Dominion General Discussion / Re: Dutch Nocturne is here.
« on: November 01, 2018, 11:19:51 am »
I'll see what I can do. Will probably meet up with the aforementioned friend next Wednesday, and then I can ask him whether he plans on buying Dutch Nocturne. If so, we'll move from there.

Any update on this? So far I've tried different boards but no luck yet.

Sadly, no update on this. We've kinda been preoccupied with Great Western Trail, board game-wise.

Honestly I'm not going to buy Nocturne just so the Wiki can be updated, so as long as my friend doesn't buy it there's not a whole lot I can provide...

When's it going to be released? This is very late October. Will it be November till we see all the cards?

The latest info still says sometime this week.

Dominion: Renaissance Previews / Re: Your reviews of the previews
« on: October 23, 2018, 04:25:43 am »
Well there aren't many villages outside the - range.

These days there are many with Lost Arts and other tricks.

The cards I tend to upgrade with Adventures tokens tend to be on the cheap side. I'd rather Lost Arts a Candlestick Maker or Pearl Diver than a Mystic (to name examples where the Lost Arts create actual splitters).

Lost Arts on a card with +1 Action is amazing on a board with no other Villages. In fact, it's almost required if you actually want to have an engine. Lost Arts on Smithy seems nice until you realize you committed yourself to a single terminal. Which is possible sometimes, but still.

"Spices" seems a bit strange for a card name. Maybe it's a treasure?

Likely. That way you could Spice Merchant some Spices.

I'm probably not going to buy it myself - I just don't like it enough, honestly, and I prefer to wait for Renaissance which seems a LOT better at first glance - but a friend of mine is probably going to buy it.

Is there anything specific you have in mind for the Wiki? Just Dutch card names or something else?

Game Reports / Re: Dear My Opponent: I am Sorry

Is there an "awww"- thread? I just met an opponent playing with Rats for the first time. They ended up with a deck consisting of.. 20 rats. So cute.

Are you sure you played against a human being?

As the sole trasher on a board with other potion cost cards, it can be decent, but probably never great.

Yeah. Transmute has a very tiny chance of being barely usable. It's about in the same vein as Scout, honestly - except Scout doesn't officially exist anymore (although I own a first edition Intrigue set so I can still play with it, and sometimes do if it shows up in a full random).

What's your main misgiving about working with big data from the online implementation?
When did you stop beating your wife? I don't have misgivings about working with data from the online implementation.

You just don't seem to do it despite having plenty of good opportunities and reasons to do so.

Man, I really don't get why people continually antagonize Donald X.  It's almost like you all want him to stop answering questions on the forum again.

Man, I really don't get why people feel that Donald X. should be shielded from all forms of criticism. It's almost like you all want him to have your babies or something.

Dominion Online at Shuffle iT / Re: Previews

I missed the previews. When can I play with the new cards? They look awesome :)
Probably very late October.

That's fairly quick. Thanks!

Gear/Trade might be the fastest BM option out there. I happened to stumble upon it recently:

Kudos for finding that one! I'm going to have to try it out.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Favorite Expansions in 2018
« on: July 25, 2018, 01:29:54 pm »
I mean I played with a family member once and all they bought were treasures and victories, sure they won. But they hardly ever play it because it wasn’t any fun. The actions make it fun.

Want to build an engine? If there's King's Court, there's a way.

Challenge:
Kingdom is King's Court, Throne Room, Treasure Map, Vampire, Prince, Coin of the Realm, Duplicate, Quarry, Silk Road and Outpost.

(even this kingdom should have better strategies than just buying VP and Treasure, though)

You can make a kingdom from just Prosperity cards where it's useless: King's Court, Watchtower or Counting House, and all 8 kingdom treasures.

Proverbs have exceptions.

Sentry and Count are MUCH worse at trashing if you get them after the second reshuffle (actually they're worse after the first, but they go off a cliff from there).

That's a good point, actually - some trashers are inherently more clunky if your good cards-to-junk ratio changes. Lookout comes to mind as well.

42
Well, yeah, all of the Action/Treasure cards that you buy are better to have in your hand than Copper or Estate, barring edge cases. Therefore, it is pretty much always better to get them early rather than late.

However, the cards where the difference is biggest are the cards you usually want to open with. Trashers are top of the list, and since Chapel is the best trasher in the game (other than Donate but you don't have to worry about shuffles there), it is the ultimate the-earlier-the-better card. Other than trashers, junkers and gainers also tend to be amazing in the opening. Drawing and economy are not AS important as you can add them later on and still be fine, as long as your deck remains balanced (i.e. don't over- or undertrash).

All this assumes that there is a reasonable engine you can play with. If not, then trashers and gainers are not so great. Junkers remain amazing almost regardless of the board, and Silver/Gold gainers can be added to the list in a BM or slog strategy.

4) Shuffle iT's implementation is sometimes very slow, which is probably at least partially because it's a browser client, not a standalone.

[...]

Honestly if Stef gets his ShiT together and does something about points 2, 3, and 4 [...]

You haven't just noticed that, have you?

Every once in a while I still get annoyed that Dominion got a worse online client than before for double the prize. But what can you do.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: News on the Dutch Nocturne.

Dutch versions always take a long time to complete somehow, so I don't expect Nocturne to actually be in stores by September. Nevertheless, thanks for the update :)

buying your guardian to feed your exorcist

Oh man, I forgot about this combo. Specifically I love buying a Den of Sin and immediately turning it into a Ghost.

It's a haunted brothel!

A general thought on Alchemy and cards that require a Potion to purchase. There are a number of really good cards here, but I think they get dissed because they require a Potion to purchase so we don't use them a lot since you generally need a few Potion Kingdom cards to make it worthwhile to buy a Potion.
That's a common misconception. Most of the Potion-cost cards avoid that issue by being strong in multiples; getting one Potion so you can get five Alchemists is a pretty strong move.

I agree, the idea that you need multiple Potion cards on the board before they are any good is just wrong. Apothecary, University, Alchemist, Scrying Pool, Familiar, Vineyard and to a lesser extent Golem and Possession are often worth it even if they are the only Potion card available. Only Transmute and Philosopher's Stone are useless on their own, but they are generally useless even if there are other Potion cards.

47
Not useful, but certainly neat.

When you play an Enchantress, it covers the first Action card played during a turn... Which includes a Werewolf in the Night Phase.

Or a Crown in the Buy phase, right?

48
Thanks to Ambassador, I managed to buy a Province and trash TWO Hovels. There’s no way it was the best play and I knew that at the time, but when am I ever going to have a chance like that again?
Hovel doesn't have a pile to be returned to, so you can't actually transfer them using Ambassador. Masquerade would work, though.

I had that situation come up in an IRL game, where one player passed the other his Hovel (can't remember if it was me or my opponent) and then the other bought something like Great Hall to trash two Hovels.

Full Random is also a lot harder for players who don’t know everything already.

True. If I play with newer players, I usually play Base the first 2-3 games and then maybe add 1 or 2 expansions if they want.

In real life, we choose two or three expansions and randomise cards out of those. Everything else would be too much of a hassle. This allows for more situations for shelters or colonies as well.

Actually, I own seven sets and I still usually play full random. It helps that I have all of my cards stored in maps instead of the original boxes.
