General Discussion / Re: Programming

Does PHP count as a programming language?  If so, then I was a freelance programmer for many years in PHP/mySQL, but at this point it's all hobby work.  If that doesn't count, then... I guess I used to program in BASIC, does that count?

3 early Golds followed by 2 early Provinces.  Overall, they all get 6-7 Provinces quite quickly, followed by long sequences of 7s until you get the last.

Amusingly, only one of those hits the worst-case scenario of not buying Gold until Turn 9.  Any way to pull those out for, say, T > 35, and see if that occurs in more cases?  Any cases where T[gold] < 9 are automatically not worst-case.

(Unless someone could explain why getting the first Gold at 9 is better than getting it at 8.)

I think a good starting point would be to run a bot with simple buy rules for a ton of simulations and go from there.

The thing is, a bot won't find the worst-case scenario here.  You have to apply the worst possible shuffle luck in order to delay the first Province buy, but a bot can't be programmed to create "worst possible shuffle luck."  And as long as the average card value is under 7/5, you should be able to get through an entire shuffle without hitting $8.

Puzzles and Challenges / Something is missing yet again
« on: September 16, 2012, 08:30:21 pm »
Three cards are missing from the following list.

Alchemist
Armory
Cellar
Council Room
Count
Cultist
Duchess
Embargo
Festival
Forager
Ghost Ship
Great Hall
Haven
Herbalist
Hermit
Lighthouse
Market Square
Moat
Native Village
Oasis
Saboteur
Storeroom
Torturer
Treasure Map
Vagrant
Vault
Woodcutter
Worker's Village

There are also three honorable mentions, for two different reasons.  One of them is Quarry.  For bonus points, find the other two.

Hint: I hate the puzzles where all that matters is something in the name of the card.  The name is completely meaningless here.

Edit:  I completely forgot to look through the Dark Ages cards!  They've been added--eight of them!  None have been left out, so there are still only three cards missing.

This probably requires you to get the average worth of cards in your deck over the magical 5/8 = 1.6, since otherwise you can probably go through a shuffle with all $7 hands. Once you are over 1.6, you are guaranteed at least one Province during one time through your deck. Of course, with worst shuffle luck your hand might be 5 Golds, and the rest of your hands being awful. So, it might end up being only one Province per shuffle with worst shuffle luck.

In addition, every Province buy decreases the average card strength.  The question becomes:  is it going to be faster to exceed that average, or to hit that average, buy a Province, buy a Gold, etc.?

The Province will decrease average value, but all your subpar hands during that shuffle will probably be used to buy more Silver, which should balance out or even push it in your favour when you reshuffle... right?

Actually, you would only want to buy just enough Silver/Gold to bring you back across that threshold, lest you increase the number of turns between shuffles unnecessarily.

I'm thinking that we're looking at N = 40 at least here.

Have only KC-KC-Moat-Moat-Moat?  But I guess that fails with Masq...

That doesn't ensure you get it every turn.

If those are the only five cards in your deck, it does.  But then it's susceptible to Masq, as mentioned.

Clarification:  Do they need to be the same three physical cards, or just the same three terminal actions?

Getting all Provinces with pure BM with worst-case shuffling luck sounds very unpleasant. So many 5's and 7's. :P

Indeed, just determining worst-case shuffling is going to be a PITA.  With worst-case shuffling I would guess we can put off the first Gold by until at least T8 or T9, and delay the first $8 until probably T16 or later.  Let's see:

Open 2/5 for Silver/-
T3: SCCCE, buy Silver
T4: CCCCE, buy Silver
T5: E|SCCE, buy Silver (Deck is 2S, 5C, E)
T6: SCCCE, buy Silver
T7: SCCE|C, buy Silver (Deck is 4S, 4C, 2E)
T8: SCCCE, buy Silver
T9: SSSCE, buy Gold

Can anyone do worse?

Dominion: Dark Ages Previews / Re: Procession/Pillage ???
« on: September 15, 2012, 08:55:05 pm »
Procession-Pillage should work the same as Procession-Feast.  The parts of Feast and Pillage after "Trash this card" are not dependent on that portion (contrast with Trading Post, with its "if you do" clause).  Nor is the last part of Procession dependent on "trash this card."  So for this case, you do the following:  Trash the Pillage; attack once, gain 2 Spoils; attack again (if possible), gain 2 Spoils; gain an Action card with cost $6.

I'm not positive about Counterfeit/Spoils, because Spoils has a "when you play this" clause.  I'm uncertain what the lose-track rule says about this one.

Anyone want to set this up as a solo challenge for Dominion?

I'm really excited for the card I submitted, which means it sucks and everyone will hate it.

Does it combo with Scout?

Grats to eHalcyon again!  I was hopeful about mine, but I'll take the #3 slot as well.  I don't know how many people looked at it and said "Oh hey, it's a high-power one-shot Steward that also works vs. Swindler, etc."

I definitely liked Mountain Pass, and I quite like the name as well.  Good job on a fourth card!

Question for everyone: in YN vs. blueblimp game 1, would you rather open Amb/Amb, Amb/Silver, or Amb/Feast?

Ambassador/warehouse. This isn't without some problems though. You will need to tailor your deck development to the play of your opponent and it's pretty hard to predict the exact steps needed to get that grand market monster deck started.

At first I was inclined to agree with DG, but now I think I want to try to hit $5 earlier.

I'm tempted by double tact, inn, amb, vault instead of the wharves route you're taking here.
It will be worse in the end (can't profit from platinum) but stronger at the start (easier Grand Markets).
Strong starts tend to be more important. Maybe I can even transverge into a wharf strategy from there using salvagers.

That means I need three cards costing $5 before my deck is flooded with crap by an opponent hitting ambassador heavy with ambassador/warehouse.
I think it's doable. Getting the first Tactician will somehat provide for the rest. I don't need a really small deck, because tact+vault can handle quite some coppers/estates.

So now my plan would be to start Silver/Ambassador, and the next round hope for Tactician/-, or maybe Warehouse/Salvager if I don't hit $5.

Really tricky question though, and if this was a predesigned kingdom for a tournament I'd want to playtest this set a lot.

Seems like with Tact/Vault here, if you've got all that crap, you're going to need at least three Tacticians, and then you're still not going to hit double-Tact every time through.  Especially if your opponent doubles up on Ambassadors and keeps sending you coppers through the whole game.

And if you really need that first $5, wouldn't grabbing a Feast be better?  Almost as though YN's opening would be best for making that happen (though pulling the Feast on T5 is bad luck).

OK, I lied, they aren't all gone:

Congrats to blueblimp!

In that first game, I'd be tempted to try Amb/Warehouse into Amb/Silver on 3/4/5.  Anything to find that Amb a second time early on... it's not like you care that you only have three cards in hand at that point.

Also since I didn't say it, congrats to Qvist for the Bracket C win!
