When playing Dominion yesterday evening, we noticed a mistranslation that's not yet found on the Wiki, namely Orchard. Dutch Orchard forgets to mention that only Action cards count; it omits the word 'Action' ('Actie').

Thanks, I'll add that to the Wiki.

EDIT: Now I'm wondering whether Overlord is wrong. 'This is that card until it leaves play.' has become 'De Despoot blijft de gekozen kaart zolang hij in het spel is.' And Beggar...

EDIT2: I'm doing a full check-up now and Smugglers is actually wrong. English Smugglers uses 'That the played to your right gained...', Dutch Smugglers uses 'gained or bought'. Using the latter, a player can buy, say, a Village, reveal Trader, and gain a Silver instead. Dutch Smugglers lets you gain Village or Silver, while English Smuggler only lets you gain the Silver.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why Peasant Will Be On My Ban List
« on: November 13, 2018, 07:17:14 am »
The beauty of having a ban list - or playing irl where everyone has it - is that there can be cool fun cards like Peasant and King's Court and people who hate them don't have to play with them.

It also means you can take a break from those cards, then realize you miss them, and enjoy them again.

I haven't missed Possession yet.

Yup, every time I try Possession again there is not a single other player who enjoys it.
In fact, the only ragequits I've ever seen in Dominion are Possession-related.

Throne Room + Guide as village. Not sure what the draw was.

So, since there are and were so many mistranslated cards in Dutch, let's have a discussion on how much better (or worse) the mistranslations make them.

I'll list them here:

-Bandit: each other player must trash ALL revealed Treasures other than Copper, instead of just one.
-Tribute: the revealed cards aren't discarded.
-Pirate Ship: the player who plays the Pirate Ship also reveals the top two cards of his OWN deck, trashes a revealed treasure, et cetera.
-Young Witch: when played, revealing a bane is MANDATORY for other players, if possible.
-Madman: returning it to the Madman pile is optional.
-Urchin: gives +1 Card, +1 Buy, instead of +1 Card, +1 Action.
-Rogue: like Pirate Ship, also attacks the player who played it.
-Stonemason: when overpaying, the cards you gain can be ANY card, not just Action cards.
-Plan: trashing is now linked to playing the Plan'd cards instead of buying them.
-Gladiator: the +$1 is replaced with +$2.
-Triumphal Arch: when it's a tie, instead of counting either, you count the sum of both.

Madman can be used as a Necropolis until you 'spring' it, so that's interesting.
Urchin can't be chained, so becomes a lot worse.
Pirate Ship is the most interesting of the lot. Now you can use it as a slightly more risky Lookout, or Miser.

In Donald's defense, becoming pissed does not usually solve a whole lot.
Also, screaming in public at people you have to work with isn't so great.

We aren't looking to sell anything to anyone who doesn't want it. If the cards are no good for you, don't buy them, problem solved. You don't get to stop us from providing them to people who do want them; you just get to be mad at the fun they're having. If you bought the set because you weren't warned, well again that's not my department, I just get to suck up that hate, but you could try returning it as defective.

Here are images of new cards next to old ones; this doesn't include pure Actions which are also lighter.

Wow, that's a lot more difference than I was expecting from what I read from the reactions.
But oh well, I probably won't get it until either I find those Europpean boxes or when 999 Games releases it, which usually takes a full year.

With how many players do you usually play?
In 2-player games I usually ban Peasant because you almost always won't be able to win without it and must style your deck around the line.
In 3- and 4-player games it's a different case. The game ends more quickly so you may not be able to get enough benefit out of token'd cards before the game ends to be worth the build-up. I remember a 4-player game where I tried to reach Teacher as fast as I could, but the game ended the turn after I placed a token.

What a bummer... I live in Norway, and even though the product description says that it ships to Norway, it changes at check-out. Now it says that it doesn’t.  :'(
There is a source of English copies in Europe. I don't know where it is but I would check around.

I would appreciate that a lot. I haven't been able to find it so far.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Engine Building Help
« on: November 08, 2018, 10:44:32 am »
Also check whether building an engine is the right move. On some boards I've made the right call by playing a simple single-card big money strategy and just outspeeding the engines. Vault, Courtyard, and Gear are especially great at this (although they're good in engines as well, except Courtyard). Also check whether three-piling is possible (Stonemason, Lurker, for example). I know a player in real life who ALWAYS builds the engine if possible, and it doesn't always work (Throne Room + Guide as only village, really?).

What Aleimon Thimble said, check if those are present. How good are they at what they do? If you can't get more than one Province each turn an engine may not be the right move (it was here, there are +buys, attacks, plenty of draw and a good village).

I also just uploaded it to BoardGameGeek.

Miser, Farmer's Market, Tormentor especially benefit from removing the action requirement.
Vassal and Conclave let you play any actions in your buy phase.
And finally some love for Dame Sylvia.

But Minion becomes crazy. Instead of using Minions or other actions for coin you can just play all your non-Minion treasures, play Minion, get new non-Minion treasures and maybe another Minion, et cetera.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Renaissance rulebook is up

The biggest surprise for me is Cathedral.

I'm so pleased. Been waiting so long for that name to show up and was heartbroken when the only card to beat chapel in trashing-crazyness was named Donate. Now everything is good with the world again.

When it comes to names I'm a bit annoyed with Piazza, I associate the name with discard for coffers or at least something with +buy. This feels more like a Herald/throne room thing. Ah, well, that is details. At least it's probably not at risk at be confused with Plaza being a sideway card.

I can't not read Piazza as pizza.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Interview with Donald X.

Do you sleeve your own Dominion? Is there playtesting with sleeved cards? Do you use the original boxes or do you have a storage solution?

Donald doesn't play with the actual cards.

He plays with his prototype, which are sleeved Magic: The Gathering cards.

He uses plastic binders as his storage solution.

Ah. Do sleeved cards actually fit in binders? I'm using Ultra Pro Collector's Albums and put 10 or 12 cards in each pocket. I'm thinking about sleeving (due to Coppers and Estates now having visibly different backs) but I'm not sure if it will fit (in terms of thickness).
Also, which size of sleeves do you need for Dominion cards?

Puzzles and Challenges / Third-order interaction. Fourth-order interaction?
« on: November 05, 2018, 07:23:23 am »
So I use this weird naming scheme where first-order interaction pertains to cards which cause player interaction on their own (Attacks, stuff like Council Room), second-order interaction pertains to cards which aren't interaction cards on their own, but become them when certain cards are in the kingdom (for example, Rocks can be second-order interaction when Swindler or trashing attacks are in the kingdom), and third-order interaction cards are cards that are NOT first- or second-order, but become interaction cards when certain second-order interactions are in the game with the first-order interactions that make them second-order interactions. For example, Militia is first-order interaction, Caravan Guard is second-order interaction when Militia is on the board, Royal Carriage and Coin of the Realm are third-order interaction when Militia and Caravan Guard are on the board (because when someone plays Militia, you can play Caravan Guard from your hand, and call Royal Carriage/Coin of the Realm).

Some cards have multiple orders (Duchess is first-order by playing it, second-order when someone else gives you a Duchy through Swindler or Ambassador).

Now here are the puzzles:
-Find a loop where a card can keep getting in a higher-order of interaction (or show it's impossible).
-Find a fourth-order interaction card that isn't first- to third-order interaction (or show it's impossible).
-Find the highest possible amount of orders a card has without looping (using the same triggers when climbing orders, e.g. playing Possession in a Possession turn).
-The above challenges without using Attacks (or show it's impossible).
-The above challenges without using Possession (or show it's impossible).
-The above challenges without using Possession and Attacks (or show it's impossible).

Now I haven't given a clear definition for interaction cards. I can't give you a definition, but I can give you lots of examples (not exhaustive):
-Events: Raid, Tax.
-Landmarks: any Landmark where you put VP tokens on piles in the set-up. Mountain Pass.
-Projects: Road Network.
-Cards that use Boons/Hexes, as using Boons/Hexes changes what Boons/Hexes other players will get.
-Cards that care about emptying piles like City, Poacher, Tower.
-Trade Route, Embargo.
-All Attacks.
-All cards that directly influence other player's 'game state'.

Not interaction:
-The usual emptying of piles. Emptying of Split piles/Knights/Ruins.
-Obelisk, as it only changes the property of a card.
-Lighthouse (doesn't trigger).

You can only get to another order of interaction through 'triggering events'. When an [X]-order interaction card triggers something else (before having completely resolved it, but cards that say 'after' also count), then that something else is an [X+1]-order interaction card. Like in the aforementioned example, playing Caravan Guard 'triggers' calling Royal Carriage.

[Xth]-order interaction cards played during a Possession turn become [X+1th]-order interaction cards.

If you're not sure about a triggering event or whether something is first-order interaction, use your intuition.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Renaissance rulebook is up

http://riograndegames.com/Game/1334-Dominion-Renaissance , click on 'Download Game Assets' in the top right.

I'm sad there's not that much first-order non-attack interaction and no alt-VP but overall it looks great, with a lot of thinking man's cards and emergent complexity. I'm getting a Dark Agy (Age-y?) feel with it. Patron may pose problems for non-English versions, though.

68
Well since someone will do it eventually, here are all the cards that can reveal Patron (tell me if I miss any).

Removed (4): Scout, Spy, Thief, Saboteur
Dominion (1): Bandit
Intrigue (4): Shanty Town, Wishing Well, Courtier, Patrol
Seaside (2): Ambassador, Cutpurse
Alchemy (3): Apothecary, Scrying Pool, Golem
Prosperity (2): Loan, Rabble
Cornucopia (5): Fortune Teller, Menagerie, Farming Village, Harvest, Hunting Party
Hinterlands (4): Crossroads, Oracle, Noble Brigand, Inn
Dark Ages (11): Poor House, Vagrant, Sage, Ironmonger, Wandering Minstrel, Knights, Mystic, Pillage, Rebuild, Rogue, Madman
Guilds (5): Doctor, Advisor, Taxman, Herald, Journeyman
Adventures (2): Magpie, Giant
Empires (6): City Quarter, Royal Blacksmith, Patrician, Chariot Race, Gladiator, Grand Castle
Nocturne (6): Raider, Will-o'-Wisp, Ghost, Bad Omens, Famine, War
Renaissance (4): Border Guard, Seer, Villain, Piazza
Total: 59 cards

You forgot Tribute and Envoy.

Dutch Cutpurse and Taxman don't contain 'toon' or 'tonen'. I haven't checked Nocturne because I only have it in English. I can imagine other non-English translations may have similar problems.

Rules Questions / Re: Disciple on Band of Misfits
« on: November 04, 2018, 07:45:35 am »
Shouldn't BoM just say "Choose a card from the supply costing less than this. Play that card", then? That seems more intuitive.

Playing that card would put it into play, effectively making it your card (you'd discard it at end of turn). So you'd have to at minimum say, "Play that card without putting it into play".

Or play that card, then return it to Supply.  Would have cases where it's not the same (Trashing it, say).
I tried having it gain the card. It just empties piles so fast. Multiple versions tried this though.

I tried having it gain a card, then return that card to the supply. People just endlessly forgot to return the card. Maybe something could have reminded them well enough; I did not have the technology at the time.

I tried having it play a card without moving it. For all of your Band of Misfits solutions, consider duration cards and Feast. Here I was not satisfied with how the weird cases resolved.

I tried a choose one - Band of Misfits where the cards costing less than it are always Woodcutter, Throne Room, Peddler. It's not much like Band of Misfits. But you know. It's a thing you can try and I tried it. This was known as the Morphling solution, after the origin story behind that Magic card (they wanted to reprint Clone but were told the rules were too complex).

And I tried just not having Band of Misfits. That didn't work either. I gave it a good long try though.

In the end there it is. As the saying goes, we hope you enjoy this expanding world of Dominion.

Have you tried making it usable with reserve cards for the second edition?

How did the recurring card 'themes' find their place into the game (verbs for Remodel variants, magic for Cursing, religious stuff for some Trashing, storage for sifters, village-related things for +2 actions, et cetera)?
Did you already ensure to keep this consistent when you first started? Did it 'just happen'? Did you discover you were doing it and wanted to keep it consistent in later cards?

71
I'm pretty sure we're talking about English copies here, which seem to be printed by Altenburger
Correct.

999 Games does make the Dutch version of Dominion; I don't know if they will do this expansion at all, or when they might do it, or who would print it for them. That's all utterly unrelated to the fact that some European company is distributing English copies of Renaissance.

Yes, I'm talking about English copies.
In my experience, 999 Games usually publishes the Dutch version about a year after the original has released.

Black Markets are sort of spooky. You could make the Black Market deck consist of only Haunted Castle to avoid having to use a lot of non-spooky Castles. Could also throw Sir Michael in there, it has pretty fitting art.

The baby on Duchess gives me nightmares.

Procession? Don't you mean Possession?

Defiled Shrine maybe?

Here is the latest news from Jay, crossposted from the discord.

- the rulebook will go up sometime on Monday
- with Jay shipping on Monday, conceivably someone will have it Tuesday, certainly some people will have it Wednesday, but there's no guarantee any particular store will have it then, it's all down to how far the distributor is and how quickly they spring into action
- there will be some copies in English in Europe at the same time; I don't know how you get those but they will be there, lurking
- Jay said ShuffleIT could put the online version up Monday; Stef will pick a time and announce it in his forums

Heavy breathing.

EDIT: There won't happen to be any at Spellenspektakel 2018?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Het Koninkrijk Dominion
« on: November 03, 2018, 09:26:15 am »
Yup, they have this in my local boardgame store. As said, it's an introductory Dominion product with a sample of pre-existing kingdom cards. The main problem with this product is that if you've bought this and you buy a new product you're gonna get duplicate kingdom cards until you no longer need this product. (hence I don't have it.)

If I recall correctly it contains no Curses and only enough Estates/Coppers for everyone's starting hands. No kingdom Coppers/Curses/Estates. I'm not sure though so it would be nice if someone confirmed.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dutch Nocturne is here.
« on: November 01, 2018, 02:00:23 pm »
I'll see what I can do. Will probably meet up with the aforementioned friend next Wednesday, and then I can ask him whether he plans on buying Dutch Nocturne. If so, we'll move from there.

Any update on this? So far I've tried different boards but no luck yet.

Sadly, no update on this. We've kinda been preoccupied with Great Western Trail, board game-wise.

Honestly I'm not going to buy Nocturne just so the Wiki can be updated, so as long as my friend doesn't buy it there's not a whole lot I can provide...

Agreed. I got the English version already - 40 euros to update the wiki is too much.

I've contacted the publisher but they don't want to provide a rulebook file because they 'don't want people to buy foreign language versions'. I've cast a couple of lines on other boards but nothing yet.

Next week it's in stock at my local boardgame store so I'm gonna ask them if they can help as well.
