Dominion General Discussion / Re: Today I Learned...
« on: March 23, 2016, 03:42:13 pm »
A while back I played an IRL 4p game with pirate ship where we took a token for each treasure we trashed instead of just one when anyone trashed a treasure. People quickly powered them up to $16, and Seaway was in the game, so after just a little while, people were playing Pirate Ships and buying 2 Provinces. I later found out this was wrong when I played an online game with Pirate Ship and it didn't make it to $16. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted (well not for me, I went for Feodum in the IRL game for some reason).

And Swamp Hag can really fuck up cost reduction decks or some Goons decks.

One of my opponents once had a Goons megaturn while I had a bunch of Swamp Hags in play and gained like 15 curses and still won. I feel like a strong Goons deck still beats a strong Swamp Hag strategy.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dominion Storage Thread
« on: March 20, 2016, 03:56:52 am »
There is a thread about storage solutions for Empires, if you're interested: http://forum.dominionstrategy.com/index.php?topic=14682.0

I'm not much of a help; I still keep my cards in their original boxes. As soon as possible after I graduate in May, I plan on building my own 2-tier box to store all of the current expansions with room for future expansions and any fan cards I end up printing out. I guess I'll post here when it's in progress.

This is one of those events that feels more like a little rules change; whenever you have $2 left over and want to cycle this is great. I don't think I would often forego a good $2 card for this, but there might be times when I would get this and a good $2 card even if there was a $4 card I may have wanted.

My goal is to have at least 9 people in this, so we can have 3 games each round. Right now we have 6 people who said they would do it, plus two maybes (including me), so we need 1-3 more people. Hopefully we can get started within the next week.

I've always wondered if there could be a way to make this work with Minion. It'd be hard to set up, but the attack (a random 3 cards) could be very mean.

Anyway I think the attack can serve as a good payload if you play it every turn, and might actually combo better with normal discard attacks. Drawing one fewer card each turn can really hurt a lot of strategies.

Yeah, I'm still planning on doing this, once we get enough people. On scoring, I'm currently leaning towards 8 points for first place, 2 points for second place, and half of the points for a tie (4 points for first place tie, 1 point for second place tie). I might end up playing if it's necessary to get enough participants, although only if everyone agrees that's OK.

I really think this community needs some competitive 3P games; people don't seem to give them enough credit. Personally I feel like they take more skill and thought than 2P games because there are more variables.

If you know of anyone else who would be interested in this, let them know about it!

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Ranger
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:49:28 am »
It should be added that it's also riskier than Smithy, in that if your engine ever whiffs, it can be a lot harder to get back on track.  Ranger is more reliable than Smithy if you can play it for +5 cards to start, letting you draw the rest of your deck to do awesome stuff and flipping your Journey token again to set up for the next turn.  But if you ever fail to follow through and flip that token, it'll be a disaster.

I remember a 3p game with both Ranger and Giant where my Giant-heavy opponent trashed one of my Rangers after they were gone, leaving me with an odd number of Rangers in my deck. I was worried that this would completely kill my engine, but since it only made a difference the turn after next I was able to win without there being a problem. But that is a consideration for Ranger, that if somehow you end up with an odd number it can be a problem.

Yay, new iPhone 7 coming out and guess what, there's no headphone jack. You'll have to connect Apple approved Bluetooth wireless headphones if you want to listen to your music now. Another $100. I like Apple products, but I'm getting really sick of this blatant rip-off. I don't care if the phone is thinner. If anything, I want it bigger, so at least the battery life is better.

This is why I dislike Apple. I'm not really a big fan of their products, but I'll admit that they make some quality stuff. But the fact that they make the only hardware that runs their software means that they can pull stuff like this, forcing you to buy extra equipment if you want to use their software at all. If a manufacturer for hardware that runs Android, Windows, or whatever software competing with Apple tried this, they would lose business. But that's just me, no hard feelings towards anyone who likes Apple.

I'll be streaming my match against mumposaur about 12 hours from now, at 9pm EST.  I'm also uploading all of my matches to YouTube, in case you miss them and want to see them.

Edit: not playing my league match today, but I'll still be streaming.  We'll probably play our match sometime tomorrow.

Instead of talking about it you could just try to do it. My next tournament hasn't even started and my previous one is over.

Yeah, feel free to "/in" if you want to participate.  I'm still open to suggestions for how people would like to see this run, and if people are interested at all.  But if we do get enough people, then I'll finalize the rules and we can get this thing kicked off.

Dingan - Micha1980 - faust
Chris is me - traces Around - gkrieg13

Rules:

There are four rounds, each of which lasts 2 weeks.  This is to give people a chance to schedule a time together, which could be tricky.  If this is not long enough, PM me and we can make something work.  You may play your matches sooner if all players agree to it, but I will be reminding people when their round is scheduled to start.  You may also split your matches up over multiple days if that is more convenient.

Each match consists of 6 games, with each player going first twice.  This will require you to do the Making Fun dance, which is fortunately easier than previous iterations.

After the match, one player will post the results in this thread, stating which match it was and the results of each game, preferably with game logs to alleviate confusion.  If game logs are not included, please use the following format:
Game 1:
1st – [Player 1]; 2nd – [Player 2]; 3rd – [Player 3]
Game 2:
1st – [Player 3]; 2nd – [Player 1]; 3rd – [Player 2]
Etc.

Scoring will be as such, for each game:
8 points for 1st place
4 points of 1st place tie
2 points for 2nd place
1 point for 2nd place tie
0 points for 3rd place

If they choose to do so, the three players with the most points at the end of the season may play a playoff match to determine the winner.  Otherwise, the player with the most points at the end of the season wins.

Please do not resign or quit.  Any game not played through to the end will be counted as incomplete and will have to be replayed.  If you believe that the outcome of the game (all three places) was inevitable, and all players agree, you may include it in your results.

If anyone has a problem with the rules, please PM me.  If enough people disagree with a certain part of the rules, I will be happy to change it.  If a player wishes to drop out, they will be replaced.

Original post (for posterity):

With all of the talk around new online tournaments, I've been interested in getting a 3-player online tournament going.  If there's interest for this, I'd be willing to organize one, or if someone else wants to that would be cool.  The biggest issue would probably be scheduling, and therefore my idea is to have the matches be less frequent, maybe one every 2 weeks.  Depending on how many people are interested, this could go on for a few months, which is totally fine.  I also know that many people really have an aversion to 3-player games, so that's another advantage of the matches being less frequent, so players don't get sick of the format.

Ideas for rules include:
3-game matches, with each player going first once
Each player is guaranteed to play each other player at least once, with possible repeats as necessary
Scoring can be weighted in such a fashion as 5 points for a win, 2 points for 2nd place, 3 points each for a tie
A playoff match between the top 3 players after the regular schedule is complete
No resignations or quits; any game not played through to the end is invalid (this is much more important in 3P)
Any other suggestions that people might have

If I'm running this tournament, I'd be fine with not playing, although I'd love to see some streams.  Let me know what you think of this idea and if you'd be interested in participating or helping out in any way.  This also doesn't have to start right away, maybe after Limetime's current tournament is done.

I'd say Messenger, Forager, or Scout would look best on a wall, although yeah, definitely you should go with Scout since it's your thing.  I can't imagine there would be any copyright things to worry about; it's your own room.  Also, this sounds awesome!

Well, it's nothing new or anything, but that last turn was pretty fun and was something I hadn't done before.  I played a lot of games with this person where we both went for totally different strategies that were pretty equal, which was a lot of fun.

Anyway, I predict we will get a 10VP token, and I would not be surprised if they put extra tokens in this time to account for more players or games where a lot of VP is generated like Goons.

I really doubt there will be a 10 VP token. If there were a higher value, I think it'd be something like 20 or 25, since 10 only saves one extra token on your mat. It would feel like a waste of tokens to have a value so close to 5.

Why would all the Spoils end up in the trash? Are you trashing them with Bishop for +VP or something? That doesn't seem like an amazing reason to go for Bandit Camp.

Well, it is the only way of constantly getting Bishop fuel without losing the ability to gain components at the same time.

Is it really worth it for just the +1VP per Bishop?
It's for destroying spoils.

For that, we have Marpia Real (from the computer-made Dominion cards):

Quote
Marpia Real
$4, Action

You may play an Action card from your hand and trash the Spoils pile.
(This is not in the Supply.)

Even when you don't play all treasure online, you still don't get to choose which order you discard things, and the unplayed treasure often ends up on top.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's Discuss Adventures Cards: Messenger
« on: March 02, 2016, 12:57:25 pm »
Most of what I've seen people say about this card is it's useful in mirrors to give your opponent a copy of a card they only need one of (such as Potion or Chapel). I feel like it's much more useful in non-mirrors, giving your opponent a card they clearly don't need, like a village when they're playing a slog or a silver when they're trying to get super thin. It won't usually actively hurt their deck, but the second card helps you much more than it does them, especially if you already needed Messenger in your deck. Simply, I think Messenger will be most useful when it helps you and doesn't particularly help your opponent, more so than trying to hurt your opponent.

One thing to note is this is one of the Adventures cards I've played with the least, so most of this is assumption. I'm now putting this on my list of cards to try to include next Friday night (Dominion night yay!)

One thing that bothers me about the online implementation, almost more than the treasures thing, is that it's very easy to tell when your opponent has actions in hand that they're choosing not to play. I'd like it if you still had to click "end actions" even if you had no actions in hand. Of course, MF, this isn't going to happen, but it'd still be nice.

Infthitbox and I will be playing our match at 9PM (21:00) tonight EST. That's 10 hours from now. I believe we're both planning to stream it, so you get your pick of whose stream to watch. If you can't choose, I think there's a way to watch both at the same time.
