Dominion: Empires Previews / Re: Empires Bonus Preview #2: Crown
« on: May 13, 2016, 11:33:10 pm »
I'm happy to have people decide for themselves once they see the set, and interested in what they have to say. And for sure the later expansions are more complex than the earlier ones.

I don't think there's any way though that Empires crosses some complexity line that Adventures did not.

I agree. I think the modifying tokens are the most complex thing introduced to the game, at least IRL.

Still doesn't compare to games with Mission, Outpost and Possession at the same time.

Ah! Which one comes first!?

Outpost/Mission (you choose, but if you choose Mission first, the Outpost turn can't happen), then Possession.

That wasn't so bad. Any reason you'd take the Mission turn first over Outpost?

You misclicked. I don't know why else.

And as of the final preview (Castles) we've seen:
32/76 pieces of card art.
26/60 VP symbols.
6/16 red hexagons.
1/10 uses of "Setup".
1/2 Duration cards.
1/2 ways to trash cards from the Supply.
An Action-Treasure card.
An Event costing $14.
A way to double your money.
No way to bid.

Still no way to bid. Gotta leave us speculating about something. If someone wants to check these numbers that'd be cool; I may have missed something in there.

These are going to take a long time to figure out. What kind of strategy do they go with? Do you want to get them early? When can you ignore them? This is like what Knights should have been.

I'll post this here because it's the only forum game I'm in. I'll be at a retreat over the weekend and I don't know how much time I'll have to focus on this game. I've stated what I think at this point: either e or ii is scum, and it's probably ii. A longer Day 1 is good but all this talk of lynching people who are townie is counterproductive. If Day 1 ends before I get back I hope we lynch scum; if it doesn't I will continue working to make that happen.

Windfall seems weak. If you're drawing your deck, you usually don't want Golds. But I could be wrong there.

I think you're wrong there... quite often you'll build up a great engine that can draw your deck and generate multiple buys; but still only end up with $15 or so money to spend. I remember many games where I've bought a Province and a Silver, then later a Province and a Gold, then finally could move on to 2 Provinces. This gives you a whole new way to build up an engine and then quickly add payload.

Good point. It's also interesting that, along with Tomb, this is completely useless in some games. I guess Donald decided that there are enough cards now that that doesn't matter.

As of the Events preview we've seen:
24/76 pieces of card art.
16/60 VP symbols.
6/16 red hexagons.
1/10 uses of "Setup".
1/2 Duration cards.
1/2 ways to trash cards from the Supply.
An Action-Treasure card.
An Event costing $14.
A way to double your money.
No way to bid.

We've seen at least one of each thing that was teased except the way to bid. I hope that will be our bonus preview for today.

Dominate is really cool. It also feels very final to have something called Dominate in Dominion; I hope this doesn't mean this is the last expansion.

You also cannot take Debt tokens for no reason.
Is there any particular reason to prohibit it? I mean, it looks pretty futile, but we're allowed to play Treasures and even spend coin tokens for no reason.

You have to be able to spend Coin tokens for no reason.  And by definition, your Buy phase lets you play any or all of your Treasures.

More relevant to taking Debt tokens is the fact that you can't pay for no reason. If you have $6 in your pool, you can't just choose to pay $2 for no reason, so that you're left with $4. You have to either buy something, or an effect has to let you pay. (This is relevant for Storyteller.)

Fun fact; Storyteller is suddenly no longer an automatic cantrip!

It never was; there was the -$1 token. Also, since you can't pay off debt in your action phase, it has no effect on Storyteller.

I was just thinking about this, and I think that Landmarks will be easier to explain to newer players than Events. I've had many people ask about Events something along the lines of "so do I just buy this and then take it, and it goes in front of me and I can use it whenever I want?" With Landmarks it's much easier to explain that it's basically like an extra rule for that game. Of course the strategic implications might be harder to grasp than Events, but what can you do.

To me, all those landmarks look really strong so far to the extent where you can not ignore them should they be on the board. Definitely changes the way you play a kingdom significantly, I hope they don't dominate as much as I think they will.

They will certainly change how we play and think about scoring, bit the game still has to end in the same way that any other game ends. It won't be as big a shift as it seems at first, I think.

I wonder how often a Great Hall/Great Hall opening will be good on a Battlefield board.

Island will certainly become better.

Maybe someone has already asked this, but can you overpay for Stonemason with Debt? Like I can get a Stonemason, a City Quarter, and a Royal Blacksmith for $2 now and $8 later?
I would be shocked if the answer is yes. I believe it's "cost in coins".

But you can overpay for Stonemason with Potion.

I'm surprised so many people are still voting for Joseph. I thought we had determined he was probably town.

Iguana is trying to play like Awaclus (I don't know why), and sometimes he forgets and reverts to his normal playstyle, i.e. the huge argument trying to prove e wrong. That could potentially be revealing, as that written accusation by e (who was L-2 at the time) really cut deep into II's psyche. I don't think it's too much to read into until later on though. Seriously, can we get to the e lynch?

Actually seprix might not be town. This post is weird. "Here's why ii might be scum! But we can look at that later, Lynch e now."

I mean, I get that. I'm pretty sure that one of them is scum, and it's way more likely to be ii. If one of them flips town though, we really need to look at the other.

Mafia Game Threads / Re: M80: Fruit Ninja Mafia (Day One)

So here's my start to a case on ii. He's coming right out of the gates in his first post going after e. At first it's for opportunistic voting, but then he builds his case further from there. This is a case that goes back to just as we were getting out of rvs. Nothing e had done by that point looked particularly scummy (at least not to me). His entire game revolves around pushing e's lynch, with a brief diversion to Joseph.

I voted for ii pretty early on in order to get a better read on him. Then he did this:
We might butt heads this game because I've been trying to play more like Awaclus.

I really don't like this post. Basically I've expressed some suspicion on him, I think I was the only one so far, and he gives a reason why any reads I have on him might be skewed. Saying that he's trying to play more like Awaclus, one of the scummiest-by-default players on f.ds, looks to me like excusing any scummy behavior we see from him in the future. The thing is, he's not even resembling Awaclus that much; he's just scummy.

It does seem a little risky for scum!ii to go all out on e from the beginning, but then again having clear reads and sticking to them is generally a town tell. The problem is that when ii started going after e, it was way too early for clear reads.

So there's my case on ii, all laid out in words. I'm keeping my vote on him; I think our best option is to lynch him now.

Here is my conclusion:

e is spot on. iguanda is scum. vote: iguanda

This isn't a fakehammer. Did you spell his name wrong on purpose?

there is no d in his name!  :o

erm, no. maybe that's a sign? Let's vote: Haddock instead.

No... stupid idea. vote: iguana

It might very well have counted anyway, btw. That's up to the mod's discretion.
You've always spelt it like that and I've always assumed it was a joke I didn't get.

Has anyone collected together a case on iguana? I feel like he's done a few weird things, but I'd like to see them all at once to get a sense (preferably next to a list of towny things he's done).  Maybe I'll do that myself when I get a chance.  Jeez I really need to go get stuff done right now though.  Freaking mafia, distracting me all the time.

I'm going to work on that right now. I'm feeling like iguana is the best lynch.

I really like that they replace one or two of the events instead of adding on to them. It would be crazy if every game could have up to two of each. This is especially good since I always play with 2 events, so these plus the new events will spice that up a whole bunch.

There is no rules restriction on either number of events or the number of landmarks.

That's true, but I like the suggestion of having 0-2 from the pool of Landmarks and Events rather than having 0-2 of each.

As of the Landmarks preview we've seen:
21/76 pieces of card art.
14/60 VP symbols.
5/16 red hexagons.
1/10 uses of "Setup".
1/2 Duration cards.
1/2 ways to trash cards from the Supply.
An Action-Treasure card.
No Event costing $14.
A way to double your money.
No way to bid.

I'm only including things we've actually seen in the previews, not things that we've been told exist.

I still think gkrieg is town, for whatever that's worth. It's still too early in the day for me to process the whole ii - e thing.
