When I was in the 7th grade, I had a close friend in the 8th grade. He was a total socialite. I actually have little clue why he liked me so much, because I was rather shy, and he wasn't much of a nerd. We played some Halo sometimes, but he liked me before that, so I don't know. His name was Toby.
Toby realized I was shy and didn't have many friends, so he introduced me to all his friends in the 8th grade. Then he decided I needed a nickname, so he called me "Pop", which he explained stood for "The most popular 7th grader". Actually, not so different in spirit from the song "Popular" from the Broadway show Wicked. Anyways, Clay added an s, and the s stuck. All of my friends from the 8th grade called me Pops, most of them didn't even know my real name.
When I sat down to make an aol instant messenger later that year, I decided I wanted it to be pops, because I would be IMing my 8th grade friends, and using my nickname was cool. Pops was, of course, taken. I didn't want to append numbers, I hate appending numbers to a username, it looks ugly and sucks. So added "ofctown", because I lived in Columbus, Mississippi.
Then I used that name a couple times for other things, then eventually I decided to maintain the name at all times to have a continuous internet identity. People on smashboards might know me from mafiascum, etc.
Nowadays I think the name looks a little bit uglyish, but the good thing is that it is very unique, no one else is likely to use the same username without malicious intent to impersonate me.
