I don't think Bank is best with the HP strategy.  You need as many HPs as possible and as few uniquely named cards as possible.  You can't afford a unique card with +buy, and it's not hard to acquire at least one copper, so it seems like a fancy Gold to me.

If you use Market and Bank, and leave Estates in the deck, and buy a Colony, you have 6 uniquely named cards in your deck, and that takes tons of Hunting Parties.

6452
Hmm.  Sounds promising.  You'd need trashing for the uniquely named Estates I think.  Steward seems best because you could use it for +2$ after it trashes Estates.  A Village of some sort could then let you use both the Steward and the Counting House.  Fishing Village works best because it can supply actions from outside of your deck, and it supplies $, which as mentioned is a problem.  That's 3$ from non-copper sources, so you could just buy 1 copper sometime whenever you hit 2$ or fail to get 5$ for Hunting Party when you already have the Steward and FV.  So..

Colony game.
Adventurer
Explorer
Hunting Party
Counting House
Bureacrat
Salvager
Chancellor
Oasis
Steward
Fishing Village

Might be better than mine.

EDIT: I forgot that Steward will cause you to trash a few coppers.  I added Salvager, open FV/Salvager, start trashing estates and buying copper as soon as possible, then get a Steward to trash Salvager and estates.

The QT already complies with your request, goober, that's what it says in the first post.

As a compromise, I'll restrict QT links to people with a reasonable amount of onsite presence.

6454
No, it's appropriate in this thread.  This is specifically about me creating a QT for spectators of this thread.

I'm doing so, goober's complaint is noted, I'm not going to discuss it further, but if others wish to do so they should do it here.

6455
It's common practice on mafiascum, and it rarely causes issues.  I have a high opinion of this community.

6456
The quicktopic is offsite, I don't see concern about it being semipublic.  A spectator could pm a link to a player, but I'd trust the player to delete it the way I trust the mafia not to pm eachother right now.

I think I did mention the rule about out of thread discussion, but I'll check the rules to see..

It's a rule, as of now.

EDIT: #5 needs interpretation to forbid it, but it seems clear enough.

6457
For those of you reading this thread and fighting urges to post in it, a spectator quicktopic is now available.  PM me for a link to a quicktopic where you can discuss the goings on of this game with fellow DSers and perhaps me.

6458
Fixed.

I advise everyone to read this thread, since I prefer that to half of you doing so and half of you not doing so:

Mafia I was discussed a bit more than I'd like to happen outside this thread in the future.

Feedback / Re: Mafia

As the guy modding the first mafia game..

1. I agree with the sentiment that Mafia shouldn't be in the default RSS feed.  I like logging off of isotropic, seeing something in the RSS feed about a card I just played with, and clicking a link.  Mafia removes that joy, and it doesn't really help anyone, the mafia threads will always be super active, you don't need an RSS to know that.

2. I haven't read this whole thread, but Ozle crossed the line a bit by saying "I'm not cracking jokes in my mafia game because I don't want to look suspicious".  If he made a comment strictly about site administration that'd be fine, but I deem that as game related.  It violates the principle of providing everyone equal access to game related information by keeping it in the proper thread.  I'm probably going to post a link to this thread in mafia I to "annex" it.

3. If the spectators want to discuss, I can just make them a quicktopic.  A quicktopic is an offsite forum thread that anyone can use, but only if they have the link.  I'll share the link with anyone who pms a request for it.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Dominion: Finance (Untested)
« on: May 16, 2012, 08:21:01 pm »
Compared to gold, Bounty is quite obviously weaker and in need of VP.  Might need more than it has, even.

If Bounty is quite a bit weaker, then it's in need of a buff of some sort. Why is that buff VP?
Oh. I was assuming it was just the laziest/easiest buff you can give a card to any varying degree.

Let's add a VP point to Explorer.

At 5$ +2 actions or + 3 cards is too weak, at 4$ it's too strong.  VP time.

If Counting House looks remotely useful in a Kingdom, I take the auto loss and try to make it worse.

"Hey this card has the word copper written on it" isn't actually Counting House's key synergy.  The key to Counting House is to draw it right before the reshuffle, when your discard is as large as possible.

The most forced way to do this is Chancellor.
Colony game, of course.
Mandarin
Ghost Ship
Inn
Counting House
Worker's Village
Salvager
Warehouse
Chancellor
Hamlet
Embargo

I could improve that, but I think in a Colony game you won't win that set without Counting House.  If you choose not to play the Counting House strategy, the Counting House player can Embargo you back to the Dark Ages when you buy a Plat.

Once you buy 4 coppers off Salvagers and Hamlets, put Counting House and Chancellor in your deck, you can buy Inns that guarantee Colonies.

Mandarin is for our theoretical perfect player who will know when he's about to trigger a reshuffle while his Counting House is in the last two cards, so he plays Embargo and buys a Mandarin with three coppers to guarantee a Colony next turn instead of a fail.

WW has the deck control idea with the Haven, I don't have room for it in mine with 2 2s though.

I think the remaining question is whether Horde is better or worse than Catch.

Uh, Horde is definitely better unless you design a kingdom deliberately to make Cache better.

Hoard is kind of like Cache.  Cache gives you three cards with a mean value of 1.66 repeating.  So a 5$ Silver would actually have more value, but the Cache has 3 times as much presence in your deck.  And then the $ is actually concentrated instead of diluted, which is actually a good thing.

Buying a Province with a Hoard gives you two cards with a mean value of 1.5$.  It's unwise to compare that directly to gold, there is opportunity cost in obtaining the Hoard, versus Gold lacking 6 VP and all that.  But the idea is the same, the purchase has twice as much presence in you deck as one piece treasure does.  But then that value is actually lumped into one of the two cards, which is a good thing.

So Cache and Hoard are both stronger in becursed decks, which have a low mean value and a higher card count, which requires the "extra presence" in your deck.

At least that's how I think of it.

I always think of Hoard as a reverse Cache.

When your buying Cache you are trying to build up the money in your deck in an effort to reach provinces, but it dilutes your deck of course.

However, when you are using Horde you are mitigating the province buy you would have bought earlier, so that green in your deck (that you had planned to buy anyway) has a bit more value as you got a gold with it.
It's reversed in the goals with respect to VP, yes.

Robz8888 has a Spice Merchant in his kingdom.  Strangely though, he just pays the guy to stop selling spices and chop wood in his backyard.

Cantrip is actually older than MtG, I remember on an MtG forum someone said it comes from D&D.

If the mafia fails to pm, the choice of who carries out the kill will be randomized.

Lynched and nightkilled players will have their alignments and roles revealed.

You can post anything during "twilight" after the lynch but before I officialize it.  Claiming your role and claiming results is not "special posting" and is still allowed.
In case it wasn't clear, all players, not just the lynched player, can speak during twilight.

On that note, you are not to post anything at all once you are dead, not even "Bah go town" or "Bah".

6469
Deadline is May 23rd.  The roles reshuffled on May 13th, and I stipulated a 10 day deadline in the rules.

6470
Never modding again.

From this post, everyone has three strikes on editting posts accidentally, possibly with an extra strike for subsequent days.
If you use all your strikes, I'll have to kill you.

I don't like to be harsh, but I don't think it's that hard.

(flavor posts will use the most recent poster.)
Robz got lost in his gardeny Kingdom as he often does, and found himself between two of his Estates, each with a Garden out front.  Just as he was about to despair, he spied a Haggler in the ally between the Hedges.
"Hello, my subject, I'd like to buy a Cellar; have it built under one of my Estates here."
"My liege, if I sell you a Cellar, I'm going to have to give you a Copper too, you understand?"
Robz cracked a smile.  "Yes.  That's the idea."

Rules Questions / Peddler + Farmland

I play a Chancellor and two Golds, leaving a Peddler in my hand.  I buy a Farmland.  Do I get a Province, or squat?
