Dominion: Adventures Previews / Bridge Troll change?
« on: April 18, 2015, 09:08:32 am »
Did Bridge Troll only give a buy in your next turn originally, or is my memory just acting up? I remember discussing how it seemed strange to play a Bridge and not get a buy now.

You could do:

Necromancy
$2
Event
Trash a card from the supply. You may buy a card from the trash.

Actually, I could see a supply Trasher work fairly well as an Event.
Thinking about it more, that doesn't have too much utility. Maybe...

Necromancy:
$1
Event
You may buy cards from the trash at $2 less than their normal cost (but no less that 0). During clean up, trash a card from the supply.

Are you intending this to give you the buys you need? Otherwise it does almost nothing if you can't get +buy.

I think it's comparable to Herald.  Herald tells you to play an action card, and that doesn't cost you an action.  This tells you to buy a card, so presumably that shouldn't cost you a buy.  Though I guess it says "cards" plural, so you can buy as many as you want without spending buys?

Black Market is a better example, actually.  Black Market tells you to buy a card, and that doesn't cost a buy.

"You may buy a card" is comparable to herald, which is what the first one said. But "you may buy cards" is different. It does sort of sound like it gives unlimited buys, but it also equally could be interpreted as just saying that your buys can be used on the trash.

There already is a card that's in Dominion that can't be in your deck.  The Trash card.

If the trash card counts as a card, then so do events. They're both things that are printed on cards, but not considered "cards" as far as rules go.

I really like (Generous) Benefactor, but it has a timing issue. When exactly do other players receive the extra $?

I assume it triggers at the start of the players buy phase. Try for a rewording:
"While this is in play, at the start of any other players buy phase, if that player has no Gold, Platinum or attack card in play, he gets +$1"

Neither this nor the original wording will work. You won't have Gold in play at the start of your buy phase normally, you'll play the Gold after that. The only way I can think of is to reduce the cost of cards as long as no Gold is in play. And I wouldn't include a platinum on the list, because this set doesn't have platinum in it.

Also, it looks like it could be balanced without giving anything to the other players. Terminal silver with no extra bonus now, $1 and a buy next turn. I guess the closest comparison is to Merchant Ship, but the $1 instead of $2 next turn is huge. I mean, look at Fishing Village and lighthouse; they only give $1 next turn, they're non-terminal, have other benefits, and cost WAY less than Merchant Ship.

6031
Isn't the phrase "Generous Benefactor" redundant?

I don't think so. "Benefactor" means someone who gave money. "Generous Benefactor" means someone who gave a LOT of money. Like the phrase "give generously". "Generous" in this case doesn't mean "kind" but it means more "without holding back."

Prediction: Swamp Hag will be stronger than it should be, because often people will choose not to buy anything to avoid a Curse, even though they should have just bought a card. Similar to how people sometimes discard their hand to Torturer when it would be better to take the curse. Though it will be weaker when buying events is an option.

Highwayman - Action-Attack-Duration

After your turn, and until your next turn, all cards cost more.

At the start of your next turn: +

This seems like a plausible concept for a Duration-Attack

(Donald thought so too; it turned into Cutpurse.)

But he also mentioned that when he made Seaside, there was pressure to keep Durations to a minimum. That pressure has gone, so he may think it over. I admit that since Seaside a new concern against cost increasers has raised its head, though, and that concern is the similarity of such a card to Cutpurse.

Donald has already said that there is a -$1 token. Giving a player one of these would do the same thing as increasing the cost of cards for them, except it wouldn't punish multiple buys more, and wouldn't interact with TFB.

And then what happens when they play Ghost Ship again next turn?  And the next?  And the next?  I would argue that Ghost Ship is the most brutal handsize attack (yes, worse than Pillage) purely for its anti-cycling effect.

Getting Pillaged every turn is definitely a lot more brutal than getting Ghost Shipped every turn. There's a reason why the former costs a buy every turn and requires you to keep two extra junk cards in your deck and the latter helps you draw more cards instead.

Somehow I don't think gaining 2 Spoils was meant to be a penalty.

No, it would be much weaker without that. But compared to card draw, it's much harder to build an engine that can consistently play one.

What is the reason for the difference between Conspirator and Peddler in terms of what it counts (number of actions played vs number of actions in play)? Is there an actual balance issue there in regards to Throne Room vs one-shots? Or is it just because Conspirator came first and you later decided that it would be easier to count what's currently in play?

6036
I did not like Cosmic Encounter. Too Munchkin-like.

6037
He's talking about 2 separate synergies there. 1 is that Hero is terminal, so Coin of the Realm allows you to play multiple in a turn. The other is that Hero can gain a Coin of the Realm. He did NOT mean to say that you can use Hero to gain a Coin, then call that same Coin to play a second hero.

6038
Worded differently: does TR force duration effects to be played together like it does when they are played as actions?
Throne Room doesn't link those effects on future turns. You can resolve Merchant Ship, Prince, other Merchant Ship.

This makes sense, but I'm almost sure I would have gotten it wrong if the situation ever came up.

Wow this conversation about semantics sure is interesting let's keep it going instead of talking about the actual events ok guys

This sounds sarcastic, but you've +1'd most of the posts here on F.DS... :P

Fixed that for you. :P

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: Preview: Giant
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:04:55 pm »
It will be fun to see what other cards (or events?) use the Journey token and whether this affects the strength of Giant.

More than just affecting the strength of Giant, I think the existence of other cards that use the Journey token will really affect the complexity of Giant.
Given that if the token is the wrong way up this card is a 5-cost terminal copper, managing the token is going to be absolutely crucial to your success.

As it alludes to in the last paragraph of the preview, deciding which of two Journey token cards to use the strong side and which to use the weak side could become a very tricky decision.

This is assuming that other Journey token cards exist, but they must do or it would be called a Giant token, right?
I'm guessing another Journey Token card will be the card that Draws 5 cards when Throned.

I had assumed that was storyteller - certainly it won't always draw 5 cards when throned, but it easily could.

By that notion, Cellar can also draw 5 cards when Throned. Heck, so can Smithy if you only have 5 Cards left in your deck.

Rules Questions / Re: "Naming" a card
« on: April 14, 2015, 05:54:29 pm »
The points is that naming that card from some other game doesn't affect your ability to do anything.
If my opponent names the Develop card from RFTG, that doesn't stop me from buying the Dominion card develop either.

True.

I don't think this is true! I can't name the Develop on the bottom of the supply pile and still allow my opponent to buy the Develop from the top of the supply pile—cards with the same name are treated as equivalent for the purpose of "naming a card".

Hmm, I suppose you're right. Which kind of means that you really are just stating the name of a card, rather than selecting a specific card by naming it. This means that in a deck that has lots of Develops from Dominion AND lots of Develops from Race for the Galaxy, Wishing Well is even better!

But those Develops are a card type, not a card name.

I had assumed he was talking about the role selection cards.  The card type is Development, not Develop.

I assumed so too, but we can always get into if the role cards actually have "names" or not.

Surely you can get them second hand?

I think the point is that future seasons won't exist on DVD.  So second-hand copies are unlikely to be available either.

Right. It's not that they're discontinuing existing products. It's that they aren't going to ever make the product in the first place.

I think it's pretty clear that the thing you name must be a card, even if that card isn't part of the game.  Since Expedition isn't a card, you can't name it.

Similarly, while you can name the Ace of Spades, or Black Lotus, or Caravanseray, or Chennai, or Power Plant #25, you cannot name the T Pentomino, or Tobacco Plantation, or Waterdeep Harbor, or Yahtzee, or N-34, none of which are cards.

I disagree. If Black Lotus is a card, then so is Expedition. Not the expedition from Dominion; that's not a card. But in the thousands of games with cards in them that exist, I'd be shocked if none of them have a card called "expedition". And if not, I'll write "expedition" on an index are right now, and now such a card exists.

If you name a card, you are naming the card itself. You are not "saying the name of a card." Otherwise it would tell you to "say the name of a card."

I don't see how these are different... you are allowed to name "Ace of Spades", which is selecting Ace of Spades as the forbidden card. In the same way, you can select any card in existence, which means that you can select "Expedition" from the whatever game happens to have a card with that name, or the game you created in your head on the spot if no such published game exists currently.

Everyone gets one Journey token. You can't gain multiple tokens.

What he meant though was gaining a use of the powerful giant play. When you play Giant for it's strong effect, it costs you a face-up Journey token. And you're limited to max 1 face-up Journey token at a time. Any card that can flip your journey token can basically be thought of as "gain a face-up journey token" (but still max 1).

General Discussion / Simpsons rant

Well apparently they are going to stop all Simpsons DVD releases.

Man, I'm pissed. I've been buying each and every seasons as it was released since 2001. I've been buying the special "molded head" collectors editions since they started doing that with season 6. I even bought the terrible release of season 20, though I've been greatly looking forward to the day that they would re-release it with all the same stuff that all other sets have had. All in all, probably well over $500 spent on it. All with the assumption that I'd have a complete collection some day.

On top of that, I've been looking forward to seeing more Simpsons as they came out. I'd seen the first 12 or so seasons before I got the DVDs, but for the last several seasons, there's been a mix of plenty of episodes I hadn't yet seen. Now I guess I'll have to find pirated stuff to actually get to watch the show. Yeah, so you can see the whole thing on that stupid FX app or whatever. I looked into that, it seems that you have to be paying for cable television or something to use it. Well screw that. I don't pay for cable television, you know why? Because I can watch the things I want by buying the DVDs!

Man this sucks.

An idea i had today: How about a Reserve that does something nice on play but can only be called back into your deck by buying a VP card? Not necessarily for any great effect besides having it back. Could be a sifter, for example:

Ranger, $4, Action - Reserve
+1 Card
+1 Action
Look at the top two cards of your deck. Put one in your hand. Discard the other one. Put this on your Tavern Mat.
---
When you buy a VP card, you may call this.

The idea of using the Reserve Mat as simply a way of allowing more powerful cards (since you won't get to discard them after every play) is a good one. You could play with all sorts of triggers about what allows them to be called.
