Dominion General Discussion / Re: WW's Power Rankings
« on: July 24, 2013, 04:49:40 pm »
I think if I were to rank the cards, it would simply be based on this one question:

We're playing a Dominion variant (one that's been somewhat discussed around here before), in which we "draft" cards that we are going to use.. that is, only the player who drafted that Kingdom card ever gets to buy or gain it.

Smugglers comes in last in this ranking, I take it?

lol, good point. There would be cases where it would skew traditional ratings. But for the most part, ranking does come down to "I hope my opponent doesn't get this card, because if he ignores it I have a better chance at winning."

Yikes. In a draft, I guess I'd pick chapel first, and if the other guy picked chapel I'd probably go masquerade. Then again, maybe both of us could lose to a Rebuild guy. That's an interesting way to think about things.
Although, I do think it skews things somewhat. A board of guaranteed power cards really benefits King's Court, which more than anything else seems to get stronger the more power cards are present on the board.
So actually, I guess the guy who picked King's Court would be in best shape. Even if his opponent gets some absurdly strong cards, just a couple of the top 20-top 10 in a kingdom with King's Court probably makes all the difference.
Goons is even more frightening than usual. Because only one person can go for it, the other player must find some way to severely impair the opponent via strong attacks or win the game before the Goons guy gets a lead. Once the Goons player is, say, 100 points up, there's nothing the other guy can do to catch up. Maybe Monument or Bishop, but those aren't as fast.
I actually think cursing is less intimidating here. The opponent can strike back with either Masquerade or Ambassador, both of which counter curses quite neatly.
Any other thoughts? Frankly, I suspect that some sort of nightmarish combo would emerge in a format like this.

I didn't mean for this to create "power boards".. because you would keep drafting until ALL cards have been drafted. So you wouldn't be picking Kingdoms out of your top 10... you'd be picking Kingdoms out your top 205. (Well 5 of the cards from your top 102, 5 of them from your opponent's top 103).

You get to go first... what card do you draft? There's your number 1. Now pretend that your number 1 is already taken... so what card do you draft? There's your number 2. And so on.

And so that this doesn't depend on the Kingdom at all, we're talking about drafting from all the cards, not just for 1 game. Then you play a bunch of games where 5 of the Kingdom cards are randomly picked from your draft, the other 5 are randomly picked from your opponent's draft. Dunno how to handle Young Witch.

This one actually sounds like good advice. Or at least, either way could be good in the right situation.

Dominion Articles / Re: Combo: Hermit/Madman + Market Square
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:49:57 pm »
I did this in real life once... 3 player game. I didn't really know what I was doing, I had read through some of this thread but didn't remember all the details.

Anyway, I pulled the trigger with 4 or 5 Madmen in my deck. It was delayed a few turns because of a discard attack that kept starting me with 3-card turns. Anyway, after I played 2 Madmen and a couple other things I had my whole deck, including lots of Market Squares. This is when I realized... I didn't have a single Squire left, nor any other card that could trash cards. So yeah.... :-[

Tried it again with my remaining Madmen, this time it worked pretty well, though by this time I wasn't sure that I would win if I bought out the remaining Provinces, I hadn't been tracking well and one of the other players had been buying up a bunch of Duchies to go with the Provinces. So I bought all but 1 Province and a bunch of Duchies instead. Game ended a couple turns later; I had a pretty big lead; could have won by ending it before.

Sounds possibly really strong. Play 2 from your deck is kinda like +2 cards +2 actions. Of course the actions and cards are both weaker than normal. But I would probably remove the choice part of it, just give it some other vanilla bonus. Probably make it nonterminal too, because I like the strategy of Golem where you don't know if it will be your last action or not.

But that's just me.

I don't think this is a very strong $4. It might be weaker than Smithy sometimes. You get a +1 buy in exchange for your opponent getting some say over what cards your draw.

Also, you don't want to use the word "gain" here. It should say "Put the rest in your hand."

Thanks for the fast answers.

I'll show them this thread, hopefully they will belief you guys.

In case they are bad at english:

Also nix mit "unendliche Schleifen".

Hope i was helpful.

Just for fun, I dropped this into Google Translate.  The results were less than impressive.  We still have quite a way to go on the Universal Translator front.

Just for fun, I dropped Google Translate's version into Google Translate to go back to German. Then back to English, then back to German, then back to English.

Quote
"Store Cards" always means that it maps directly to the discard pile. The cards will be created when it when cards are dealt explicitly set by the deck on the card (eg a library) or. Normally, however, is also on cards, where to go for it, and if it is "store", they go exactly how else directly into your discard pile.

There are no restrictions for mixing, except that you can only mix when you need it. The discard pile must always mixed when cards removed from the deck, view, or stored shall be revealed, and there is no cover.

Example: A player begins his train with 5 cards in hand, a cellar. His deck contains only one card. He plays the basement and the other 4 sets of cards in his hand (he has no place on the hand because the game before him) He 3 sets. Three directly to the discard pile Then it must follow three cards so that he at first a shot and then shuffles his discard pile, he must draw cards and no longer in the deck. After mixing, it sets the discard pile ready as a new deck and still attracts the remaining two cards of this new deck. It is possible that it previously stored just as it draws one or even two of the cards. This is by no means excluded from the rules.

This is nonsense anyway with the loops. These are impossible in Dominion, since the latest when someone all of his action cards have been played or has no actions can not be played. As long as the basement is played correctly, it interprets go playing out in front of you at last to play the cards.

PS: There are quite sentences in which it is possible to draw all players their cards on the same hand. This is especially likely in sets of disposal which can be very small quantity, or make combinations such as village / advice, this is completely legal and even then the end is reached at the latest, when all the cards before they are played. So nothing to do with "infinite loop".

7291
I would have liked an "overpay on play", something like :

Guild's village
+1 card
+1 coin token
You may spend any number of coin tokens. For each coin token spend this way, +1 action

(and you can put the coin token on the card to remember how many actions you have)

I mean, Butcher has this mechanic. I wouldn't call it "overpay" at all; simply an alternative use for coin tokens. But I'd agree that more uses for coin tokens may have been nice. On the other hand, simply thinking of coin tokens as "just extra money that's saved up" is nice also.

7292
Well it's not really possible for real-life play, but it would have been nice if overpaying for a card actually made the card better in your deck.

Also, here's some pre-Guilds discussion on what people were hoping for: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=7565.0

As I mention in the OP, I would have liked more cards that are more powerful, but limited by a once-per-turn mechanic like Crossroads.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Negative Cost?
« on: July 09, 2013, 11:51:04 am »
If you trash it with Apprentice, you would have to discard 2 cards.

This isn't how +cards works. If you're ruling this, then implicity I'd say that I should be allowed to discard -3 cards with Cellar (and thus draw 3 cards) and then draw -3 cards, discarding 3. Well... maybe that's not entirely accurate, but drawing and discarding are not opposites.

Someone should make a card that works that way actually.+1 action, Discard -3 cards, then draw -3 cards. Might need to cost $3 though.

7294
Man, you can give people some awful reshuffles with Possession, regardless of what's on the board, as long as there's some draw of some sort.

In most situations the worst you could really do is play Smithy while having some good cards in hand, which the person may have played anyway if they preferred getting a good hand now to a better reshuffle. In order to really hurt them, you'd need something that basically lets you draw your deck, then discard some bad cards, then cause a reshuffle.

7295
Possession only interacts with the guy to your left so that's why it's not an attack.

I disagree with this. Possession isn't an attack because the majority of the time, it has no negative impact on the player to your left. The normal effect for him is replacing his current 5-card hand with whatever 5-card hand he would have had next, which is about the same as Tribute; has equal chance of hurting and helping. Of course there's plenty of edge cases dealing mostly with Governor, Ambassador, Treasury, Alchemist, etc, but the usual use of Possession doesn't hurt your opponent.

Likewise for Masquerade, where both players pass their worst cards around.

Somewhat. I think it's generally a lot easier to hurt someone with Masq than it is with Possession. With Possession, you can only hurt them if comboing with other specific cards. Masq can be used to hurt an opponent no matter what else is in the Kingdom. Not sure if Donald himself ever said this or not, but I think it's pretty likely that Masquerade would be an attack if not for the possible Moat confusion.

6. It doesn't show how much money you got in hand.
When playing engines you often end with many cards in your hand but it's not displayed how much your money cards are worth. It's a waste of time that you have to count them on your own.
It's almost like you're playing with real cards! Oh no!   ::)
Wouldn't it be cool if you had to shuffle your deck manually, with a mouse gesture or some button smashing or something?

Hopefully they'll eventually update it with the following features to make it feel more like real-life play:

1. You can only play against opponents who are in the same room as you.

2. When starting a game, you must wait 5 minutes to simulate each pile of cards being found from the collection of cards you own, and put out to be available this game. Of course, if you play multiple games in a row, subsequent games will only take 3 minutes instead of 5 because the basic supply cards will already be out.

3. At the end of a game, before starting a new game, you must wait a few minutes to simulate cards being put away.

4. There should be no text log whatsoever, but your opponent should be expected to use the chat window to explain what he's doing as he does it.

5. At the end of a game, it won't display who is the winner and how many points each player had. Rather, it will present the contents of your deck to you, and you can sift through and add up the victory points yourself.

6. It won't display the number of actions/coins/buys you have available during your turn.

7. It will let you click on any card to be purchased no matter how much money you have available. If you try to purchase a card that you cannot afford, it is up to your opponent to remind you that you made a mistake.

Yes, simulating real-life play should be Goko's top priority for making a good online product.

Isn't the correct counter to, you know, buy more than one thing a turn?

Or buy Colonies

Or play out your Goons/Bishop/Monument engine. Or just have 1 Estate in your deck to begin with so that your opponent will lose if he mirrors your buys.
