It requires none of your time when not playing

I am doing something terribly wrong, it seems.

Indeed, I have almost 100 days worth of forum activity that disagrees with that statement.

Plus devising storage solutions and writing Java code to make a kingdom generator. Actually, of all my boardgames, Dominion has taken up the most of my boardgame-related non-playing time.

In general, do Alchemy last.

Whether you want Hinterlands or Intrigue depends on what cards you like. Intrigue has multi-type cards and strongs attacks. Hinterlands has more reactions and 'when-you-gain' cards.

There's probably a better way to do "get a benefit based on how good the deck of the player to your left is". Or a better way to do extra turns.

And they're known as Smugglers and Outpost, respectively.

Yes, that's the joke.

It's not fun to see your good turn pass by and another player getting all the rewards.
Plus Possession takes pretty long (although its price mitigates this).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Replacing Dominion cards
« on: December 05, 2018, 07:20:04 am »
Hello, hello

I have a few cards that have been damaged or lost.  I would like to replace them without buying a whole new set.  Where can I obtain these replacement cards?

Thanks
-doowopdj

You will have to contact your publisher for this. I.e. if you live in America, Rio Grande Games, 999 Games for the Netherlands, et cetera.

Hunting Party can find Gold in Tunnels!

Cellars lead to Gold in Tunnels as well!

Some attacks make you flee into a tunnel, and then you accidentally find Gold!

In one topic you mention the 6 cards that would be replaced if Seaside got upgraded. Have you made lists like that for other expansions?
No. Well, there's a post from a few years back where I go over things I'd change about expansions, but it didn't specifically consider the update pack scenario, and so was card changes that I can't actually make. When doing the new cards for the main set and Intrigue, it was a question, what about Seaside, and I thought a little about what I'd do. Prosperity could also improve, but Seaside needed it more and couldn't get it, so I didn't worry about Prosperity.

Alchemy just wouldn't be worth the effort; I could spend months getting a nice large set out of it - changing too much to have an update pack - that some people beg for but which many would automatically have no interest in. It is trivial to find a better project than this.

For Hinterlands the changes I want are trouble, they mostly involve making cards slightly worse, and I can't just make the simplified/weaker versions because the update pack that would have to exist would be a truly awful product. I don't want to replace the cards with new ones but that's the best I could do.

And then, Mixed Box and Dark Ages don't have so much to fix. Well overpay is too wordy of a mechanic but uh replacing it completely doesn't sound like a good project when whatever it was could go into a new expansion instead.

One thing I didn't consider at the time that might have been possible is a mixed update pack - seven new cards that were spread around between expansions. I haven't put in any work there either, I just see now that it might have been an option.

I'd buy that mixed update pack in a heartbeat (and I also hope that it would include a list of cards you would remove, had these new cards been released as part of 2nd edition versions of their respective expansions).

Me too.

3P has a lot of potential for political playing, but the bigger issue in this example is that Sauna/Avanto is cancer.

I always wondered why split piles aren't 6/6. Port can be 12. Rats can be 20.

I prefer the 'fixed cards' approach, like Bandit for Noble Brigand for Thief, Miser for Pirate Ship, Messenger for Woodcutter/Chancellor, Hireling for Alchemist. Maybe Exorcist for Transmute? Basically, new cards in expansions that have the same flavour as older, 'bad' cards, but are more fun and balanced.

I like the Pearl Diver bottom-of-deck mechanic, but the card by itself is just an almost-never-buy for me. It could be great on something else.

I've had a lot of games where noone would buy the one very strong attack card, until the first person did it.

Probably because people dislike being constantly attacked by strong attacks.
You provided an irrational reason. In the case of junkers, the rational reason for buying a junkers once the opponent did it has something to do with the distribution of the junk pool. The strength of junkers always depends on whether somebody else has it.

It's not within game-theoretic rationality, no. It functions more like mass cooperation in a prisoner's dilemma. Noone attacks and noone gets curses. Everyone attacks and everyone gets curses.

Dominion General Discussion / Bad news for Dutch Dominion owners.
« on: November 24, 2018, 03:33:07 pm »
I just got a mail from 999 Games (the Dutch publisher), stating that they will not print new errata cards for anything except second edition base. If you have cards that DO have fixed versions, I advise you to contact them as soon as possible to ensure they haven't run out. Post-Guilds expansions will not get errata cards whatsoever. (Unless they suddenly change their minds.)

If you're Dutch and interested, here is the relevant part of the actual mail (if you want a translation send it through Google translate, I'm too lazy):

What I did when trying to pick which expansions I wanted next was to look at the list of cards on the wiki (http://wiki.dominionstrategy.com/index.php/Main_Page).

Dominion FAQ / Re: Cards from Dominion and Intrigue 1st edition
« on: November 21, 2018, 03:35:57 pm »
I have the 2nd edition of both the base game and Intrigue. I understand that each of these have about 6 cards that were not in the 1st editions.  Is there anyway to purchase the original 6 cards in each set without having to purchase the entire 1st edition?

Thanks
I just bought a 1st edition of Base and Intrigue on ebay. They were around the cost of an expansion, and having the extra base cards nice.

That being said, the removed cards kinda suck so no reason to get them outside of collectorism.

But that probably goes for a lot of people. Especially amongst us here.

I've got them in my pure Norwegian set, but probably just because 2nd edition isn't released in Norwegian.

I'm glad I have them, though, being a notorious completist...

Formula Dé HHHNNNNGGG

Doesn't have to be something supplied with the game. Drinks coasters, standard playing cards, empty card sleeves...

But I've just had an even simpler idea that might help a lot: play with your deck reversed. i.e. the "top" of your deck is the bottom, and the "bottom" is the top. That means you can see the back of the last card in your deck, not the one you're about to draw, which isn't perfect but is a big improvement.

True. I just tried sleeved blank cards for this and it works well enough, so I'm going with that (plus they fit nicely, and are noticably (noticeably?) different from the other non-sleeved cards).

I can always tell which cards are from the new expansion. They're the ones in the untarnished sleeves.

But, honestly, I think there are more important things to worry about, like talking to the people you're playing with and having a good time.

Our boardgaming group doesn't small-talk during games. Only before and after. No drinks, no food, full attention to the game being played, everything said is about the game itself. That's how we all enjoy playing the most. Come to think of it, it's very similar to the people I do LAN parties with, even though it's completely different people. But everyone should play as they like, I won't tell you to do the same.

45
I solve all this using the house rule 'don't look at the back of the top card of your deck'. Takes some practice but it works. Alternatively I could devise some sort of object that obscures your deck.

Setup: Each player puts their Uncertainty Token on their deck.

Actually, you gave me an idea, thanks.
I could use Stash, the blank cards, or the randomizers for this, in a fashion similar to Knights/Ruins. Always keep that card on top after shuffling and between reveals/draws. Then, when you look at your deck, you don't get information (even accidentally). So when you play, say, a Doctor, instead of looking at your deck and noticing a back with lots of wear (which usually is a Copper), you'll see a blank card or such.

46
At the risk of getting shouted down, I don't agree with those who say the printer errors are irrelevant.  The backs are clearly lighter...I can pick out the Renaissance cards from their backs 100 out of 100 times.  That's the biggest problem.  The too-light orange on the duration cards is very close to the original yellow of treasure cards also.  That's a much smaller problem but still a distraction.
I don't agree with them being irrelevant either. I played with them at a release event last week (with an older version of Base Cards) and they are for sure 100% marked. They are so marked that you don't need to compare two cards, just looking at one is enough. The fronts being off sucks, guy who needs me to repeat that, but I know would not affect gameplay for me personally; the prototype already has had different printers so that e.g. the orange isn't always the same orange. We had the lighter Treasures and regular Treasures and I mean it didn't bother me but also I'm used to it.

As with Adventures I think, why do I even bother. You spend months working on something and then it's worthless. It looks like the basic premise of printing cards at two different times that get shuffled together is bad.

I'm not about to buy 4,000 sleeves and my group is making it work.
I don't understand this part, I think it's vice versa. If you don't sleeve, lack of wear on the cards will mark the new cards anyway; the backs mark them, the lack of wear also marks them. If you sleeve, only the backs being different marks them. Well, if cards stay in sleeves long enough, lack of sleeve wear also marks cards; I see this with the prototype.

Any solution for people who will wait for a new printing is probably a few years away, since lots of copies were printed. But also, there's no perfect solution, because the most recent sets are all lighter than the oldest sets. At best we match the most recent sets and you can still tell 1E cards from the backs.

Jay is looking into what's going on, and so far it looks like the file isn't wrong - he sent me the "good to print" file that Altenburger sends us and uses if we okay it, and the pixels I checked matched the other files I have. So, whether it was the printer printing too light, printing too dark previously, or using the wrong file, it seems like it has to be the printer. Obv. since the layout on the fronts was wrong, I was very suspicious of the file.

Magic Maze solves this by having the expansion tiles have different backs altogether.

Although yes, I have noticed the English Nocturne I bought in America has slightly lighter backs than all my other cards.

I solve all this using the house rule 'don't look at the back of the top card of your deck'. Takes some practice but it works. Alternatively I could devise some sort of object that obscures your deck.

Rules Questions / Re: Is '$3, $4, $5 or $6' the same as '$3 to $6'?
« on: November 17, 2018, 09:12:47 am »
Well, those are all the integer price points from $3 to $6, and we don't have fractions of coins.

But can '$3 to $6' include debt and/or potion costs?

48
Thanks, I'll add that to the Wiki.

I thought werothegreat ran the wiki all on his own.

I've been doing the Dutch translation error page and adding Dutch names from new expansions since after Guilds released in the Netherlands (and whoever did it before me stopped).

I'm checking the Dutch cards for mistranslations and I see quite some cards (Graverobber, Giant, Knights) where '$3 to $6' has been translated as '$3, $4, $5 or $6'. Are they the same? Are there cases where it matters?

Indeed, at the moment Cathedral is the only Project with a downside to it. My point was that one could nerf Project effects with an end-of-game penalty, if one would want to nerf them. At the moment, the exploration space of Projects is large enough that you can do without this complexity. But the discussion was over the reason why there are no $2 projects. The reason was that they would be as pointless as the decision whether to use Basilica. But cheap projects are conceivable if there is another downside to them.

*cue naming all the edge cases where some of the non-optional projects hurt you*
Although Canal definitely hurts your trash-for-benefits.
