How do you feel about the idea of rotating supplies?  I get the sense that most Dominion players frown upon it, but Black Market is my favorite card, and that design choice seems to be common in other deckbuilders.  What would you change if you were gonna re-work Dominion into a more "black markety" format, and do you think that would make the game inherently worse (or better)?
In my initial notes for Dominion, I gave it a rotating supply. When it came time to make the game, I thought, wouldn't you just endlessly be screwed because good cards came up when you didn't have first shot at them? So I didn't do that.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/996671/secret-history-dominion

I have not put in the work to know what I'd do if I tried to make a version of Dominion with a rotating supply. There's no special draw towards trying it, because man, it's been done. The big things you get are 1) you need way fewer cards, and 2) it gives you a more tactical rather than strategic game, which could be something you wanted.

You don't really need to put in the work anyway, since it's been done almost to death and never quite gotten to the point where it's anything like Dominion.

What Donald said.

If they're not, Holunder, we really don't like even oblique personal attacks here.  So stop doing it.

Draft is the official mode not for first time players. Like three ages in Through the Ages, or all buildings in Caverna, or picking factions in Terra Mystica.

This is definitely not correct.

For first-time players, the official mode is using the "Generic" corporation and keeping all 10 cards without paying for them.

The draft variant is included but not automatically recommended in the rulebook.  However, it has become the de facto play method in many if not most groups, including most places where it's been used as a tournament.  It's uncommon to draft the starting 10 cards, however, because that adds a good half hour or so to the game, most likely, before you've even started playing.

I believe I was told that at WBC they drafted 5 and 5 for the first hand, which still seems pretty long.

TM is probably my favorite game at the moment.  There are several parts to this, not the least of which is being a huge fan of most of Kim Stanley Robinson's work.  Basically, if you haven't read his Mars series (Red Mars/Green Mars/Blue Mars), well (1) you should, but (2) you won't feel nearly as enamored of the theme.

There is some luck in the game, but I also believe it's mitigated by the draft.  I think the luck is much less than RFTG, but more than Dominion.  Nonetheless, like Dominion I see the same people winning multiple times even when they don't get the best draws, which suggests there's a significant amount of skill.

I have to agree with Donald on converting the paying twice to paying once, though you'd have to appropriately change the Planner milestone (presumably to cost $48 more).  I do think the endgame points for hoarding actually creates some interesting strategy, especially when playing as Helion, for instance, can get you the Thermalist award while still forcing the game to the end.

For me, "+1 to Coffers", or maybe even "+ to Coffers" would have been fine. "+1 Coffers" is icky.

From my point of view, the Jedi are evil!

Well, I mean, on many levels...

This is the first time I'd noticed that Donald made jokes about nose-stealing in two separate expansion descriptions.  It seems fitting they'd end up in the same box.

I like the name Coffer(s) for the token mat, but I don't like +1 Coffers on the card.  Possibly I don't like the double-plural?  If Baker gives me +1 Coffers, Butcher should give +2 Cofferses.  Cofferss?  Covfefes?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Rebuild as a Remodel variant
« on: March 16, 2018, 03:03:18 pm »
I don't know... I think the simplest fix for Rebuild is to just remove the +1 Action.  That takes care of about 80% of the issue...

Getting the Curse on the first shuffle is super bad.

To illustrate the point, if you play Cursed Gold to reach for Ill-Gotten Gains, you junk both players with a Curse and you also get a glorified Copper, which is basically just worse than not doing anything at all. Or if you play CG to reach for Lab, that's also worse than not doing anything at all because if you play the Lab and draw a Curse, that's the same as not having either card, but if you have the Curse in hand and Lab misses the shuffle, that's worse. Granted, IGG and Lab aren't exactly power cards to open with anyway, but sometimes you're pretty happy to open them on a regular 5/2 when there's nothing more important on the board.

So, if skipping your turn is better than reaching for Lab or IGG, buying something useful for $3 is probably better than reaching for any $5.

What about reaching for a power $6?  Artisan with spammable $5s on the board, Border Village for a $5, Hireling or Altar?

As someone who plays exclusively rated automatch, meaning random kingdoms, I think the biggest bug in Dominion is Silver and Gold. Having those always available means there's a playable strategy on every possible kingdom, and I say that's a bug because most random kingdoms, while technically playable, are pretty boring. What I like about Dominion is fitting a lot of the kingdom into my deck and finding new ways to combine cards. If the game had been designed without the basic treasures, you'd have to make sure the game is playable with decks of only kingdom cards. So there would have to be some rules about building kingdoms (not full random), and more importantly, card design would have to favor cards that fit with all kinds of other cards, and disfavor cards that make bad to buy other kingdom cards.

I think you're incorrect on this score.  While there will certainly be some boards where some version of Big Money is a good play, most good players feel it's extremely rare.  To the point where people have classified Embassy's Silver "gift" as an attack in some cases.

Actually being serious for a second, after 1000's of games I've discovered two major bugs in dominion.

BUG 1: The starting player has a huge advantage. In roughly 100% of the games I've lost as player 2 have been because my opponent got an extra turn than me. When both player's skill is similar this happens too often.

BUG 2: More often than in most games, the more games I play the more I've found that, when two player's skill are equal, the game comes down to good strategy and tactical play much less. After 100's of games, I think it's more down to luck.

Because a lot of people aren't going to get the joke:

Used to be you'd try to match with someone and, if you were lucky, you waited half an hour.

----

Also I logged on and played a couple of the campaign games... and then realized literally all of the skins and stuff I had are gone.

There are a lot more people online now than there used to be during the closed alpha so it's a lot easier to find a match.

Yeah, there was a rewards reset where people got back all the shards and power cores they spent and lost all the skins, because they were adjusting the prices of things so this was the fairest way to do it.

Hrm.  I don't think I got all my shards back.  But it would be difficult or impossible for me to determine that.  Anyway, I think they did a pretty good job with the campaign, and good to hear there are more people playing, maybe I'll try my hand at it again.  Any obvious way to link my previous account to Steam?

It has now launched on Steam Early Access: http://store.steampowered.com/app/490220/Prismata/

Also, if there are people around who don't yet have an alpha key, you can go ask for one in discord.gg/prismata and they should give you one for free.

But have they fixed matchmaking?

then buying an extra turn and annexing the dutchies.

You can't buy Annex on a Mission turn.  Do you mean you were buying Mission/Annex on the normal turn, then paying the debt off on the Mission turn?

Everyone stop saying strictly better and start saying "Better 90-93% of the time."
No! I'm pretty sure that what we're grasping towards isn't characterising a particular magnitude or certainty of better, but a particular sense of better.

We need a word for the sense in which Smithy is better than Ruined Library (it does more of the same good thing), as distinct from the sense in which Wharf is better than Spy (we all agree Wharf is better, but they're not at all the same kind of card).

You know that the 90-93% isn't intended as quantitative right?  It's a joke.

There we go.  Everyone stop saying strictly better and start saying "Better 90-93% of the time."

I took a glance at the Secret History of Seaside, and noticed something peculiar about Treasury:

Quote
Treasury: This replaced a card that had rules problems. I eventually figured out a way to deal with the problems, but not in time for it to make the set. It will make it somewhere else eventually.

Did the mystery card that this excerpt is referring to ever get released in a Dominion expansion?
No! I am pretty sure it's Stash.

Well, we're glad you got rid of the rules problems... /s :)

There is no use for a phrase that means "option X is better than option Y under all circumstances."  I'm not sure there's a use for that in real life; you can nearly always find an edge case.

I see two uses of this phrase commonly:

X is strictly better than Y, if you ignore cost.
X is strictly better than Y, if you ignore edge cases.

You also are confusing the definition.  It has never meant "...under all circumstances" and has always meant "...if you ignore edgecases".
That last part is critical, because the phrase is just about unusable, as you have surmised, if it was as strict as "under all circumstances".

The actual definition, that ignores edgecases, is actually useful for short handing information, when it is used correctly.  See my examples above.

Except is has never meant that on this forum.  Not in over seven years.  Edge cases abound; it's one of our hobbies here, and it has always accompanied the term "strictly better" because the edgecases are so numerous.

I feel like something missing in this perennial discussion is the question: why do we need this particular term at all?

There is no use for a phrase that means "option X is better than option Y under all circumstances."  I'm not sure there's a use for that in real life; you can nearly always find an edge case.

I see two uses of this phrase commonly:

X is strictly better than Y, if you ignore cost.
X is strictly better than Y, if you ignore edge cases.

The first can be useful if all you're doing is comparing costs.  All other things being equal, would you rather have a single Goons or a single Militia in your deck?  Obviously a Goons; it has the same effects as Militia, plus other positive effects.  Therefore, Goons must cost more than Militia.  While I suspect this might be useful for Donald when creating cards, and can be useful for comparing power levels, it has little utility when playing the game.  The only use I can imagine is something making a decision between, say, Village and Worker's Village when you have $4, or things like that.

In the second sense, this is a theoretically more powerful tool, but it effectively requires a definition of all the possible edge cases.  So just... toss this out.  It's a garbage phrase that is of no use except debating its use.  It's like a sign that says "DO NOT TOUCH THIS SIGN."  Like, why even put the sign there?

"X is usually better than Y" is just fine for discussing strategy.  Perhaps even "almost always."  Then you can include things like "unless" or "especially".

Warehouse is usually better than Cellar, unless you have a large hand.
Worker's Village is almost always better than Village unless you need unique cards or to end the game.
Count is almost always better than Mandarin unless you're using Mandarin's on-gain ability.

Heck, you could even expand on those opinions.  It might require more writing or defending your position.

----

As to the OP though:  I tend to agree Boons range from basically nothing to really really good, depending on situation.  The draw 2, discard 2 sucks if it causes a reshuffle (and the Cartographer one), and of course the gain a Silver can be actively harmful, but almost everything else is good.  So yeah, Bard is almost always better than a hypothetical terminal Silver with no bonus.  Is it better than other terminal Silvers?  You'll have a harder time convincing me of that.

For the tenth anniversary of Carcassone, you did a Carcassone-like promo; for the tenth anniversary or Puerto Rico, you did a Puerto-Rico-like promo.  (Arguably Governor is a better homage to the game, will Walled Village just an homage to the... well, the walls.)

We're getting near the tenth anniversary of Dominion.  Is there a chance there will be a tenth anniversary promo card?  And of course I wonder, what would be a single card that evokes Dominion in the way Governor evokes Puerto Rico?

Dominion Articles / Re: Witch, revised for 2018
« on: February 18, 2018, 02:58:05 pm »

A lot of new players don't like Witch, because it slows down the game. Most people's idea of fun is getting to play a bunch of cards and produce a bunch of money. Witch gets in the way of that. But I like Witch. When I give out Curses, I think to myself "yes". When I get Curses, I think to myself "no". Even if you don't like it, you have to respect it.

This. My family has refused to play with any curser in the kingdom, and dislike Attack cards in general, which is a shame. Then they complain that the games are too short.

I bet they also complain Dominion isn't interactive enough...
