Puzzles and Challenges / Re: Yet another "what's missing"

The king wants to court the young witch at the outpost? Surely you jest!
No, I haven't the damndest clue. With the function and artwork gone there's only the name, cost, type, set and color left, and I still don't see it. Then again, I'm so bad at these even the "easy" ones have mostly flown right past me.

Council Room Feedback / Re: New probability of winning graphs for 2p games
« on: September 26, 2011, 04:18:14 am »
Sharing victory doesn't mean you get all of it any more than sharing a cookie does.
It would be the exact opposite because you share a metaphysical thing: the victory.

Here's (another) comparison to poker. WSOP shows you the chances of winning a hand at showdown both pre- and postflop for each participating player. They chose to include ties into each players chances because a split pot still gives the players chips, and thus you can see percentages such as "Player A: 95%, Player B: 92%". You'd think those numbers are useless, but they actually tell you the chances of the player winning some chips at all, not necessarily the whole shebang.

Whether or not a graph includes ties into the chances of winning or not is imho just a matter of preference and doesn't change anything one way or another. It should be clear what the numbers mean though.

if I have a 60% chance of winning, my opponent should have a 40% chance (assuming 2P).
Unless there a chance of a tie. But, in order to follow the rules of "both players rejoice in their shared victory" the sum should be over 1.

The second player can do the exact same move to pass the hypothetical "first player penalty" back to the first player.

Indeed you do, and that exact combo has its own article.

Minion is only useful if you can get as many of them as possible. If you start a hand with 3 minions you'll play the first two for $2 each, then the third to discard your hand and hopefully keep the chain going.

ed: Here's the article about Minion

The keyword here is "duration". The KC stays out to show that you've played your duration card thrice and not just once.

Donald is a fan of gameplay that "keeps you honest", thus the KC under the caravan will both remind you to draw those extra cards AND show the other players why you're drawing so many cards.

Joking. Position is everything in poker, if you're first every turn it (almost) doesn't matter how good you are.

Agreed, this was like reading another secret history of Dominion and shows how thoughtfully and thoroughly Donald approached designing it. Kudos and thanks for the read.

If you win the first game then yes, you'll go second the next time around. That's how I understand Isotropic works (now) and playing best of five games should make the better player win. I've played more 3-way games than headsup (in Dominion that is) but surely the first player advantage and shuffle luck is a minor issue after five games of play. We kind of agree on the issue, but disagree on it being a good enough reason to make a change for tournaments sake.

That being said, I even like going last to react to the first players first buys.

So, the only case where it won't even out is when you're actually playing all 5 games (if you're done after 3 games, you've lost at least two games you've started). Over that many hands shuffle luck has more to say than who gets first turn.

Sounds like an edge case to me. If you're playing your opponent in a tournament you'll most probably do all the games concurrently, and over a best of 5 it'll even out. So what if your opponent happens to start the first game?

Yes, I checked it and didn't find myself either, I'm just wondering if I missed something. But let's hope the tourney is a success and will result in more.

How does that work? It says I'm level 1 when I'm logged in.

I didn't get to play? :(

ed: I'm new, I understand. I mostly play live which is why I haven't got that much of a backlog of games on isotropic. :)

No, I meant that if you're not buying any silvers you must have quite a good reason for it. That's my interpretation of the win without silver being higher than with.

69
Then I'll take a guess and say that rate (for silver) is a bit biased, because any player who deliberately skips buying silvers alltogether are more likely to have a plan and follow it through while beginners will clutter their deck with silvers even in late game. And lose.

This seems too obvious but
Library?

Feels like fishing a red herring.

If you buy silvers and end up trashing them all by the time you win a game, does that count as a win with or without?

Dominion Articles / Re: Playing Against Possession
« on: September 14, 2011, 05:45:24 pm »
Ah right, that clears it.

Concerning trashing, I meant that as a separate issue refering to the trash-for-benefit segment of topic creator. Those cards get immensely powerful in the hands of a possessor, but you won't lose any cards. While I don't think OP made a mistake, it was worded in a way that one could misinterpret the downside.

Dominion Articles / Re: Playing Against Possession

Jester is a bit of an odd duck; whereas when you play Jester on a regular turn you can choose whether you or your opponent takes the cloned card, on a Possessed turn (in a 2-player game) all Jester-cloned cards go to the possessor.
Are you sure? According to the rules, the "you" always refers to the player even if possessed.

Also, any trashed cards in a possessed turn are merely discarded, so only ambassador and masquerade could have you actually lose your cards.

Buy all six sets while you're in the shop because you're thinking "Oh well, I'm going to buy them all at some point anyway".

That's how I did it.

Simulation / Re: Dominiate: a Dominion simulator that runs on the Web

Pseudocode ahoy:
Code: [Select]
var coinValue = TradeRouteArrayOfBoughtCards.length;

if(!$.inArray(VPCardJustBought, ArrayOfBoughtVPCards)) {
    ArrayOfBoughtVPCards.push(VPCardJustBought);
}
Only would only need to store the name, not the whole card object. Discard if already in the array. If one wants to be more gentle with the processor one could initialize it with every VP card and then remove them instead, thus you won't need the extra check. Then one could just return false or coin value or whatever needed directly if the array is empty (I doubt it would have a noticeable effect though).

But I shouldn't get into too much detail without having a clue on how the code looks and works.

EDIT: Just got another idea, one could just bind another function on a buy event (or whatever applicable) of a VP card, and then remove that bind after the first purchase.
