Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Most points in 1 buy
« on: February 05, 2013, 08:59:34 am »

I submit all of these as my answer!

One of them must fit the criteria!

The last soultion has 10 Goons in play and buys a Colony, so that's 20 points.

Some rules clarification:

When I buy a Gardens in turn 3 and a Colony in turn 4 which is my 20th card, is the Colony worth 10 or 11?
If 11: If I have multiple buys in turn 4 and have bought a Gardens in my deck, can I first buy a Copper as my 19th card and then a Colony as my 20th card?

11, and yes. I don't get all the confusion about the puzzle... we've had almost the same puzzle before, the only difference is that here you are limited to 4 turns. The question is simply, "what is the most number of points that a single buy can increase your total VP by?" So if you have 8 Gardens and 8 Fairgrounds, and you buy a Colony which is your 10th unique card and your 30th card overall, then that buy was worth 10 + 8 + 16 = 34.

Without the turn limitation, the answer is huge, because you can buy a Colony with 8 Hagglers in play, then gain a Border Village, thus gaining 8 Gardens which could each be worth over 20 points.

I'm really confused here, and am not sure why it isn't 6

With only 1 buy, are you really going to be able to do better than buy a Duchy?

Otherwise, you could open IW (or Wksp, Armory)/- and gain a tunnel, but that's not better.

Count can gain a Duchy, but that isn't better.

The way I read it, he's talking about what's the most points that 1 buy can earn you... not that you can only buy 1 thing the whole game. So you build up your deck however you want for 4 turns, but by the end of that 4th turn you want to have made a single buy that adds a lot of points to your deck.

I don't need to see the Ruins pile, I just need to know if it's empty. If I want to look at it it's not hard, but it would be nice to show how many empty piles there are on the first page somewhere. That would do most of the time, and I can always check if I care, just how many are left or what's on top.

I don't see a great solution for Young Witch. For sure I want that 11th card on page one. You could move Curses to page two (again with an empty pile count somewhere) and put Young Witch or the Bane where the Curses were, although that would look weird. Young Witch could have the Bane under it, both without art in the space of one normal card. There's no room to the right if you have Platinum and Potion, and shrinking all of the normal cards isn't great.

I just don't even get why it's a question of "which 10 cards can we fit on the first page"? Why not simply put more cards on the first page? Someone here posted a screenshot he'd made in photoshop of a layout of the screen that had 3 rows of cards instead of 2... and it looked just fine. It even fit within the tiny screensize requirements that they were going for. Once again, speaking as a programmer, I can't quite understand the mindset that would lead to the decision to only put 10 of the 11 Kingdom cards where you can see them right away. It really isn't that hard to redesign it (or to have designed it in the first place!) to fit all the cards.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Playing Sea Hag when the Curses are gone
« on: February 04, 2013, 03:51:35 pm »
Somebody should mention that if your opponent has a horse traders or tunnel in their deck, you really shouldn't play a dead sea hag.

Go ahead and take that last bit out of context.

Well, except if you're leading and there's only one gold left with 2 piles empty.

The opponent isn't forced to reveal his Tunnel to gain a Gold, though. Or did I misunderstand what you meant?

It's a 3 player game; the opponent who has the Tunnel has no chance to win anyway, and he likes you more than the 3rd player.

I would personally much rather have all the cards in alphabetical order than separated by set. However, I realize that many other people would rather have it separated by set; so I'm not sure of a good way to please everyone there...

Crossposted from here:

Man I'm already annoyed that things like Ruins are on a second page. Spoils, Prizes, Mercenary, and Madman I get, because they aren't in the supply, you can't buy them, and the pile being empty doesn't matter for game-end. But anything that you can actually buy, like Ruins, should most certainly be on the same page! And to hear that when Young Witch is out; only 10 of the 11 Kingdom cards are on the first page... that's just pure awfulness; that's a design and layout that flat-out doesn't work.

I was first board on my high school chess team; and we got second in the regional tournament... so I used to be pretty good. I've only played about 10 games total since high school, though...

I thought the criteria was "If you have only 1 buy and unlimited money, what is a card that you would never buy, assuming another certain card is on the board."  As in, what cards have a card that is strictly superior at all times.  City is not always superior, Trusty Stead can't be bought.

I agree, which is why neither of those were on the list. But isn't that basically what an honorable mention is? Something that doesn't fit the list, but would if the criteria were loosened slightly. In this case, Shanty Town would fit if the criteria were loosened to "Kingdom cards whose effects are strictly inferior to the effects of some other card."

I mean, the criteria of this puzzle is a little subjective, which is why Hamlet and Oasis have * next to them. You could also argue that Courtyard fits the list. I was only planning on including Kingdom Cards, though.
I don't see how Courtyard fits.

Because of Smithy, or any +3 cards card. After you draw 3 cards, it's generally considered a drawback of the card that you have to put one back on top of your deck. Enough of a drawback that it's a $2 card instead of a $4 card. But I only listed it as honorable mention because there are times that you'd rather put a card back.
Right. I have, for some reason, always thought the topdecking part of Courtyard is the thing and that the +3 cards is just a bonus to make up for the loss of two cards and one action.

That's actually a neat way of looking at it. Now that I think about it, Embassy might be considered a better comparison than Smithy... both net you +1 card... Courtyard gets you the best 6 out of 7; Embassy the best 6 out of 9. But Embassy is non-Terminal; and doesn't give you the possibly beneficial top-decking.

Embassy is terminal.

I have no idea what I was thinking.

Shanty Town?

I'd give an honorable mention for that one... for 2 separate reasons, in fact.

Ok, now even I am lost.  Why is that an honorable mention?

Trusty Steed and City?

But you can't buy the first, and the second isn't always as so.  Unless, we have different definitions of why they're the same...

Yes, DGHunter said what I was thinking. I don't think Shanty Town fits the list, but it can be called an honorable mention because of those 2 cards.

I never heard of whole numbers not including negatives.

This has got to be a regional thing. I have never heard anyone include negative numbers in the whole numbers.

Interesting... I had no idea there was not a global consensus on this... I've always learned that whole numbers were all non-negative integers (0 and up), and natural numbers were all positive integers (1 and up).

Ruins ? (except Survivors, maybe)
Those could all work, but I was only thinking of Kingdom cards. Good catch, though!

All the base cards except Potion, Platinum and Colony ? (not sure about Curse)
See above.
All 0-4$ Action cards as honorable mentions
Not quite sure what you were thinking with this one...
Worker's Village ? Young witch/Witch/Followers ? Contraband ?
I don't think any of these qualify...

You're trying to do that thing where you never reshuffle the whole game using mandarin and inn and probably hamlet.

Well yeah but I wouldn't count puzzles.... if you did, you could take any situation in the world and say that it's the right move so long as you're doing a puzzle that requires you to do that move.

Nah, I think the reaction part of that completely disqualifies it, same with Moat and Secret Chamber.

The reason I missed most of the cards I did was because I thought about something like Wishing Well and thought "that does something no other card does, it makes you wish for a card (and does other stuff Mystic doesn't do). I just didn't realize that whether you win the wish or not, Wishing Well is still nothing that Lab isn't.

Er, GendoIkari, if all of the other piles were KC-Embargoed, you'd probably buy out the curses as that would take the least time. If you have the money to buy out the tributes really fast, why are you worried about the golden deck catching up?

You are only winning by 1 point. You can't afford to take any Curses. And you have a couple Quarries in play; you can't afford to buy out any Victory pile.

Oh, definitely Vagrant.

ARG!!! You keep finding cards I didn't think of.

And now all the sudden I thought of YET ANOTHER card I missed.... so the 2 I have that haven't been named yet:

Mystic and Conspirator (both for the same reason, in fact!)

Good luck, edgecasers!

You needed to empty a third pile to end the game with a lead. Opponent had previously used KC-Embargo to embargo every pile except Tribute.
