Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: June 21, 2011, 11:15:48 am »
I feel like the issue of people not knowing about the resign button could be resolved by having the "end turn" button read "end turn/resign" before you've played anything on your turn.  That would be something for DougZ to do though, and I don't know if he's taking requests.

(Of course, the actual resign button would still need to appear separately to not kill misclicks.)

(And if people read the FAQ, they'd know, but people don't really do that any more, do they?)

And then if you are going to make a complicated model, why not just solve Dominion?
https://github.com/rspeer/golem

Because Dominion is, at best, NP-Hard.  :P

I think you're underestimating the complexity of Dominion.

In his last turn, my opponent:

(1) KC's a Possession
(2) Uses my Tactician, then:

— Kirian's turn (possessed by Reiss)
(Kirian reshuffles.)
Kirian draws 5 cards and gets +1 action and +1 buy from the Tactician.
Kirian plays a Laboratory.
... drawing 2 cards and getting +1 action.
Kirian plays a Laboratory.

Kirian plays an Ambassador.
  ... Kirian reveals a Province.
... returning it to the supply.
  ... Reiss gains a Province.
Kirian plays a Gold, a Silver, a Potion, and 3 Coppers.
Kirian buys a Province.
  ... Reiss gains the Province.
(Kirian draws: an Estate, an Ironworks, a Laboratory, a Province, and an Ambassador.)

Kirian plays a King's Court.

That's right, I went from 5 Provinces up to 4 Provinces down.  Well played, Reiss...

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Help: Ideas for a four player game
« on: June 19, 2011, 06:06:23 pm »
Deal each player four randomizer cards.  Each player picks two of those.  The last two come off the top of the randomizer deck.  Strongly recommended.

As the best player in my group, I will often veto cards that I know (but my friends don't realize) will lead to a long, unhappy game.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Decline of civility on isotropic?
« on: June 19, 2011, 05:58:05 pm »
I've gotta throw my hat in with guided, theory and MMM.  Not saying anything during a match really does make one uncivil.  It doesn't matter that "gl hf" is basically similar to "hello."  If you don't want your opponent to have fun or have good luck, then at least say "Hi!"

This is basic civility in all of gaming--not just online stuff, but handshakes aren't exactly possible online.  Say hello, say gl hf, say what you like, but for goodness' sake acknowledge that you and your opponent are both humans.  Or, put another way:  I dislike playing against players who wouldn't pass a Turing test based on our game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Is the point counter cheating?
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:15:39 pm »
How would you tell if your opponent is using the point counter? The built-in one doesn't give any indication of when you're looking at it, and the browser extension shows the current point count on the screen to the player running it. (!status is there so the other player can see it.)

The addon, as you mention, gives you the choice to use !status if your opponent is running it.  (It can also have !disable but the addon author allowed that option to be disabled, which is one of the annoyances alluded to above.)  The built-in counter is right on the info page (last line on each player's status), and if you're not checking the info page for other things several times a game, then you're not playing well.

Hrm, yeah, actually posting a link would have been a good idea!  The main link is actually right here.

I recommend Stoc's second link rather than his first, though.  Just for the lulz, as it were.

As many people here know, there is a Dominion league on BGG, played on Isotropic.  Alas, it's been a bit slower than usual lately, for reasons no one's really entirely certain of, though part of it is that fewer players means fewer chances to match two players, which means fewer people qualify, which means fewer people want to play... well, you get the idea.

I figure most of the people who would read this board would be at least somewhat interested in league play.  Some people left the league and focused more on the ladder, but the ladder isn't the best indicator of actual player strength, because it can be (barely) gamed.

So, who's going to come join/rejoin?

Hey, because, what the hell:

http://dominion.isotropic.org/gamelog/201106/13/game-20110613-235200-a00fe105.html

1200 points in the final round.  Forgot to buy potions in the previous rounds, though, so I could have had another 130 or so (extra green cards = fewer points for Vineyards).

Because every card other than KC and TR had buys available, I don't think there was any way not to have the maximum number of buys with these cards (92).  Someone else can probably prove me wrong.  Anyway, 1200 is the number to beat (with, of course, ridiculous amounts of setup and no competition).  Have fun!

You actually need a very full black market so that you don't run out of stuff to buy. With as many buys as you're talking about, you will be able to run the money piles out.

Nah.  In a Colony game you have 32 VP cards and 136 Treasure cards.  You'll have over 100 buys, but not that many over 100.

Quote
And you should have gardens and vineyards and fairgrounds as piles, as they're going to be worth ridiculously high amounts of points once you buy all that stuff.

With about 200 cards in the final deck, each Garden is worth 20 points--160 total.  Meanwhile 9 extra buys is worth 90 points total... so yes, you're probably right, there.  Fairgrounds is tougher, you'd need not just Black Market (which doesn't give extra buys at the end) but you'd need 60 unique cards to get above the 90 total points from the extra buys.  Probably not worth it.

On the other hand, Vineyards would be 30 points each, so definitely worth having in there.

That would make for an interesting puzzle for the site: what's the single highest point turn? Deck can be made up of anything as long as it's legal (< 3 piles gone).

Anything as long as it's legal?  Let's see...

10 Goons
10 GMs
9 Worker's Village
9 Cities
9 Wharves
9 King's Courts
9 Throne Rooms
9 Bridges
9 Festivals
9 Trade Routes

The last is for trashing during the game and probably won't be able to be used for more than a couple +Buys at the end, so we'll ignore the +Buys from TR.  I won't do the calculations here but you'll have well over 100 Buys, 10 Goons cards out, and everything will cost $0.  So: 8*(10+6+3+1)+1000 = 1160, and almost certainly more; not sure how many buys we can actually squeeze out of there.

I think the Chancellor effect of HP is further underrated.  Near the start of the game, HP can act like a partial chancellor that leaves you an action to play and drew two cards.  That's gigantic if you can get it in the first shuffle, and still great if you wait until the second shuffle.  Only a few 5s overpower it early--the attacks, mainly, Vault with GM available, possibly a couple others.

And to RR:  yeah, I just got outplayed in a HP/Village/Goons game.  Boloni was hitting 4 or 5 Goons almost every turn the last couple turns.  Amazing.

I do not play SC2, and I do not think rrenaud does either.  I took BW pretty seriously ... stayed up and watched Korean pro games, gamed on PGT and WGT and ICCUP.  Certainly I don't have time to do any of that any more.

I actually like watching SC2 replays a lot, much more entertaining that watching... well, choose any sport, frankly.  The parallels between SC and Dominion are pretty striking, though.

I'm pretty sure someone somewhere posted a 1000-ish point total score.  I might be a bit off though.

Of course, this only works for n mod 5 = 0, which leaves out a heck of a lot of possibilities.

Teproc:  the exclamation points in the formula represent the factorial function.  That's the product of all whole numbers from the number down; so, for 5, it's 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120.  Because the way the OP has this set up results in huge factorials (15! has 13 digits), it helps to break it down and cancel things out a bit.  For theory's question, t = 2, n = 15, we have:

n/5 = 3
5t = 25

The first factorial on top is 3!, and the first on the bottom is 1!.  Divide those and you get 3 × 2 = 6
The second factorial on top is 13!, and the second on the bottom, n!, is 15!.  Divide them, and you get 15 × 14 = 210 (on the bottom).

Simplified, then, the fraction is (6 × 25)/(210) = 0.714

Therefore, p (the chance of getting 2 Maps this cycle) is 0.286, or about 29%.

I met rrenaud on TeamLiquid, back when it was a Brood War site rather than a SC2 site.

I have to admit, that's not what I would have expected to hear on this forum. :)  Either of you play SC2?  (I don't have time to practice at SC and so mostly stay away from it except for the campaigns.)

Any other WOW players out there?  I also play Civ, Minecraft, and a couple others.  Oh, board games?  Almost anything except Catan.  Pandemic is a perennial favorite, as is Power Grid.
