Help! / Re: Seprix's Game Report Centre
« on: June 06, 2016, 11:32:46 pm »
We tried only once and it was close but the King Of Silver won and I lost playing the Ambassador. That'll teach me to talk about messenger before the game starts.

I think his draws were slightly worse then mine. I could have built longer but I don't think that helps; more time just means more Silvers for him. My initial plan was to play with only 1 Ambassador, but when I got the ratcatcher/Feodum in my deck I wanted to trash more fanatically.

I'm not even sure if opening Messenger+Feodum is a good idea for SCSN, or that getting Feodum on turns 2 and 5 is the optimal move for the strategy. It prevented him from hitting $5 for Trade as often and the Feodums probably helped you by giving you free Silvers.

I was thinking of opening Silver/Messenger+Silver and just hoping to buy Trade as much as possible to exchange junk for Silvers before diving into green.

I'd love to hear other thoughts on that kingdom because I'd consider skipping Ambassador completely.

Help! / Re: funkdoc's journey to 5k (& beyond)
« on: June 04, 2016, 10:14:18 pm »
of course!  people think it's just mashing buttons but there's so much more.  what i meant is, it's all still really fast-paced.  it always feels like there's something going on, in a way that it doesn't when Stef or Adam sits there inactive for minutes on end.

I mean, you just have to pretend that all of the cards are buttons, and you're clicking them together in your head as fast as you can.

i'm an action junkie, probably thanks to my many years in Street Fighter etc...i just wanna click buttons and do things that make me feel cool & powerful, ya know?

Isn't SF (and all fighting games) about being patient and finding openings? If all you do in SF is click buttons, then you must not be very good at it.

General Discussion / Re: Portraying Schizophrenia
« on: June 01, 2016, 12:40:20 am »
When not part of a conversation, obsessively chew on my lips. This produces a kind of tic effect that should indicate that there is a disorder.

I don't think that tics are strongly associated with schizophrenia.

In any case, you've done some reading on symptoms of schizophrenia, so pardon me if you already know what I'm telling you. Schizophrenia symptoms are divided into positive symptoms (psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, disordered thoughts) and negative symptoms (blunted affect, alogia, anhedonia, diminished movement). Medications used to treat schizophrenia are commonly much more effective at managing the positive symptoms than the negative symptoms. Hence, if Danny is effectively managed, he would probably not be floridly psychotic unless he stops taking his medications.

So if you wanted to portray managed schizophrenia in a non-outrageous way, I think that you should try to exhibit some of the negative symptoms. Since it's hard to get a good handle on what blunted affect or alogia or diminished movement really are, you would benefit from talking to and observing real people with schizophrenia.

While on my psychiatry rotation, I interacted with a handful of schizophrenic patients, and the best way that I can describe them is that they always appear to be uninterested in what you're doing or saying. You can tell a joke and they won't smile; you can show concern and they won't acknowledge it; you can press for detail but they usually won't say more than a few words.

Just playing more cards doesn't guarantee that you win in Dominion...

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Partnership Dominion
« on: May 19, 2015, 11:26:36 pm »
At one point I thought about designing some fan cards that would only do something in team Dominion. I never had time to refine the ideas, though.

11
The best thing about HT is, that it's reaction part actually helps it's action part a lot:
HT+Silver+xyz >= $5,
HT+Gold+xyz >= $6
Getting an extra card raises the odds of pairing Silver + HT or Gold+ HT.

This isn't actually a huge consideration since usually xyz contains some number of Copper.

In a 2P game I can chant ymyosl to myself

I would love to see this, preferably in the form of an incantation.

My [former] RL play group refuses to play Dominion with me online with the exception of one person who doesn't mind losing all that much, and I end up getting super salty when I lose because there's the expectation for me to win every game and always figure out the best strategy in a given kingdom.

2)  I've played some pretty fun Amb games where I end up getting 3x Amb, buy a curse, and flood them w/ curses w/o returning any until they're all gone.  Is this too slow?  What about sending terminals, e.g., Ambassador once you're thin?  When would you proceed like the game posted above, i.e., not focus on major spamming?

The times when you get a Curse to send back, from my experience, are either when you've pulled far ahead of your opponent in the Amb war (in which case you've basically won anyway if you don't screw things up), or when your opponent is trying to beat you with a non-Amb strategy.

14
Oooh I would love to attend. Can you suggest ways to get to the location via public transport? I'm not keen on driving around in Chicago.

15
All points about game 1 are embarrassingly valid. I was considering the game a FG rush insread of terminal draw BM.

Many games with FG are FG rushes. There's no dichotomy that says that FG rushes can't also be terminal draw BM. FG rushes are actually somewhat likely to be terminal draw BM because FG is a money-centric strategy. I think this is a habit that players fall into when they like to categorize decks: they forget about the actual card interactions.

For game 2 I would normally solitaire to experiment, but I don't have Prince. Given that slog has zero support outside of HT, I'm inclined to think that an engine can beat it. A princed Moat is the equivalent of 2 Labs.

Dominion: Adventures Previews / Re: Adventures Cards Power Ranking
« on: May 10, 2015, 06:40:31 pm »
Well, I'm not saying it's a bad card or that I dislike it or anything.  I just think that with no support you are barely going to get it to do anything, whereas the stronger cards in the game are either enablers like trashers or powerful on their own like wharf.

With "no support," Wine Merchant is so, so bad though.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Greed (beta)

I would argue that takes more processing than its current form, since you have to read it and then ask how much Countess itself costs. It also plays strangely with Ferry. Finally, it loses fun interactions with trash-for-benefits on your starting Estates.

But that's not a problem; Border Village and Band of Misfits both use this type of wording.

Why not just change Countess's text below the line to "in games using this, Victory cards that cost more than this cost $1 more?"

lol it worked! http://www.gokosalvager.com/static/logprettifier.html?/20150508/log.516d4fd3e4b082c74d7b96c1.1431147313127.txt

Solitaire, but maybe you can throw a Possession or two in there. That can definitely kill Adventurer-BM.

There is a synergy between Scout, Crossroads, and Mystic; I have no idea if it will work.

Between Stables and Inn, I'm pretty sure it's possible to build a deck while engaging in the Amb war? In tight decks, Amb returns more cards than the opponent gives (unless the opponent somehow gives all different cards), which means that you don't need to match your opponent in Amb count to avoid losing the Amb war. Stables and Harem form a mild synergy that becomes more useful in prolonged games.

22
This seems obvious by the wording of the Event - Estates specifically gain the abilities and types of the set aside card. Vineyard cares about the type of the card in question, so Inherited Estates should count for Vineyard.

This is not at all obvious to me when the wording in the FAQ says "for the rest of the game, all of your Estates have the abilities and types of the set aside card." Do inherited Estates become normal Estates at the end of the game when you're counting points, or do they stay inherited Estates?

23
Since there is no official ruling on such matters, obviously there is no answer...

Do inherited Estates count as Action cards at the end of the game when totaling Vineyards points?

You don't have to trash literally everything in your deck; it might even be beneficial to keep 2 stop cards so that you can draw most of your deck with an SP and then play an Ironmonger for +actions.
