Yeah, I'm voting Pulsars.  I agree it would be too obvious for Dominion to win on this forum 8).  Lego Bricks and Hexachordal Combinatoriality were mine.  I specified Lego Bricks because "Legos" is technically incorrect.

Let's Discuss ... / Re: Let's discuss Alchemy cards: Alchemist
« on: April 19, 2016, 11:05:22 pm »
I feel like I'm very bad at playing Alchemist, and knowing when to go for it. I've been beaten by opponents who went for it when there didn't seem to be a good payload and I've been beaten going for it when I saw what I thought was good payload. What makes you want to go for alchemist and what makes you want to ignore it?

Actually, I was just screaming in rage, but the vocoder took what I said and translated it to what infamous terrible line. It's quite pitiable, really. I try not to scream now.

That's not how a vocoder works though.

Maybe he means his screams were the carrier signal and George Lucas's voice was the modulator.

Lego Bricks
Pulsars

This is tough, Lego and Dominion are pretty much my two biggest hobbies. I've played Dominion for like 2 years and played with Lego basically my whole life so I'll go with Lego.

Usually I play by the rules as written. One time I was playing a 4p game, and two of the players really didn't know what they were doing and both opened with Ferry on Stonemason and proceeded to empty the Duplicate pile by turn 4 or something crazy like that. The other player and I were more serious about the game and thought the kingdom was interesting, so we made a house rule for that game that Duplicate wouldn't count for a 3-pile.

The only card I can't think of any use for so far is Harvest. Maybe if it's a 9 Scout 1 Harvest kingdom. Harvest BM is better than BM.

I've had several games where I've given my opponents Harvest with Swindler (later when I don't want to run the Duchies) and they've used them to buy Provinces and win. So that's why I remember Harvest.

A few notes about events:
Siege seems slightly broken. With Travelling Fair and your events which give +2 buys, get 2 of these in play and immediately have unlimited buys. That might be a cool feature with Travelling Fair, but with your Decay, that's a combo that instantly empties the supply. I think there's a reason you can't change the cost of events.
Also in your description of Market Day, out seems like you're assuming that Travelling Fair's top-decking is mandatory. It's optional. Not sure if that will make you reevaluate Market Day, but just something to note.
Overall, cool cards.

Edit: a wording thing (and I don't know if this has been said), but I'm pretty sure events aren't in the supply. Is this right?

I almost always end up forgetting that Stonemason is on the board and end up paying $7 for a $5 when I could have gotten two $5s. I'm getting a little better at this but still miss it a lot.

I'm pretty sure the original suggestion in regards to alternate art was to have the option to use the art from the separate Base Cards set instead of the big numbers, which I would be quite happy about. I'm not sure when the idea of different art for kingdom cards came up; that sounds a little weird.

Faster games in general, more big money approaches --> less interesting games.

Sad story, in other words. No one likes curses, but they are here for a good reason.

Curses are a blessing and a...

Drawback? Penalty? "Malus?" What are you going for here?

Curses are a blessing and a... curse.

. . . no, I don't think that's it.

Being a blessing and a curse is an expression, so I think that's probably it.

Explaining the joke: I think he's being sarcastic.

So your Quaker meeting plays Dominion and builds blanket forts. Wow.

That's pretty much young-adult Quakers for you. I'd like to try silent IRL Dominion sometime, but it'd have to be with people who really know the game.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: When did you start playing Dominion
« on: April 14, 2016, 10:55:05 pm »
The first time I played Dominion was at a Quaker gathering (I'm a Quaker) in July 2014. People had been playing it throughout the week, and someone had left it in the blanket fort. My friend who had just played her first game decided to teach two of us how to play. We dealt out 10 randomizer cards, which included some of the basic treasures so we were confused. After we had gotten a few turns in, the owner of the game came in and told us we were doing it wrong; for one thing we had shuffled the randomizers in with the rest of the cards. We then played one of the suggested games. I bought a few Gardens, thinking this is such a good card, it makes use of all the cards I buy in the end! They were worth like 2 points and I lost.
A few days later, some guy had Prosperity and we played a 6 player game with Goons and King's Court, except with the house rule that you couldn't King's Court a King's Court. I'm not sure why, but it was after that game that I knew I had to get Dominion.
So the next semester I ordered the big box on Amazon. I didn't play all that much during the year, but it was about a year before I won my first game. I found the strategy wiki and started reading that more and more.
And then the next year, at the 2015 big Quaker gathering, I brought Dominion with me. And played it several times every day. And won a lot. The person who had first introduced me to Dominion was now really into Ascension. I played it twice and won both times (the first time by a lot and the second time by one point) but it just wasn't the same. And throughout the rest of the summer I just couldn't stop reading articles on the wiki and playing online.
For my birthday in August, all I asked for was Amazon gift cards. I bought all of the expansions and got them the first day of that semester. And I got the rest of the promos over the next few months.
Since then, I've had a pretty steady group of people who play IRL every week, and that group was a large part of how I got to know my girlfriend. Also I decided to start posting on the forums, and I found all of you awesome people. Now that I'm leaving college, I've been worried that I'll lose most of my friends and my community. But then I realized I'm part of this community, and I'll stay part of this community no matter where I live. So thanks guys!

Wow, that post was a lot more than "when did I start playing Dominion?". It may sound cheesy, but Dominion had really done a lot for me since I started playing less than 2 years ago.

I get bored really fast with the pick-a-card-to-associate-with-another-card-and-the-best-one-wins games. Sometimes, I use alternate playing methods, such as drawing from the discarded cards. One time, I played "Martha Stewart" in A2A 10 times in a row before anyone noticed. I still have that card in my wallet,  behind my ID. Some people might get mad at this, but we all ended up laughing in the end, as far as I remember.

49 Trader

9 Mercenary
56 Embargo
I, unlike most people, find Urchin fun.

24 Horn of Plenty
41 Trading Post
One of my friends who is a relatively new player really likes trashing cards and really likes Silver. I showed her this card and it was instantly her favorite.

25 Bishop
40 Native Village
Yay Bishop

8 Steward
57 Trade Route
I love it when Trade Route is worth $12.

4 Masquerade
61 Treasure Map

29 Procession
36 Lookout

20 Dame Anna/Knights
45 Expand
I recently played a game with Knights that went more than 40 turns and made me late for class.

13 Forager
52 Pillage

12 Counterfeit
53 Loan

21 Spice Merchant
44 Miser
So underrated

28 Salvager
37 Doctor
The last time I resigned a game it was because of Doctor. I still felt bad about it, because my opponent was doing something good, but it was like 7 turns in and I hadn't done anything useful in the last 3.

5 Remake
60 Farmland

2 Rebuild
63 Transmute
Ugh, pretty much the only reason I'd vote for Transmute here. It's a pretty interesting card though.

31 Moneylender
34 Raze

18 Apprentice
47 Wine Merchant

15 Stonemaseon
50 Trade

10 Jack of All Trades
55 Rats

23 Hermit/Madman

I still don't understand why Junk Dealer isn't a junking attack.

3 Ambassdaor
62 Feast

30 Transmorgrify
35 Remodel

19 Fool's Gold
46 Mint
But having both is better.

The only downside I can think of is that now even more people will say that the league is rigged.  ;) Good luck to both of you!
You are just being hilarious, but obv. if there's an official league then staff will not be allowed to participate.

Yeah, this was of course a joke, I tend to expect that people will play fair as a default.

At some point I will also disappear as a player, just not yet.

That's the saddest thing I've ever heard...

...wait, do you mean just in the league?  Because that isn't nearly as sad.

Yah. I really hope you don't stop playing Dominion just because you own and created the new client. I can understand not playing in tournaments though since some might see that as a conflict of interest.

I also hope you guys don't stop making videos just because you're not in the league. Maybe you can have some videos showcasing new or upcoming features in the client or something.

« on: April 14, 2016, 12:33:08 pm »
I also just realized that deciding whether or not to reveal Moat to the duration-attacks, particularly Haunted Woods, will take quite a bit of foresight. As the attack can sometimes help you, you have to decide before you take your turn whether you would want to topdeck anything at the end of your turn. I can't wait to see these kinds of decisions come up.

I'd have to say my favorite cards are trash-for-benefit, moneylender, remodel, upgrade, and mine.

Then you'll love Bishop, it's such a good card! Also, welcome to f.ds.

In more seriousness though, this news is very heartening. It's so cool to know that two of the best Dominion players in the world will have Dominion as their career.

One thing I hope is that they realize that most people don't like change and that the two interfaces are relatively stylistically similar to Goko/MF and Isotropic respectively.
