Goko Dominion Online / Re: Don't even bother with Goko today

Sure, that's valid. Leaving because another game is "more appealing" is irritating and rude.

that can cut both ways. if there is enough time for a user to join a game and then back out before the host starts then perhaps the host is the rude one.

52
There's also a tendency to create a board that has "everything" for an engine (i.e. draw, actions, buy, etc.). The most fun engine boards are the ones where some of those pieces are hard to come by, but you make it work anyway.

unfortunately, that is how many of the submissions were designed, and in the end that limits our options in choosing finalists. popular and powerful cards were included in tons of sets, and it really makes things challenging for us. if i had to guess there would probably be a strong correlation between the Qvist rankings and the submission totals. along those lines, there are a handful of cards which already appear quite a few times for the 2014 contest. one card has already made 7 appearances in 35 submissions.

A good way I find to think about it is to include parallel strategies that are both similar in strength, but interesting in their own way. Perhaps one is harder to pull off, but is stronger once set-up.

i would agree, though i think that this is far more difficult than many people realize. in reviewing sets last year i often had the impression that cards were kind of just tacked on as an afterthought to create that parallel strategy. this is where playtesting a couple of times (if possible) might come in handy for some people, to help ensure that the alternate strategies are indeed similar in strength.

53
looks like there are 35 submissions so far. there is only about a month left to submit so keep em coming!

54
There's no easy way to tell you this so I'll just be direct. There won't be any more dominion expansions. I'm so sorry.

perhaps the OP would be interested in heading over to the fan cards subforum.

55
I think the form didn't work on Opera, but just in case I have submitted the same kingdom three times: please don't count that as three submissions.

no worries, we won't count it against you. mistakes happen. if you or anyone else has any issues you can always leave a note in the comment field as well. and if we had any questions or problems we can always shoot you a PM too.

What's sad is that they were working on automatch at some point when John was repsonding to querries 6 mos or go on getsatisfaction, if I remember correctly. Also, I was really under the impression the lobbies were a tech limitation of the original vision to use HTML5. Evidently I was mislead in this. I have no idea why they are sticking with it an not releasing their own automatch. Doing what Yahoo does is doing as good as what sites did 10 years ago -- not good enough.

as much as i like having a go at goko, i can sort of understand the reasoning behind this. in theory, goko was supposed to eventually have a ton of titles. while maybe not perfect for dominion, the general lobby system is something that might have been the best solution consistent across 20+ different games. and of course, there is something to be said for the familiarity of the lobby system. most people have seen it before and are comfortable with it, and imo goko has always seemed to target casual gamers far more than the competitive lot you would find on this forum.

of course, whatever the reasoning had been you'd hope they'd have noticed it has not been as smooth as hoped. even if they don't flat out copy isotropic's matchmaking you'd think they could have come up with an alternate option by now.

The masses have cried out for a Kingdom Design Challenge, and who are we to deny the masses!

DominionStrategy.com and f.DS are proud to announce the 2014 Kingdom Design Challenge, the 3rd iteration to date, following the 2011 and 2012 contests.

The contest rules and entry form can be found below. All rules are subject to change by contest organizers as necessary. Feel free to discuss the contest or ask for clarifications on any rules!

1. Starting today (February 4) we will accept Kingdom submissions. Submissions close March 22, 2014, though we reserve the right to adjust that date as necessary to align with the GokoDom tournament. Information about your submission might be made public after the conclusion of the competition.
2. Kingdom is defined as a set of 10 Dominion cards to be used in a game of the Grand Final. Beyond the following conditions, your Kingdom is no other constraint.
  • If your setup includes Young Witch, please choose a Bane card.
  • Please also specify whether Colonies / Platinum or Shelters are included. If your kingdom includes Colonies / Platinum then your Kingdom should include at least one Prosperity Kingdom card. If your kingdom includes Shelters then it should include at least one Dark Ages Kingdom card.
  • Your kingdom may have any number of Alchemy cards.

3. Kingdoms may include any published Dominion card including the Promotional Cards and the recently released Guilds expansion. Submissions with fan-made cards will automatically be rejected. Please ensure that you have spelled your submissions correctly and that you are not confusing two separate Kingdom cards.
4. Kingdoms can be submitted at the form located here or below. We require entrants to be registered on the forum. Submissions from unregistered entrants will not be considered. If you participate, please attempt to access your account regularly or edit your your account settings to forward messages to your email address. We need a reliable way to contact you with any questions or issues that may arise.
5. Each entrant may submit up to 10 kingdoms. If you submit more than 10 kingdoms then only the first 10 kingdoms will be considered. Only submit your best!
6. We will select at least seven Kingdoms which are expected to be used for the GokoDom III Finals. Due to potential Goko card ownership issues with the finalists we can't guarantee that all finalist Kingdoms will be played during the finals. However, if a kingdom is not used for the finals it will still be on the final ballot for community voting. We will not announce the Kingdoms until the final begins.
7. After the final, voters will be able to vote for their favorite of the seven (or more) Kingdoms. That poll will close one week from the end of the Grand Final; at that point, whoever submitted the winning Kingdom will also receive a physical copy of any Dominion expansion.
8. You may submit Kingdoms with any intent, and the voters can select whichever Kingdom they like for any reason. That being said, in selecting the final Kingdoms, judges will look for Kingdoms that can promote future discussion. The ideal Kingdom will encourage diverse strategies and tactics, have no clear dominant approach, and emphasize skill over luck. The finalists from the previous KDC can be found here.

greatexpectations, you set up the submission form for kingdoms last year, right? If that set up could be used again (with possibly a limit of 3 or 5 submissions per person), that would be great.

i did not set up the submission form last year. i was more involved with the tournament itself. i think there was some back and forth with theory at the very start of the KDC, but my role was limited in that until the end. at that point, theory pulled me in to lend a  hand in trimming down the submission list and commenting on some of the better submissions. the submission form should not be hard to duplicate, though the form (and the rules) could probably use a bit of tweaking because of the newest expansions.

i'll get in touch with theory and kirian about getting it set up for this year. theory can probably lend a quick hand with some logistical issues, and kirian will probably want a say in integrating it into the GokoDom.

If Kirian wants help with that (e.g. setting judging parameters, play testing/picking kingdoms, contributing to a small prize), I would be open to that, even if I have to bow out of GokoDom to do it.

if i read that right that you weren't interested then i would not be opposed to helping out with that.  it might be too much for kirian, and i did lend a hand last year so i can hopefully be trusted to not botch things too much.

I still have a few I could submit, but I think I would enjoy picking the winners more.
As an already non-particant in GokodomIII I'd be willing to throw in my two cents for kingdom judging.  At the very least I'd be willing to playtest/discuss some of the finalist and maybe help weed out the Hoard of submissions.

this is where i would not feel qualified, and it is why i was hesitant to volunteer at all. i don't have a strong enough grasp on either dark ages or guilds to make a fair judgment past a very cursory "first pass" analysis of the kingdoms. so in theory, i could take care of some of the logistics and then when it comes to the deeper inspections of kingdoms i could pass that on to a smaller circle of playtesters.

KC and throne room can still be very good in games without +actions or cantrips as long as thereis a good card-drawer. if smithy is on the board, a KC or throne room engine is still very viable, especially if there is trashing

also known to some as 'pulling a marin'.

61
i have mentioned this on here before but one card that i think needs to go is masquerade. i think it is too strong for it's price point, it impacts far too many boards, it is highly luck dependent, and it can essentially act as an attack. the idea is cute but from a competitive dominion standpoint i really don't care for it.

There's no minimum age limit on Goko right?

relevant quote from the decline of civility thread:

This stuff perhaps seems less newsworthy when you realize you may be playing against kids.

63
while not quite as useful in your case, the Recommended Kingdoms page on our wiki has a lot of useful information. relevant to your current scenario, you can find the recommended kingdoms for both intrigue and seaside as well as a tournament kingdom which featured 5 cards from each.

Do we know yet what the free DA card is? I own all the expansions and everything. I am just curious what everyone got.
The full set is: Nobles, Haven, Hoard, Haggler, Graverobber.

I read about how Facebook's algorithm displays stories partially on in the interest in them. So by Liking your own status, you increase its "buzz" (for lack of a better word since I'm tired).

Now, whether Dominion Online did this for exactly that reason or as a misguided attempt to look cool to others I leave to the audience to determine.

my guess was that the person in charge of social media went to like it on their personal account but hadn't logged out of Goko's account.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Petition for the return of Isotropic
« on: January 06, 2014, 01:47:24 pm »
False. There are lots of people who complained about having to pay for the virtual game when they'd bought the physical one, those who complained about the loss of the text-based interface (which no professional company is going to allow), etc. Even if Goko hadn't had all these issues, there would have been plenty of complaining. Less, certainly, but still plenty.

how exactly does that make what i said false? i never said that was the only reason for the backlash. i listed the chief reason for the backlash, one that encompasses a host of issues. if that was somehow unclear to you i will gladly edit the post.

and if the only issue was people complaining about double paying it wouldn't be a "backlash" so much as a handful of people complaining. and even those concerns would be alleviated with a competitive price for a quality product.

For one, I don't think dragging dougz in to this is a good plan; he's the one with something to lose if he brings back the site, and it's awfully entitled of us to say he should run the servers from his basement at his own personal risk. If he wants to, great, but that should be his own decision.

i would agree that pressuring dougz to reimplement isotropic is probably a poor move. but i think you could make a case that contacting him is not an inherently bad idea. he is seemingly familiar with and on friendly terms with all involved parties (this community, DXV, RGG, and Goko) and likely has better ways of directly contacting the other parties. asking him to start up pirate isotropic is a heavy request, but for him to forward a message or ask a question is not (to me) unreasonable.

i would recommend checking out our wiki! it really is quite informative. i think that the New to Dominion entry would be a fine place to start.

Why? Because of us and our whiny bullshit.

is it really so offensive that a community dedicated to dominion would be upset with a clearly substandard dominion implementation? i am a little confused by your antagonism. where else should dominion enthusiasts discuss (and yes, complain about) goko? a bug in a new apple product would be near national news, but we are apparently not allowed to complain about a crappy dominion product? come on now. perhaps if goko actually responded to issues in their own forums it wouldn't spill over to here so regularly. could some of the criticism here be a bit more tactful? sure. but i also don't understand the seeming 'untouchable' status goko has for many users.

fwiw, grumblings have brought change in the past. i would remind people that when it was first released goko cost quite a bit more for all sets than it does now.

I don't presume to speak for Donald, but I would be shocked if he found that idea appealing after experiencing the backlash from the first shutdown.

the backlash was not because isotropic shut down. the backlash was because goko sucks and it was the only legal alternative. if the official implentation was quality you wouldn't hear much of a peep about isotropic.

Tournaments and Events / Re: DominionStrategy Championship?
« on: January 03, 2014, 03:13:56 pm »
i was trying to avoid the detailed reply, but i should have known better than that!

GokoDom is about the same scale in terms of number of matches, the main difference being that in a single-elimination tournament most of the matches are done in the first two rounds.

But saying it can't be done on Goko is a bit silly.

- similar scale for total matches, sure. but how those matches are spread makes a difference. who those players are changes things too, and i would wager that GokoDom benefits by pulling more heavily from the more regular forum members.
- the last GokoDom ended what 3-4 months ago? there has been the international tournament in between, but by most accounts the quality and performance of Goko seems to be steadily declining.
- perhaps most importantly, total numbers means far more than total matches when it comes to managing who owns what sets. i said a large scale tournament would be difficult, and i meant it. i don't think that is silly at all. it looks like you had 83 for GokoDom, with 65(?) who had all/most cards. i think it would be very difficult to find ~3.5 times as many willing to play who owned all/most sets. and then what of the people who don't have the sets but want to play? you can try to split them early, but eventually they would be bound to collide. and of course that adds another layer of legwork to consider.

Sure, Goko has problems, but they're not insurmountable.

managing those problems will likely change some things that are what made the original DSC exciting to me in the first place. there will have to be compromises and changes, and at some point you are moving away from what DSC was to another GokoDom variant.

is it technically impossible to pull off? no, i guess not. i just don't see a repeat of the past scale and format given the current state of affairs. i wouldn't mind offering input based on experience (and i'm sure Kirian would gladly chip in as well), but barring the changes mentioned previously i am going to pass on running the show.

i tried contacting goko a month or two back but i still haven't heard a word. of course, that is not really surprising given the current state of affairs over there. it is really hard for me to imagine a tournament on the scope we are used to having with the present state of goko. all of the connection/playability issues (on top of the set ownership questions) only compound the many smaller issues of running a larger tournament.

short of a 180 from goko, the revival of isotropic, or the emergence of an alternative a large scale online tournament seems (to me anyway) to be out of the question.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What if King's Court cost $3?
« on: December 11, 2013, 09:32:14 pm »
There are way too many good $4s that would be just outrageous if you could play them 3 times on your third turn.

with baker this could theoretically be $5's. 3 x witch or 3 x mountebank on turn 3 is downright cruel.

We have Van Persie and Robben who are A+, Sneijder who is A when he's in form, van der Vaart who is B+ and the rest is all worse than that. Especially our defense is vulnerable as those guys only play in our own Mickey Mouse league in the Netherlands.

van persie and robben are A+ but they are injured far too often. if either one of them are out the dutch are in trouble. that back line is a bit of a mess. i think that the dutch will be out unless they can get a good result against spain.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Remembering Your First Game of Dominion
« on: November 21, 2013, 01:27:38 pm »
my first game of dominion was played while a number of lovely young ladies baked and then served me delicious fresh apple pie. i distinctly remember playing a version of smithy/BM (only bought smithy, money, VP) that could have been beaten by a BM bot programmed by a toddler. i spent most of the game trying to watch the other players to learn some strategy while trying to not mess up shuffling my deck. i did not win, but i liked it enough that i ended up playing almost 5000 more games after that.
