No Thief? Ba-dum-tsss!

For some reason Thief struck me as too harsh.  I mean a Thief takes something from you against your will, whereas a Swindler or a Mountebank might just trick you into buying something you regret.

Indeed, and they haven't taken anyone's money yet, so Thief would be very, very hard to justify.  Even Swindler, at this point, is probably tough.

You could argue that they've Swindled the VCs out of $8M.

It's a safe bet it will be launched by 8/22, anyway.
I, on the other hand, was so so wrong on this.  :-[

If you were wrong about that, what else have you been wrong about?  Clearly you have zero credibility and we should throw out anything you've ever said!

(Sorry, influence of presidential election year politics bleeding through)

Hm, you may also be technically correct about that.  But now we're arguing semantics... the best kind of arguing?

On the internet?  Without a doubt. :)

No, a failed launch is still a launch.

This is an interesting assertion.  Is a rocket that explodes on the launchpad still considered a launch?

I've tried to reference it as a "failed launch attempt"

How about a Goko-themed set of existing cards:

Fool's Gold
Develop
Scheme
Swindler
Spy
Market
Mountebank
Venture
Hoard
Bank

I think it'd be cool for Trashing to just drag the card from your hand to the trash -- No misclicks then!

And for discarding, move it from your hand to the discard pile -- No misclicks either!

Genuinely notsureifserious

But.... the signal to noise ratio on this thing was abysmally low.

I think he was talking about the audio quality?  Could be wrong, though...

No, I was definitely talking about the content vs. fluff ratio.  Audio quality was fine.

The most annoying thing with the interface is cards like Watchtower and Spy why force you to drag a card to a pile that's 1/20th the size of the card being dragged.  I'd argue that Spy is even  worse than Watchtower because it's very easy to accidentally drag it to the wrong pile.
This is why the Ascension app puts the trash in upper right, discard in lower right, deck in lower left. Most of the Goko interface layout is pretty good, so it's a little baffling why the deck and discard went right next to each other.

And I believe in Ascension you can just tap the pile you want it to go to, right?  You don't need to drag the card there.
You can either drag the card to where you want it to go, or you can double-tap the card then tap a button indicating where you want it to end up. (This interface is great on a tablet, but would be awful with a mouse, IMO.)

Right you are. I just fired it up to test it out.  I like having the button option with the card zoomed in, it's a nice reminder of what you're doing with the card.

Tried to watch the video - it says it's private? :(

You have to click the button on the bottom that says YouTube in order to watch it on YouTube.com; you can't just watch it in the forum post.

I was able to watch it inline.

Yeah. :( Although Goons/WT is a little painful even on isotropic (but less so).

It's not even close.

Seems I'm in the minority here.  Well, pardon me for not owning an iPad, and still owning a phone that flips open and only calls and texts.

I'm sorry if I offended you, it wasn't my intention.

But I do think you, and many of the users here, ARE in the minority who primarily want an Isotropic replacement -- a means of playing competitive Dominion online against other people.  I believe there's a larger potential player base who want a way to play Dominion on their mobile devices as a means of passing the time here or there.

As others have stated, it seems Goko is struggling to please both camps with their pricing and their implementation choices.  Back when I would play on Isotropic regularly -- obsessively if I'm honest -- the $85 price tag would have seemed reasonable.  These days I'd put myself in the other camp and $85 seems far to expensive, even if I could play it offline against the AI.

Where do people keep getting $85?  Not that it makes all that much of a difference, but excluding Guilds, the price tag would be $78 with all expansions (if you bought all your Gokoins in sets of 50, rather than in bulk).  With Guilds, that's still $84, which is nitpicking, I know, but it's still different.

One of my favorite things about the internet: most attempts at meaningful conversation are derailed by nitpicking trivial details.

Sorry - it's been bothering me, and I've already pointed it out once, and I have no idea where people got $85 in the first place.

We all do it, me included.

I'm not sure where I got $85.  Probably one of the early "calculations" from a week ago came up with $85 and that number stuck with me.  But even at $78, my point is that I think that's more than the majority of the player base will consider spending, and that pricing their app based on what the top Isotropic users will pay feels a bit like pricing crack for addicts.

So the question is more about whether the mobile market is significant enough to warrant offline play.

It seems like most game apps these days are targeted to the mobile market first.  Goko seems to be targeting "large computers" first, mobile devices second.  I don't really understand why.

To all of you who want offline play:

Blizzard killed it with StarCraft II and Diablo III.  At this point in time, anyone who is going to be playing your game is going to have an internet connection.  There's really no point in even making an offline option, at least for widely marketed games.

This sounds like someone who doesn't play a lot of iOS games.  I'd bet you 1,000 gokoins that the majority of iOS Carcassonne|Ascension|Ticket to Ride games take place offline.

821
It is listed as v378.  Looks different, though.  Many avatars to choose from, better leaderboard.  I see no difference in the actual game.  I don't program, so I can't speak to the security concerns.

This sounds like the last version I played before launch attempt #1.

One tidbit I hadn't seen yet: DXV confirmed Goko has a 5-year exclusive contract to Dominion.

I saw Jay from RGG confirm that over on BGG.

Link?

I just scanned through his contributions on the site and didn't see it - but I could be mistaken.

It's in this thread: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/12607/multi-platform-release-dominion

Someone quotes an email exchange they had with Jay.  I guess they could be lying, but seems unlikely.

It sets me wondering whether companies that have produced critically acclaimed IOS implementations that have done justice to their "source material" (such as Ticket to Ride and Ascension) were also considered and rejected - and if they were rejected, on what basis?
There was a little bit about this in ednever's interview with Jay:
Quote
I asked him how he selected FunSockets. He said that people have been coming to him for years asking to develop an online Dominion game. He did not like any of the proposals. Two examples of why:

1- The wanted to make it platform-specific. They would slowly roll out platforms over time. Jay is not a technology guy, so he didn't have counter proposals, but he didn't like the idea. FunSockets came to him with HTML5 - playform agnostic. It's what sold him (even though he hadn't heard of HTML5 before)

2- DominionSocal. Imagine if you played Dominion, but if you did well, or payed extra money you could get to draw an extra card every few turns. Or the ability to see your opponents hand. Or decide your starting hand. Or get a free silver in your deck. Or many more things. All you have to do is pay a small fee... (this is the Zynga Farmville/CityVille/etc model). They told him, "This is how you make money with games online."  He said this is not how he was going to make money with Dominion - because it wouldn't be Dominion anymore.
So, the iOS-specific developers would likely fail at #1.

Goko isn't exactly excelling at #1.

824
I know that decisions have been made and all, but I would personally enjoy a solitaire-only version of Isotropic, because that is really one of two reasons why I am any good at this game at all. Not sure if anyone else feels the same about this.

I would like an offline solitaire version, maybe with a bot (rudimentary, advanced, whatever).  I play Androminion way more than I should.

By the way, congrats on your new blue star. :)
Dunno what dougz is going to do with the code, but if he removes the card names I can totally see you/us playing solitaire isotropic on a local server in a few months, or see GendoIkari playing with his wife in a local network.

Darknet Dominion!  Let's make it happen.

825
So http://dominion.goko.com/Dominion/v378/gameClient.html is still where I should be going?
As far as I know, yes. There has been zero activity in the Goko beta forums for days, and v378 is an older version that what was supposed to be available during the launch. So I'm not even sure if they are still paying attention to the beta at all.

This is my understanding as well.  They haven't responded to queries on the ipbhost board, on getsatisfaction as to what (if anything) they would like us to be doing.

Maybe we've all been fired for insubordination.
