Hmm i don't think anyone of the finalist can do specific preparations for the finals based on the information in this thread as long as it doesn't get too specific.
I mean less than 10% of the kingdoms that were entered will be played in the finals.
So if you know something like Scout has been entered 5 times or 65% of the kingdoms has some alternative VP card in it that's nothing that gives you an advantage for the finals.

So i think questions like how many Kingdoms don't include any village, or don't include any form of trashing are safe to answer here.

I think I am going to have to disagree.

you might be right Markowkette but the issue is that i can't really say for sure. without a pretty high level of confidence that what i say won't influence the play in the finals i think it is better off to err on the side of caution. that is all information we can (and will) gladly share after the fact though.

Gokodom Playoffs getting started.
Time for some new statistics regarding the contest maybe?
*hope* :)

i would love to throw out some more statistics! unfortunately, i'm not sure how much i should at this point. i don't want to inadvertently give an advantage to any players in the GokoDom finals by hinting too heavily at what sorts of cards/combinations made appearances in the submissions. that said, i can think of something that seems to me pretty safe, even if it isn't the most exciting or informative. here is a distribution of how many expansions are required to construct the submitted kingdoms, counting promos as an expansion.

# of required expansions - frequency of occurence
1 - 0
2 - 0
3 - 6
4 - 12
5 - 37
6 - 35
7 - 29
8 - 4
9 - 0

that said, if there is something specific you or anyone else are curious about let me know and i can take a look.

i fully agree with the inclusion of beckerman, especially with the attacking threats in USA's group. the back four is bit of a mess, a mix of injuries and poor performances. part of me wants to see yedlin out there for some speed in the back line but i think he would get picked to pieces.

beyond that i don't feel all that well about altidore or donovan. nothing against them, i'm just not sure they'll see a ton of time. and i love both kjlestan and zusi. i could see kjlestan being the regular starter with zusi being used as an impact sub.

If you're going to Fest that must mean you live in FL? Or on the east coast somewhere?

upstate ny. people come from all over though, its definitely not just a florida / east coast thing. i'm not 100% in yet but i'd like to go. i went two years ago and it was a pretty great weekend.

Of course the Bouncing Souls and NOFX, though I never got too into Osker. How I Spent My Summer Vacation and Punk in Drublic are classics!

the bouncing souls were definitely a favorite. i'm technically a jersey boy and bouncing souls and bigwig were really big in our circle back then.

Did you ever get into the Give Em the Boot comps? Hellcat actually had ska bands like The Slackers and The Pietasters, who I used to play drums for.

it looks like i've got 3 and 6. i can't say i've listened to them much at all though. most of the songs that look even vaguely familiar are from tim armstrong in some form. did you drum for both? i believe slackers are playing at fest this year so there is a chance so there is a chance i might see them.

Yes! I can't remember which one of those I listened to most but Punk-O-Ramas introduced me to Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, H2O, Agnostic Front, Voodoo Glow Skulls, The Cramps... that was a good time in my life.

i would add bad religion, the bouncing souls, nofx, and osker to that! but otherwise i agree entirely. this series was definitely influential. the $4-$5 price point certainly helped, especially for someone right about the age of high school freshman.

i really don't think this is the thread for beating dead horses. and even if it were, i would prefer to see a case stated without personal jabs.

I'm weakly in the "leaderboard should be exactly one type of dominion" camp and having this option available for pro games would certainly damage that aspect.

it's a nice idea but the discussion of starting hands / point counters from a competitive perspective is (to me) kind of silly until everyone has the same access to all of the same expansions.

Dude, suck it up. The game was designed to be played without a point counter. I don't want #vpoff folks to become second-class citizens just because you feel you need the added crutch of a VP counter in every game you play.

seems to me a bit harsh, no? 'second class citizens' is quite dramatic while 'Dude, suck it up' and 'added crutch' just seem blatantly inflammatory. tables was asking a question for a personal preference in a thread littered with ambitious personal requests. i fail to see the problem.

How can we vote for the Kingdom submissions?? Is there are a thread somewhere for that? Or has the time for this not come yet??

we've got some people currently in the process of reviewing the submissions and trimming them down ~11 submissions. once we hit that point (still a couple of weeks off) the kingdoms will be posted for public comment and vote.

38
some other comments:

- one of the five cards without a single submission was pretty easily in the top half of submissions last year.
- totaling the cards from every submission, alchemy and corncucopia somehow have the exact same number of cards submitted. hinterlands, prosperity, and intrigue are all within 6 submissions of each other.
- counting the promos as an expansion, the average kingdom submission would require 5.7 different expansions to play.
- kingdoms with an attack card tended to include another attack card, with 1.7 attack cards per kingdom with at least one.

this should be enough to keep you guys going for a little while. i'm also putting together some numbers for kingdoms with various options (terminal draw, plus buy, alternate VP, kingdom treasures, etc) but that isn't ready for all the options i was planning yet.

Goko Dominion Online / Re: Dominion Online set selection
« on: March 24, 2014, 08:49:17 am »
my two cents:
- pro mode should keep up with keeping cards hidden until the game starts. there should be a way of quickly showing what cards are in the selection pool for that game though.
- ideally you would have the option of using all cards owned between the players involved in the game.
- i don't see why veto/ban decisions have to be so concrete for a pro mode. we are using computers, we can do fancy things like probabilities. you could do something like give users X% points to distribute among cards, with that percent reducing the probability of seeing that card in a kingdom. if you want to burn it all to stop 2 cards from showing cool. if you want to just bias it against say alchemy cards then hey that's fine too. to me that allows you to achieve most of your enjoyment without adding in metagames or deviating too far from the full random model of competitive games.
- obviously matchmaking would be nice, as would AND options for identical starting hands and point counters. it would also be cool to see first turn dependent on previous games but that is a little further down for me.
- there needs to be some way to return back to your game session if you lose connection for whatever reason. you should be able to lose your internet connection or accidentally close your browser and not have to lose your game. ratings can be silly when you get credited with a loss for the crime of having a 2 second blip in your connection.

Any word on what we ended up with?

- 123 submissions, just over half of the 228 submissions from last year.
- 54 different people submitted at least one entry
- the most submitted card appeared 20 times. that means just about 1 in every 6 kingdom made use of this card. there was one at 18 and one at 17 and it starts to bunch a bit past that.
- the highest submission last year was hamlet at 38, but that included twice as many kingdom submissions and there were two full less expansions to work with.
- 5 different cards received 0 submissions.

we can share more of the data once the contest ends, but that should be enough for starters!

I'd actually go farther and say that competitive players are irrelevant.

here are some numbers from the final isotropic leaderboard. while im sure a few competitive players had alternate accounts, there are also some accounts that would have fallen off for inactivity.

games played - number of different players to hit that total
>50 - 5309
>100 - 4918
>500 - 3383
>1000 - 2331
>2000 - 1170
>5000 - 181
>8000 - 23

it's far from scientific, but id wager that someone who played over 1000 games (no matter the timespan) on an unofficial implementation is probably a "competitive" player. and for me at least, 2300 is not an irrelevant portion of the market. i am sure a good chunk of that number has moved on and doesn't play much on goko, but i would argue that a high quality product could bring back that number and then some.

i would also guess that there is the potential for them to generate some continuous income from those on the "very serious" end of the spectrum. a regular tournament format with a low cost of entry (say $3-$5) and some interesting prizes could probably earn back the development costs pretty quickly and could be a way to generate interest for potential customers.

What's the number at right now?

high 80's at the moment! we should be able to hit 100 by the end, but i think that is still less than half of what we had last year.

45
only a couple more days left for submissions!

theory, is there any way we could get a FAQ / discouraged topics thread stickied in this subforum? threads dedicated to public blacklisting or bringing back isotropic seem like magnets for trouble.

47
So, I don't see this addressed anywhere but: what is the position on publicly discussing our submissions (now, after contest closes, finalists announced... any of those times)?

good catch. as far as discussion, i will defer as best as possible to last year's iteration. i would ask that public discussion be limited until the finalists are announced, especially because the sets might be used for GokoDom on some level. if anyone can provide compelling reasons otherwise i am open to hearing it, but i see too much potential for discussion to influence other submitters or the judges.

in a mostly unrelated note, i am open to the idea of keeping a public tally of submission totals in this thread (eg greatexpectations has 4 submissions so far, theory has 2, etc) if there is interest out there. it could serve as a verification for submitters that kingdoms were received as well as a way to publicly keep track of how many submissions we have so far.

48
Can you confirm if my last kingdom submission went through? I submitted it today through the form embedded to this thread, but the form just went blank after submitting. No confirmation message or anything.

I should have 4 kingdoms submitted in total under the name "markusin".

i don't see any entries from you today. i have 3 entries from you total with the last one dated 2/16. the form seems to be working fine, as other submissions have been received today. try it again i guess?

I submitted two under "soulnet goko" (my Goko username) instead of "soulnet" (my forum username). Sorry for the stupidity. Should I resubmit?

nah you are fine, shouldn't be a problem.
