Actually, I think the probability is slightly higher than 1/(number of two- or three-cost cards), because of the possibility of the Young Witch showing up in the Black Market deck.

My answer to this situation tends to be "Trash a Copper, buy another Salvager". I know I've trashed Silver for Gold before, though. Either way, when I'm opening Salvager I'm usually not looking for drawing power...

(Sample game, which coincidentally had Caravan and Lab available... though I did already have a Gold before this hand came up. I'm pretty sure this is the fastest game I've ever played, barring resignations/disconnects.)

There seems to be a bug in counting Fairgrounds points; councilroom is giving me 7 for each in this game. (Same problem here, for another example; allfail's Fairgrounds are counted as 11.)

Here's a game from yesterday that is a little different from the others posted... no alternate victory cards (though I did have a comeback with Fairgrounds recently as well), no strong attacks to cripple the opponent (the crippling was already done to me, in the form of 7 Curses from Sea Hag), no King's Court... not even a +Buy! My opponent actually questioned on the last turn why I wasn't just trashing my Mining Villages to get to 8 quickly, until I reminded him that he was still ahead on Duchies, and I had Remake... Not an engine I would have even tried if not for the 5/2 split putting me behind from the start.

(And actually, you don't need to trash to keep the engine going; you can just buy more Regroups on turns you don't make it to 8. As long as you draw 4 Regroups before your hand is full of Chapel/green, you are guaranteed a Province.)

(Looks like best case you could get down to the 6 card deck after 6 turns... which means 3 Provinces in 9 turns, 4 in 11, and a 4-3 split turn 13 - though of course there's a chance of a 5th Province on turn 12.)

Sure, a Chapelled deck means it's easier to chain those Regroups together, but the discard requirement puts a limit on how much you can do that.

You can get around the limit for a very small deck (or a deck that can draw itself before playing the Regroups), because the victory card you discarded for one Regroup will be drawn again by the next.

If you get your deck down to four of these, a Chapel, and a green card, you're guaranteed Province buys until you hit four green cards, at which point you can alternate between trashing your worst green card and buying another Province. Whether or not that's game-winning depends on how fast you can get your deck to that point, and what your opponent is doing.

DG's post reminded me of this recent game, in which I finished off the Ironworks pile with a Watchtower in hand, then drew those Ironworks and finished off the Watchtowers as well, grabbing an Estate for the 1-0 win.

This way the penalty is attached to using the card in its strong form, but you can also play the card in its weak form without penalty.

Combining these ideas, you could have a card like:

[Benefit]
Gain a Curse. If you do, [Extra Benefit].
