Savoyard
$3 - Treasure
Worth $1
---
When this is in play, it is worth an additional $1 for each other Savoyard you have in play.

So... like Bank, but it only considers other copies of itself, instead of all Treasure. The strange thing is that while Bank is a $7 card, this is actually really really weak; if you line up three of them, then they're still only as good as the three Silvers you could have bought instead. Compared to Fool's Gold, this is dead in the water. And honestly I think Fool's Gold already has this design space pretty well covered. Although, if you made the vanilla bonus $2 and bumped the cost to $5, I might start thinking about it more seriously...

So if you get 6 of these in play, it's identical to playing 6 Fool's Golds. After that, it becomes better than Fool's Gold... 7 of these is $3 more than 7 Fool's Golds. All 10 is worth $55, whereas all 10 Fool's Golds is "only" worth $37.

And of course Fool's Gold has the benefits of having the Reaction, the ability to work with Counterfeit, and the cost of only $2 instead of $3.

Why not say

Quote
+$1

You may reveal...

and drop the "including this" clause.

Yes, this is how it should be worded. That being said.... the effect is generally worse than Secret Chamber. The 2 vp that goes with it boosts it a bit... but probably shouldn't be more than $3.

Having only done a quick search through the thread, it doesn't appear as if there's an official answer as to whether or not Pixar movies count.

If they do: Can't decide between Up, Toy Story 3, and Aladdin.

If they don't: You should be able to figure this out based on my previous answer.

Hint? Answer?

Does your note also include geography? Or could the location/position of the states still matter?

Game Reports / Re: Grand Market + Quarry with terrible luck

Why not Trader a Worker's Village turn 10 instead of a Copper?

My general plan was to have very little treasure, and just play lots of Grand Markets. Of course Silvers would have helped me to actually buy GMs to begin with, but it would have made it harder to play multiple GMs per turn.

I'm really not sure why I bought a Trader at all though... that was probably a mistake.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130226-182753-c1123388.html

I have 3 Quarries by turn 5. My opponent only grabs 1. We both trash a Quarry to Mint-buy and replace it soon after. Neither of us can ever afford a Grand Market buy until he finally does turn 14. I can't ever buy a Grand Market until turn 18! By which time I've Smuggled 2 of them with my Smugglers from the Black Market.

Anyway, he ends up winning the Grand Market split 7-3... but with my 4 Quarries I'm able to buy just enough to sneak out a 3-pile win.

I think you instead want something like:

----

Trash a card from your hand. Discard a card.

If you did trash a card and discard a card, do this twice: gain an Action card from the Supply and play it. At the beginning of your cleanup phase, return any cards thus gained to the Supply.

----

This still has some weird interactions, though. (like, I *think* that with Trader, you'd just get two Silvers, and you would indeed get to keep them.)

You can get rid of "Gain" all together. Simply "play an Action card from the Supply. At the beginning of your cleanup phase, return this card to the supply."

As RTT pointed out, Spice Trader does a similar thing

Spice Trader
Action-Reaction $4

You may trash a treasure from your hand. If you do, +2 cards +1 action and gain a number of Silvers equal to its cost in coins.
---------
When you would gain a card, you may reveal this. If you do, gain a Silver instead.

I think this card is too powerful.  It is actually stronger than Laboratory but it only costs $4.

How is it stronger than Lab?  Well, it allows you to remove Copper from your deck AND junk up the player on your left.  Sometimes this will be a disadvantage (possibly after all the Copper is gone), but usually it will be good for you.  By the time it becomes a drawback, you should be able to work around it easily -- have a treasureless deck, or buy/gain extra Copper to fuel SoM.

Hm, actually, I can see how the drawback could actually hurt.  If a treasureless deck isn't possible, it would usually be pretty difficult to keep getting enough Copper to fuel multiple SoM plays every turn.  However, you could just buy a single SoM as a very powerful non-terminal deck-thinner, so it is still too strong.

Mechanically speaking, "give a treasure" is ambiguous.  Does the player "gain" the treasure, or is it like Masquerade?  Does the teasure go into their hand, or their discard, or somewhere else?

I definitely agree that this is often more powerful than a lab. However, it doesn't make any sense to buy Coppers to fuel SoM... the turn that you play this, if you actually do give a Copper, then you haven't just played a lab... you've played a cantrip with extra cycling. Your handsize will NOT increase. So it's only advantageous if you're using it to thin out your deck, or to hurt the other player. Buying Coppers just to allow you to play SoM more means that playing SoM doesn't improve your deck OR your turn.

*Edit* RTT actually makes a good point, and similar to what I was saying... this is more like Spice Merchant than Lab.

When I think of a card that's never good in an opening, Harvest immediately comes to mind. Although I suppose even if you're likely to only get 1 or 2 Coins out of it, the cycling helps early-game.

Opening Harvest seems really similar to opening Navigator... except slightly worse in the opening (unless you're playing with Shelters!)

I think that the biggest obstacle to modifying CC's solution to empty the supply on turn 3 in a six player game would be fitting Masquerade into the kingdom.  I imagine it should be doable though.  At worst, you could take Goons out and lose out on 1000 points or so, unless those +buys were crucial.

Dominion Puzzles: the only place where you'll here the phrase "At worst, you lose out on 1000 points or so."

I think we should assume solitaire, because otherwise there's crazy masq./noblebrigand/ambassador/embassy stuff. Of course, that makes envoy and contraband a bit better...
The question is, can you empty the supply on turn 3 in multiplayer. Six players, you go last, they all open Masq / something and draw both on turn 3, passing down the somethings to you. Your buys are of course still in your deck. So they pass you Procession Procession Procession Fortress Watchtower or some such and well, I'm not figuring that out.

Too bad you limited it to 6 players. I can empty the supply on turn 2 with enough players!

Game Reports / Re: KC-KC-Remake-Remake... Fortress
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:44:01 pm »
But in a Duchy/Duke race, after that initial plunge getting a single Remake/Fortress is another 2 Duchies/Dukes.

Don't you need 2 Fortresses and a Remake to get 2 Duchies? I thought the ruling was that you select all cards for trashing then trash them and resolve the effects. Or is Remake considered 2 separate trashing events because of the "do this twice" line?

Already been answered, but just to back it up, Remake definitely lets you trash the same Fortress twice. If it instead said "trash 2 cards from your hand" it probably wouldn't. But the wording on Remake is identical to:

Trash a card from your hand...
Trash a card from your hand...

Hey, it's been confirmed that I'm not the oldest member here.

But, still, get off my lawn.

(I do still have my VHS of Monty Python's Flying Circus because I can't bear to throw all that away)
I have my Atari connected to my flatscreen TV.  I never realized how big those pixels were...

Just hooked up my NES a couple weeks ago. Turns out the Light Gun won't work on newer TV's.  :(

They don't work on many newer TVs due to latency issues, but you can still get high performance new TVs with low latency (they are usually aimed at gaming). The problem is many TVs build in some latency to work with their sound syncing systems now (the ones that don't will usually have syncopation issues between the audio and visual engines that come and go, or get worse).

I think the really low latency ones still work with the light gun. The timing is pretty precise though.

EDIT: Can't you just point it at a bare light bulb? IIRC that works. I mean, it's not fun, but you can play forever.

Duck Hunt has built-in measures to prevent the light bulb method from working. The light needs to be on for one specific frame, and needs to be off the next.

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:34:04 pm »
Come to think of it, why can you reveal a Moat multiple times when an opponents plays an Attack card, but you can't reveal a Tunnel multiple times when you discard it?   I mean, it's again clear that it would be a bad idea to allow this, but this seems to be the only Reaction card to date that would have a practical effect being revealed endlessly without having some sort of clause preventing it from being revealed multiple times.

You may reveal Moat multiple times from your hand because there is no way to verify that you aren't revealing multiple different Moats from your hand, short of revealing your hand to the opponent.  It's idempotent, so revealing multiples doesn't matter anyway.

Tunnel says that you may reveal it when you discard it.  You only discard it once, so you only have one chance at revealing it.

Now, maybe you want to go through that whole thing -- I discard a bunch of cards, now I go back and dig out one Tunnel, reveal, gain a Gold, and I go back and dig out a second Tunnel... except maybe I cheat and reveal the first one again... OK, so verification can be difficult with Tunnel since a bunch might be discarded at once.

But practically and intuitively, you just reveal them AS you discard, revealing multiples if you have multiples.  It is natural that you can't reveal the same one twice since you only discard it once.

Donald clarified this somewhere else... I'm pretty sure he basically said that one of them (revealing from hand or revealing from the discard) was an exception to the general "revealing" rule.

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:47:43 pm »
Yeah, it's not so bad with Tunnel, since everyone knows what is clearly intended.

Imagine a hypothetical card as follows

Quote
Prospector
$3 Action-Reaction

(...)
---
When you shuffle this into your deck, you may reveal it.  If you do, then reveal the top card of your deck.  If the revealed card is a Treasure, gain a Gold.  If the revealed card is a Curse, trash this Prospector.

For this card, you clearly need to shuffle before checking the top card.  But if the top card is indeed a Curse, how do you find the Prospector from inside your deck?

I think you basically just can't ever do that card. You can do "when you would shuffle this into your deck, reveal it" instead, but then you would need complex wording if you really wanted to reveal the top card of your deck AFTER the shuffle.

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:52:49 pm »
Yeah, I agree. But note that this can put you in the odd situation of having to reveal a card that you may have actually lost track of (because it's been covered up in the discard pile).

How could that happen? You reveal Tunnel when you discard it; presumably, that means you are holding it and putting it in your discard pile, and as you do that you reveal it.

Quote from: Tunnel
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may reveal it. If you do, gain a Gold.

Quote from: Tunnel (alternate)
2 VP
----------
When you discard this other than during a Clean-up phase, you may gain a Gold.

How are these different?

The difference is that cards that are discarded are hidden to the other players. Without the "reveal" part, there would be no way for all the other players to know that you discarded a Tunnel.

Rules Questions / Re: Thief can trash Spoils, but not gain it - right?
« on: February 28, 2013, 01:33:22 pm »
You discard cards one at a time.

Not true.

You're right, you do discard simultaneously. But there's 2 big reason why Tunnel doesn't lose track. First of all, lose track ONLY applies to the ability to move a card somewhere else. If you need to look at a card to figure out the cost, or types, or anything like that, lose track simply doesn't apply there. It only matters if you are attempting to move the card.

Second of all, I'm pretty sure no card can lose track of itself... it only applies when card A tries to move card B after something else (either card B or C) has moved it.
