Three Magic The Gathering:Origins live drafts won in a row. Each draft featured a Jace which I took when rare picking after the draft.

Just to make sure, the simulations take into account that you only have one +1 Action token, and that can only be on one pile at a time, right?
yes

Lost Arts: So how good is not having to buy Villages to support your engine? Turns out pretty pretty awesome. I could give you some percentages, but the truth is, Lost Arts engines just crush any engine that relies on Villages.

Lost City: Since this thing only makes sense in engines I built a Wharf/Lost City bot and let it fight against Wharf/Bazaar.

Wharf/Lost City engine 47% - Wharf/Bazaar engine 50%

Simulation / Expedition
« on: April 06, 2015, 06:02:52 am »
So is Expedition better than Silver???

In Mountebank Big Money:
Silver/Silver opening 48% - Silver/Expedition opening 47%
Silver/Silver opening 44% - Expedition (with $3 available)/? opening 51%

In Familiar BM:
Potion/Silver opening 48% - Potion/Expedition opening 48%

In Goons BM:
Goons BM 40% - Goons BM (buying Expedition turn 3) 58%  -->> that's huge!!

Endgame tactics:
Big Money (using Expedition in endgame) 49% - Big Money (no Expedition) 42%
Buying Expedition over Silver when there are 6 Provinces left is optimal.

Amulet: This is going to be a standard open on a lot of boards. Amulet BM is on par with Smithy BM, but this is obviously also good in engines.

Could you test Haunted Woods BM vs Vault BM?
Haunted Woods BM 43% - Vault BM 50%

Giant: this card is pretty strong, but definitely not up there with the other cursers. Giant BM loses to Witch BM 27%-70%. It's exactly on par with Ghost Ship BM and loses to Wharf BM 42%-52%.

Hmmm, shiny new cards to code....

Magpie: Ironmonger big money is a thing and so is Magpie BM, only less so. Magpie 35% - Ironmonger 56%
Storyteller: Storyteller Big money is definitely not a thing (like Warehouse Big Money isn't). It's a sifter, but it won't sift what you most want to sift (green cards) so it's really not a very good sifter. Actually, I have no idea what deck this will be good in.
Haunted Woods: Surprisingly very strong. Almost on par with Wharf in a big money deck (Wharf 52% - HW 42%). I also made an engine to compare with a Rabble engine and it vastly outperforms Rabble.
Swamp Hag: This is the real deal. I mean it's weaker than the other cursers, but it still pounces on any big money deck. Witch 62% - Swamp Hag 34%. Letting the sim buy good stuff (eg gold) when the Hag is out seems better than buying nothing.
Hireling: A free lab every turn is a good thing, but the opportunity cost isn't mild. Hireling Big Money isn't really great, like Laboratory Big Money isn't. I tried to add it to a Fishing Village/Wharf engine, but it didn't like it. I fiddled around a little more and it's probably be worth it in long drawn out games (like cursed or ruins-games).

The reserve cards are too hard to implement because they require good timing and deck knowledge both of which the sim can't handle.

My opponent opens 5/2 on a board with Fool's Gold and Butcher. I have no chance with my 4/3 open... until he buys Province turn 6

RedWing: turn 6
RedWing   plays 3 Copper, 2 Fool's Gold
RedWing   buys Province
RedWing   gains Province
Geronimoo   trashes Fool's Gold
Geronimoo   gains Gold
Geronimoo   trashes Fool's Gold
Geronimoo   gains Gold
Geronimoo   trashes Fool's Gold
Geronimoo   gains Gold
Geronimoo   trashes Fool's Gold
Geronimoo   gains Gold
RedWing   draws Estate, Butcher, Estate, Fool's Gold
RedWing   shuffles deck
RedWing   draws Fool's Gold

... I still lost this game after Duchy dancing :(

Rules Questions / Re: Overgrown estate + market square
« on: March 26, 2014, 11:16:28 am »
The general rule is, for any "when x happens, do y," y happens directly *after* x happens. I would apply this to all games that don't specify otherwise (Magic: The Gathering is a significant exception). For example: "When you pass Go, collect $200." When do you collect $200? Directly *after* passing Go.

Why is MTG an exception? "When a creature enters the battlefield, gain 1 life"... you gain the 1 life after the creature is actually on the battlefield.
Say you're on 3 life. You play the creature and it enters the battlefield. The life gain trigger goes on the stack. Your opponent might then play Lightning Bolt, killing you before you gain the 1 life.

soulnet 4 - 2 Geronimoo

Since it has been almost 2 pages since the original post, I wanted to point out for the interested audience, that I finished adding comments to our match.

I didn't play well. Maybe I shouldn't have been playing those 180 player poker SitnGOs at the same time...??

Masquerade BM crushes this strategy 70-30 according to simulations. If the Big Money deck only had Militia as terminal, the Beggar/Phil Stone would beat it by a small margin.

Stef beats Geronimoo 4-2

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385286292526.txt
I open Urchin/Urchin to his Junk Dealer/Courtyard. I get some more Urchins because they fail to connect while Stef builds a decent deck with Bakers and Golds. When I finally get my Mercenary I'm already way behind in the Province race. Not much else to say here.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385287325798.txt
Pretty interesting board with Mining Village, Smithy, Graverobber, Junk Dealer, Merchant Guild, King's Court. The engine looks very clunky to me and I'm sure Stef will play it better so I go for simple Smithy Big Money. I get a 4 Province lead, but then Stef gets his mega turn KCing Graverobbers for Provinces and buying a few Duchies.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385288687878.txt
Watchtower, Alchemist, Mining Village, Noble Brigand, Smithy, Mine, Outpost, Gardens
Another interesting board. Were it not for the Noble Brigand then Smithy BM was probably the optimal play, but the presence of the Brigand makes us go for Alchemist. We both get 1P hands early and both buy a Mine and an Outpost. I probably make the mistake of buying too many Silvers over Mining Village because Stef gets a Noble Brigand and starts stealing my money. I make a pretty big mistake late game when I played 5 Alchemist and Mine a Silver into a Gold instead of a Potion to put back all those Alchemists. This probably cost me the game.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385289330686.txt
Apothecary, Oracle, Cutpurse, Wandering Minstrel, Bazaar, Cultist, Jester, Rabble, Treasury,Fairgrounds
A Cultist board with a twist in the form of Fairgrounds. I open Cultist to his Cutpurse/Silver. I get most of the Ruins and Stef manages to build his engine further. It looks like he's way ahead so I just concede.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385290319944.txt
Poor House, Develop, Fishing Village, Storeroom, Salvager, Scout, Silk Road, Hunting Party, Inn, Bank
I keep it simple with HP/Salvager, while Stef goes for the more flashy HP/Poor House moneyless engine. It seems to be working out for him, but then he misclicks or something and he ends the game on a win for me.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20131124/log.50b20dc3e4b0c9ce0cf27eb3.1385291327535.txt
Crossroads, Forager, Oasis, Remodel, Taxman, Treasure Map, Festival, Library, Tribute, Altar
A Festival/Library game. I open Taxman/Forager to his double Forager. I like my open a little better as it gets me faster to the $5 range where all the important cards are. I'm always slightly ahead. I probably misplay the end game as I count on him not being able to double Province.

Geronimoo beats jsh 3-1
http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130930/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1380566278584.txt
So this board has nothing going for it except maybe Peddlers. I decide to open Warehouse/Spice Merchant. After buying the Warehouse I see 3 Coppers in my hand. D'oh, should have been a Spice Merchant. When I make another mistake of not buying a Peddler when I have $2 I concede in disgust. Must slow down.

A Colony game with Mountebank. There's also Mystic and University to spam those which jsh goes for. I don't like that plan much because the University is going to be a dead card once the Mystics have run out and Mountebank's junk is going to hinder Mystic chaining. I basically stick to Mountebank Big Money and seem to win this easily.

Moat, Doctor, Cutpurse, Scout, Taxman, Treasure Map, Young Witch, Cartographer, Merchant Guild, Fairgrounds, Harem
A fun board with focus on Young Witch and its bane the Doctor. I open YW/Doctor to my opponent's Doctor/Silver. I get a second Witch and a second Doctor (when jsh gets a Witch as well). Mid game I get to combo Cartographer with Doctor which is pretty sweet. I go mostly for Big Money, but get singletons of most of the board to get Fairgrounds up to 6VP. Meanwhile my opponent is messing around with Treasure Map for some reason and never gets his deck in shape. I win by a landslide.

Forager, Wishing Well, Bridge, Gardens, Nomad Camp, Procession, Cache, Mint, Rabble, Stash
Again we're using different strategies. I go for Big Money with Caches (looking ahead to the end game where Gardens will be important). Jsh on the other hand tries something with Wishing Wells and Bridges. He starts to go for the Gardens very early (even before he's reached Province money). He wins the Gardens split 6-2 but as expected his deck chokes and my Mint powered deck buys 7 Provinces easy.

Glad to finish this tournament with a win.
