Goko Dominion Online / Failed to connect to server.
« on: May 30, 2014, 10:23:33 pm »
Wandered back after a bit of a hiatus and I could play last night but now it won't let me log in.  What's up?

Also: what's all this about making fun or whatever?

Also: any news on any dominion-related front in the last few months?

27
Nothing that keeps track of rules, obviously, just something that can handle shuffling and drawing and moving stuff around (and my idea is a deckbuilder, so maybe a way to add and remove cards mid-game) so I can play test games without having to make a mockup with index cards.

28
It was running fine on this connection earlier today, and other sites are working fine, so I wonder if something is up in Gokoland? (Or with the extension?)

29
I come from a forum where we like to vote on stuff and have big overblown tournaments, so I thought I'd see if it could garner any interest here.  I may or may not actually follow through, but I'm obviously more likely to do so if people actually wanna see it.

What I'm thinking is:
  • Divide the 205 (by my count?) cards up into kingdoms (there'd be a play-in round, too)
  • Allow people to vote on what they consider the "key cards" in each kingdom (allowing votes for as many or as few cards as you feel necessary)
  • The top X cards (usually 5) move onto the next round, and are re-sorted into new random (or seeded?) kingdoms, and the process repeats until we're down to the last kingdom and the top 10 cards.

Details:
  • Young Witch will have the Bane randomly generated and noted, but you won't be able to vote for it.
  • Colonies and Shelters will be decided in accordance with the official rules.
  • Black Market will not be specified, nor will the order of Knights.
  • The play-in round would consist of some assortment of the bottom-most cards from the Qvist lists, with five cards being eliminated to make things even.

Potential issues:
  • "What are key cards here?" is a pretty vague question that I could see being a source of contention.
  • It's mostly a just for fun thing that, due to random kingdoms and single elimination, could overrate or underrate some cards and won't give a particularly definitive "what's the best card" answer.
  • It's a lot of topics and it could wind up clogging up the board even at the rate of one every couple of days.
  • Does this poll mechanism even support being able to vote for multiple things?

Goko Dominion Online / How's Goko these days?
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:47:42 pm »
I haven't given them a shot since around the time Dark Ages was coming out IRL, but....Guilds is coming out, and my IRL Dominion friends are about to move across the country, so it's time to either hop on the Goko train or abandon Dominion for good.  Is the security improved?  Rules implemented okay?  Extension in the sticky topic helpful?  Decently easy to find a match?  Stability within acceptable bounds?

And if I do make the switch, what's the current most efficient way to buy the sets?

Variants and Fan Cards / Goofy idea I'm working on.
« on: April 04, 2013, 01:11:01 am »
I sometimes like to take games and make them into things for other games in my head, and this came from one of those.

Random Quest: This card is not in the Supply.  [Whatever the Knights text says]  Also, add a different pile to the Supply.

Each individual card is different, and behaves like the Knights in that respect.  They all have the following text in common:

$0 Action

+2 Card
+2 Action
---
This card is not in the supply.  You may immediately claim it at any time during your turn if you [X]

[X] varies by card, and has requirements like:
-Have at least 7 cards in your hand
-Have at least $10 available
-Have no cards in your deck or discard
-Have at least 5 actions in play
-Have at least 3 actions available
-Have at least 3 buys available
-Reveal three victory cards from your hand
-Reveal four treasure cards from your hand
-Reveal a hand with no duplicates
-Reveal a card costing $7 or more from your hand

The basic idea is that you have some slightly tricky random requirement, but if you can pull it off, you get a snazzy card for free.

Issues/Questions:

-How should I best handle gaining?  I would rather it be in the Supply, but couldn't find a simple and balanced way to do it.  I don't really want it buyable or gainable, at least not easily.  I did think about making it a regular supply card that's just overpriced- you CAN buy or gain one if you really want to, and it works well for TfB, but it's not something you're likely to fool with if you can't hit the requirement.

-How can I best balance the requirements?  I would like to have requirements that take SOME luck/intentionality to pull off, but not ones that will get "stuck" for the entire game if there is absolutely no way to do it or if it's too hard.  Maybe a way to cycle the pile somehow?

-How should I balance the reward?  I figure +Card/+Action is pretty much always helpful, but it's kinda boring.  Maybe something with VP?  Or I could even personalize it to the requirement (like the big hand one lets you discard for benefit, or the treasures one gives you +buy, stuff like that)

Obviously it needs some polish, but I think it's an interesting idea even if it doesn't turn out to be a good one.

Innovation Game Reports / Perspective is kinda scary sometimes! [log]
« on: March 27, 2013, 07:42:29 pm »
http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/27/game-20130327-163822-081cc2a6.html

Wheel gives me enough cards to feed to Perspective, directly giving me Monument as well as a surplus of points to claim the last two achievements!  I don't know what I'm doing well enough for this to be much more than a happy accident, but I feel this was probably one of my best games so far.

Today was not that day:

http://innovation.isotropic.org/gamelog/201303/18/game-20130318-213223-fbc8d236.html

I was cackling evilly as I made that last play, too.

Dominion Videos and Streams / Let's Play Dominion!
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:33:02 pm »
I guess this would be a good place to post this?  I am making a Dominion Let's Play. It's more to highlight isotropic and Goko than anything, but I'm also trying to provide a crash course in the game itself for those that might be unfamiliar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kL9OMVYsVkU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HFGtqefiN0

Obviously this forum is a bit more into Dominion than the target audience, but I would still appreciate any input you might have!  Particularly any other intricacies of the game I should be sure to cover, or isotropic-specific information.

Variants and Fan Cards / Cash4Gold
« on: November 19, 2012, 01:12:59 am »
Every so often I see things and for some reason really want to figure out what they would do in Dominion.  My inspiration this time is all those pawn shops that will buy gold off of you.

$4 Action

+1 Card
+1 Action

You may trash a Gold from your hand.  If you do, +$4 and +1 Buy.

I had a hard time balancing against Salvager, which is why I wound up making it a cantrip- it's also low risk this way.  I feel it's still missing something, though....maybe if I let it trash from the discard?  That might be too strong, though...

I tripped over this combo going for an awkward Silk Road rush deck.

Goko Dominion Online / Goko is making me forget how to play Dominion!
« on: September 22, 2012, 12:17:39 am »
I actually kinda like the graphical presentation, but it looks like every other card game on the internet now, so I approach it like every other card game on the internet and just kinda buy stuff I feel like without thinking super hard about anything.  I am hardly a great player but either serfbot is surprisingly awesome or the transition to goko has set my ability back about 10 iso levels.  :(

Goko Dominion Online / Do we trust them with credit cards yet?
« on: September 21, 2012, 03:42:09 pm »
I don't know nothin' 'bout no security, but I know there were concerns in the past.  On the other hand, Dark Ages!

Other Games / Thunderstone: How do I?
« on: September 21, 2012, 11:26:36 am »
I found Thunderstone on Kongregate, and thought, hey, deckbuilders!  I am pretty sure I grasp the rules and stuff, but there's a campaign mode, and I am stuck on the very first level.  With Ascension, I was able to reliably beat the hard AI within a few games, but here I am doing well to get a competitive loss.  How does basic strategy work?  Isn't the elf mage basically superior to the amazon archer for less cost?

Rules Questions / A few (mostly DA) questions from earlier tonight.
« on: September 08, 2012, 12:01:57 am »
-I can still reveal Market Square when trashing a Fortress, right?
-Do Processed Durations still provide their effects?  How about Lighthouse specifically?
-If I KC a KC, and use that on a Duration, do both KC's stay out?
-If I Counterfeit a Copper, can I buy a GM?
-How does Counterfeit work with FG?
-Madman and Mercenary count as $0 cards, and can be Swindled and TfB'd as such, correct?

This is confusing o_o

Dominion General Discussion / Island
« on: September 06, 2012, 12:35:45 pm »
I've almost always just used Island exclusively for dead cards that I can't or don't want to trash, but it occurs to me that this probably isn't the best plan.  Is it worth it to also use it on weak-but-not-useless cards like Copper?  What if there's some other trasher on the board that can get those (like Spice Merchant or Moneylender, say) and you want the Islands mainly to use on green?

Dominion General Discussion / General Priorities
« on: August 22, 2012, 01:15:10 am »
I realize this is an incredibly open-ended question that will mostly depend on the board and the situation, but given two cards you want, at a similar price point, synergy with the rest of the board, and power level, do you first go for an attack or a deck improver?  Is it best to get a quick attack in and cripple your opponent, or to get your deck flowing nicely so you can get both of those actions quickly?

Some day...

Goko Dominion Online / Do we know when exactly it's going up?
« on: August 16, 2012, 12:07:22 am »
It's now the 16th on the east coast!  I have my fingers crossed that I'll get to play before bed, because I am quite curious.

Variants and Fan Cards / Recursive Victory
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:09:58 pm »
This card is worth 1 VP for every copy of this card in your deck at the end of the game. (this copy included)

Good idea?  Bad idea?  Cost?  I think 5 sounds about right.  You need to take the lion's share to equal Provinces, and your opponent can pick up just three to stop you and they'd work as Duchies for them.

Dominion General Discussion / The kingdom is your top 10 favorite cards.
« on: August 13, 2012, 01:12:26 am »
What do you run?

For me, the board is Familiar, Golem, Fishing Village, Trader, Mountebank, Tactician, Grand Market, Goons, Hoard, King's Court.

I think Familiar is a trap here, and Golem's not worth it.  I probably open Trader/FV (not like there's tons of choice) and try to get one Mountebank and then one Tactician ASAP.  After that, I will probably go for some crazy combo of all four $6+ cards, making as much as I can of the +Buy and Trading anything crappy.  I might even wind up skipping Platinum and going for Provinces or a three-pile instead of Colonies....but more likely my opponent would outspeed me because I'm having too much fun with my ridiculous but slow engine.

47
My buddy doesn't seem interested in moving to Goko, so I might try to get one last online game in with him and maybe all our favorite cards.

Puzzles and Challenges / Speed Challenge: 48 Fairgrounds points
« on: August 10, 2012, 03:36:32 pm »
How quickly can you get 48 VP (or more) worth of Fairgrounds?  Assume a solo game with perfect shuffle luck.  This is my first challenge topic, so forgive me if I screwed up something.

Hard Mode: You may only buy base cards, Fairgrounds, Black Market, and whatever you pull out of the BM deck.

Insane mode: Forget perfect shuffle luck and post your best iso log.

I am not actually good at these so I don't have a baseline to give you.  I'm just curious!

For a while people were talking about FunSockets, and now they're talking about Goko.  As an outsider to the beta, (>:() I was wondering whether they're interchangable terms or I missed something.

Dominion Isotropic / Why do so many people decline automatches?
« on: August 02, 2012, 02:15:21 am »
I can understand once if there's just a board you find revolting, but if you're going to decline a match multiple times, why are you in automatch?
