Tournaments and Events / Dutch/Belgian Championship tournament report
« on: September 08, 2013, 03:29:41 pm »
At the break of day I get into my car and head for The Hague, Holland. This sea town is the place where the small board game convention of spellenaanzee is to be held. More importantly the Dutch/Belgian Dominion national championship is scheduled to happen there. I arrive with time to spare and check out the games for sale waiting for the tournament to start. A while later I see a few known faces trickling in the hall: Dave (Davio), Stef (Stef), Steven (Indur), Loes (loesu) and some more. I also get to meet Filip (SheCantSayNo). Stef is the favorite to win the whole thing of course, but I hope to get lucky. The tournament structure differs from last year's as we're going to play heads up matches with a swiss structure. This is much better suited for competitive Dominion than three-player randomness. The kingdoms have all been custom designed ahead of time so the games should all be interesting.

First round is against Martijn (don't know his Goko nick) and the kingdom features Laboratory, Festival, Swindler, Militia, Chapel and Duke as notable cards. I decide to open Swindler/Chapel although Militia/Chapel is probably a little better. My opponent surprisingly skips trashing and goes for Swindler/Silver. I get a lucky Chapel turn (3 Estates) and quickly get my deck into shape while my opponent is going for some big money strategy. Eventually I empty the Labs and then start greening with a triple Duchy turn. My opponent is going for Provinces so I get 7 Duchies which makes the Dukes huge and I win by a large margin.

Second round has the Native Village/Bridge combo and my opponent is a little noobish and doesn't seem to know it. I empty the NV pile and get 7 Bridges. My opponent is going for some sort of turbo Remodel strategy and gets 4 of the Provinces when my mega turn is ready to trigger so pretty easy win again.

Third round is against Loes (loesu), whose friendly, pretty exterior hides the Dominion beast that lurks within. This is one of the most fun sets and features Ironworks, Wharf, Gardens, Great Hall, Island. If both players go for the same dominant strategy of Ironworks/Gardens/Island rush the game can be over in 10 turns. I decide to open Bureaucrat/Smugglers. The theory is that the Bureaucrat's extra economy will allow me to get crucial Duchies after the rush. Loes goes for Ironworks/Silver. I get to smuggle an early Wharf and then basically start draining Ironworks, then Gardens, then Islands while Loes follows suit. We split the Gardens, but I get mine up to 4 points while Loes can't get to the 40 card treshold so I win.

3-0 and feeling pretty good, but now I have to play ...Stef.

I'm not really worried. Stef's a very mellow friendly fellow despite superhuman Dominion skillz. The board isn't very engine friendly and that's a relief because I know I won't be destroyed. We both open Courtyard/Silver. I get a few Ghost Ships and basically money (Torturer was also an option, but Ghost Ship is just better). Stef goes for money and Ghost Ships as well. After my first Gold I switch to Harems and win the split 5/3. We split the Provinces evenly, but Stef wins the Duchy split so he wins. It was my own fault because I bought a 3rd Ghost Ship over Duchy when there were 4 Provinces left. Stef correctly starts Duchy dancing earlier and wins deservedly.

5th round I get to play Steven (Indur). He's also a very strong player, but not yet at superhuman level. This board is pretty cool with Fishing Village, Nobles, Bazaar, Swindler, Lighthouse and Witch. I open Swindler/Lighthouse. I believe Lighthouse is key here, but Indur doesn't seem to realize it and only gets 1 (I think?) so I get to curse and Swindle him a few times while I'm often protected and only receive 2 Curses (to his 4). I never buy money and head straight for Nobles. I win that split and in the end also the Province split.

One more win and I'm in the finals....

Last round has Masquerade, Militia, Tactician, Festival, Sea Hag, Ambassador. We both open Militia/Masquerade (which Stef strongly disagreed with saying he always opens Silver with Masquerade). We basically play a mirror match of Masquerade Big Money. He gets a few early Golds while I settle for Silvers, but he makes a small mistake of building further when he hits $8 instead of going green. This allows me to split the Provinces and it's a tie. In the meantime Stef is playing some double Tactician/Festival deck which seems a lot cooler than what we went for. He wins handily and that means I'll play the finals best of three against Stef.

Our match gets a few spectators, but I'm not really nervous, just glad to be able to play Dominion against the best player in the world. The first board has Journeyman, Herald, Bazaar, Stonemason, Steward, Butcher and Baker. We both open Butcher/Steward (Baker coin token). I can't explain how, but Stef builds up a lot faster and while I'm still having single Bazaar buying turns he's already had a turn buying Stonemason (+2 Herald), Stonemason (+Bazaar,+Journeyman). It all seemed pretty hopeless and my only chance is Stef making a mistake, so ... I concede. I should have probably played on for that 1% where everything lines up for me and nothing for him, but oh well. On to the second game. The board is slightly less engine friendly: Soothsayer, Baker, Plaza, Council Room, Lookout. We both open Soothsayer/Lookout. Stef gets a second Lookout clearly indicating he wants to build an engine. I've never really seen a board where I want to get 2 Lookouts so I decide the engine is just not going to run that smoothly with Soothsayer junking up the decks (too many Golds is also junk for an engine). Stef gets a million plazas and manages to connect them pretty well with his few Council Rooms. He even manages a double Province turn and seems to win this one easily again, although he admitted afterwards that he wasn't too sure the engine was the right choice for this kingdom.

So SuperStef is the deserved Dutch champ. Well done and see you next year :)

27
In this game I totally dominated with this very evil combo. First King's Court a Council Room for a million cards, then King's Court a Pillage to strip the opponent's hand of all the goodies.

Dominion General Discussion / Tips from the pros
« on: June 24, 2013, 11:52:47 am »
I'm thinking it would be fun to create a list of short pro tips for all the cards that people can quickly reference. Something like this:

Cellar
   DO: Village Smithy type engines
   DON'T: Militia
TRAP: Tunnel, Slogs (yes you have lots of crap to discard, but you'll draw mostly crap)

Chapel
   DON'T: slogs, Copper is good

Moat
DO: 3 or 4 player games with attacks
DON'T: 2 player games with attacks
TRAP: building an Village/Smithy engine with this (eg Festival/Moat)

Chancellor
   DO: Stash, Familiar

Village
DO: big terminal draw and a +buy
   DON'T: Big Money, Slogs
TRAP: big terminal draw without +buy

Woodcutter
DO: desperate for a +buy in an engine

Workshop
DO: slogs, rushes and engines with cheap components
   DON'T: Big Money

Would this be useful?

Simulation / Guilds simulator results
« on: June 14, 2013, 11:07:06 am »
Soothsayer: Soothsayer BM loses 39 - 57 to Witch BM so pretty close in power level
Masterpiece: Smithy + Masterpiece beats Smithy BM significantly (62 - 29). You want to buy Masterpiece at 5 or 7. Gold is still a little better at 6.
Candlestick Maker: A strange result. Adding 1 CM to plain Big Money (over Silver) wins 54 - 38 over Big Money. Adding a second (over Silver) decreases the win rate. So a little money smoothing is very strong, but you don't want to overdo it.
Advisor: this card is going to be a huge trap on some boards. Advisor BM loses 37 - 54 to plain BM. So in a deck with plenty of crap (Estates, Coppers, Curses) the card is probably worse than Silver. It will shine in dense Action decks however.
Herald: Another trap card. Besides the Village Idiot I expect a lot of Herald Idiots to emerge. If you think it can replace a Village in engine decks you're going to be very disappointed. You really need a very dense and trashed down Action deck for this to work.

« on: May 02, 2013, 11:09:47 am »
I've been playing a lot of poker lately and more specifically heads up (Omaha, 5-card Draw, 8-game and HORSE). I was a winning low stakes player at full ring tournaments (ROI 10%), but I seem to be a losing heads up player. Would anyone here be willing to play against me and identify some of my leaks? I play on Pokerstars. PM me if you're interested. In return I could help you identify Dominion leaks ;)

32
I'm going to organize an IRL Competitive Dominion tournament in Antwerp (Belgium) in the near future. Entry fee will be €5 and money prizes will be distributed to the top players. Tournament structure will be similar to a Magic tournament (1 on 1 and Swiss pairing). Please respond to the poll if you would strongly consider going.

33
I was messing around with the simulator and found opening Chapel/Chapel gives the Throne Room/Poor House combo the highest win rate. It's a three card combo, so it won't come up often, but it's a fun little fact.

Simulation / Engine building walkthrough
« on: March 04, 2013, 09:10:56 am »
Geronimoo, how do you iterate through the simulator options to determine the best way to build an engine on a board?

I'm sure philosphyguy isn't the only one who has trouble building engines in my simulator. So I decided to write this interactive walkthrough where I'll try to give you all some insight into advanced bot building.

A while ago I played a game on Goko against nomnomnom. The board featured Caravan, City, Cutpurse, Navigator, Woodcutter, Worker's Village and Lighthouse as notable cards. I thought there was potential for a City engine because of Caravans running out and no decent Big Money option available. I went for it opening Cutpurse/Silver. My opponent opened Navigator/Silver. Then we both started spamming Caravans. I got one Gold somewhere and started on the Cities once the Caravans ran out. Then I hit $8 and I realized I didn't have a +buy yet and my opponent was already greening, so I gave up on the engine and started greening. I lost and discussed a little with nomnomnom about the engine potential. He thought it was too slow, I thought it might be possible to make it succesful. I'll be using this game's board to give you a step by step walkthrough of how I went about building an engine bot in the simulator.

Before I start to write a bot script I try think about how I would roughly play the engine, then create an extremely simple bot and let it play against a benchmark (in this case my opponent's strategy: Navigator Big Money with Caravan support). The BM deck is easy to create so I won't discuss it (you can download all the bots in the attachment and load them into the simulator via File->Load then view them by clicking on "Created by User" in the bot selector window). The best way to learn how to use the simulator well is to play with it so please don't be lazy and try the exercises. Good luck and have fun!

First exercice: Try to work out in your head (or on paper) how you, human, would play the City engine. How would you open? What's your plan for the mid game collecting engine components. How about the end game? I'll give you some time. If you already have some experience with the simulator, you can try to write a simple script.

...

...

...

Solution:This is how I tackled the first exercise: take a standard Big Money bot and add Cities, a single Cutpurse, Caravans, Silvers and Lighthouses in that order. this deck wants to start greening only when the City pile is empty, so add that condition to the Province buy rule. Notice that I didn't add a source of +buy yet although I know the optimal strategy will very likely include it. I prefer to see a very basic strategy at work to easily spot and solve the major problems, then add more components. This is the "first trial" bot which you'll find in the "Created by user" tab. To test this bot, simply use the "Quick Simulation button". This first bot has major problems with a 0% win rate against the Navigator + Caravan bot. The issue is easy to find in the sample game logs.

Second exercise: try to fix the "first trial" bot so it has a win rate > 0%. This requires only one click in the editor! (hint: add a condition to the Gold buy rule)

...

...

...

Solution:To solve the second exercise you'll have to scan the "Sample Game" logs to find the problem. You'll find the Gold buy rule causes the bots to have massive piles of Gold and not much else at end of game. Simple solution: add a condition to the Gold rule to buy only 1. This seems reasonable because Cities would add money in the end game ("second trial"). This bot has a win rate of 5%. Yeah, but we still have a long way to go.

Third exercise: by looking at the game logs try to find the cause of the low win rate. This fix requires only one click in the editor! (hint: look at the Caravan and City buy rules order)

...

...

...

Solution:The bot is buying Provinces before the Cities are at level 2 (+$1 and +1 buy). How's that possible? Oh right, the Caravans aren't empty yet. To solve this issue simply move up the Caravan buy line above the City buy line in the editor. This is the "third trial" bot. The win rate doubles to 14%! Success! Looking at the sample game logs again I scroll down to turn 10 and see these lines:

Cutpurse + Caravan + City (third trial)(Plr 1) has $12 to spend and 1 buy
   Cutpurse + Caravan + City (third trial)(Plr 1) buys a Caravan

Further down it's spending $15 and more on single Cities. This bot desperately needs a source of +buy before the Cities are fully leveled up. Now comes the hard part: where to put this +buy...

Fourth exercise: add a source of +buy to the bot. You finish the exercise if the win rate has increased.(hint: add a Woodcutter buy rule)

...

...

...

Solution:Again I want to keep things very simple so I just let my bot open Cutpurse/Woodcutter instead of Cutpurse/Silver. This is the "fourth trial" bot. The win rate has tripled now: 41%. That's massive and by now it should be clear that the engine is viable and it's just a matter of tuning to make it win. Looking over the sample logs you'll see that the bot still has a lot of wasted economy in the mid game.

Fifth exercise: try to fix some of the wasted economy (hint: does the bot need Gold? Maybe add some more +buy)

...

...

...

Solution:Now we're really into the fine tuning stages. Lots of wasted economy = too much treasure? Maybe I don't need the Gold? And I'll let the bot buy a Worker's Village once the Caravans are gone. This bot ("fifth trial") wins more than it loses, so my mission is done and I have proven the engine is better than the Big Money deck. The bot still has a lot of room for improvement though.

Sixth exercise: Can you think of something else we could do to improve the bot besides adding +buy? (hint: the bot has lots of spare actions thanks to City, so you can freely add terminal actions to the deck in the mid game)

...

...

...

Solution:Back to the samples. I notice that the bot has lots of spare actions in the mid game thanks to Cities so I could probably let it buy extra Cutpurses for more attack and extra Woodcutters for more buys ("sixth trial" bot).

Now the bot has the correct opening (Cutpurse/Woodcutter) and the mid game is handled well (empty the Caravans asap, then empty  Cities while adding more terminal actions). It's time to focus on the end game. Looking over several logs, it seems the bot will often buy the Penultimate Province and lose.

Seventh exercise: Try to handle the end game better (hint: let the bot buy the Penultimate Province only if it can also buy the last Province)

...

...

...

Solution:"Seventh trial" The trick here is to let the bot buy the Penultimate Province only if it has >$16 to spend. I also simplified the Duchy and Estate buying rules so once the bot starts greening it doesn't buy non-green cards anymore. This increases the win rate to two thirds.

Eighth exercise: Can you do better than Geronimoo and improve the bot even further? Post your solutions here! Thanks for listening!

Simulation / [COMPLETE] Simulation Challenge - Huge Hands
« on: January 30, 2013, 04:43:02 pm »
I recently played this game where I went for a simple TM/Chapel into greening while my opponent decided for something more adventurous with Universities, Council Rooms and Treasure Maps and it paid off very nicely. I immediately thought this would be a fun and not too complicated engine to simulate.

Your goal: build a bot that plays the engine. Highest win rate vs the built in Big Money Ultimate wins the challenge.

The simulator will make tactical errors, but don't worry about them.

PM me the bot by February 6th.

Dominion Articles / Highway+Market combo
« on: January 26, 2013, 10:41:37 am »
I just played a game featuring the Highway/Market Combo which my opponent correctly went for while I got sucked into Big Money Moneylender because I didn't realize how strong the combo was. I fired up my simulator and found that this combo (+Moneylender) will beat Big Money Moneylender 9 times out of 10 . If you're uncontested the combo should be played like this:

-buy as few Silvers as possible (max 2)
-don't buy Gold
-buy a Market for every 2 Highways you have in your deck (approximation, but probably close to correct)
-go for one or 2 mega turns
-don't try this combo without at least a light trasher (even Trade Route will do)

And here's a bot to play around with in the simulator:

Simulation / Dark Ages first results
« on: December 10, 2012, 12:22:43 pm »
I programmed a few Dark Ages cards into my simulator (not published so you'll have to trust me):

Cultist: The Cultist BM deck beats the Big Money Ultimate benchmark 82-13 which isn't as strong as Witch BM (94-4). The simulator suggests to buy at least 3 Cultists over Gold.

Marauder: Marauder BM beats the BM benchmark 60-32 which is a far cry from Sea Hag which destroys the standard BM 96-2. The simulator suggests to buy only 1 Marauder (not 2 like Sea Hag).

BGG Store Tournament / BGG tournament round 3
« on: September 03, 2012, 04:33:24 pm »
Rabid wins vs Geronimoo 3 to 1 (and 1 draw)

Game 1 Geronimoo resigns. Rabid opens Baron/Silver and gets Provinces turn 5, 7, 8 and 10. I opened Potion/Silver for Alchemists (there was Herbalist). I can't build a big Alchemist stack and just hope to get lucky draws as I race for VPs. He starts to stall a bit, but then he plays Tactician and gets more than half of the VP in play so I concede.

Game 2 Geronimoo 7 - Rabid 4. A Torturer game. We both open Potion/Smugglers for Universities and Hamlets. Our strats are pretty much the same except I got a Lookout turn 3. Rabid gets most of the Peddlers, but in the end game I make the brilliant move of Universiting a second Smugglers so I can smuggle a Duchy and buy a Duchy. He gets a lousy turn so I can three pile him with the lead.

Game 3 draw (27/27). We both open Embassy on a dead board (dead = no engine). Since I'm second player I decide I'll need to get lucky so I buy a Duchess. Does that make sense? ....Nope!  Anyway, the game is over in 9 turns and I can miraculously make it a draw.

Game 4 Rabid 47 - Geronimoo 46. The most interesting game of the lot. It's a Minion board. He opens Shanty Town/Silver and I open Remodel/Silver. I think my opening is better because of the presence of Native Village and Vineyard. We both get a Haggler before racing the Minions which we split. I feel a bit lost in the mid game where I don't know if I want to try to get to $8 for Provinces or just buy a Vineyard. I should have probably focused on the Vineyards because I got them to 7 VP in the end (which I didn't realize until the very end). Rabid doesn't give me the time to correct my error and three piles me before I can sprint ahead with my huge Vineyards. Sad about this one, but hey that's why I'm not level 50.

Game 5 Rabid 60 - Geronimoo 42. This game was all luck and I'm sure Rabid will admit it. We both open Masquerade/Silver on yet another dead board. He gets Gold and Platinum while I'm stuck in $5-land. I get a second Masquerade to try to get lucky, but they collide a few times and I can't really make up his early lead.

I feel like Rabid got a bit more help from lady luck, but I definitely misplayed the Vineyard game tactically despite having the best strategy.

Thx for playing Rabid and gl in the next rounds.

Dominion World Masters / No Belgian Championship this year

I contacted the tournament organizer of 999 games and she informed me there won't be a Belgian Dominion national championship this year. This is very unfortunate because we poor Belgians aren't allowed to play in the Dutch national championship anymore (last year a Belgian player and good friend of mine won it). Since I won't be able to play I plan to do some coverage of Stef for the blog (he's probably the best Dominion player in the world right now). Come and say hi if you see me there.

Mike goes for a Chapel-lab engine which is not that great of an engine (although it might not be so bad with Baron...??). I go for Baron/Silver hoping for a turn 3 Forge which is a much nicer Chapel. Meanwhile atariman opens Baron/Native Village and later gets Coppers and Counting Houses. I kind of dismiss the silly 3rd player and focus on outracing Mike. My luck is against me as the turn 3 Forge misses the reshuffle and I only get to play it once the entire game. In the end Mike and I get into a Duchy war as his deck can't handle the greening and mine never really got off the ground. This gives atariman plenty of time to get a a massive Counting House and steal the game away from under our nose.

Solo Challenges / Geronimoo's challenges - Yummie

I started up this game and my synapses immediately went "Yummie". This board looked like it was hand made, only Apothecary seemed out of place because it doesn't combo with Menagerie. But maybe I'm wrong here. I won the game, but probably played far from optimal. You solo masters would have killed me on this board.

Challenge- End the game on Provinces in the fewest number of turns (points = tiebreaker). You have to open $4/$3 on this board:

Apothecary, Border Village, City, Highway, Island, Menagerie, Nobles, Potion, University, Woodcutter, Workshop
