Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Create a card inspired by another game
« on: October 27, 2011, 03:21:30 pm »
Stratego
Action - Attack - $4

+2 Card
Reveal a Card from your hand.
Each other player must reveal the card on top of their deck.
Discard the card(s) with the highest cost.
Trash all other remaining revealed cards.

The formulation is bad I know, but I think you get it.
You can trash your curses and coppers or trash Provinces with your Colony.
With that card in play, that would be a very frustrating game.

I think to really drive this theme home, the Spy card is automatically defeated by any card except for Province (Colony), which is automatically defeats.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Cards That Combo With Tunnel Reaction
« on: October 26, 2011, 08:55:08 am »
What about opening Tunnel/Cellar?

I'd have to say this sounds more appealing. If Tunnel only cost $2, I'd say that a Mint/Cellar opening could be awesome.

But, in general, I do not buy a Mint in the first two hands unless there is a card that can actually help me get up to $3 or $4. Embargo and Secret Chamber are the only ones I'd consider pairing with Mint. And even Embargo has its risks.

Using Mint to trash 5 Coppers only to buy back one or two is probably the greater handicap.

Although, if Tunnel was out there, I'd gladly open Mint/Secret Chamber.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: IGG and coopersmith
« on: October 24, 2011, 04:15:02 pm »
I see potential for IGG to conflict with the Coppersmith. Sure, you'll plump up your deck with Coppers, but each IGG (and each Curse) increases the chance that Coppersmith will be a dead card.

I see what you mean that two piles will run out pretty quickly. So, focusing on winning the Duchy race is a good tactic. I'm not sure that Coppersmith will do it.

When you draw Coppersmith, you'll have some possible scenarios:
* You have 0 Copper in hand, in which case this is a dead card.
* You have 1 Copper in hand, in which case, Coppersmith nets you +$1.
* You have 2 Coppers in hand, in which case, Coppersmith nets you +$2.
* You have 3+ Coppers in hand, in which case, Coppersmith nets you at least +$3.

In all those cases, you could have easily replaced Coppersmith with a Silver. In fact, for the first two bullets, you are actually better off having a Silver. For the third bullet, you accomplished exactly the same thing. For the fourth bullet, you would not be hurting if you had a Silver, because then you'd have $5 instead of $6, which is enough for a Duchy.

In theory, the Coppersmith might help you get up to a Province, but with IGGs and Curses flooding your deck, that's not very likely.

Thief.
Thanks, this post was a laugh riot! The "actually playing with strategy" comment created an especially intense explosion of mirth, as if you imagine I look at CR stats and always blindly buy the card with the highest statistical win rate. That, and "Come play 6p games with my groupthink collective. You'll never survive having all your Coppers trashed for free!"

Although, that could be an interesting challenge. Possibly getting Thiefed five times a round? Okay, it probably averages out to twice a round, but if you don't have a Thief yourself, you could possibly find yourself in a treasureless game.

If that happens with Steward, Festival, and Minion, then I'd say bring it on and skip the Thief. If there are no action cards with money, I would actually be afraid of that game.

Sometimes, the real challenge is overcoming group think (especially if multiple people buy Saboteurs).

23:14 o_O: gg db

Somehow, I don't think that's the proper meaning of gg.

Quite often when I type "gg", that's exactly what I'm thinking.  :)

Whenever I see someone type an acronym, I just assume that it is something insulting or humiliating.

So, on Isotropic, I get offended when someone calls me a "Greedy Goat" or starts off a game by calling me "Halibut Face."

Okay, tnt*, but I might start doing that.

* That's Not True, or you could assume it means Totally Needless Troll.

Can't thief steal Harem, Bank, Hoard etc?  I don't play thief because I'm a girl  :P

Absolutely correct. It can be a tricky decision to buy Harems when a Thief is out there. Well, maybe not, depending on your opinion on Harems.

I did have some risky moments buying Harems when Pirate Ship was out. Miraculously, the Pirate Ship always missed my Harems. It would have been more worrisome if the other players were playing Thief, because that can shift 2 VP from me to someone else.

And now we have a Treasure – Reaction Card, so that should be very interesting.

Once, there was a person who attempted cybersex with me while playing.

Nothing like that has happened anytime recently.

Did he ask you to three-pile him?

(I have no idea what that means)

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is border village a trap?
« on: October 17, 2011, 11:25:09 am »
But if you buy BV for $4, you can only gain another card costing up to $3 or an action card that cost $5 originally. => No Duchy for instance.  :-\

Sorry, I meant that as implied, but I shouldn't have assumed that. I was thinking more for the early game when you have to choose between a Gold or a Border Village + $5 card. If you have Quarry in your deck, then your decisions are easier.

Though you both raise good points that you don't want to play Quarry in the late game if you plan on gaining Border Village + Duchy. Also hilarious.

5761
Actually, Gardens would combo with many of the Hinterlands cards we've seen so far.

I seem to recall that Donald said that Gardens was originally going to be in a later expansion but got moved to the base set because it went over really well.

Could this be the expansion that gave birth to Gardens?

I could see BV being a great pick with Quarry in play. This means you can buy it with only $4, so you are spared the dilemma of choosing between BV and Gold.

Just don't make a mistake and play three Quarries and then buy a Border Village. I've never seen it happen, but I'm sure it'd be hilarious.

Hmm, I had thought you could put 30 embargo tokens on something and use trader, but that actually only gets you 10 silvers, not 30.

I thought this too and actually went on Isotropic to test out what the implemented ruling is only to discover what you did.
That's a bug.

So the rule is that you may gain more Curses than the supply pile allows and Trader them one-by-one?

Well, the Curse pile wouldn't go down.

You  buy something with 30 tokens on it. You gain a Curse. Oops, get a Silver instead. Curse pile remains unchanged. Now, gain a Curse for the second token. Oops, get another Silver. Curse pile remains unchanged.

So, you gain 30 Silvers, but the Curse pile remains unchanged.

At least, that's how I read it.

5764
The next two are up: Nomad Camp and Fool's Gold.

Could some kind soul post the text of these cards? BGG is blocked where I am. Sad panda am I.

Also sad because I thought I posted this an hour ago, but I apparently did not click the right button. Dumb panda am I.

5765
Those are interesting. I wouldn't even say that Trader is a boring card. The end result (having a buttload of Silvers) may be boring, but the card play is kind of fascinating. Numerically, it's better than Salvager, since you can turn one Silver into three. Of course, the downside is that you're limited to just Silvers. I don't see a reason to play Trader on a Province unless you Golem-screwed yourself.

If it were the only reaction card in a curse-heavy deck, I'd buy it. After all, if you're going to clog your deck, it might as well be Silvers instead of Curses. It could be a really good counter to Mountebank. For non-Curses, the reaction is less desirable. If you have +Buy, you could buy a Copper and turn it into a Silver. This can make a Gardens deck stronger.  Other than that, I don't see that portion getting much use. It'd make you feel better when you can only afford a 2-cost card, but if that Trader was a Silver instead, your buying power would have been better.

The regular action is pretty conditional. I'd definitely consider buying it if I had other trashers in my deck. Trash-for-benefit, of course would be awesome (Forge three Silvers into a Platinum? Okay).

Also, you can annoy your opponent by revealing Trader after playing Bureaucrat.

Border Village is interesting. I'd have to see it in play, but the ability to gain just about any +Cards at the same time as this makes for a ready-made combo. I can see a lot of people falling for trap where they focus on this card instead of a Gold. As pointed out, Jesters and Smugglers can make this a pretty crazy card.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: What's missing?

In the movie, "This Is Spinal Tap," there is a scene where one of the band members has his volume knob go beyond 10 and to 11. The emphasis is that the interviewer asks why he can't just have 10 louder, and the guitarist keeps insisting that his amp is louder than all the others because theirs only go to 10, while his goes to 11. Great scene and great movie.

So, now, any time I talk about how great something is, I say that it goes to 11. This time, I can say it goes to Colony.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Need some Base-ic advice :)
« on: October 11, 2011, 02:49:15 pm »
The big disadvantage:  Your Action does not itself give you more Thieves or Gardens.  This is worrisome, particularly considering that you're dealing with a 4 card hand in any hand with Thief, and most of your Treasure is Copper, and you have Green cards.  Missing $4 to actually get more Thieves and Gardens seems like a real possibility.  I suspect that there's a much higher chance that you'll want to buy Silver with $3 than in any of the other notable Gardens variants.

Also, the probability of you hitting treasures in your opponents' decks starts going down as they buy greens.

It's an interesting proposition, but it may be too risky.

I find this amusing. This puzzle goes to Colony.

5769
Although, I think that Island might be stretching it. It's kind of technically true, but I don't think it fits like the others.

Argh! I thought I had it with Great Hall, but that wouldn't fit either.

And I don't think that Harvest counts, but that's kind of close.

I just want to say Familiar, as in, "I should be familiar enough with this topic to know what I'm talking about!"

5770
Argh! I think this is a puzzle I can solve, but I am not able to identify the missing card!

Though, if I think outside of that box, I would say library, lighthouse, and black market.

I'll try to think on the original puzzle some more.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why's it called a cantrip?
« on: October 06, 2011, 03:20:02 pm »
Well, yes, actually.  Cantrips are distinct from other action cards -- even other non-terminals -- for being harmlessly insertable into many different types of engines.  An awful lot of Dominion strategy discussion involves talk about how engines will choke on green, or curses, or treasures, etc.  But most engines don't choke at all on cantrips, which makes them good engine kickers and/or targets for three-pile endings.

Okay, the official word should be "lube," not so much because it's accurate but because the horrified looks from new players would just be priceless.

I'm being far too daft, I'm afraid.

It has also been a while since I first bought the original Dominion. Did it come with an advertising card that contains "gold"?

I'm clearly not going to get it on my own, so don't worry about pussyfooting around. I might need the sledgehammer upside the head.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Why's it called a cantrip?

I typically call them "zero-sum" cards because your hand count and action count remain the same after playing the card. I am sad that the term has never caught on.

Note that this means that while I consider Pearl Diver, Spy, and Familiar to be in this category, I do not consider Village or its ilk to be in the category. This also means that Wishing Well conditionally is zero sum.

It's at least faster than saying, "You lose nothing by buying this card, unless you have terminal actions that draw cards.

I agree that this is a cool puzzle. I don't think I would have solved it on my own.

But I'm vexed. Maybe I'm just out of it, but I cannot figure out which card has "Gold" in its title.

I'm sure I'll smack my forehead when someone points it out.
