Forum Games / Re: Awaclus and the Finnish Championship
« on: October 18, 2018, 11:45:51 pm »
So:

(1) There's *championship* Mafia?  I don't even know how to feel about this revelation.

(2) We sent a representative to a Mafia championship?  Like an official f.DS person to represent us?  I'm entirely uninvolved in the Mafia community here because social deduction games cause me literal physical pain, but still I feel like... what the hell?

(3) Awaclus is a bit of a dick, and everyone on this forum (and likely that one!) knows this.

(4) Awaclus doesn't seem to have actually broken any rules over at their forum, and as we all know, breaking the spirit of the rules while adhering to their letter is a dick move that nonetheless fits the rules.  (Yet another reason I hate social deduction games, have you ever had to have an argument about the "spirit" of the rules in Dominion?  No, of course not.  Cue Walter Sobchak: "This is not 'Nam, this is bowling, there are *rules*.")

(5) Isn't this just the same as resigning?  The penalty for resigning is that you lose.  Which seems to have happened!

(6) Why did someone email theory about this?  Did Awaclus goad them into it or something?

(7) Why did I even involve myself in this conversation? (This is likely unanswerable.)

Summary: Awaclus is a bit of a dick, he did something apparently within the rules that might or might not have been a dick move, and he lost the game.  I mean, I'm shocked to be defending Awaclus here, but why is this thread even a thing?

I liked Artifacts though I've only played with it the once.  I also grabbed the deluxe edition on KS.  It looks great but convincing people to play with multiple expansions is tough.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Your reviews of the previews

Flag bearer : I'm worried that the battle for the flag can turn games into ridiculous slogs, because it seems to me that even if you are getting more flag bearer than your deck can afford, the flag is too powerful to be ignored. The on-trash effect is very useful for that kind of situations. But what if we have no trashers ? Time will say. Anyway flag bearer a nice card that use the artifact mechanic in a very elegant way. Very good.

Treasurer : It seems to me that with treasurer players have two ways to play : either they fight for the key, or they trash coppers. Gaining from the trash is potentially interesting with tfb. Very versatile. But like flag bearer, the artifact seems strong, maybe too much. Good.

It makes sense that the stronger Artifact is on the weaker card--terminal Gold plus trash a Copper is pretty strong, but I think $1 every turn is kinda weak.

The Flag Bearer fight, though, is going to be annoying to figure out every game.  That +1 Card is so powerful, especially when unavailable to everyone else (unlike Hireling).  Do I go for it early; is it going to get stolen often; etc.

Rules Questions / Re: Can you Banquet a Ghost?
« on: October 02, 2018, 08:11:47 pm »
All gainers can only gain from the Supply unless they specify otherwise. Banquet doesn't and Ghost isn't in the Supply, so Banquet can't gain it.

I feel like this rule needs to be on the first page of every rulebook. It's so often misunderstood.  Everyone knows you can't buy it, but gaining it through non-specific means is not obvious (to people who aren't paying attention).

32
For instance, you have to decide which cards to discard with Young Witch before opponents have to reveal whether they have the bane

Even weirder, if there is another reaction (say Horse Traders), than has to be revealed before you draw cards (and therefore before you discard).

Most of the obscure bugs are known about, and are just a much lower priority than the other work. And in most cases, what people would encounter aren’t actually bugs at all, so I don’t think this would help. They don’t have the problem of not enough things to do.

Really?  Wow.  I thought that Rio Games bought Dominion and I was assuming that under that corporate umbrella it made sense.

So is shuffle IT independent of dominion, or just like a third party contractor?

Shuffle iT is Stef, he has some kind of a contract with RGG.

I thought it was Stef and SCSN?

I'm triggered by this thread.

It wouldn't necessarily be winning play, but it would be deeply amusing to gain an action and immediately play it twice via combining Citadel and Innovation.

Via Cobbler you can make this happen.

36
Black Market <3 Innovation

37
Priest would be broken with Watchtower and Travelling Fair. If you play two Priests and have a Watchtower in hand, you can alternate between buying Travelling fairs and Coppers (then curses) for a net gain of 112 coins, giving you more than enough money to buy all the provinces.

Oh, that's a really good catch.  Not sure there's any way around it except to acknowledge that any given 3-card combo will only show up once in every X games.  I don't know what X is but it should be in the thousands I think.

Game Reports / Re: Quickest turnaround?
« on: September 23, 2018, 03:43:03 pm »
Hmm...really? I thought the player with more victory points wins in such a deadlock situation.

The official rule is that you keep playing until you starve to death.

You mean I put down my Estate and pick it back up until I starve to death.

Don't forget to shuffle it in between turns.

You mean Travelling Fair?

Rules Questions / Re: Inheritance bug in shuffle it?
« on: September 14, 2018, 07:04:37 pm »
It's correct that the +1 token can go on that pile. But your opponent's Estates should not get that bonus, because the Estates are not from that pile. (Any cards that are from that pile, get the bonus of course.)

I don't know if this works correctly on Dominion Online, I'm just saying.

I believe I've tried this once and it failed to work, as it should have.  Silly me.

Does anyone else get a Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy vibe from the description?

Have you not read all of the other box descriptions?  They all have a touch of Adams's humor.  Only one of them involves a life-size statue made of baklava, however.

Hearthstone / Re: Boomsday Project

None of what any of you ahve said made any sense, which suggests I've been away from Hearthstone for too long.  Probably a good thing, that.

Solo Challenges / Re: Minimum Possible Points (without Wall)

6. Exorcist brings 4 uniques (note that ghost is always brought by an unrecoverable treasure and you cant waste a slot on masq, and the kingdom pile with it is only 1/3 of a unique effectively)

Why not get it from a Vampire instead?  You only need one of them.

I am unsure what you are asking? Vampires can neither gain ghosts, nor can it recover a haunted mirror from the trash, nor can it take a haunted mirror from the opponent. Vampire as a pile only adds two uniques to the count. That's an easy bar to hit with any number of piles.

My point was that you can only gain ghosts via exorcist or haunted mirror. Gaining one via exorcist also allows you access to two other unique piles: imp and will-o-wisp. With the exception of gaining will-o-wisps from cards with associated heirlooms (So fool and...? I think it might just be fool), no way of gaining those brings more than 2 piles to the table so exorcist is the most efficient way.

The other way of getting ghost is truly bad. You lose the treasure so there was no change in unique numbers. Or you include Masq as a pile which lowers the average uniques/pile. And even so the pile that brings that heirloom is a card worth 2vp so its effectively only 1/3 of a unique.

Oh, I misunderstood what you were saying.  I thought you meant you'd need to trash a Gold to get a Ghost. (Most common Ghost play with Exorcist.)

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Royal Seal fix
« on: August 02, 2018, 12:06:59 am »
I feel like this is a reasonable place to say "What's wrong with Royal Seal, they can't all be the best $5 ever."

How would you feel if the next dominion expansion entirely consisted of nerfed versions of existing cards that you ignore in most games? You just wasted your money. Card quality matters.

In addition to being bad, it's boring.

Royal Seal isn't a nerfed version of anything.

I don't know why people are pretending that engines with treasure payload are rare.
It's still jarring to hear the pros have gone out of their way to avoid Silver and even Gold

I mean, sometimes/often it's a good idea.  And sometimes it's terrible or impossible.  The pros have gotten good at distinguishing the two!

Ruined Shepherd: +1 Action, Discard any number of Victory cards, revealing them. +2 Cards per card discarded.

Shepherd is not Scout.

Puzzles and Challenges / Re: The Boon challenge
« on: June 28, 2018, 01:40:59 pm »
I'm no good at these challenges, so consider my 16 as an initial lower bound:

6 copies of Druid are set aside with 6 copies of Ghost.  You have 4 copies of Druid in hand.  One of the set-aside Boons is +Action.
I can say that the Boon in my solution is not set aside by Druid, and my lower bound is higher. (I think 16 is actually the maximum number of times you can play Druid with Nocturne only, unless I missed some shenanigans involving Necromancer).

Yes, I'm pretty sure 16 is the upper bound on what my solution could do, so like I said, a complete lower bound for any other solution.

General Discussion / Re: Aging
« on: June 28, 2018, 01:39:25 pm »
I already experienced that in the military since I entered a few years later than most other people so a lot of the corporals were younger than me. It wasn't a very big difference though since it was only by like 1-2 years.

The aspect of aging that I'm the most worried about is hearing. Just a while ago, I was shocked to realize that my mom literally doesn't hear anything above 8 kHz and then I was further shocked to realize that it's normal for people of her age.

What was that? Speak up, I can't hear you.

(Actually my hearing problems are neurological, not age-related, alas)
