Cobbler/Cost Reduction, gainers usually work great with Cost Reduction, Cobbler unfortunately does not... (And luckily I discovered this againg Lord rat...)

About the thing rrenaud measured, while I find that statistics incredibly interesting, I would make two considerations when interpreting it:

First is the skill difference already mentioned, I find no surprise at all that Goons is first there, because if one player can't properly build an engine and the other can, the second one should have an almost 100% win rate against the first, and a lot of games of Dominion (specially online) are played with two players on opposite sides of that skill threshold. If you take only games with people on the same side of side threshold (but with still a difference in skill) I believe the difference of expected win rate with Goons, against expected win rate without Goons should be much lower. Other cards like Chapel and Donate also should have similar behavior. (even though turn 5 Chapel Syndrome and an exacerbated player 1 advantage with Donate are totally a thing).

The second point, which I will illustrate with completely arbitrary percentages is as follows: Suppose 10% of Dominion games you have the luck factor being considerably favored towards you, 10% of games towards your opponent and 80% of games the luck factors somewhat evens out between the two players. Now suppose I play against Dan with a card like Village, for example, I might win maybe 50% of the games where luck favored me, 25% of games where luck evens out, and 1% of games where luck favored Dan, now if that card was Black Market or Tournament, I would suppose these percentages might look a lot more like this: I could win maybe 90% of games luck favored me, 10% of games with even luck and 0% of games where Dan got lucky.

So overall Dan should win more often against me in games where there are BM/Tournament than in games with Village, but I would still say that BM/Tournament are swingier cards, because they tend to make getting lucky matter more, it's just that they being somewhat hard cards to play properly leads to the better player winning more often on the vast majority of games where the luck factor just isn't that big.

Sorry for the made up percentages, they're just a means to express my idea, I have absolutely no idea if they would be even close to correct.

Dominion: Nocturne Previews / Re: Previews #2: Shepherd, Pooka, Cemetery

Shepherd is becoming one off my favorite cards, itīs like a crazy mix between Storyteller, Stables and Crossroads, and I just find the weird Engine/Slog hybrid it enables incredibly fun to play

In all the cases mentioned, I have some way to respond. I can buy a Harem. I can take advantage of the Arena. I can increase by draw to compensate for the extra curses or ruins in my hand. I have nothing with in my control to directly compensate for Misery.

In a game I just played, I had a one Province lead. I had more than enough money to buy the last Province. My opponent played a Vampire which gave me Envious. He bought a Duchy on that turn and I couldn't buy any points on mine. My opponent was able to buy the last Province on his next turn.  That win did not come through smart play on my opponent's part or an error on mine. It was just dumb luck. I'd been leading throughout the game the my opponent was not far behind. I new I had more money and more draw than my opponent. Based on that, I bought that second to the last Province rather than a Duchy as I would when I'm not sure if I could buy the last one on my next turn.

Maybe with more play they'll grow on my but right now I feel like Hexes just introduce too much luck into the game.

This is also not much different than when you build that awesome sturdy engine only to lose to a much worse deck due to a very unlikely dud in a crucial moment. And I can assure you I have both won and lost a great number of games that way.

In all I have been tending to compare hexes to Swindler, it can range from game winning to just do nothing. And while Swindler is certainly not a card that receives a lot of love around here, we have certainly managed to learned not to mind it much, I think... So I guess hexes should be fine as well  :)

Today I set aside Ironworks with Inheritance. "This'll be great! I can pile down the Estates because Ironworks gaining Estate will give +1 Card +1 Action".

It turns out that after you pile the Estates, a deck with 10+ Ironworks is really bad at doing anything besides gaining Actions that cost < $4.

(Setting aside a better action and using 1-2 Ironworks to gain the Estates works a lot better.)

I did this once and soon realized my mistake, my opponent didnīt though and resigned just as i emptied the estate pile...  :P

Dominion General Discussion / Re: DS blog complaint

What is the benefit of creating content specifically for the blog, and not sharing it with the forum? Less people overall would get to see it.

There is no problem, but if the articles already exist on the forum, it shouldn't take a week to select one and post it on the blog.

Well, during that week a lot of suggestions and modifications are being made to that article, Seprix article on Lurker that got posted went through a few iterations before getting posted there. And another is while we are going through a surge in the articles creation department, it's unreasonable to think that the current rhythm is going to be maintained in the long run, if there's a rush to post everything currently being created on the blog, it might be that soon there won't be any new content to post at all, having things ready to post for periods when the community is not creating so much might be important for the survival of the blog

I would make two more considerations, first is that the blog is, in a sense, a much more permanent archive for the articles than the forum is, I for one know that I read a bunch of the blog/wiki that was written years before I even knew what dominion was, if all that was in the forum I know I would never find it, second is that a lot of people first contact (and I believe for many, only contact) with the dominion community is through the blog, many people never come to the forums and thus would never find much of the newer content that's being generated, the blog can reach a lot of people the forum won't, and I also fear some people might think that a dead blog is the product of a dead community and also never get to become a part of it.

So, a lot of those points aren't really relevant for a lot of us regulars/lurkers from the forum, but that's just because we aren't the central group that a lot of those post are aimed at, but there still awesome content being made that we can enjoy, I know that a lot of people (I at least) surely enjoyed the podcast made by Seprix and BA for the blog (the interview with Dan Brooks in the second episode is specially good) and that wasn't available anywhere in the forums beforehand

Ritual + Rats
Rats trims your deck.

No it doesn't.

It does after you get all 20 of them...  :P

In a more useful note I think  Ritual + Rats can work, but it would need support, probably another trasher that can trash excess rats

Villa + Pathfinding

Isn't almost every village that naturally has +1 card going to be crazier with +2 cards than villa will have with +1 card?

My favorite pathfinding target is magpie, because it helps you get more magpies, spikes you up to 8 without needing to fill your deck with early treasure, and helps your engine become more resilient in the face of the treasure you do have.

While you're generally right, I'd say Villa is a really good Pathfinding target, because in most Villa games you end up overbuying Villas to allow all the crazy magic it does, and after they're gone the fact that they don't draw hurts your deck a lot...

I have recently discovered that there is a semi-active brazilian Dominion community (it seems mostly focused on IRL play, but there are some people who seem to play online), so it might be possible to form a brazilian team (albeit not a very competitive one...), if it's ok with organizers, and there is interest from other people, other cool ideas might be a Latin America team (I believe Canada can make it's own team, right?), or even a Southern Hemisphere team (best players from half the globe!...) Still have no idea if either of those would actually  have enough players...

Dominion Articles / Re: Stop buying Duchy over Gardens
« on: August 31, 2017, 01:08:24 am »
It does happen sometimes, though, that the one point difference between your soon to be worth 3, and futurely worth 4 Garden (after excessive Duchy/Garden dancing) is exactly the difference for your opponent, with an still reliable (but soon to crumble), engine to get the next province without worrying about Penultimate Province Rule, it's a situation I've come by quite a few time, where I really needed the points now and hadto take the Duchy, even though i knew Garden would soon be worth more ...

This was weaker than a lot of us thought.

Salt the Earth isn't strong per se, but it's a card whose presence you pretty much can never ignore...

Inheritance is higher than Pathfinding on the 6+ list, but Pathfinding is higher on the event list. weird. (I have Inheritance #1 on events and #6 on 6+.)

Hm, that is indeed weird. Let me look soon if I messed something up as this shouldn't happen at all.

One possible cause for this is that maybe people who rank Inheritance over Pathfinding put, on average, a bigger gap between them in the 6+ list than the people who rank them the other way around...

Intentional Alms is really edge-casey. Like this: For some reason, you want your opponent to think you don't have enough buys to end the game, so that he does something stupid. Like, buy Alms then Villa, play Governor and hope that your opponent trashes the wrong card. Something like that.

you have two buys $4 and you want that Messenger but not the trigger.

In this case you could still generally not play your treasures and get Alms for the Messenger, thought you might have had to play a Crown or played treasures to buy something out of BM before, or something else and then your example would work perfectly...

I just realized that Farmerīs Market trashed itself when played for points, I was playing an treasureless (against Pirate Ship) engine based on Plaza, Wishing Well, Sentry and a lot of FMīs and suddenlly I start seeing that my Farmerīs Markets are disapering, and I start cursing myself for accidently trashing them with Sentry (I actually did that once in the midgame) and only at the end do I get to carefully read the card and see why there were 6 FMs on the trash... Still managed to squeeze a close win though... :P
