Dominion General Discussion / What card is worst for you?
« on: June 17, 2012, 11:04:48 pm »
I've managed to get a Win Rate given available > 1 with every card in Dominion.

Except one.

Cache, stupid card, I apparently have no idea when to buy you. -4.04 effect without is pretty damning.

The updates to this thread have set me perusing the leaderboard, and there's a very curious entry in the ascendency:
Quote
60.263 ± 19.815421287kyrmanakos ▲ 3
Their recent game history doesn't look like obvious leaderboard gaming, although it's a little odd.

their last games are going 33/35 against one other player, who happens to have a very similar name

It was weird moving from North Carolina to Minnesota and feeling my body acclimate itself to the temperature shift over time.

I used to be able to tell 80 F from 85 F just by walking outside, and anything below 30 was just "cold".

Now I can tell 10 F from 15 F no problem, but anything above 80 is just "hot".

It should go

1: Solitaire
2: Double Player
3: Multi Player
4: Mega Player
5: Ultra Player
6+: M-M-M-Monster Player

Oh, and I think I've actually solved it:

Your hand is Native Village, Swindler, Courtyard, Fools Gold, Fools Gold.

You play a Native Village, taking nothing from the Mat.

You play a Swinder. Your opponent reveals a Province, which you turn into a Province. You trash your Fools Golds and gain 2 Golds on your deck.

You play Courtyard, putting the third card back onto your deck.

You buy a Province.

Oh. Also there's this, which is much closer to your stipulations.

It's a 3 player game.

Your hand is Woodcutter, Fools Gold x4.

You play Woodcutter, then 4 Fools Gold. You buy a Noble Brigand, gaining a Gold from each opponent. You buy a Province.

Okay, here's a "better" solution. (I know it doesn't technically count ;) )

Your hand is Native Village, Masquerade, and some other cards.

You play Native Village, Masquerade, and your opponent passes you a Possession, which you play.

During your Possessed turn, you contrive to buy a Province, 2 Golds, and also to Masquerade a Watchtower into your hand. So that when you also purchase everything that was in the hand you just drew, and the 3 cards you drew during your last turn, you can put them back on top of your deck in the same order they were.

You've already played a Ghost Ship, and B-Crat is the 8th/11th different card you need for Horn of Plenty

Are they cards that some spell checker flags?

Since it's dark ages I'm thinking there'll be an attack card that will make torturer look pleasant. If the theme is trash;

Emperor:
Each other player draws a card, then reveals a card from his hand. He either trashes it, or gains a copy of it and puts both it and the revealed card on top of his deck; your choice. You may also gain a copy of the revealed card.

I don't think they'll make cards that make card-destruction pins easier.

Fabian 3 - 1 help im a bug

Fabian 33 - 34 bug
I go for Treasure Maps with a Talisman, and am lucky enough to have them hit early. Early enough where I feel I can ignore King's Court and race for Province pretty easily. I buy my fourth on turn 12 and feel pretty reasonably safe, but from there I choke pretty hard and go on to lose.

Fabian 48 - 39 bug
A pretty BMesque game with Monument (and later Farmland) as the key cards. bug goes for more actions than I do early, with multiple Remodels and getting a third Monument a few turns before I do, and Festivals and stuff. Meanwhile I have lots of $6 cards (Farmland and Gold) and can turn those into Provinces reasonably safely, even though he cleverly runs out the Farmlands pile to make it a bit harder.

Fabian 31 - 21 bug
We open Silver/Smugglers and slowly start buying lots of expensive stuff (Bazaar, two Tactician each, then Goons with Council Room/Minion making guest appearances). I have more Goons in my deck, and with a small lead and three Goons lining up on a Tactician turn I can buy all but one Fool's Gold with a big enough VP chip lead to feel safe.

Fabian 38 - 32 bug
Sea Hag/Silver game where bug goes for Apothecaries and more of an action chain and I buy some Golds and Silvers instead. He wins the curse split 6/4 but I can buy enough green cards to put the game away. There's a one turn window after he's got two Duchy+Estate turns where he could catch up, but his deck isn't really equipped to buy Province at that point, and his blind Embassy comes up with $3P.

Thanks for the games bug!

Good games, Fabian. I don't remember exactly what I said but I do remember already being on tilt at the start of the match and it pretty much continued through it ;). So sorry if I was particularly whiny.

I felt pretty thoroughly outplayed.

No. Islands are notoriously dishonorable places.

Anyone could explain the answer? i don't quite get it...  :-\

Answer: These are all the cards that can return one player's gamestate to its starting state; 3 estates, 7 coppers, nothing else. At least, that's what I had in mind.

Correct :)

What's your reasoning?

Hint #1:

These cards can be subdivided into two discrete categories, like so:

noble brigand, swindler, masquerade, thief, jester, ambassador, mountebank, saboteur, pirate ship, bishop

mining village, feast, embargo, treasure map.

The missing card fits in the first category.

Do the card names have anything to do with it?

No

Actually, Platinum would be down below even colony

Hmm, yeah I guess you could see all the Treasure cards that way (except the ? ones). Those bug me though. I can't think of a good card-design reason that those numbers should be on the upper-right and upper-left of the card. The giant number in the middle tells you what the treasure is worth.

Presumably for a similar reason that regular playing cards do it

Platinum    22.71 ± 0.01    22.71 ± 0.01
Witch    22.69 ± 0.02    24.71 ± 0.05
Ghost Ship    22.07 ± 0.02    24.33 ± 0.05
