Dominion General Discussion / Re: Any downloadable deck generators?
« on: July 22, 2011, 10:27:20 am »
Dominion Minion for $0.99 on the iOS has cornucopia and a nice Black Market interface. I prefer how it deals with Platinum/Colony as well.

It does the Bane card if there is a Young Witch involved as well.

But, without a Smart Phone or internet, you could go to dominiondeck.com before your trip and save some combos.

Here is a site I just found that lets you generate sets off-line, but the images don't seem to load in the off-line mode, but a mouse-over will get you the name.

How about Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts? It is in Dukes County.

It has a Library http://www.vhlibrary.org.

A puppet Festival. http://www.mvgazette.com/article.php?26334

A Chapel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1900_SeamensChapel_VineyardHaven_MA_SeaBreeze_v13.png

And who could forget the Vineyard Haven Wharf? http://history.vineyard.net/wharf.htm

I wonder if there was ever a Pirate Ship nearby?

Throw in 1 Throne Room, and I had 19 points and game over by turn 12. Without optimal shuffle luck. Not great, but interesting.

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Post an interesting set of 10
« on: July 14, 2011, 09:54:50 pm »
I'm always looking to try out new sets of 10 that aren't completely random.  This is one my group and I did recently, just for fun, of course:

Coppersmith
King's Court
Goons
Council Room
Counting House
Chancellor
Worker's Village
Bridge
Bank
Cellar

I should note that even with this array of cards, it was still sometimes better not to rely on copper.  What are some of your favorite/interesting/fun sets?

This one got me thinking...how hard would it be to set up a
Village/Chancellor/Counting House combo, and get 8 coppers in your hand frequently...

Edit: just tried it. I got 2 Prov. on turns 11 and 12, but then not again until 22 and 23. Perhaps I could tweak it a little to make it more optimal.

Rules Questions / Re: Buying vs Gaining
« on: July 14, 2011, 12:56:33 pm »
Pretty important distinction when Embargo is in play. The curse is only given when a card is purchased, but it can be gained without penalty. Easily done through workshop, ironworks, feast, etc.

33
I really, really, really, really, really wish there was a constraint for automatch that was something like, "Only players between Level X and Y."  I almost always decline low level games because I have far more to lose than gain by playing them.  The only card I refuse to play with is Possession for reasons I don't think I need to explain.  If I'm getting too many of them, I'll leave the queue and simply propose a game (which people are less likely to accept, it would seem).

I do think 2 changes would make the automatch more useful/interesting:

a) If a player declines twice in a row, that particular match-up is not proposed again. (Or, if they do not respond with 20-30 seconds, they are removed from the queue.)

b) An option for registered players to be matched with players that are +/- 5 levels. So a Level 12 would be matched up with anyone from 7-17. I guess this would decrease the speed in which you were matched up, but then if that upset you,  you could simply uncheck the box.  I just threw out the value +/- 5, perhaps +/- 10 would work better, who knows.

Village Idiot
$0
Action

+1 Card, +1 Action

A Round for the House
$2
Action-Attack

Discard a copper. If you do, all other players must slam a shot.

Love the Village Idiot! Perfect.

And I think the Round for the House should inspire a whole expansion for the college-aged drinking Dominion subset.

This post has good information in it, but I would make sure you have the consent of both players before you open up their game and discuss all their failings.

I personally would relish the opportunity to have top players critique my mistakes - but I have pretty thick skin and take constructive criticism well. If I did this sort of analysis on my wife's games (for example), she'd never play a game of dominion again. Some people just don't like criticism, especially in a public forum.

Just curious, does this mean that for any user to post a link to a game log, he/she should get the consent of their opponent, in your opinion? It is pretty common practice to say "Hey, I just played this crazy game with such and such cards, here is the {link} log {/link}..."

Dominion General Discussion / Re: 5/2 split and mint..
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:08:56 pm »
I wonder if this would work out:

Turn 1: CCEEE: --> Lighthouse
Turn 2: CCCCC:--> Mint {reshuffle}
Turn 3: CCE, LH, Mint--> Play lighthouse, purchase Silver {reshuffle}
Turn 4: EESCM---> purchase remake
Turn 5: Remake, EE,LH,S---> play lighthouse, remake 2 estates to silvers, purchase another LH
Turn 6: SSEC, Mint---> Purchase Festival (or other +$2 card) {reshuffle}
Turn 7: SSC, LH, Remake--->Purchase Gold
Turn 8: Festival,Mint,S,C,E---> Play Festival, Purchase Gold {reshuffle}
Turn 9: LH,M,E,G,Festival ---> Play Festival, Play Lighthouse, Mint Gold, Purchase Gold
Turn 10: C, G,S,C,Remake---> Play Lighthouse, Purchase Province {reshuffle}
Turn 11: SSS,E,C---> Purchase Province
Turn 12: Festival, Mint, G,G,Prov. ---> Purchase Province {reshuffle}
Turn 13: GGC, Remake, Lighthouse ---> Play LH, Mint Gold, Purchase Province
Turn 14: GGC, Province, Lighthouse ---> Play LH, Purchase Province
Turn 15: Province, Province, GGC---> Purchase Province
Turn 16: Mint, S,S, Province, Estate, --> Purchase Estate (or Garden, or Island, or nothing) {reshuffle}
Turn 17: GG, Festival, Province, Province ---> Purchase Province
Turn 18: G,G,S, P, P--->Purchase 8th Province

OK, silly excercise, takes perfect shuffle luck, but all in all, had enough to buy a Province every turn from Turn 10-15, and 17 and 18.

I guess this just goes to show that Mint is a terrible opening.

If I can play online dominion for a one-time cost - or even just purchase each expansion for a one time cost and then only be able to play other people who have also bought that expansion (or as long as one player at the virtual table has bought the exansion) - I'd sign up.

I wonder if it worked this way, if RGG would include a download code or some sort of voucher when you purchased the physical set. Sort of like when I purchase an LP and it comes with a free digital copy, or now-a-days Blue Rays come with a free digital copy.

I'd be pretty impressed to see a Golem pull a loan.

That is an excellent point you bring up, and well stated.

I think the same could be said for Golem pulling a Throne Room and then a Lookout.

39
I could see some situations where Ringleader could really hurt you, in the same way that a Golem that pulls a Throne Room/Loan late game could hurt.

Dominion Isotropic / Re: Playing on your phone
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:01:48 am »
I just tried my iPhone with the text only version. It worked fine, updated instantly. I only played a few turns of a solitaire game so as not to annoy anyone. There were quite a few mis-clicks, things like buying a copper instead of a silver, just because the buttons are so small.

But it worked fine, and should be playable.

Edit: Just played against myself, iPhone in one hand, laptop in the the other. It was fine. I only bought one card I didn't mean to on the phone, a Navigator. But that turned out OK, because I found out that you cannot re-order the cards when returning them to your deck. I assume this would be the case for other times when this is an option, (Black Market, Stash, etc.)

Chess is several orders of magnitude more popular than Dominion ;)
In the month of June, 2011, do you think more chess sets were sold, or boxes of Dominion?

Variants and Fan Cards / Re: Curse Variants
« on: July 01, 2011, 03:26:28 pm »
Sounds a little similar to a card that was experimented with earlier. I think it was called "confusion" or something. It held a place in your hand, but was without a -1VP.

Ok, your Hex idea sounds similar in that it is the exact opposite. I remember reading that Donald X. didn't like how that card worked.

44

Well probably I count. I'm not into the instrumental stuff, or like Hot Rats, I don't know what to tell you.

We're Only In It For the Money and Absolutely Free are great.
Those are early stuff, right, when he was doing almost a doo-wop thing. Nice. I have to say that Hot Rats is so very listenable and musically interesting, and Filmore surprised me when I listened to it recently, how very well done that show was.

Thanks for sharing.

45
That's about what I'd expect, except I'd think you'd want to make money off it. I would. It seems natural. But man, if that's not a big deal for you, that's cool.
It's not that I want to do work and go unpaid, or that I want to pass up on a cash bonanza if one somehow appears.

It's that "the point" to this, from my perspective, isn't making money. Frank Zappa wasn't "in it for the money" when he made We're Only In It For The Money, but that doesn't mean he turned down his royalty, that somehow he thought he shouldn't get paid or wasn't deserving.

Please tell me you are a FZ fan. That would be so cool.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: Opening of the Day #2
« on: July 01, 2011, 01:49:30 pm »
I like the Chapel better as defense against the attacks, and to avoid the curse and copper tennis match. However, it is susceptible to the Swindler, as it may get turned into an estate. The Ambassador is better suited, as your opponent is forced to turn it into something useful.

Overall, I would be tempted to go with the Chapel/Money, with villages, a Young Witch and a Smuggler supporting cast.  But, if my opponent went with Swindler, I would react with an Ambassador.

If two players match up, and they both either won or lost their previous games, how is turn order decided?
Is that then a coin flip?

48
Thanks for the first article in the series. As someone who has figured out how to get to Level 5, slowly, I look forward to the next article.

I totally agree that one key is to analyze what the winner did. Sometimes your opponent is willing to chat after the game about what they were thinking. For a player in the 0-5 range, this can be an enlightening conversation.

There are so many combinations, it feels overwhelming to a beginner sometimes. A thought may go like this:

"Great, so now I know what I would do with a Watchtower, Goons, and Loan (or whatever), but when will I ever see that again."

But, they should store it away, and the applications of that lesson will serve them.

Thanks again.

The Envoy symbol is a Ferris wheel in Vienna, the city where the con was held where the card was given out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiener_Riesenrad

The Black Market symbol is something the magazine that gave out that card uses. http://www.spielbox-online.de/

Thanks!

I think I have been on that Ferris Wheel. Great views of a beautiful city.

50
Haha just spotted the 'set' symbol at the bottom right of the card  :D
I will likely get this too, just to have it.
Got me thinking about the other set symbols for the promos. I picked them up recently, so any connection like this one has to Carcassone is not clear to me. Black Market has was looks like a spider web, and Envoy has a ferris wheel looking thing.
Any back history on what these mean?
