As promised, here are the game logs from my match with dghunter79 (original results post quoted below). We played all games with identical starting hands.
In a very close series full of very close games, Voltgloss (48) defeated dghunter79 (17) 4-3 in the Thief Division. I'll post the game logs and recaps once they hit Council Room.
Thanks very much, dghunter79, for all the great games. Looking forward to matching you again on Iso in the future!
Game 1:
dghunter79 - 32, Voltgloss - 30
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-071404-8f8de94c.htmlWe both open JoaT/Silver and follow Big-Money-Esque strategies with Swindler support. dghunter also picked up a Moneylender early, which I Swindled into a Bishop... a key mistake, as he later Bishops a Gold to get the few extra VP he needs to win the match. In retrospect, swindling the Moneylender into a Caravan would probably have been the better move.
Game 2:
Voltgloss - 32, dghunter79 - 31
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-072403-4d9219d2.htmldghunter opens Spice Merchant/Fishing Village while I go for Fishing Village x2, with both of us grabbing a Library and a Cartographer along the way. dghunter trashes almost all of his Copper and holds the lead for most of the game, but in the end his deck stalls (with 42% unusable green) while I draw enough Coppers and Silvers my final turns to sneak the last two Provinces. Using Trader to triple an extraneous Silver on turn 12 was probably key.
Game 3: dghunter79 - 28,
Voltgloss - 35http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-073310-284a6279.htmlMore Fishing Village fun, but this time we only get two each. We both dump Estates and go for Golds using Masquerade and Monument for support. My Jester luckily forces dghunter to discard Gold on turn 13, preventing him from buying the last Province on turn 14 and letting me snap it up instead for the win.
Game 4:
dghunter79 - 38, Voltgloss - 27
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-074611-57be995f.htmlOn a 5-2 split, we both open Merchant Ship/-. With the only curser as Young Witch and the bane being Great Hall, I come up with the bright idea of slamming the Great Halls down and then using YW myself to hit dghunter with Curses. Well, I win both splits (6-2 Great Halls and 1-3 Curses) but lose handily thanks to dghunter improving his economy faster and getting a 6-2 Province advantage. A Throne Roomed Tribute on his last turn that gets him 4 cards, $2, and 2 actions (from hitting two of my Great Halls) is the final nail in my coffin.
Game 5: Voltgloss - 26,
dghunter79 - 35http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-080343-936d94a4.htmlA fun Peddler match with Black Market shenanigans. I open BM/Farming Village with an eye to spam FVs, pick up Peddlers, and convert them into Provinces while buying Farmlands. dghunter opens Monument/BM but ultimately switches to Farming Villages/Peddlers himself. Ironically, neither of us buy any Farmlands the entire game, as we both pick up trash-for-benefit from the BM - I get Salvager, he gets Forge. Ultimately Forge proves more useful as it lets dghunter thin his deck while converting miscellaneous cards into Duchies or Provinces - and thus letting him draw and play Forge more often. Plus, I'm pretty sure I goofed at least one, maybe more, turns when I could have benefited from a Farmland buy, but overlooked doing so with Salvager in my deck.
Game 6:
Voltgloss - 50, dghunter79 - 36
http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-081731-8282bb2e.htmlTunnel/Secret Chamber madness. dghunter opens Silver/Silver while I dive straight in with Ironworks/Tunnel. I win the Tunnel split 5-3 and amass 6 Secret Chambers and, ultimately, 9 Golds to dghunter's 5. I also pick up a Harvest to discard my Tunnels even more often. Ultimately, my greater Gold density leads to a 5-3 Province split for the win.
Game 7: dghunter79 - 15,
Voltgloss - 37http://councilroom.com/game?game_id=game-20111203-083803-663b69d0.htmlThe most dramatic game of the match, fitting for the finale. The only Colony game of the seven. And a wicked attacking match, sporting Familiars, Minions, and Militias. Shuffle luck gives me two Familiars early, but dghunter focuses on Minions and (by using them to make me discard Familiars) wins
both the Minion split (7-3) and the Curse split (4-6). But without any way to trash Coppers or Curses, dghunter's Minion engine can't get above Duchy level. Meanwhile, I managed to sneak two Banks and a Platinum early on - before dghunter's deck starts slamming me down to 4 cards every turn and clogs me with Curses - and decide that the only way I can win is to get "one big turn." For that, I get a Council Room. On turn 23, it hands me a second Platinum. And then, on turn 28, from a hand of CR-Copper-Copper-Copper-Curse, I finally hit the big payoff:
--- Voltgloss's turn 28 ---
Voltgloss plays a Council Room.
... drawing 4 cards and getting +1 buy.
... dghunter79 draws 1 card.
Voltgloss plays 3 Coppers, 2 Platinums, and a Silver.
Voltgloss plays a Bank.
... which is worth +$7.
Voltgloss buys a Colony.
Voltgloss buys a Colony.
(Voltgloss reshuffles.)
Kudos to dghunter79 for an exciting, well-fought series full of games with varied strategies. It was a blast.
