Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss: Quartermaster
« on: March 21, 2023, 12:36:48 am »
1. Obviously depends on the other cards. If there are $5 trashers you probably want those first. If there's a spammable $4 you probably want this early. With Swamp Shacks you want a lot of Quartermasters.
2. At some point you're going to switch to estates when you run out of actions that you want. I'm not very good at gauging when to do this.
3. Wall. Don't get Quartermasters when there's Wall. I did this once and was very sad.

who wants to play a light RMM? I will get one up like in a day or two if someone promises to run one after me so I can actually play :P

I've been working on designing a sort of spiritual successor to hatchling that's less swingy. It could work as an RMM

Seems we need mods to start a game

opened black market/hermit.

turn 3 drew black market and 4 coppers. black market opened to king's court, bishop, and.... patron. so i could afford king's court with the rule change!

What rule change was that?
Probably being allowed to use coffers for black market buys (and at other times).

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Badly designed cards

If we're going to talk about base 2e cards, I think Sentry is the real culprit here. It's really swingy as a trasher, sometimes trashing two estates for one player while the other player is stuck putting good cards back on top. It also presents the player with a total of 10 different options on play, which imo is too much for base set.

But the great thing about dominion is for every 1 badly designed card there's like 100 well designed card, so you can just not play with the ones you don't like.

I opened double Masterpiece (it was pious).

That was my precisely my point. Actions are not the „standard“ while Treasures are some weird funky edge case that need any rationale. Especially not in an expansion with a lot of Treasures.

You make it sound like a complete coincidence that every other card that works the same as an action or a treasure has been an action so far. Clearly actions are some sort of default; or at least they always have been until now.
Ain’t just me dude. The designer himself said in the other thread that there was no deeper meaning, no fine-tuning or whatever behind converting an Action into a Treasure. Also pure coincidence that Shaman did not end up as a Treasure.

Has he said that? Previously Donald clearly stated that only specific cards should be Treasures:
Treasures should make money; I made an exception for a card that wanted to be played in the buy phase. They should feel like treasures - they make money, or, there's Horn of Plenty again, gain cards.

In the same post, he says that treasure-attacks, treasure-durations, and action-treasures probably aren't worth doing. Things have changed since 2014.

I have a feeling Reckless is going to be a major PITA for Stef.

Wow, Frigate seems really mean! But I thought that about Warlord and it turned out not to be so bad, so I guess we'll see.

It's always nice to have more Villa variants.

So swamp shacks and black market was really fun.

Not a question, just wanted to say thank you for the previews. Previews week is one of my favorite weeks of the year and this year we got five! I really appreciate all the thought that goes into introducing the set piece by piece in a thematic way. It's something you don't have to do (I think, I don't know if you're required to) but it makes a big difference. To me it's kind of like how musicians start with a lead single to get you hyped for the album.

One cool thing about First Mate is that you don't have to have the cards in your hand to start with. So you can chain Smithies like they're Cultists, or play a bunch of Labs as Lost Cities.

I'm really surprised King's Cache is able to cost $7 without any extra abilities while Tiara needs a buy and topdecking to cost the same as Throne Room.

Although I'm not an expert, my take is this: King's Cache is a reasonable $7 card. King's Court is a crazy-strong $7 card. It's not King's Cache that's the outlier here.

I would have to disagree with you. You are an expert.

Giving Loot-gainers a type would have required either not doing events and traits that give you loot or introducing dual-type landscapes, which we've never seen.

Spoiler…?

I have no knowledge of such a thing, but it's a possibility.

I guess since Loot isn't in the supply, there doesn't need to be a special type for cards that refer to them to remind you to get the Loot pile and shuffle it at the beginning of the game? Which is a shame; they could have been called "Ruiners" for maximum confusion.

(More seriously, I am a little confused that there are types that mean you need to prepare the Boons or Hexes during setup, but not one for Loot even though the setup needs appear to be the same.)

Yeah as I recall, the reason Spoils-gainers didn't get a special type was that there was no setup need when playing games with Spoils, but games with Boons required you to shuffle the Boons. Loot definitely seems the same as Boons in that way.

Giving Loot-gainers a type would have required either not doing events and traits that give you loot or introducing dual-type landscapes, which we've never seen.

42
"Landscapes" is what I use.

I guess that makes sense. If I say "what landscapes are in the kingdom?" you're not going to say "Misery"

Oh man, Prosper is going to be fun with Fortune and Bank and King's Cache, which I predict will be a treasure tripler that has some additional effect.

44
It would be nice to have a name to refer to traits, events, ways, landmarks, and projects plus any future similar things rather than using an acronym that keeps changing every time something new is introduced. Donald, is there any shorthand you use?

45
Cue the debate over whether Obelisk should be a Trait.

I wonder if Inherited will be as if you had Inheritance on that card from the beginning of the game? Probably not, because what would you do with split piles?

46
I wonder how often it's good to use Prepare as a village. Just buy too many terminals and play them every other turn for $3 and a buy.

If it's on a cargo ship, it'll arrive at the start of your next turn. Your opponent might be taking a really long turn though...

I think the rules for durations would call for it to be discarded at the end of your opponent's turn after the turn you skipped, which seems like a hard thing to remember.
