Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is border village a trap?
« on: November 28, 2011, 01:04:22 pm »
Border Village is also a great defence against Swindler. Swindle it into a Gold? Or another Border Village plus a $5 card?

BV is about as good of a defense against Swindler as Gold is.

Which is to say, it's about the same as Gold. I mean, if I'd be leery of hitting your Golds if BV and a decent $5 card were in the kingdom.

I think what he's saying is: if you swindle a gold, you can always just turn it into another gold.  Doesn't hurt your opponent and doesn't help him either (plus he just effectively discarded a gold)

If you swindle a border village, then you either have to turn it into another border village - giving your opponent a free $5 card - or turn what is effectively a $3-value village into a $6 value gold.  Either way your opponent wins big.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Veto strategy

I veto random, every time.

I'd prefer to have a completely random kingdom.. but I don't want people to be able to back out of games by seeing the layout beforehand (this makes it not random, too)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Handicapping

I think the best and cleanest way to handicap would be for the more experienced player to skip his first turn (or multiple turns if necessary)

Doesn't distort the game like adding curses or drawing 4 cards would.

And you can even use this method on isotropic!

Tunnel is way too good.. $3 for 2 VP is great all by itself and now there's a perfect combo with any discard effect ever!

Maybe I'm misreading it but crossroads looks too strong.. practically strictly better than cellar!

Fool's Gold + Council Room deck... wouldn't it be a good strategy?
And if you can add Border Village... (and gain more Fool's Gold and Council Rooms...)

Funny you say this, my first and only game so far with Fool's Gold I did Fool's Gold/Council Room.  It worked quite well, though it didn't feel crazy good. The other guy didn't have a plan beyond big money and still got 3 of the provinces.

I think the key to Fool's Gold is something with +card and +buy. So Market, Council Room, Worker's Village yes.  Woodcutter, Laboratory, Salvager no.  Undecided on Herbalist.  That would be interesting..

Side note: I have serious thematic problems with this card.  Why would people NOT be tricked the first time and then tricked every time after?  Maybe rename it "propaganda" :P

Thinking about it, I guess missing shuffles is a pretty significant drawback.. on isotropic it's hard to notice that kind of thing.  Thanks all for the replies!

I know minion is a great card but the obvious difficulty with setting up Minion decks is you can't always get to $5 per turn early on.

Lighthouse erases that problem because minions with lighthouses are as good as all minions.

Lighthouse just seems to have no real weaknesses whether minions are around or not.. under what conditions would you buy a silver with $3 over a lighthouse??

Dominion General Discussion / Lighthouse: stupidly overpowered?
« on: September 24, 2011, 06:19:12 pm »
Compare lighthouse to silver to which it is very similar:

1.  Costs $2 instead of $3 - big advantage
2.  Played during action phase so it combos like crazy with "draw up to x" cards like minion, watchtower, library - big advantage
3.  Makes you completely immune to attack - wtf???
4.  Delays half the income by one turn.  That's supposed to balance out the above.. but in practice I don't find it hurting at all.  In fact it helps a little bit - by smoothing out your income it delays the need for +buy.  I'd rather have $6/$6 turns than one dead turn and another with $12 where I waste a big chunk of my money.

I just played a board involving Minion and Lighthouse.  I pretended there was nothing but those two cards and Province and just robotically purchased the highest one I could each turn.  My opponent, who was of the ridiculous opinion that other cards matter, got crushed.  It was the least fun Dominion game I ever won.
