Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Transmogrify
« on: April 30, 2016, 04:24:07 pm »
One nice thing about this card is it IS a Reserve card, so you get to use it on the turns where you have something good to use it on.  Or at the very least, before you draw your cards from playing cards that let you draw them.  Cards like Remodel require you to be able to get them, and then have at least an Action to play them.

Nice late-game combo: Transmogrify/Distant Lands.
That's what I've been doing.  Transmogrify itself is a $4 card, so by way events, there will always be something to Transmogrify from.  If you have 2 of these in your Tavern with a Silver, you can double Transmogrify the Silver into a Distant Lands.

In either case, getting a Distant Lands in this fashion is a guaranteed 4pts since it goes in your hand, and you'll have at least one action to use it.  I wouldn't mind using this early on either, as the Distant Lands that gets Reserved stays out of your deck.

EDIT: In your Tavern, not in hand

I recall Donald did a "if I had a time machine" rebuff for Scout.  Was there ever such a case here?  If not, any user community buffs to make this... well, not such so much, and actually be worth buying more than 5% or so of the cases?

Dominion General Discussion / Re: When did you start playing Dominion
« on: April 27, 2016, 03:01:52 am »
First game of Dominion was at a board game convention that focused on Eurogames, the year Dominion came out in 2008.  It looked interesting, with numerous stacks of cards.  It was on my "want to play list".  I never ended up getting to it, or so I thought.  It was 2am.  There were roughly 5 or 6 tables of average 3.5 players each still going on that late at night.  I asked if anybody was around to teach Dominion, and if there were any sets still available.  One guy said yes, pointing me to a group.  I did my first 4p game then (First game preset).  So simple, but so magical.  Did another game (back-to-back with Big Money preset).  Somebody saw the utility of Chapel, thinning out your deck.  Don't think anybody tried out Throne Room, as I remember somebody saying you'd need to have 2 actions to be able to utilize it (missing that TR itself lets you play a card from your hand, without requiring an action at that point).  When we checked out some of the other cards that came with the game, but didn't get a chance to get to, Thief looked nasty.

I haven't read all of the other replies but I have to admit that I also find this entire ordeal really annoying. I payed the equivalent of $90, so I can occasionally play Dominion at my free leisure. Recently I had troubles in my life and didn't really have time for anything and I still don't and now you're telling me that my purchase will basically be just a waste? Making my purchase the equivalent of a service of about $36 is not a good reimbursement, come on. I'd rather prefer MF to still hold the contract at this time even though it is far from perfect and made me use SCSNs mod to make it more bearable.

I'd rather pay a steep price once than pay a little each month and feel like I wasted money if I don't play at least once this month. I am disillusioned at how poor structered the new pay model is and how everyone is so ecstatic about these news.
And what steep price would that be?  Still $90?  Not to rub salt in the wounds, but MF didn't last long enough for that to pay off.

I honestly think RG is setting themselves up for s class action lawsuit.

....

What they are doing now counts on a court saying that all liability lies with MakingFun. It's possible but I wouldn't count on that if I was Jay.

Are you... serious?  Like, actually serious?  There aren't enough people to form a large class, there isn't a lawyer in the country who would take a class action suit with a maximum payout under a million dollars, and MF's terms, as noted by drsteelhammer, are pretty clear that nothing of the sort was promised, and any lawyer will laugh in your face if even if they were willing to take a very small class action to court.

Sure, I'm not actually a lawyer, but I bet theory will back me up on this assessment of how CA suits work...

And all this to get back $60 per person.

If you want to get a card without taking a Curse via Embargo token, this is such a "loophole".

Games with 4 players end when 4+ piles are empty, not when 3+ piles are empty (this is the standard rule for 5+ player games).

Donald X on a related topic:

4 player games use 16 of each VP card and only end when 4 piles are empty instead of 3. Would make the game less of a sprint for VP.

I like the game length in terms of turns more with 4 Provinces per player, but made it 3 for 4 players due to the game length in terms of minutes. For sure if the minutes aren't an issue for you then 16 Provinces for 4 players is a good variant. I don't know what the best number of empty piles would be, I would have to do testing.
3.5 empty piles! :p  That would be annoying to keep track of though

Like with most newbies, I used to buy it more than I should've.  Nowadays, yeah, the reasoning on why it's bad seems sound.  I'd like to play with a variant that Donald X suggested on how to buff Scout, but I can't recall what that was.

I'd probably get it more if it were a Bane card, but pity it costs $4, not $2 or $3.

Make P/C a 25% chance of being in the game, no matter how many Prosperity cards there are.  So we can have them even if 0 Prosperity cards are in the Kingdom setup, or not have them if they're all Pros.

Ditto with Shelters and DA cards.

Throne Room does require players to be honest about having Action cards in hand to play.  One group, we just made it optional, like Kings Court.

For a game where the player with 5/2 split will be at a disadvantage, we have all players start with a 5/2 split.  One case comes to mind is a Supply with Lab + Chapel.

For a 4p tournament game, 2 randomizer cards were dealt face up into the center.  Each player got 5 cards.  Picked 2 to put face down, and discarded the rest.  Revealed the remaining 8 cards to get our Supply.

In another 4p tourney, 14 randomizer cards were dealt face up.  Each player, starting with the last player and going in reverse turn order got to "veto" a card.  Unfortunately, this made the whole ordeal of thinking through the game before the game even started  :(

Poor House.  Until I Upgrade a Copper, and then realize I'm forced to gain one of those!

Councellor, I think.
I was in a 4p tourney with P/C, and the player that utilized Chancellor kicked our asses.... 80-ish, 55, 53, 35.

It's not always worth it, and even when it is viable, I'll admit I'm lazy and don't like to keep track of things to THAT detail.

As it's competing with Gold, I'd probably rather just get a Gold instead, even though this is more exotic and exciting.

However, if I can get it cheaper via Quarry, then that would be my hook.  And yeah, if there's going to be a slog, then this could be nice.

Plus, any case where you realize how much nicer things would be if you only had one extra card :)

I've heard of people "sneak peaks" at their deck when they weren't supposed to, to use that info about their deck makeup to their advantage.  Otherwise, good to keep track how many points you're getting from Gardens, but the counting can get annoying.

This is a really fun card.

Try shuffling your bloated PStone deck in a real life game, and also try counting how much it's worth every time you play it while you're at it. By the time you're done with your little 1000 turn slog game, you'll have done more counting than Warren Buffett's accountant, and your hands will be sore to boot. I thought fun wasn't supposed to be like working 9-to-5 in a Soviet factory, comrade.

I've had 2p games where we just say "I had 10 coins from a Pstone the last turn, so are you OK with me just buying a Province without having to count?".  The answer was often "yes".

Anyway, as I said, cautious optimism. Everything promised sounds cool, I like the pricing model (seriously I don't have to worry about paying anything for almost 20 months from now, and after that it's less than the price of a tube of Pringles per month). I just worry about how quickly and how well it will be made by two guys.

FWIW, more isn't always better for these sorts of things.  Larger studios can be quite expensive... perhaps beyond the budgets of those involved.  Folks online who claim to be in the know have said working in teams larger than 2 people can get exponentially more expensive.
Larger studios move slower, and collaboration in larger settings can be cumbersome.  If your software is an OS or like Open Office where we're at millions of lines of code, or some enterprise/multi-million $ projects that span hundreds of thousands of lines of code, then it's a tall order for 2 people.  Otherwise, while Dominion isn't trivial, it should still be a project that can be tackled within due time.  AFAIK, the 2 have at least until Jan. of 2017?  That's still 7 months.  Perhaps longer.  And they did mention they're doing this FT for the time being.
