, when there's a new expansion I always compare every Dutch card to every original English card to check if there are any translation errors. If there are any, I make a scan of them and modify this page: http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Translation_errors_on_the_Dutch_cards_-_Vertaalfouten_op_de_Nederlandse_kaarten . I then send a mail to the customer service of 999 games to inform them of said errors.

I think the least amount of work for you would be to just take pictures or make scans of the rulebook, as the rulebook contains pictures of the cards as well, which are the same pictures they use for the cards. Although the resolution has to be good enough to be able to read the text on the pictures of the cards in the rulebooks.

Was Nocturne designed especially with full random in mind?  To me it's felt like, these are some of my favorite mechanics but it gets a bit overwhelming when you're playing with lots of Nocturne cards.  It solves the issue that Dark Ages and Prosperity have of having a really fun mechanic that only 3 cards use, so I can see that being a consideration.  But I know you've said you mostly play with two or so expansions at a time.
Yes I playtest mostly with two expansions at once - 5 cards from the new set, 5 from a single older set. So, no, it was not designed for full random specifically.

This is actually how I usually randomize my kingdoms - only cards from two large expansions, or two large and one small (and sometimes some promos). I find that cards within a single expansion tend to interact better, and some sets interact better with specific other sets (like Dark Ages + Alchemy, Properity + Guilds).

What are your thoughts on people playing Dominion in Tabletop Simulator without having bought a physical copy of Dominion or a Dominion Online subscription?

With Pixie + Tracker it was pretty neat to open with three Pixies. Pouch needs to line up properly though.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Anticipating Renaissance
« on: October 10, 2018, 12:14:44 pm »
If I expect a Remodel variant, a card that protects against (some) Attacks, a Cursing Attack, a Silver gainer, a Peddler variant, an alt-VP card, another card with +2 Actions, another card that's very similar to an existing card, a card that almost everyone thinks is the biggest dud in the expansion, and a card that will get at least three times as much attention on this forum as all the other Renaissance cards, I'm probably going to get some right. I know DXV said in the teaser there's no Victory cards but I think there might be at least one as Project/Artifact.

Also, there's probably going to be some more interactions between Coffers/Villagers/Projects/Artifacts, aside from just Swashbuckler.

Dominion Articles / Re: Draw-to-X engines
« on: October 10, 2018, 11:39:46 am »
I think it would be worth it to include a list of draw-to-x cards, since really only 4 cards say "draw until you have x cards in your hand" (and Jack isn't that great of an engine card). I mean, at this point we all probably know, but for newer players it's good to mention that Minion, Menagerie, and Scholar are lumped in with the other cards.

Menagerie, Minion, Tactician, Library, Watchtower, Jack of all Trades, Guide, Cursed Village, Scholar. Did I miss any?

Tactician doesn't work more than once each turn and double Tactician is its own strategy altogether.
Jack of all Trades is hard to make work because it only gives you five cards and it gives you a Silver on each play.
Guide doesn't work, as you can only play it at the start of your turn, before any actions. Although it synergizes well with start-of-turn trashers (but how many of those are there? Amulet... Ratcatcher... Transmogrify not so much... Prince...)

I think based on the way the article is written, we're effectively really only talking about Library, Watchtower, and Cursed Village. You mentioned the issues with Tac, Jack and Guide, but Menagerie is not at all Draw to X (although some of the same principles apply), and the discarding with Scholar and Minion are large enough wrinkles that they'd need their own subsection.

I think they're used in the same 'type' of engines we're talking about though: get as many buys, virtual coin, and actions as possible while decreasing your handsize as much as possible, then use your draw card, repeat.

Menagerie is a bit different, yes. You usually need more specific enablers, especially good trashing or consistent discarding as it suffers much more from Coppers/Estate. Plus 'decrease your handsize' becomes 'remove doubles from your hand'.

Minion and Scholar on the other hand - I think they might in general be better for this type of engine as they suffer less from stop cards. Intuitively Festival-Scholar sounds like a better engine than Festival-Library. With Library, you only get one new card for every Festival/Library you had, but with Scholar you always get 7. The main drawback is that you don't want more than one Scholar in your hand at a time.

See https://www.999games.nl/dominion-nocturne-kaartspel.html

If anyone will get it please post here. I already have it in English, but there is a bit of work to be done on the wiki now that it's here, and I don't want to spend 40 euros on something I already have to do that.

Actually I think Trader holds up its own in terms of getting Silvers. The only games where I've seen the Silvers run out is with Masterpiece and Trader. The trick is to get a lot of Silver early from Estates/other Traders, then get $5-costs/Golds/Provinces with those Silvers, then turn those into Silvers. Plus trashing with Trader doesn't take up your buy.

What's your main misgiving about working with big data from the online implementation?
When did you stop beating your wife? I don't have misgivings about working with data from the online implementation.

You just don't seem to do it despite having plenty of good opportunities and reasons to do so.

What data are you referring to even? And heh, isn't those tasks something for, you know, the forum dedicated to the game rather than the creator himself? If we found something worth noting he will notice, but otherwise digging through those kind of things isn't something I would want DXV doing if he isn't enjoying it for some reason. He has more important tasks to do. Like, you know, creating more cards and games..

Or spending time with his family.

Two of the things I noticed was how low Raider is listed (I've always thought it very nasty) and that SCOUT ISN'T THE LAST CARD!!!!!

How exactly is Transmute under scout?

People voted it worse.

Without implying anything - what reasons could people have to think of it as worse?
