Dominion Articles / Re: Seaside: Treasure Map

I really dislike Treasure Map, it almost always turns the game into a crapshoot.  There is rarely anything particularly subtle about which enablers to use, and the ~30% chance of hitting on the 3rd shuffle is high enough that those 1/3 games are pretty much over at that point even if there are no enablers.  This is especially true in a multiplayer game.  One of WanderingWinders vlogs of his championship games showed this.  WW played for the Treasure Map, his opponent didn't at the start but hit his maps first.  WW lost.  Treasure Map isn't a power card, but Treasure Map and a slice of luck is near unbeatable*.

*Usual caveats apply - there is no single card in Dominion that is always correct or always wrong.

I'm not sure I follow.  In order to remake things into Colonies you need to reduce their cost to 1 - play 10 cost reductions.  I don't think that's feasible on any board, with the possible exception of KCed bridges.  In which case you have the buys to go nuts with anyway.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.  I don't think this board looks suitable for the turn you're after, unless your opponent is dozing.

I also think treasure stealers, are considered even weaker than they actually are on these forums, because most of us play a lot of 2 player games on isotropic.  In a 4 player game, they're (approximately 3 times) stronger.  In a 2 player game you can almost definitely ignore treasure stealing, in a 4 player game it's sometimes worth thinking about.

All treasure stealers should, in my opinion, have a "you may trash" where they in fact say "trash".

I agree with the sentiment that tunnel belongs on the Best $3 list.

There are very few boards when you can afford to not buy it, when there are no enablers it's really obvious.  Even when there are no enablers it's a really good consolation prize, making estates all but worthless (not that hard, but true none the less).  Gaining gold is a really strong power, it might be competitive even if it had no VPs associated with it.

I'll second the vote for a Swiss system.  You get a final game that's quite a lot like a final that way anyway, and the seeding sorts itself out if it isn't very good to start with.  I played a blood bowl tournament using this format and it worked really well.

Least Favourites: Treasure Map and Swindler.
Both far too random and swingy for my liking.
Possession (which I almost forgot cos it's pretty much omitted from play in my group) isn't very fun either.

Most favourite: Gooooooooooooooons.  I like Outpost, but can never get it to work well.  Native village is pretty good fun too.

So you do some amazing math, find out that Adventurer is better than Gold as soon as the average treasure in your deck is worth 3/2, then you double check with the simulator and find out the idiot bot that buys an Adventurer at first sight will perform as well as the bot that waits until it has some nice money in its deck:

And usually worse than the player who just bought Gold?

Surely in a world without colonies Platinum is overkill, even when you get to 9.

Or am I very, very wrong?

I quite enoy Nightfall. It has a good pacing and feels very tense throughout. Everyone builds a house of cards until one is overwhelmed and falls down.  I think that it suffers a little from kingmaking/get Fred he's winning. It isn't as pure as dominion, but is very good so long as you don't take it too seriously. The action chains are very satisfying. Also, it has Vulko, who is all kinds of awesome.

It won't likely generate this sort of online community, it is quite hard to play to win, but with the right group of mates it's really good fun.

Thunderstone is disappointing. I haven't played any others.

- There was a card, +$2, name a type, dig for it, put it on your deck. It cost $3. You can almost always name a type that isn't in your deck if you want, so it's "strictly better" than Chancellor. This really bothers some people (Anthony Rubbo being one of them). It had to be worse in some way and I didn't want it to be worse.

I like this as an idea for a card; what about adding "If you don't find it, gain a curse."  I still think it's a strong "deck cycling with benefits" card, it's no longer strictly better than a Chancellor.  I'm sure I'm not the first person to have thought of it.  I wonder why (if) it was rejected....

Until it was pointed out here, I hadn't realised how fortunate my turns 3-4 were.  Though my opponent did get a 5+2 start, which was also ideal for this board... maybe...

I'll get my coat.

It's pretty uninspiring usually, however, I've seen it used effectively to use native village as a poor man's island. As mentioned previously, it's excellent for goons/conspirators and can be handy for forge too.

Sure, I saw the kingdom set and knew there was only one valid strategy.  I'm not sure you could add anything to this set to better facilitate the gooning except perhaps watchtower.  Not particularly complex so I'm not that proud, but it was certainly very entertaining to play.  2 cards with cost 2 that were +1 card, +1 action - score!  I am currently 8-0 on Isotropic - and feeling very fortunate.

Hello all, haven't posted here before but I love the site.  Lots of interesting debate which is rare for the internet.

The kingdom suggested I should Goon like crazy, so I did.

Perhaps this should go in the "sorry to my opponent" thread too, I can't help but feel that getting the first goon was a monumental swing factor in this game.  I was after it from the word go in my defence.

As an aside, I love the image for Goons used on the Isotropic site.  It made me grin!
