It happens pretty often, not gonna lie, post was a joke though.  I'm definitely not a level 30 player

The level 30s get beaten by level 40 players hiding as level 1s

Governor + hand-reducing attack is definitely brutal (See turn 13):

I haven't seen it come up since this game, but if I ever do it'll definitely be a strong consideration.  Epic card advantage no matter what way you look at it really.

Dominion Articles / Re: Updating the Top 5 lists
« on: December 06, 2011, 04:31:10 pm »
I'm going to start posting updated 2011 versions of these each week, though it shouldn't take the place of the Monday articles.  The Worst $2 Cards will appear this Friday.

So this is your last chance to get in your input!  The list this time is going to have less of the "cards that are annoying to play against" and be a more serious attempt at ranking the cards.

I would disagree with Secret Chamber being the worst if solely because of its money-gaining power in draw engines.  Duchess is definitely a harder card to play effectively (I have yet to play it effectively to be honest)  Otherwise, I agree with your list mostly but I'd put Native Village as the Honorable Mention, since in my experience that card's proven to be a trap unless you have highly specific uses for it.  Admittedly I might be overrating Cellar cause I love Tunnels to death.  I would probably rank it above Embargo, Fool's Gold and maybe Pawn on the right board.

Really though, most of the "bad" $2 cards are just the situational ones.  Hard to deny that Moat is awesome when you're playing a 4-player Mountebank game or something.

For a while I was using the original box with my method, but I moved up to a different one that is more portable recently.

I bought this case at a yard sale.  Sadly for that reason I can't recommend where to get one similar:

It's pretty lightweight and works fine all the way up to Hinterlands so far, including the mats and basic setup cards.

Also, I bought about 200 jewelry bags from wal mart to store the cards (Didn't sleeve them all individually, we just open the bags when we buy Kingdom Cards).  If you don't care about sleeving, this is a great cheap solution:

I should clarify that my wife and I randomize by picking the cards out of the box at random rather than using an app or the deck, so organization is not an issue.  So this wouldn't work for everyone.

Dear nxo004, I am sorry.  I only intended to use the Governors to gain gold, then Watchtower hands full of Gold.  I swear this was just spur of the moment.  I'm not even a good player, I promise.

On that note though, I had never thought of Watchtowering a Province and Tournament before that happened...  nice combo when you can actually pull it off.

I always hit Random unless it's a 3p+ game with Pirate Ships

the 10 Mandarin stack might work in a Vineyard deck, since it would get you all those actions and you could also return Potions to the top of the deck.  Sounds pretty gimmicky, but it could be a neat spoiler strategy.

Quick! There's not much time left for needless speculation!

Bag of Witches - $4 - Action

+1 card
+1 action
When you gain this card, all other players gain a curse.

haha.  That's actually a pretty interesting card if the Kingdom has Salvagers/remakes/something

Dominion Articles / Re: Advanced Dominion: How to Get Played
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:16:39 pm »
One problem I have is pressure to get my first turn underway, rather than taking a few minutes to assess the board. One thing I might do, is let my opponent know I need a few minutes to read the board (sometimes cards come up that I am very unfamiliar with). After that my pace resumes to normal speed, but I need to resist pressure to just "get going".

Anyone who rushes you on the first turn is a jerk.  It's pretty standard to spend a while during the first 2 turns thinking ahead, even when you know all the cards.  I would say don't pressure yourself, as it'll give them time to think about the situation too.

Yeah, with the copper gain it seems almost like a weaker, non-terminal Mountebank.  I could see $5 being a better price point.  Looks like a very powerful card nonetheless.

I wonder if it might be better to change it so that you only draw an extra card if they choose to gain copper?  That might nerf it down to the $2/$3 level though.

My favorite card to play is Venture.  I love actually getting a Venture chain going, as it's really satisfying.  Rewards my trashing OCD quite nicely.  Jester is another fun one to play for aforementioned reasons.

The only card I cannot stand is Pirate Ship, which turns every game in to the same thing (I primarily play with groups of 3 or more; it's a little less obnoxious in 2p games).  Tournament's a close second, but it's more because I suck with them than I hate the concept.  Getting hit by a Torturer chain is no fun but it's always hilarious watching your opponents struggle when you pull it off.

I honestly feel about the same. (which is why I post so little, although I read a lot of posts here--I feel like I have nothing to contribute even though I'm crazy about the game) That said, it's really not abnormal for "pro" players to be inhabiting forums like this, so I wouldn't take it to heart.  Even in games I'd consider extremely casual like Super Smash Bros, there are always people who take it a step beyond on the net, and might not realize they are coming off as elitists when they disregard the thoughts of newer players vocally.  Playing the game IRL has been, for me, a far more casual experience.

I'm not really sure what you're saying. Maybe that you don't want advice on how to play better?

If this wasn't a joke, it's exactly the kind of post the OP is talking about.  If someone said that to me in real life I'd kick him in the balls.  He said in the post he was interested in reading about strategy; what he doesn't like is the dismissive attitude of the 'experts.'   Dominion is not an exclusive club, bro.  :(

I think the Pauper's Feast would be more worth it if it also gave +1 Action (And would help differentiate it from Feast further).  May be a little overpowered with Golem/KC/TR, though that could be said of many cards.  As you have written it, I would personally buy that card about as often as Adventurer unless it gave some kind of bonus. (same for Embargo if it didn't give the $2)

The others look okay to me, but it's more out of the game currently being starved for more Reaction cards.

Oh, I intend to collect'em all (OCD collector kicking in...now, where are the promo cards?) but I have to prioritize my spendings, alas.

It's just the matter of what comes first. Great game, really.

I ordered the promos off of Boardgamegeek... they were 1 cent + $4.99 shipping each.  I searched around for better deals on ebay and such and couldn't find any, but maybe someone else has a better idea.

I think Seaside is the most fun expansion, but you should eventually get 'em all.  All the sets have fun cards that help shape the game into what it is today.

I've found Minion works better against people who haven't dealt with the chain in the past.  More experienced players seem to know exactly how to deal with it.  It can be a luck-based strategy at times, especially with poor trashing options.  Playing Minions when Saboteur is around is pretty risky, but it's one of the few environments where I'd consider it an altogether bad idea.

Can you add word filters?  e.g. change 'damn' to 'curse,' 'bitch' to 'sea hag' and so on?  Would be amusing.

Dominion General Discussion / Re: What's your dominion pet peeve?
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:52:30 pm »
I think the Moat issue would be better if it just confirmed that you blocked the attack after you revealed it the first time.

On a similar note, I hate it when people reveal Secret Chamber more than once (when there aren't other reactions like the classic SC, Moat, SC example).  It is the same 7 cards every time.  I had a guy reveal it 5 or 6 times in a row one time.  I think he finally returned the SC which stopped the chain of nonsense.

My biggest pet peeve is definitely Pirate Ship though.  I really just dislike the card, so I always try to beat it without using it, which is a losing proposition on some boards.  Unfortunately, I think I hate Ship mirror matches more than failing when I try to not use it.  I feel like I always end up on the wrong side of the luck when my opponent and I are both filling our deck with as many non-terminals as we can get + Ships.  They also like to hit my Silver on the first swing far too often.

Secret Chamber for me too.  I almost always play with it banned just because of the time sink.  I will auto reject any Secret Chamber + Torturer games with no second thought.  Had one that ran almost 2 hours once.

I think the value of Walled Village varies a lot depending on the size of your deck.  Getting a guaranteed +2a on a reshuffle is amazing in thin builds with important terminal actions (Goons for instance).  That said I agree with a lot of your assessment, but a lot of these cards feel like apples and oranges to me, Native Village in particular being a whole different beast.
