The prettiness is a plus!  Even lifelong gamers like me LIKE pretty, elegant interfaces.  I'm not saying Goko is elegant, but it is pretty.  They get points for it.

I dunno... I think I prefer elegant to pretty.  But then I'm a form-before-function guy.

Life would be better in general if they could fit more than the 10 cards on the screen.

Crazy talk!  There's absolutely no way you can fit that many cards on the screen all at once...

Don't ask how many times I've been to this website just so that I can be somewhat intelligent about DA.

Do you honestly think Donald X hasn't considered something like this?  Do you honestly think that he would have entered into this agreement without being fully  aware of Goko's capabilities?  Do you honestly think this idea has not be discussed dozens of times in this very forum?
i agree with the overall sentiment wero, but i think you need to take it easy. it was the users first post, and i think that a hostile response reflects badly on the forum at large. just because this sort of idea is old news for regulars here doesn't mean it's something that everyone out there has thought of.

I think we've had enough users whose first (and often only) post is a non-constructive criticism of Goko that "trolling" is no longer too strong a word.

I don't think Goko is that bad, but it just needs a lot of work. Still, in this light it's even more amazing how DougZ programmed Iso on his own and got 99.9% of the rules right on the first try.
The "Dougminion bug reports / requests" thread in the playtest forums has ~580 posts.

That surprises me exactly not at all.  The difference is that DougZ actually fixed those bugs.  Meanwhile, we have two-month-old bugs still haunting Goko...

I have no problem with rules, if they were upfront. If there was somewhere that said cursing is not acceptable on the forum I wouldn't have posted that. As far as I know there's nothing like that.
I have contested this exact subject of argument with theory in the past through a series of PM's, and I have even sited other forums that have a list of either rules or guidelines for both the users to follow when posting and the moderators to follow when moderating. Unfortunately,  I see no change of this in the near future.

"Don't be a dick."

There's your rule.

Rules Questions / Re: Counterfeit and Horn of Plenty
« on: December 10, 2012, 05:28:59 pm »
I don't think Counterfeit combos well with HoP, unless you just want it for Copper trashing or to bump up HoP's worth.  You don't want to counterfiet your horns while building up because then the horn is gone and you can't use it to build up any more.  And since the $5 price tag puts them in competition with each other, you're probably better off getting more HoPs.

But it might be useful if the Copper trashing is important for you to draw 8 unique cards together.

I think the point is that it combos well in the endgame, when you were planning to trash the HOPs anyway.

I admit my main thought is "this community was actually nicer without WW".

That... may be the weirdest thing I've heard about this community lately.  Like, how does that even work?

It's Margrave

"Mar" meaning sea, at least in Spanish, and "Grave" representing Death

Don't worry, I love terrible puns.

Oh wow.  That... is awful.  And awesome.

Alright this already sounds ridiculous.  No wonder the thread hasn't gotten going yet.

I know, it's about as believable as the opening to a Penthouse Forum letter.

« on: December 07, 2012, 09:29:49 pm »
After being (extremely minorly) upset, I thought about my Iso ranking.  Man, I used to be level 32, but I haven't played very much for a while, so my rating plummeted... obviously I was underseeded.  Right?

Or, maybe, just maybe, not playing nearly as much as before meant I'm not nearly as good a player as I was!  (Which wasn't all that amazing to begin with.)

Dominion: Guilds Previews / Re: First small Guilds Spoiler

Unless Donald X. radically renamed every card in the set, I think you are reading a little too much into this :)

As in, these literally are placeholder names, and nothing to do with the final names?  It does seem odd that they would all be two-word names.

It also seems crazy that every single card would end in "guild."

2012 / Re: Witch Division: Bracket and Results
« on: December 07, 2012, 10:39:14 am »
I was delighted to win the right to lose gloriously in round 2.

Ha!  True enough, and well-fought.  Some quick thoughts:

Game 1: This was just awful for both of us!  Such a slog.

Game 2: The more I look at this, the more I think TP was the right move.  I nearly grabbed it on T1, then thought, no, wait, HP stack will be faster, and with Hoard there's no need for a terminal.  I think taking the Province on T8(?) would have been a better move, but would have slowed me down enough for you to catch that up.

Game 3: Forge was the key here.  Being able to pull off the double-Duchy meant I went from a winning battle to a losing battle in one turn.

Game 4: The T5 Potion was bad, but it was actually Turn 12 that was worse.  Not only did having Potion on the very bottom deny me buying a fifth Alchemist, it also disrupted my stack.  If Potion had been two cards earlier, this game would have ended differently, but such is Dominion!  I'm thinking Loan would have boosted either of us.

Game 5: I think the Baron/SR strategy here was just far more powerful than you thought--in fact I went for it specifically because it was "immune" to shuffle luck.  My T3 Baron doesn't connect, but that actually doesn't matter; SR wants the extra Estate anyway, and it makes Baron collision that much more likely.  I was, however, quite lucky to get four SRs in two turns.

Game 6: I'm wondering if I should have gone ahead and taken Thief with that first BM play... but not getting a Witch in the second shuffle, as you say, was the real key problem.  Perhaps half my play here was desperation moves.

Great series!  I was out of practice, but this was a good set of games.

I'm always hacking my shuffle, duh. I type !bettershuffle and my cards just rearrange themselves the way I want.

I assumed you just used Scout to put the cards in the "right" order each turn.

Are Kyrion (#114) Kirian (#119) the same person or is it just a mad coincidence that two players with such similar names are so similarly ranked?

I am definitely not Kyrion, which I assume is a charged Kyr.

The action buttons still in the same place as the 'end turn' button though. It was never good design to put them in the same place. Nobody seemed to notice however since the button text was the obvious fault.

I have a similar issue in Isotropic, when I'm trying to click the info button on the other player's turn, and it becomes my turn and the info button becomes the 'end turn' button.

Agreed 100 fold. If Isotropic was still being updated and Goko wasn't imminent (within the next decade), I'd make hard requests for the buttons to stay put. It looks like it was requested over a year ago here, and I posted about this in April here.

As always, the difference being that Goko already has its hand out for your wallet, and Dougz runs isotropic in his spare time, in a cave, with a box of scraps.

General Discussion / Re: Logica Armchair Treasure Hunt!
« on: December 04, 2012, 07:58:21 pm »
I participated, to a good extent, in I Love Bees (alas all the phone stuff was scheduled during weekly meetings I couldn't miss, sigh), and quite enjoyed reading about The Beast (the hunt associated with the movie A.I.).

However, my December is already horribly booked; spending time treasure hunting isn't in the cards, alas.  Perhaps next year... I bet if you had your own team of f.DS hunters, you could do well!

This used to have a data set of size 1.2 million with player names, winning margin, and the kingdom supply.

http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=20.msg438#msg438

The dataset link isn't going to work now, but I can find some other place to put the data if you'd actually use it.

How big is the dataset?  If it's <~30MB, I can host it.

Since I'm not seeing the word logistic in there, are you willing to explain how OD/LOD is related to the logistic function?  I did linkage analysis for about a year and a half and always simply treated it as a Bayesian probability analysis.  (Granted, the word Bayesian isn't in that article either, which makes me less than impressed with that WP article).

Without clicking the link:
It's still Bayesian, you just have different underlying distributions in your model.

OK... I think I see what it is.  Doing genetics work I didn't really think of there being a "distribution" per se.  I guess the distribution is a distribution of [recombination frequency](x, y) over all pairs (x, y)?  But I can only imagine that would be exponentially distributed.

In case you ever wondered what the other side looked like when you were a student.  Don't worry, the tables are turned soon enough when I'm stuck grading while they're off on winter break already.

Totally true.
