There were 3 players. At least 4 players are necessary to have a meaningful tournament.

I just found out the city of Antwerp is holding a car free day. So this means you'll probably need to use some form of public transport to get to the tournament site. (only the very center of Antwerp is car free)

105
Great data! How about Masq vs non-passing Masq? Is that too hard to find out? Sorry, I have no experience with any simulator.
Masq 52% - non-passing Masq 41%

106
The passing has a positive effect on the win rate. In my simulator Masquerade wins 53% -43% vs Smithy BM. If I remove the passing a card from the Masquerade code it wins 49% - 46%.

vs BM/Margrave. You're assuming to get hit by a Margrave every turn, but in reality there are a lot of turns where you're not and in those cases Silver is often better than a coin token.

In general, but in this deck the positive effect is cancelled out almost entirely because Margrave can draw CM dead.

Simulations show that 1 CM will smooth out a BM's draws. You don't want more than one though.

After a full day of IRL Dominion at the Dutch championship I still have the energy to play some virtual cardboard in the form of Gokodom. My opponent is jaybeez.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130908/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1378670941946.txt
Apothecary, Woodcutter, Workshop, Philosopher's Stone, Coppersmith, Ironworks, Moneylender, Navigator, Stash, Adventurer
jaybeez builds a very clever Apothecary chain opening Potion/Woodcutter. It seems like it's going to destroy my Moneylender big money deck, but his deck starts to stall hard in the end game and Adventurer wins me this pretty awkward first game.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130908/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1378669853345.txt
Horse Traders, Scavenger, Thief, Apprentice, City, Explorer, Mine, Rabble, Rogue, Expand
The engine doesn't look that amazing, but Rabble big money isn't that great either. The difference in our engines is the Mine I get while he gets Rogues.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130908/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1378670348161.txt
Develop, Village, Feast, Mining Village, Bazaar, Embassy, Festival, Mountebank, Wharf, Bank
Strong cards here. I open Silver/Silver to my opponent's Develop/Feast. I go for 2 Mountebanks first, Wharves later and sprinkle in some Villages. I seem to be winning easily as I pump 6 Curses into his deck, but on the last reshuffle my terminal actions decide to clump together and those dead turns are enough for jaybeez to squeak out a win.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130908/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1378670941946.txt
Crossroads, Masterpiece, Smugglers, Navigator, Bandit Camp, Catacombs, Torturer, Adventurer, Farmland, Peddler
A pretty straightforward Village/Torturer game with Bandit Camp and Crossroads for Village. We both open Smugglers/Silver. Now it's his turn to get terminals without Villages. I get ahead on points and I can gain Curses from Torturers for a 3-pile ending.

I win 3-1. Thx for playing, jaybeez.

Tournaments and Events / Dutch/Belgian Championship tournament report
« on: September 08, 2013, 03:29:41 pm »
At the break of day I get into my car and head for The Hague, Holland. This sea town is the place where the small board game convention of spellenaanzee is to be held. More importantly the Dutch/Belgian Dominion national championship is scheduled to happen there. I arrive with time to spare and check out the games for sale waiting for the tournament to start. A while later I see a few known faces trickling in the hall: Dave (Davio), Stef (Stef), Steven (Indur), Loes (loesu) and some more. I also get to meet Filip (SheCantSayNo). Stef is the favorite to win the whole thing of course, but I hope to get lucky. The tournament structure differs from last year's as we're going to play heads up matches with a swiss structure. This is much better suited for competitive Dominion than three-player randomness. The kingdoms have all been custom designed ahead of time so the games should all be interesting.

First round is against Martijn (don't know his Goko nick) and the kingdom features Laboratory, Festival, Swindler, Militia, Chapel and Duke as notable cards. I decide to open Swindler/Chapel although Militia/Chapel is probably a little better. My opponent surprisingly skips trashing and goes for Swindler/Silver. I get a lucky Chapel turn (3 Estates) and quickly get my deck into shape while my opponent is going for some big money strategy. Eventually I empty the Labs and then start greening with a triple Duchy turn. My opponent is going for Provinces so I get 7 Duchies which makes the Dukes huge and I win by a large margin.

Second round has the Native Village/Bridge combo and my opponent is a little noobish and doesn't seem to know it. I empty the NV pile and get 7 Bridges. My opponent is going for some sort of turbo Remodel strategy and gets 4 of the Provinces when my mega turn is ready to trigger so pretty easy win again.

Third round is against Loes (loesu), whose friendly, pretty exterior hides the Dominion beast that lurks within. This is one of the most fun sets and features Ironworks, Wharf, Gardens, Great Hall, Island. If both players go for the same dominant strategy of Ironworks/Gardens/Island rush the game can be over in 10 turns. I decide to open Bureaucrat/Smugglers. The theory is that the Bureaucrat's extra economy will allow me to get crucial Duchies after the rush. Loes goes for Ironworks/Silver. I get to smuggle an early Wharf and then basically start draining Ironworks, then Gardens, then Islands while Loes follows suit. We split the Gardens, but I get mine up to 4 points while Loes can't get to the 40 card treshold so I win.

3-0 and feeling pretty good, but now I have to play ...Stef.

I'm not really worried. Stef's a very mellow friendly fellow despite superhuman Dominion skillz. The board isn't very engine friendly and that's a relief because I know I won't be destroyed. We both open Courtyard/Silver. I get a few Ghost Ships and basically money (Torturer was also an option, but Ghost Ship is just better). Stef goes for money and Ghost Ships as well. After my first Gold I switch to Harems and win the split 5/3. We split the Provinces evenly, but Stef wins the Duchy split so he wins. It was my own fault because I bought a 3rd Ghost Ship over Duchy when there were 4 Provinces left. Stef correctly starts Duchy dancing earlier and wins deservedly.

5th round I get to play Steven (Indur). He's also a very strong player, but not yet at superhuman level. This board is pretty cool with Fishing Village, Nobles, Bazaar, Swindler, Lighthouse and Witch. I open Swindler/Lighthouse. I believe Lighthouse is key here, but Indur doesn't seem to realize it and only gets 1 (I think?) so I get to curse and Swindle him a few times while I'm often protected and only receive 2 Curses (to his 4). I never buy money and head straight for Nobles. I win that split and in the end also the Province split.

One more win and I'm in the finals....

Last round has Masquerade, Militia, Tactician, Festival, Sea Hag, Ambassador. We both open Militia/Masquerade (which Stef strongly disagreed with saying he always opens Silver with Masquerade). We basically play a mirror match of Masquerade Big Money. He gets a few early Golds while I settle for Silvers, but he makes a small mistake of building further when he hits $8 instead of going green. This allows me to split the Provinces and it's a tie. In the meantime Stef is playing some double Tactician/Festival deck which seems a lot cooler than what we went for. He wins handily and that means I'll play the finals best of three against Stef.

Our match gets a few spectators, but I'm not really nervous, just glad to be able to play Dominion against the best player in the world. The first board has Journeyman, Herald, Bazaar, Stonemason, Steward, Butcher and Baker. We both open Butcher/Steward (Baker coin token). I can't explain how, but Stef builds up a lot faster and while I'm still having single Bazaar buying turns he's already had a turn buying Stonemason (+2 Herald), Stonemason (+Bazaar,+Journeyman). It all seemed pretty hopeless and my only chance is Stef making a mistake, so ... I concede. I should have probably played on for that 1% where everything lines up for me and nothing for him, but oh well. On to the second game. The board is slightly less engine friendly: Soothsayer, Baker, Plaza, Council Room, Lookout. We both open Soothsayer/Lookout. Stef gets a second Lookout clearly indicating he wants to build an engine. I've never really seen a board where I want to get 2 Lookouts so I decide the engine is just not going to run that smoothly with Soothsayer junking up the decks (too many Golds is also junk for an engine). Stef gets a million plazas and manages to connect them pretty well with his few Council Rooms. He even manages a double Province turn and seems to win this one easily again, although he admitted afterwards that he wasn't too sure the engine was the right choice for this kingdom.

So SuperStef is the deserved Dutch champ. Well done and see you next year :)

Geronimoo 4 - Fabian 2

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377543967913.txt
We both open Trader/Market Square. Fabian declines to buy a Witch with his first +$5 hand (I guess because of Trader), but later buys 2 Witches anyway. We both battle for Nobles and Provinces after that and later Duchies. Luck is on my side and I win this mirror match.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377544244122.txt
A pretty boring Soothsayer BM game where we both open Militia/Silver. Fabian gets nice hands and wins this easily.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377544605594.txt#Game%20Over
A blitz game with Cultists where he opens Cutpurse/Silver to my JoaT/Silver. I'm able to get 5 Cultist when Fabian only has 2. He concedes turn 9 when I play 3 Cultist in a row.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377545646880.txt#Game%20Over
This game I got outplayed. I open Moneylender/Silver to his Market Square/Quarry on a Colony board which also features Soothsayer, Tactician/Vault and Laboratory. I'm mostly aiming for Soothsayer BM while Fabian quickly collects all but 2 Labs and transitions into Double Tact/Vault which easily beats my fair BM strategy. Well played!

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377546053791.txt#Game%20Over
A Jack centered game with Fishing Villages and Swindlers. He's able to Swindle 4 of my Coppers into Curses, but I get a few nice turns collecting Golds in the early game which is ample economy to win the Province split.

http://dom.retrobox.eu/?/20130826/log.505da8ce51c359e6597efefa.1377546511256.txt
Now it was my turn to outplay Fabian, although on a much simpler board featuring Minions. I open Counterfeit to his Silver/Silver then start collecting Minions. For some reason Fabian initially doesn't contest me for the Minions, instead opting for Gold and Ghost Ship. Winning the Minions split wins me the game and the match!

Second round and I already have to face a very strong opponent: DG. First game features IGG and Cultist. DG opens Cultist/- and I go for Nomad Camp/IGG and just start hammering the IGG's in the next turns while DG gets a second Cultist. His draws seem quite poor (at least 2 dead turns) and I seem to win easily despite him spiking a Province.

Second game features the interesting choice of Bishop/Hunting Party stack or Taxman/Hunting Party. Since it's a Colony game I figure Taxman should be nice, but I missed that it was also a Shelters game so those would hurt my HP stacking ability. DG goes for a simple Rogue/HP strategy and it pays off (maybe the singleton Counterfeit won him the game?)

Game three is where things get really interesting. A board full of power cards: Rebuild, Witch, King's Court, Jack and City. Since it's a Shelters game Rebuild is going to be slightly worse than Witch. We both open Jack/Silver, but DG goes straight for Rebuilds (despite having no Victory cards in his deck). He gets a KC somewhere and somehow connects it with the Rebuild for an awesome turn. He's not the only one to get lucky because I get to connect my KC with Witch. I squeak out the win thanks to Witch dealing out the last Curse + Estate for a 3 pile ending.

Game four is probably the most boring of all as we both go for double Witch. He gets a lot of $5 hands which is bad on this board because you need to buy Silver. I get a few $6s and the better economy gives me an easy win (there were also Goons, but they didn't affect the game that much).

Geronimoo and StrongRhino tied the match. First game I go for Mountebank and Familiar while my opponent skips the Familiar and goes for Mountebank and Urchin (into Mercenary). I obviously win the Curse war and my opponent overloads on Mercenaries to clean his deck. This means there are almost 2 empty piles (Urchin and Curse) so I decide to go for a fast three pile ending with Duchies. It works out.

Game two is a Lighthouse/Minion mirror match where I get very lucky winning the Minions split 7-3. This is pretty much game over and I coast to victory.

Game three features my favorite combo of Herbalist/Phil Stone. I get a Mountebank turn 3, but maybe that should have been a Herbalist. Anyway I win the Herbalist split, but my opponent gets 5 Phil Stones. I'm always in the lead VP-wise, but then I get a dead turn while my opponent gets a double Duchy and Province turn and he eaks out the win.

Game four we have a Rebuild mirror match (with Shelters). My opponent however opens Rebuild/Estate while I have to settle for double Silver. He gets pretty much perfect draws gaining two more Rebuilds in the early game and I'm dead.

Game five is another boring grind of Embassy BM mirror. I open Silver/Silver which should be slightly better than my opponent's Feast/Silver, but he has more luck and wins the game.

Game six I open Remake/Embargo to my opponent's Potion/Silver clearly indicating he wants Familiar. He gets to it before I can Embargo them. I transition into a sort of Ghost Ship Big Money deck with Ironmongers and Strongrhino overloads on Ghost Ships early game. My Ironmonger sort of counters his Ghost Ships (Harem second card on top which triggers the Ironmonger). In the end game I threaten a three pile ending with a small lead and my opponent can't catch up anymore so ends the game with the loss.

Dominion World Masters / Re: Dutch Championships 2013
« on: July 13, 2013, 04:11:26 pm »
tl;dr I qualified for the Dutch/Belgian Championship

Today I played in a qualifier tournament for the Dutch/Belgian championship. There were 8 players and the organisers decided to let us play 7 rounds heads up so everyone would play each other. The top 2 players would get a qualification ticket. Each round would have 5 random cards from base set and Intrigue so not the full Dominion experience but at least not the horror that is pure base Dominion.

First round I played against a n00b, but the board was pretty interesting featuring Conspirator, Mining Village and Throne Room. I looked for a Big Money enabler, but found none so I decided to flex my engine building muscles and go for big Conspirator chains building up to double Province. I opened Woodcutter/Workshop. I did eventually get the big chains, but 1 Woodcutter was apparently not enough so I had several turns where I spent $13 on single Province. Oh well, I'm no Stef, but my engine seemed good enough to beat my newbie opponent.

Second round I faced a slightly more seasoned player as he admitted to playing on Goko. We mirrored the opening with Baron/Silver then continued to try to win the Minions split. My opponent detoured for a single Torturer but that seemed pretty useless without Villages. I did take one Curse in the early game to ensure buying a Minion. We split the Minions evenly and I started focusing on golds while my adversary went for Markets and Wishing Well hoping to keep his Minion deck rolling. I liked my plan better, but we split the Provinces 4/4. This meant I lost by 1 point (the Curse!!!). Ugh.

Round three featured a Bridge mega turn with Village, Throne Room and Smithy to enable it. I pulled off the 8 Bridges turn pretty fast (my opponent didn't have Provinces yet). This game proved to me once again that Dominion is actually an online game that happens to also exist in the real world. You should have seen my play area in the final turn. A big mess of Villages, Throne Rooms, Smithies and Bridges.

Round four I played against a girl. Yes, unlike Magic, girls play Dominion. I wasn't happy though. She opened Witch/Cellar on a dry board (I mean no engine in sight) while I had to settle for Swindler/Silver. I did get 2 Witches in the second shuffle and she didn't get a second Witch so we split the Curses 5/5. It was a tense match with me hoping she'd make a mistake (like buying Villages) but she kept on buying Silvers and Golds. In the end We split the Provinces and Duchies evenly, but she ended the game and was first player so I was awarded the win. Phew!

Round five featured Minions again, but also Duke. I opened Masquerade/Silver and went on to win the Minions split 7-3. That was pretty much good game, but him going for Provinces and me going for Duchy/Duke made the win even more pronounced. In the end I had 80 points to my poor opponent's 42.

Round 6 I played against another Goko player who seemed to know what he was doing. I opened a nice 5/2 with Mine into Library BM. My opponent tried to counter the Mine opening by opening Thief. Pretty desperate move, but he did steal 2 Silver in the course of the game. Eventually he pretty much mirrored my game plan, but my good start gave me a comfortable win.

Round 7 another girl. This one was very newbish as she bought pretty much each card on the board while I settled for a single Library and money. Easiest win in the tournament.

I ended up winning the tournament, so Stef and all you other Duchies better watch out, because Geronimoo is coming to crush your dreams at the national championship!
