Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Redemption expansion cards - updated
« on: March 07, 2013, 03:05:23 pm »
Guys, I don't think anyone's going to convince him to change it at this point. Not unless they've got a less confusing way to do the exact same thing.
Challenge accepted.

Inventor2
$6 - Action
Play this as if it were an Action card in the Supply other than Inventor2 that you choose. This is that card until it leaves play except it gains "If you have no more than 1 card with this ability in play, trash a card from your hand, discard a card, and gain an Inventor2 and play it. At the beginning of your Clean-up, return this card to the supply."

Not quite exactly the same but I tried. I don't like the card nonetheless.

Inventor
$6 - Action
+1 Action
Trash a card.  Discard a card.  When you do, put 2 Action cards from any supply pile into your hand.  During the clean-up phase, return both cards to supply, even if the card was a Duration or was trashed.  Inventor can be played only once per turn.
------------
While this card is in play, you may ignore the "lose track" rule, and any other rules or card effects that would contradict this card. During the clean-up phase, you may look through your or your opponents' draw decks and discard piles, as well as opponents' hands, in order to return the gained action cards to the supply.

Quote from: Isotropic FAQ
Can I have the source? I just want to run a server for my friends.

No.
  • It would violate the spirit of my agreement with Donald X. that let me run the server in the first place.
  • The Dominion content (card text, etc.) isn't mine to give away.
  • The current source code contains cards from the unreleased Guilds expansion.

I hadn't seen this little FAQ, until now.  So, I'll just have to enlist a minion to write the same code over again?  What a stupid waste of time.  The wheel was built, put it on a torrent for crying out loud.

To avoid violating the ethical agreement, there's no need to provide Dominion card content, just the bare bones and an interface to add cards.  The user can invent a game, copy a game with some effort or whatever.

plank

Once you have your minion do it all, let us all know wont you...

Psh, his Minion is just going to give him the new online Dominion, while the rest of us will just have to discard our hands and draw 4 cards.

Here's an idea for Ale House: Make an opponent decide where to put both cards.

Not bad, but probably leads to a bit too much AP and slowness.

elHalcyon and LastFootnote (and a number of others as well), thank you for your detailed comments. I never expected such time from others, and I really appreciate it.

I've again updated many of the cards due to the suggestions made here. There are still one or two that I've kept pretty much the same (namely Inventor). While I get the concerns, we've just had way too much fun with it and found it to be a lot less complicated in real-play. And that's what it's really all about, right?

Besides my own family and friends, none of these cards mean much to anyone or ever will, but that's okay, because we love the game, love the expansions, and love using these cards--especially with many of the clarifying comments and edits, thanks to all of you!

I truly am honored that you took the time.

Nothing at all wrong with a card that may "break" a bunch of Dominion rules and conventions if it's just for you to have fun with at home. :) I really do want to know though, what do you do currently at home if you play Inventor and then play something like Minion or Celler that causes you to discard the temporary cards you gained? Especially if you reshuffle in the middle of your turn. At the end of the turn, do you just dig through your deck to find the cards you need to put back?

Ale House
$5 - Action
Discard a Treasure card (or reveal a hand with no Treasures).
+4 Cards
+1 Action
Put 2 cards from your hand on the bottom of your deck in any order.

I'd test it with discarding the two cards rather than putting them on the bottom of your deck. The fact that this leaves you with the same hand size if you had any Treasures in hand means that it's not strictly better than Laborartory or Stables. The discarding is faster than putting cards back into your deck and the card could probably use the power boost. If it's too powerful, go back to putting the cards on the bottom of your deck.

I'm confused by this... isn't putting it on the bottom of your deck more powerful than discarding them on average? Putting them on the bottom of the deck means that you'll see them sooner. It's basically equivalent to a Stash-like ability that says you put them on the top of your deck when you shuffle.

It depends on which two cards we're talking about. If it's two Victory cards, you'd rather discard them. If it's two useful cards, you'd rather put them back. Which one is better depends on your deck composition. I believe that discarding the cards would make Alehouse more powerful on average. Also, the decision of what to discard is much easier than the decision of what to put back, making the card resolve faster.

Oh duh. For some reason I was automatically only thinking of discarding good cards.

Also, you have a typo in your Cudgel rewording:

Each other player draws a card, then chooses one: he discards 2 cards; or he gains a Curse; or he trashes a Treasure from his hand that is not a Copper (or reveals a hand with no Coppers).

It's not about revealing no Coppers, it's revealing no other treasures. Probably (or reveals a hand with no such cards)?

Cant remember if I have asked this before...

Roughly how many physical copies of your games do you think you have sold ?
It seems like this is the kind of thing you have to ask the companies. I don't know how public they want it to be. At one point Jay said in public that more than a million copies of Dominion had sold (counting all languages and expansions). So, more than a million.

I'm sure you don't want to get too much into the business side of things, but do you directly make money off of more people buying sets? Like does a percentage of the sales go to you, or did Rio Grande just pay an overall license fee and keeps the actual profits?

whereas a Pixar movie like Cars may not be thoughtprovoking or inspiring or emotional it's at least good for a few laughs.

At the very least the whole scene where she explains how the highway came through and ruined the town that depended on the small road traffic was thought-provoking and inspiring and emotional. I absolutely loved that about Cars, especially given the fact that they were dealing with an actual historical reality in America.

Cars was my favorite Pixar before I saw Up.

brave sucked, I was disgusted that it won best animated from the oscars
Might I ask where it lacked for you? It was Pixar's first fairy tale. I don't know how much better they could have done with it.

I was very disappointed with Brave. It's easy for me to say that it's the worst Pixar movie (have seen all except Cars 2). That's not to say it's a terrible movie. The worst Pixar movie isn't saying much... it's still just fine. It's just that the story was so uninspiring and cliche'd. Person is transformed into animal because of someone's selfishness, animal bonds with person again, fixes the spell. It just felt so much like any other basic Disney animated movie. Like you point out, it's a fairy tale. And I've come to expect much more out of Pixar than just a fairy tale.

That said, I loved the Scottish music and scenery.

huh?

I've played 2 games against lespeutere this morning, first one he won after starting Vault/Chapel on a Tunnel board. Second one I won (forgot the board).

Ah. It didn't help that I misread "I've beaten the #1" as "I've been the #1".

Wohohoho, I've beaten the #1 on the leaderboard.  This first game doesn't count, opening 5/2 on Vault/Chapel/Tunnel is cheating...

huh?

I maintain that in the original song, "doorstep" does not rhyme with "step." :P And I just can't think of anything for it... :-[

No, but "doorstep" DOES rhyme with "more step", fortunately.  ;D

That's funny... maybe it's just the way he emphasizes the syllables, but I never even realized that he was rhyming "doorstep" with "more step". It always just sounded like a bad attempt to rhyme "doorstep" with "step."

Bad news on the forum - I couldn't read one more post

This line should rhyme. "I couldn't read one mor'f'em?"  :-\ Maybe you'd have to rhyme with something other than forum.

Did you play in veto mode, or in just text; no images to load?
Now the chance has gone away...

With apologies to Don McClean.

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that website used to make me smile
And, if I had a minute to kill, I could go there for a thrill and...
Maybe I'd be happy for a while
But, Goko made me shiver with every bug report I'd deliver
Bad news on the forum - I couldn't read one more post
I can't remember if I cried when I read that Doug Z had complied
Something touched me deep inside the day Dominion died

So, bye bye Isotropic, goodbye
We would pay just to play but we can't so we cry
Them forum boys are wishing it were a lie, singing...
This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Thanks for everything, Doug!

*Also please note I intend this to be an homage to Isotropic, not a complaint about Goko.

Yeah, I've been trying to get 3 stars on the very first level of the very first campaign... even with all 8 Provinces and a few Duchies; only 2 stars.

And just now finished it with all the Provinces, all the Duchies, and a total of 10 Estates. Still 2 stars. So yeah, it's impossible.

Savoyard
$3 - Treasure
Worth $1
---
When this is in play, it is worth an additional $1 for each other Savoyard you have in play.

So... like Bank, but it only considers other copies of itself, instead of all Treasure. The strange thing is that while Bank is a $7 card, this is actually really really weak; if you line up three of them, then they're still only as good as the three Silvers you could have bought instead. Compared to Fool's Gold, this is dead in the water. And honestly I think Fool's Gold already has this design space pretty well covered. Although, if you made the vanilla bonus $2 and bumped the cost to $5, I might start thinking about it more seriously...

So if you get 6 of these in play, it's identical to playing 6 Fool's Golds. After that, it becomes better than Fool's Gold... 7 of these is $3 more than 7 Fool's Golds. All 10 is worth $55, whereas all 10 Fool's Golds is "only" worth $37.

And of course Fool's Gold has the benefits of having the Reaction, the ability to work with Counterfeit, and the cost of only $2 instead of $3.

+$1

and drop the "including this" clause.

Yes, this is how it should be worded. That being said.... the effect is generally worse than Secret Chamber. The 2 vp that goes with it boosts it a bit... but probably shouldn't be more than $3.

Having only done a quick search through the thread, it doesn't appear as if there's an official answer as to whether or not Pixar movies count.

If they do: Can't decide between Up, Toy Story 3, and Aladdin.

If they don't: You should be able to figure this out based on my previous answer.

Hint? Answer?

Does your note also include geography? Or could the location/position of the states still matter?

Why not Trader a Worker's Village turn 10 instead of a Copper?

My general plan was to have very little treasure, and just play lots of Grand Markets. Of course Silvers would have helped me to actually buy GMs to begin with, but it would have made it harder to play multiple GMs per turn.

I'm really not sure why I bought a Trader at all though... that was probably a mistake.

http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20130226-182753-c1123388.html

I have 3 Quarries by turn 5. My opponent only grabs 1. We both trash a Quarry to Mint-buy and replace it soon after. Neither of us can ever afford a Grand Market buy until he finally does turn 14. I can't ever buy a Grand Market until turn 18! By which time I've Smuggled 2 of them with my Smugglers from the Black Market.

Anyway, he ends up winning the Grand Market split 7-3... but with my 4 Quarries I'm able to buy just enough to sneak out a 3-pile win.

I think you instead want something like:

----

Trash a card from your hand. Discard a card.

If you did trash a card and discard a card, do this twice: gain an Action card from the Supply and play it. At the beginning of your cleanup phase, return any cards thus gained to the Supply.

----

This still has some weird interactions, though. (like, I *think* that with Trader, you'd just get two Silvers, and you would indeed get to keep them.)

You can get rid of "Gain" all together. Simply "play an Action card from the Supply. At the beginning of your cleanup phase, return this card to the supply."
