Do you do any sort of numerical estimate of how often a card or card-shaped-thing will be relevant when designing it?

I was thinking specifically of Capitalism, but I suppose this could also apply to many reaction cards.

It's difficult, but not impossible to sort the Knights any way you wish. Ambassador helps.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Slow-Playing Detection?
« on: February 21, 2019, 04:23:31 pm »
If there is a solution, I think it needs to be invisible to the players. Otherwise you've just traded one meta-game for another.

Some kind of adaptive timer seems best.

Boo. This was the only list that was in a useful order.

I picked up Renaissance this week week and I loved it! I've always been a fan of the simpler sets, my favorite being Seaside and my wife's being the Base set, so getting a new expansion somewhere around that complexity has been fun for us. You said in the secret history that expansions have gotten too complex and that this one was made intentionally simple. Where do you think future expansions will fall on the complexity scale?
They will try to be as simple as Renaissance, but I don't know how well I'll do there. I'll have to put in the work to know for sure though.

There are plenty of simple game mechanics so far untouched by Dominion, such as dexterity and social deduction. Clear opportunity to incorporate the mythical nose-stealing competition into the game.

The Dominion League is bigger than it has ever been.

When Dominion was run by Goko and Making Fun, ragingduckd had a plot showing the number of Dominion games played each day. I don't think such a plot exists for Shuffle IT but you should be able to get an estimate by checking how game numbers change between days (assuming it always counts up by 1). If you poke someone with access to the raw stats (people who work on Dominion Scavenger), maybe you can get estimates that way.

I think it's something like 35k games a day on Dominion Online, about a third of which are rated games.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Taking Notes - Against the Rules?
« on: February 07, 2019, 10:55:15 pm »
I'm now imagining what might simultaneously be the best and worst game of Dominion, in which one player continuously sings aloud an improvised song detailing the contents of each player's deck.

Sadly Dominion's rules are superseded by both local laws and laws of nature. Otherwise I would long ago have made "For the rest of this turn, there is no entropy" and then wandered off into the world of dreams.

This is forum hall-of-fame material.

I don't even want to think about how many different MtG decks you could construct.

The answer is 2: Aggro or Control.

6 Nimmt (aka Category 5) is my favorite non-social-deduction, non-party game answer to this question. It works well even with 10!

(Meanwhile, Citadels is one of the worst)

Dracs* like Donate and Keep (and cards like Chapel) pretty dramatically change the way the game plays at the table in what I believe to be an intentional way.  (Unlike, say, Rebuild, which often dominates Kingdoms in a way I suspect was less intentional.)  I'm not sure anything in Renaissance comes quite to that level, although Capitalism might be close.

Cathedral is probably pretty close to Donate.

Agree.

I think Cathedral is a lot closer than Capitalism to Donate's warping power.

My favorites are probably Governor and Envoy. My least favorite is probably Dismantle, though, frankly, I don't dislike any of them.  I do like Black Market, but I only play with it when I play online -- I just haven't come up with an easy way to incorporate it IRL.

Two good options:

1) Use a randomizer app that includes a black market. That way you're only fishing for the card if someone buys it.

2) Make the Black market deck from the blue-backed placeholder cards. Sure, you'll be able to identify tell if a card in someone else's hand came from the Black Market, but that's a minor bit of info leak in exchange for much easier setup.

While we're on the subject of strange treasures, am I the only person bugged by Fortune saying "x2" in the corner instead of "×2"? Lower-case X and a multiplication sign are not the same!

*twitch*

If you think that's bad, don't look too closely at your Curse cards.

It requires none of your time when not playing

I am doing something terribly wrong, it seems.

If Miser let you put any Treasure card on your mat, things could get very confusing indeed with Capitalism.

42
I can always tell which cards are from the new expansion. They're the ones in the untarnished sleeves.

But, honestly, I think there are more important things to worry about, like talking to the people you're playing with and having a good time.

43
It could be worse, the card backs could all say 'Deckmaster' on them.

For a moment there I thought I might have a shot tomorrow.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Secret History discussion thread
« on: November 14, 2018, 07:21:13 pm »
Not all Projects are pure upside, but I didn't spot any in the long list of outtakes. I understand it is partly because in-game downside effects are often missed, but some end-of-game condition (like a gentle version of a Wall, maybe a ditch) could have been considered, and I wonder why it wasn't.
I'm not sure what you mean, but I specifically tried to have Projects not overlap much with Events and Landmarks. So no VP Project, no Projects you buy repeatedly.

Cathedral seems like it's not "pure upside".

Otherwise, the big downside to Projects seems to be the same as many things in Dominion: buying one when you should have bought something else.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why Peasant Will Be On My Ban List
« on: November 12, 2018, 10:54:29 pm »
The beauty of having a ban list - or playing irl where everyone has it - is that there can be cool fun cards like Peasant and King's Court and people who hate them don't have to play with them.

It also means you can take a break from those cards, then realize you miss them, and enjoy them again.

47
Maybe the 24 cards in Renaissance are correct and it's all the rest that are wrong.

Priest is more corrupt than the Bishop. He steals more money for you and does nothing to help his fellow man.

Experiment + Devil's Workshop

Buy an Experiment, gain two of them, and get an imp from Devil's Workshop

The other nice thing about this is that your Imps can repeatedly play Experiments.

I remain surprised there's never been a cost increaser in Dominion. I mean, as an attack that stacked it would clearly suck majorly, but that's not the only thing which could be done with such a mechanic.

I think this idea has been tried in testing, but has ultimately ended up as a variant on cost-increase such as Cutpurse or Bridge Troll.
