Game Reports / Re: Another Scrying Pool - Looter Board
« on: January 28, 2016, 06:42:14 pm »
Yup.

Potion/Steward opening is great, but you really want the second Steward on turn 5 to thin.

The Market Square->Gold plan slows your development and leaves you with gold that leads to a fatter deck and extra cards that gum up scrying pool.

The target endgame payload here is bandit camp with some +buy, since you can pick it up with scrying pool, draw deck, then play a bunch of bandit camps and draw the spoils.

Also, despite your opponent's weird marauder/market square opening, they quickly transitioned into potion/steward as well, and they had much, much better draws

Dominion Articles / Re: End Game Strategy: A case study
« on: January 25, 2016, 02:24:52 pm »
I was going to write an article on endgame play, but it looks like Nate has done an excellent job with this one. I'll add a few points on building up:

Setting up the endgame:
-Additional buys/coins/gains on the final turns open up additional opportunities for forced wins and pile outs
-Big engines provide the most endgame control, particularly when alt-VP and attacks are involved
-Maximizing coins/buys in on an engine board often means trashing->drawing deck->growing exponentially
-Check if you can win. See how your opponent plans to win. Then look for a way to safety threaten a win next turn.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Coin of the Realm
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:41:45 am »
Coin of the realm is one of the better villages. It gives a total of +2 actions (double a village), only costs 2, and provides a coin as well.
-In a money-focused deck, having a coin of the realm on the mat is an insurance policy against action collision.
-In a draw-your deck engine, you play COTR every other turn, so it functions much like a village
-The tavern mat mechanics require planning. Coin of the realm can't be called until the turn after you play it, so balance actions/coins accordingly.

Nice design, bravo!

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Amulet
« on: January 05, 2016, 05:10:18 pm »
Steward's much better in engines, since it trashes faster and then turns into coins/cards.

Amulet does shine in decks that actively want silver. It's one of the premier duke/duchy enablers.

Not a huge fan of fortune teller here, as it can collide with young witch and doesn't junk.

There are a couple of possible plans here. The first low economy route is young witch+hamlet/watchtower. Hamlet + Watchtower combine nicely as a draw engine.

Another route is to rush hunting parties and king's courts with a silver/X opening. Potentially powerful, but also dependent on shuffle luck for lining up king's courts.

Engine is best here, with the goal of king's courting and junking as much as possible.

Greening here is risky, since it weakens the engine and opens up vulnerabilities to rabble and more junking.

I'd continue building until the piles get low or I can hit colony + engine components.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Co0kieL0rd's other cards

The new wording looks great! Playing an action from your opponents deck is balanced at 4 and leads to interesting interactions

King's courting an opposing action is quite strong at 4 cost. Might be correct to skip actions entirely on boards with Regal Decree.

Each crate that you kill is worth gives you a five mana discount for just 1 in discover cost. Warlock is great at picking up crates and denying your opponents, so it's likely just the class.

Help! / Re: Did I play this right? (Market Square / Apprentice)
« on: December 14, 2015, 06:48:02 am »
Looking at the board, the first question I like to ask is what's the most powerful thing going on? Apprentice/Market Square is the most powerful thing going on in the late game. Butcher can get rid of estates and upgrade gold into provinces and ambassador is great at trashing copper and junking.

What's the best way to use these cards? I like opening Butcher/Hamlet, followed by an ambassador to stay thin, moving into apprentice/market square after.

I'm referring to what you're generally trying to do on a board, although sometimes you might deviate.

For example, a board might favor engine, but if you open 5-2, you might consider going for vault big money.

Late to the party, but:

From game logs, I like to look at:
1) What's the most powerful strategy on the board? Is there a powerful engine? Is there alt-VP or an attack to punish non-engine decks?
2) What's the baseline strategy for the board? How much trashing do you want? How much do you build before greening? Playing the board a couple of times helps with this
3) What variations from the baseline strategy are needed? (openings, draws, piles, points, etc.)

Board 1: There's no attack to punish BM, so Vault/Nobles/Counterfeit BM is going to be faster than native village + nobles
Board 2: Ambassador war, whoever wins has complete control
Board 3: Scrying pool + mass actions -> megaturn board. You want to get thin, so I like double masquerade
Board 4: Depending on how the game play out, you can threaten monument point tokens, a bridge megaturn, or both. Vault tunnel is quite strong. You might not have time for universities
