Game Reports / Re: Mint Fail

Secret Chamber is also a good one. It barely gets noticed because it doesn't show +$. It's a guaranteed 4 coins when it comes up (and with 7 cards in your deck, that's a good bet). Grab a couple of silvers, and you're on your way.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is the point counter cheating?
« on: June 15, 2011, 03:10:36 pm »
In games without garden I dont really care for point counter or not. I only dislike this in garden games, where you can precisely plan on how to end on piles etc., which you cant do in a real game.

I believe that technically you could, if you count your deck. That is legal (I believe) and is even a requirement during play if anyone should ever actually use a Philosopher's Stone.

But, counting your deck out every few turns would get very annoying (one reason I never buy Philosopher's Stone), and I'd be pretty miffed if my opponent did that.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: First player advantage
« on: June 14, 2011, 02:09:07 pm »
That is intriguing. I've been trying to introduce a variant in my group where each person chooses whether he wants to open with 4/3 or 5/2. I argue that it cuts down on the first-turn luck since sometimes the 5/2 is horribly powerful or horribly horrible (especially if there are no 5s and 2s out there).

This "bidding to go first" is a very interesting proposition. One flaw I see with it is that Chapel/Silver would cost a total of $5, and it is stronger than most combinations that total up to $6 or $7. I'm sure there are other examples.

But, the idea that someone could open with two lesser cards (say, Haven and Embargo) in order to go first is something to think about.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Potential Puzzle: Buying every card

Do you have to buy them, or does gaining cards qualify?

Other Games / Re: What other games do you enjoy playing?

I have a lot of favorite board/card games. I often bring way more board games than we could possibly play in one sitting, mostly because I like to give the other players a choice. Whatever I bring I'm perfectly happy to play.

Some of my more commonly grabbed games are:
Dominion (natch), Thunderstone, Pirate's Cove, Red November, Thurns and Taxis, Race for the Galaxy, Robo Rally, Smallworld, Galaxy Trucker, Dungeon Keeper, Filthy Rich, Puerto Rico, Advanced Civilization, Kingsburg, San Juan, Power Grid, Factory Manager, Evo, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Revolution, Carcassonne, and Nanuk.  Also, if I own the game, I most likely own the expansions.

A friend of mine has some board games that I haven't picked up yet, such as Le Havre, Endeavor, Cuba, and Cargo Noir.

I do far less video games than I used to. I rarely buy games as soon as they come out (Portal 2 being an exception). I can usually wait until the hype dies down and scour Steam for some deals (I purchased GTA4 for under $10 during one crazy sale).

Rules Questions / Re: Black Market Deck
« on: June 13, 2011, 10:43:54 am »
I always play with the entirety of the remaining cards. One thing I like this about this method is that everything is fleeting in the Black Market. With over 100 cards available in Black Market, each option you receive will likely not be seen again.

Although, I'm intrigued by the idea of making a 15-card or 25-card deck. As the deck cycles through, you can plan for future cards. That actually adds a new level of strategy.

I'm leaning more toward a smaller Black Market deck now. Another good reason is that setup is easier. Right now, you'd have to put a token on all victory cards just in case someone buys a Trade Route. You'd also have to get the Prizes out in case someone buys a Tournament. And I can't even remember what the rules are for Young Witch, but I'm guessing you'd have to choose a Bane card. At least if you draw the Black Market deck, you can perform those setup steps as they are needed.

How would I choose a Black Market deck? I'd randomly draw the 15 (or 25 or whatever) cards. I'd cast out cards with a Potion cost unless there was already a Kingdom card with a Potion cost; I believe this was listed in the Alchemy rules, but it's been a while and I can't verify that at the moment. But, I doubt anyone is interested in buying a Potion in the hopes of getting a card or two from the Black Market deck. If that's the case, then Potion cards are just dead space in the Black Market deck.

Come to think of it, I've vetoed the use of Black Market more often than not, exactly because I wasn't in the mood to deal with it at the time. Perhaps if I restricted the Black Market deck to a smaller subset, I would not be so eager to choose the path of least resistance. I'll consider that when I play tonight.
